Six years ago this month, the world of MTV Reality was turned on its head: a future Challenge champ got to welcome six strangers to her adopted Bay Area backyard for a Real World season that anything but typical once their exes came by for Ex-Plosion. A week or so later, the 2014 year in Teen Mom began with just the TM2 cast taking center stage when Kailyn Lowry gave birth to the second of her three kids and tied the knot to Javi Marroquin. And then, the second show to land the coveted spot of airing after the baby mama drama debuted when Are You The One premiered, MTV's first foray into 2010's dating television.
It was after the season finales of those three shows aired in the spring of 2014 that, without those in the United States ever knowing about it, a show that took the twisted concept of the first of what would be five different MTV shows Cory Wharton would be on to new heights, Ex On The Beach debuted on MTV's British channel and its affiliated networks in non-American territories. It was the beachy version of what he had to go through in the City by the Bay: the ex girlfriends & boyfriends of the singles coming in to wreck their summer vacation, and it has been a staple of MTV UK for five years, expanding to many other countries in the years following.
It was only a few years later that those in the U.S. would discover what this show would be all about, just as MTV in America began to once again become relevant in a newly changed media landscape. And with its most notable couple just announcing the next phase in their relationship, as well as its most explosive character giving us one of the biggest MTV moments of 2019 that didn't even air on the cable channel itself, we at DCBLOG felt like giving Season 1 of Ex On The Beach U.S. a second look... but in a totally different and twisted way than you've ever seen, or heard.
Earlier past year, the world's most popular platform for offering binge-worthy goodies, Netflix, announced its latest high-profile steal. With the promise of a nine-figure paycheck, it successfully persuaded top TV producer Ryan Murphy from his longtime perch at 20th Century Fox to come over to a streaming platform that's helped change everyone's viewing habits. He's the behind-the-scenes impresario behind FX's American Horror Story whose latest season Apocalypse debuted this week, spinoff American Crime Story including its acclaimed portrayal of the O.J. Simpson trial, and FOX's first entry into owning the musical drama genre, Glee.
Murphy's first high-profile TV hit was the medical drama Nip/Tuck, which ran for six seasons and earned 45 award nominations. Over 100 episodes, it followed a leading plastic surgery center based first in Miami and then in Los Angeles, and offered a glimpse into the lives - both in & outside the operating room - of founders & doctors Sean McNamara and Christian Troy, played by Dylan Walsh and Julian McMahon. As FX began embracing HBO-style premium content, Nip/Tuck featured graphic, partial-depictions of plastic surgeries given to patients, and featured reality-style storytelling of arcs being told in multiple episodes - unique in this subgenre.
There is a member of the casts of both The Challenge Final Reckoning and this spring's U.S. version of Ex On The Beach who knows what it's like to go through having plastic surgery themselves: Angela Babicz. Just after she came home from filming her season of now-erstwhile Oxygen series Bad Girls Club -- Twisted Sisters (its last before the channel's shift to crime), she looked in the mirror and thought to herself that her nose didn't feel right. Angela felt insecure about it, and it was magnified much more when she saw herself and her side profile on television... and in HD.
In having constant nightmares about her nose and while her season was on TV, she decided to make a change. And after doing plenty of research, the surgery she chose was one that's known to most as a nose job, but to those who work in this field, it is known professionally as "Rhinoplasty." While traditional plastic surgeons and those who work on jaws and faces are capable to work on noses, those who specialize in working on them, ears and throats are known as otolaryngologists, and those who check out Wikipedia's article on this subject have an idea of what this grueling process is about.
Its description of "Rhinoplasty" reads: "...a plastic surgery procedure for correcting and reconstructing the form, restoring the functions, and aesthetically enhancing the nose by resolving nasal trauma, congenital defect, respiratory impediment, or a failed primary rhinoplasty. Most patients ask to remove a bump, narrow nostril width, change the angle between the nose and the mouth, as well as correct injuries, birth defects, or other problems that affect breathing, such as deviated nasal septum or a sinus condition."
