7/24/14 - Something to Clear Up...

By DC Cueva
@DC408dxtr

Alright, spur of the moment post here. And if you're a loyal visitor to this blog or someone who follows me in the social world, if you can take a moment to read this post, it'll be most appreciated.

Earlier today, I found through a fan twitter account of the season 2 cast of MTV's Are You The One?. But when it came to trying to follow the entire cast, while I thought that I followed the whole group, nine people decided to use their power in to block me, thereby risking the chance that I may not speak to them at all once this all begins.
   Having been given this gut-check, starting this weekend, I'm going to be taking on a strong sense of responsibility in dealing with how to handle the pre-season buildup to any season of an MTV show before the buzz for a season officially begins. Now, you might say that I am a super fan of these shows, and I very much am. But sometimes I can get carried away even though I do my best to not do that.

That's why I'm now going to change my policy a bit here. And for this season, as well as the upcoming next season of Real World Back to Chicago, I will not make mentions of the cast or give them a follow until the buzz for the season officially begins, either when the trailer debuts or when related material begins to be printed or seen online. That means I won't be doing a Follow Friday sweep on DC408Dxtr of cast members from a show until first word is revealed about them. It will also be the case for Challenge seasons too, where at only at after halfway through a Real World season do I start to begin buzz for that too.
   This will add to a policy I've had since the beginning that I won't officially welcome new members of an MTV show to the MTV family until the trailer is released. This way, I will become more responsible and more courteous in giving the newbies their time to have a bit of breathing space and some alone time before the buzz officially begins.

I have dealt with a situation similar to this before when I used to flood timelines with tweets & retweets during shows, sports and events on @DC408dxtr. That's not the case anymore since I launched DC NOW at @DC408dxnow as I moved my live tweeting to that hub while maintaining my primary audience at my primary account, which since I moved tweets over to DCNOW in March, DC408Dxtr has increased its audience of followers to nearly 700.
   Now by making another change in dealing with the preseason buzz for any show by keeping an eye out on how much I can do without making it into a big buzz before the buzz officially begins, I will now join with everyone else in waiting for the right time to finally give these people their close up. This won't change the ambitions I have in wanting to establish a rapport with castmates beforehand. Like those who work as a researcher for NBC Olympics in scouring the globe to find out about athletes who could win gold in Rio before the rest of America knows who they are, I would like to have a chance to get to know new castmates as well, provided that it's done responsibly. But for now, I'll let them have their space and look forward to talking to them then next month.

Now, to the people for whom I am talking directly with, and you know who you are if you're one of those nine people (and for the sake of trying to not get in a huge beef with them, I will not call out these people either one by one or as a group), I hope you will understand that I am a huge fan of Are You The One?. But please understand that I am also someone who's very friendly and someone who would never say anything behind anybody's back or offend anyone.
   I would be most appreciative that once you get the news that the season 1 trailer and/or any related material finally comes out that you would un-block me at @DC408dxtr and we can finally have the opportunity to chat, instead of having to endure an entire season of not hearing from you which would be the worst thing ever.
   To those who I followed from the cast and have not been blocked by your fellow castmates, I will now give you the opportunity to enjoy some time to yourselves, and will wait for the right time for you and I to interact for the first time. It's the great interaction I had with your season 1 predecessors that, along with everything they had to go through en route to their million dollar moment, that helped make the season the success that it was. And I do look forward to watching you all and enjoying your company both on the show and in the social world coming up in September.

Finally, as a way for me to send a message to everyone who doubted me and to those who've blocked me, this weekend instead of the usual varied background & profile pics that I have on my twitter account @DC408dxtr, everything will be black and white. And sometimes, it's only brief words and images that can make a statement, and this weekend will be no exception.
   The profile pic you will see will display my picture, but just black and white. And the header you'll see in the background will not just include my twitter handle, but also the words "I AM DC." If you're an NBA fan like me, you'll no doubt notice that this draws on the inspiration from the L.A. Clippers' slogan "We Are One" that became a rallying cry across the entire NBA community in the wake of the Donald Sterling controversy. And I'm sure that this is my way to answer everyone who's criticized me, those who've de friended me and those who feel that I'm not part of their world. This weekend will be my opportunity to tell everyone, "I AM DC."
   A favorite song of mine that's been in my iPod for the last two years is the one that brought Imagine Dragons to prominence for the first time called, appropriately, "It's Time." The chorus of Dan Reynolds & fellas goes, "It's time to begin, isn't it? I get a little bit bigger but then I'll admit, I'm just the same as I was, Now don't your understand, That I'm never changing who I am." At this moment, these are the lyrics and the words I can relate to as I go thru this challenging day.

Thanks for reading. And those who have stayed loyal to me, thanks for your continuing support, loyalty and friendship. I AM DC.

The Challenge: Free Agents - That Was The Season That Was

Editors Note: Sorry for the long delay in posting this final Free Agents article...I've been busy the past few weeks and have been sidetracked by other things - including the passing of my grandma and the World Cup, which has taken time away from properly editing this article & posting it a bit after the finale. So, please accept my apologies...and away we go.

By DC Cueva
@DC408dxtr

Well, for one last time and a bit later than expected, welcome to DCBLOG's coverage of The Challenge: Free Agents, and to our last post of this season.
   Back in the wee hours of March 10, this fan, blogger and virtual friend of Team MTV had the honor of being the messenger of getting the buzz for this very season underway. Or for someone who's a huge NBA fan who's been glued to his twitter & to all the free agency frenzy since it began on July 1st, this was me pulling off my Adrian Wojnarowski moment in giving everyone a major scoop. Of course, upon seeing cast pictures being posted to MTV's mobile site on my iPad, I put together a montage and posted it to my Instagram @DC408Dxtr, and as the first one to post it to IG and singlehandedly started the rocket upon the road to the 25th season of what many call the "fifth major sport." Now, as we are in the midst of the summer, the World Cup gripping America and three months after this all began, we are at the end of the most unpredictable and one of the best seasons ever of this franchise.
   As always, the final in every Challenge season generally produces great drama with endurance, stamina, patience and stirring all kinds of emotions, all determining who will come out on top. But what we saw at the beginning of this final, it may be a done deal with the favorites being up big over the other competitors. But you never know what could happen, and in the case of a season that has seen top contenders fall by the wayside and others rise to the occasion, anything can happen. And the final that we had lived up to everything we expected: this is the most demanding, grueling and gripping final challenge that we've seen here, fitting enough for a silver anniversary season.
   The length of our extended, two-part SocialPulse diary that we did the weekend after the finale, plus the demand of trying to those out early rather than later and of course the length of compiling every single cast tweet, caused me to table my write-up of the finale to this one last post, along with my winners of the finale, the post season awards and a final review of this season. Plus, a thank you note to Team MTV follows at the very end of all this post, along with a look at the summer ahead here.

Hi, hello, what's up and welcome to DCBLOG's coverage of The Challenge: Free Agents and to DC SocialPulse powered by DCNOW. A few months ago in the wee hours of March 10, this fan posted to his Instagram cast pictures which had just been posted on MTV's mobile site, and singlehandedly started the buzz & the road to the 25th season of what many call the "fifth major sport." Now, as we are in the midst of the summer, the World Cup gripping America and twelve weeks after this all began, we are at the conclusion of the most unpredictable and one of the best seasons ever of this franchise.
   Last week, we saw not one, but two eliminations that determined the last six players in the Free Agents final. To the winners & the remaining players came a change of scenery to the Andes Mountains in Chile, and when the final challenge started off in the rapids, one team struggled to stay afloat. And for where last week ended, that's where the finale picks up as we witness what many consider the toughest final mission ever takes precedent. Enormously tough conditions will all push Bananas, Devyn, Johnny, Laurel, Nany and Zach to their limits in an epic race to reach the summit of an active volcano and cash in on the $350,000 prize money.
   Along with the episode tweets, the day-long buildup and the aftermath, this 2nd part of a two-part DCSP special covering the week of the finale will also include how the cast, Team MTV and yours truly saw the USA's do or die last World Cup group match against Germany which kicked off Super Thursday, plus today's enthralling opening knockout match that had the eye of one particular Free Agent. And after we cover the finale, we'll introduce you to one of the biggest fans of the RW/Challenge franchise, and I'll offer a parting shot as this blog heads towards a special milestone.

- As we begin, please note there is explicit language in many of the tweets below, but I am keeping it uncensored in order to retain the heat of the moment. So if you are mature enough, please read with discretion. :-)
- If you haven't watched the episode yet, don't proceed with reading this post. But don't worry, DCBLOG will compile all of these tweets after every episode so you won't be in the dark of how your favorites saw this all unfold.

So, following the jump, join us one last time this season as we being you the pulse from South America and beyond with the Free Agents cast.

@DC408dxtr / @DC408dxnow

Welcome again to DCBLOG and to DC SocialPulse powered by DCNOW. Usually, we present the tweets of cast members before, during and after they watch episodes of MTV shows. But today, in this, the first part of a special 2-part DCBLOG doubleheader (and also for the sake of conserving as much space as possible in these posts), we're doing something rather different. We're presenting not the episodes as they saw it, but the week-long buildup to the finale of The Challenge: Free Agents. So instead of presenting the tweets as the cast saw the finale, which we'll present in part 2 coming up later tonight, we'll bring you all the buildup from Saturday before the finale, right up until Wednesday. This will include how the Free Agents cast, Team MTV and yours truly saw the USA's heart-stopping draw with Portugal last weekend during the FIFA World Cup.
- As we begin, please note there is explicit language in many of the tweets below, but I am keeping it uncensored in order to retain the heat of the moment. So if you are mature enough, please read with discretion. :-)

So, following the jump, join us for the five-day countdown to the finale in South America and beyond with the Free Agents cast.

The Challenge: Free Agents - Decision Day

By DC Cueva
@DC408dxtr

Okay, here we are. Back on March 10th, in the middle of the night on an early Monday morning when I couldn't go to sleep somehow, it was yours truly, this super fan and virtual friend of Team MTV, who ignited all the buzz by being the first to post on his Instagram pictures that had just been posted inadvertently on MTV's mobile site. Then exactly a month later on April 10th, we kicked off MTV's The Challenge: Free Agents with 28 people of varying backgrounds all being forced to play this game in teams, pairs, and ultimately, individuals. And I've been fortunate enough to complete the cycle of having interacted in the social media world with every single competitor on this cast.
   And now two months later, with the summer solstice having taking place this weekend and 22 competitors having flown home from Uruguay, we have kicked off the final challenge, which will culminate tonight. As always, the final in every Challenge historically produces great drama with endurance, stamina, patience and stirring all kinds of emotions, all determining who will come out on top. But what we saw at the beginning of this final, it may be a done deal with the favorites being up big over the other competitors. But as I say, you never know what could happen, and anything can happen. It could become anyone's game at any time.

Challenge Stories: The Under Armour Story

By DC Cueva
@DC408Dxtr

We are now only just 26 hours away from the climax of MTV's The Challenge: Free Agents, with Bananas, Laurel, Johnny, Nany, Zach & Devyn left in the running for the $350,000 in a finale that will culminate atop an active volcano in Chile. But as we count down to the two-hour finale tomorrow night (the reunion will follow) and with a preview of the final coming your way here tomorrow as well, just as we've done numerous times in our Real World/Challenge coverage here, we'd like to go beyond the usual twitter diaries that we do here and focus on the stories that we do on the cast and relating to this show. And this one doesn't have anything to do with any of the cast.

Over the past two decades of the renowned TV franchise & ecosystem known as The Real World, The Challenge and the erstwhile Road Rules, MTV and Bunim-Murray Productions have partnered with many well-known Fortune 500 companies to provide them with both sponsorship and product placement on their shows. But perhaps the most well-known relationship between corporate America and these reality pioneers that feel like a religion to many of us is the one that involves the so-called "fifth major pro sport" and a company that revolutionized the sports clothing & athletic wear industry.
   If there's one company that is singlehandedly responsible for the development, growth and popularity today of performance apparel among athletes and casual active people like you and I, then it is Under Armour. Almost every time I go to the Great Mall here where I live in Milpitas, CA, I often check out the Sports Authority store to check in on the latest clothing, gear and equipment. And upon entering through the entrance inside the mall, near the front of it in between the sports gear, fitness equipment and checkout stands lies the Under Armour section. There, I find shirts, hats, clothing and the like with the UA logo.
   Lately, I've been stocking up on some of the Under Armour gear and related athletic clothing to wear both when I'm out and about, and when I'm being active. In fact, the first pair of new shoes that I bought with my own money is from Under Armour, which I wore for the first time when I went to Las Vegas last summer. And every time I watch a Challenge episode, it always brings me to this brand, the same way that when I look at UA clothing, it brings me to that show.

The Under Armour story begins back in 1996, when a 23-year-old former special teams captain at the University of Maryland, Kevin Plank, began a startup business in the basement of his grandma's house in Washington, D.C.  Plank spent his ACC career with only apparel being present in his car's trunk, and by the time the year ended, he sold his first set of clothes for $17,000. The next year, he moved out of his grandma's house in the Georgetown district and headed up the beltway to Baltimore.
   During his time as a fullback in College Park, Plank became tired of the post-practice routine of changing out of his sweat-soaked cotton T-shorts he wore underneath his jersey, but discovered that during those two-a-days, the compression shorts he used were drier than his undershirt. That became the inspiration behind making a T-shirt using only moisture-wicking synthetic fabric, the same as those used to make those shorts.
   Upon graduation, Plank started the company which he would name Under Armour, and after browsing through nearby fabric stores and even NYC's garment district, he began to architect a prototype of his invention, called the HeatGear shirt, or #0037, which he would eventually give to his Terrapin teammates and friends, some of whom eventually went on to the NFL. Afterwards, he would perfect his craft in designing a shirt created from micro fibers that wicked moisture and kept players dry, cool and light, even during the brutal hot conditions of summer.
   When a USA Today pic of Raiders QB Jeff George wearing a Under Armour mock turtleneck during a game made it to newsstands, everyone began to notice this new technology. It also caught the eye of a Georgia Tech equipment manager, who made the first major sale by asking for 10 shirts from Plank. Arizona State, North Carolina State and other NCAA D-I programs would soon follow in signing deals with Under Armour.
   Buoyed by this positive response and word of mouth, orders and buzz began to increase so much that UA would soon launch new apparel lines ColdGear, AllSeasonGear, StreetGear and TurfGear. By year's end, the company sold 500 of its HeatGear shirts, generating $17,000 in sales, $34 a shirt. A year later, that revenue grew nearly six-fold to $100,000 and the company opened up a factory in Ohio to manufacture the clothing.

Under Armour's true rise to national prominence would come in 1999 when it was asked by Warner Bros. to outfit players for its two football films, Oliver Stone's Any Given Sunday starring Jamie Foxx & Al Pacino and The Replacements. When the former was released, Plank made a gamble by placing a print ad in ESPN Magazine that, which along with the movie, generated a $750,000 sales spike and brought new awareness to the company, enough for the NFL, NHL and the ill-fated XFL to create relationships with UA and even put Plank himself on the company payroll.
   In 2002, the company would settle into new digs at an old soap factory in the Tide Point district of Baltimore's historic Inner Harbor that became its world headquarters, and a year later saw its first TV ad campaign. With the help of those commercials, Under Armour became more well-known to everyone and its slogan, "Protect This House," became a catchphrase for athletes in bringing the company to new heights.
   New product lines for women, junior athletes, outdoorsmen and golfers would soon follow on its coattails, along with the company's first all-school deal with Scott Plank's alma mater, the University of Maryland in 2005. That fall, its stock went public and became the first domestic company since before the dot-com crash to have its IPO double in its first day on Wall Street. And it ended 2005 w/ nearly $300 million in revenue.
   A year later, Under Armour gambled again by entering the footwear business and introduced its Click-Clack football cleats which would ultimately garner nearly a quarter of the football shoe market in its first year in stores, soon followed by cleats for baseball, softball and lacrosse. And in 2008, it entered the athletic footwear business with its first line of performance training shoes, after nearly a dozen years of only doing clothing.

Also that year, in line with the expansion of episodes of both it and The Real World to one hour, Bunim-Murray Productions contracted Under Armour to provide the competitors' uniforms on The Real World/Road Rules Challenge: Gauntlet III in Mexico. That partnership has remained ever since through the show's evolution into eventually becoming arguably TV's most intense reality competition show. And when you go to Instagram and browse through pictures of Real World & Challenge alumni working out at the gym, them wearing Under Armour gear is a common sight.
   In 2010, the company opened its first branded retail outlet store in Annapolis, opened new European headquarters in Amsterdam's Olympic Stadium, and reached the $1 billion mark in annual revenue, capping off five years of quadrupling revenues. A year later they embarked on an international strategy that expanded into Asia, Europe & Latin America; retail stores opening in China & Scotland; and signing an apparel deal with Tottenham Hotspur of the EPL. And after harboring cotton since the beginning, UA launched a new kind of cotton apparel using new technology allowing sweat to dry more faster & being water-resistant, called "Charged Cotton."
   Over the years, Under Armour has forged partnerships with many of the biggest names, teams and properties in not just sports, but been entertainment as well in addition to The Challenge. Among the many professional athletes it has sponsorship deals with include:
- NFL players Miles Austin, Tom Brady, Anquan Boldin, Arian Foster, Vernon Davis, Devin Heater, Ray Lewis, Cam Newton & Patrick Willis;
- MLB players Buster Posey, Bryce Harper & Ryan Howard;
- the NBA's Stephen Curry, Kemba Walker & Brandon Jennings;
- golfers Hunter Mahan & Jordan Speith;
- tennis phenom Sloane Stephens;
- and fighters Georges St-Pierre & Canelo Alvarez.

For the past several years, Under Armour has served as the presenting sponsor of the NFL Draft Combine in Indianapolis, providing the apparel used by college players setting their sights on the big time. They've also made an entry into the Olympic world too, providing speedsuits to the U.S. speed skaters, bobsledders & skeleton athletes, the uniforms to USA gymnasts, and sponsoring gold medalists Lindsey Vonn, Shani Davis and, of course, Baltimore native Michael Phelps. It even is as a major sponsor of a show that I haven't even heard of but you probably do, A&E's Duck Dynasty.

And then, there's the college partnerships Under Armour has, starting with the alma mater of its founder. In the same manner that Nike has a hands-on relationship out west with founder Phil Knight's old college the University of Oregon, as written above the company has long provided Kevin Plank's alma mater with uniforms, apparel and footwear to every athletic team on campus in College Park.
   Earlier this year, Notre Dame and Under Armour signed the biggest apparel deal in NCAA history when they penned a 10-year pact to provide uniforms and athletic equipment to the revered program, which takes effect this upcoming season. In addition, UA has partnerships with Auburn, Boston College, University of Hawaii, Loyola, Navy, Northwestern, St. Johns, Seton Hall, South Carolina, Temple, Texas Tech and Utah.

Nearly two decades ago when I was in junior high, the sports gear and athletic apparel world was much different: everyone was using cotton shirts during P.E., we had no iPods with which to have workout music, and other things I can't remember. But after the emergence of Under Armour, things would never be the same when it came to athletic apparel. The company's mission statement reads, "To make all athletes better through passion, design and the relentless pursuit of innovation." They have done exactly that in inventing new technology and innovations in clothing that have revolutionized how athletes & casuals work out and compete.
   What started out as just an idea of making a new kind of T-shirt to absorb sweat more than cotton, the company has grown to becoming the pioneer, originator and innovator of performance apparel that has grabbed the industry's attention. And major competitors like Nike, Adidas & Reebok have followed in Under Armour's lead in offering similar versions of its moisture-wicking apparel, giving all athletes the benefit of being able to perform better whatever the weather, regardless of which brand they're wearing. As the company turns legal age - 18 this year, Under Armour remains at the forefront as a leader in performance apparel, and always with an eye on making the next big thing in sports apparel.

For more on Under Armour, check out its website at UnderArmour.com and follow them on Twitter at @UnderArmour.

Welcome back to DCBLOG's coverage of The Challenge: Free Agents and to DC SocialPulse powered by DCNOW. Last week in Uruguay, we saw what turned out to be the last mission before the final that became a mini-final in itself. Those who won that week then faced a tough vote and what happened in the Draw saw two great females, or frenamies, face off against one another in elimination.
   And for where last week's episode ended, that's where this week begins, with that battle between those veterans. To the winners & the remaining players go a trip to Chile, and instead of a last mission everyone is forced to earn their way into the final through one last elimination and draw. And when the final challenge starts off in the rough rapids, one team struggles to stay afloat.
   Along with this week's episode tweets, the usual buildup to Thursday, the Friday hangover and both Father's Day and the NBA Finals, we will also look at how the cast, Team MTV and yours truly saw the USA's dramatic World Cup win over Ghana on Monday. And after theWRAP, we'll roll out the welcome mat to a new MTV show that might become the next guilty pleasure.

So, following the jump, in addition to the episode tweets, join us for World Cup madness, birthday madness and much more.

Welcome again to DCBLOG's coverage of The Challenge: Free Agents and to DC SocialPulse powered by DCNOW. Last week in Uruguay, the famous friendship known as Team Black saw some erosion, along with balls taking precedent. Plus, a house romance finally sees its end when Cohutta lost in the draw, while a surprise injury Cara Maria suffered put her chances of winning in jeopardy.
   This week, it's week 10 as we are two weeks away from the final, and there's a pairs mission this week that involves water, running and puzzles. Those who take the victory this week will then face a tough decision during voting and what happens in the Draw will eventually pit two great females, or frenamies, against each other in elimination.
   After we cover this week's episode, we'll have our fans of the week and a couple little tidbits about the cast of a show that's not BMP related but wanted to share with you well after they won money before this season's competitors could even cash in.

So, following the jump, in addition to the episode tweets, find out which two fellas who got involved in twitter words earlier this season celebrated a birthday, which Free Agent got to go to two games of the NBA Finals and which memories came about for some with Brazil hosting this year's World Cup, being fittingly hosted in the homeland of one of this season's competitors.