A year after going through this life-altering journey, Angela shared on YouTube in spring 2017 an in-depth video on her experience of going through rhinoplasty... one that saw her spend the summer of 2016 and the ensuing months afterward going through a traumatizing process that made her stronger. As she cautions at the outset, a Heads-Up that the photos shown in Angela's video embedded below, as well as certain aspects of the surgical process, may be graphic to some readers.
For someone who not only covers MTV Reality for this very site, this blogger is someone who also watches a lot of sports television outside of my primary beat. And I also am a news junkie, though the interest is more tilted towards local news than national news or the cable channels, and who even samples what newscasts are like outside where I live. And if you live in the Bay Area like I do, you're used to some of the best local news coverage anywhere in this, the nation's 6th largest market.
Something I have a fascination with in TV land is voiceovers: those who watch NBC's Olympics coverage, Showtime, Nick at Nite and classic rock radio show Flashback are used to the familiar tones of Bill St. James. Those who've been watching local news coast to coast since the early 80's have likely heard their newscasts being opened by the "God-like" baritone of Charlie Van Dyke. In Miami, the voice of Scott Chapin is synonymous with WSVN 7 News embracing the "If it bleeds it leads" approach to crime-driven, sensationalistic local news. And when HBO's Hard Knocks returns next month, there's no soothing voice to sports TV viewers than that of Liev Schreiber's.
For those who got to watch an eventful and entertaining first season of the U.S. adaptation of Ex On The Beach this spring, they know that ten singles moved into the house to start with, and a total of fourteen exes invaded Hawaii by the time the last crush ceremony brought the curtain down a month ago. Those who watch the entire Trifecta of this, Are You The One? and The Challenge/Real World franchise know that several alumni of those shows were on this most memorable season, and along with other reality alumni and ordinary Millennials gave us a rookie season to remember. And judging by its success, we should have another go-around of this in the not-too-distant future.
Three of the originals and one of the exes -- Angela, Faith, Paulie and Derrick H. -- flew straight from Hawaii to South Africa to be part of the ongoing drama that is Final Reckoning -- with the ladies and the Big Brother alum already making noise in the first three episodes. One of those who took part on the first Champs vs. Stars last year, Romeo Miller, served as host as he juggled this gig with spots on Growing Up Hip Hop and Famous In Love -- including being on both MTV and on Freeform at the same time on Thursdays this spring. And yes, he, competed against AYTO & SafeWord host Terrence J. and four Challengers on Celebrity Fear Factor this week.
But ask anyone who watched Ex On The Beach and those casuals who stuck around after Jersey Shore, and they'll tell you that Season 1's unsung hero is someone who wasn't an actual cast member or the emcee. That title belongs to the man who provides sly and often hilarious commentary in transitioning between scenes in Hawaii. It's the same thing that takes place on the original British version of EOTB -- something you always don't see on other reality series, other than for Siesta Key where each cast member of the modern-day Laguna Beach got to take turns being the voice of reason... quite literally.

Hi there, and welcome back on this momentous Sunday night where the balance of power in the NBA has shifted, once again, towards Los Angeles as the King is headed to LA. And as the 2018-19 season in the Association has started several months early, the first half of the MTV Reality year is now to an end with the finales this past week of Jersey Shore Family Vacation and, of our focus here on this last Pulse diary of this half, the American version of Ex On The Beach.
Last week, a big fight spurred by a spit left everyone shook after Taylor and Alicia got into it... but no one in the house expected what was to come next when something that was the last thing on the singles' mind came to fruition when the eliminated exes decided to invade the villa one more time. A game of Dare/Double Dare was innocent fun for everyone until Angela and Derrick did something that they shouldn't be able to do. And it came at an inopportune time when she had to again deal with Tor'i returning to the house, and something that would go down afterwards...
At week's end, the house was given good and bad news: the good was that there would be no elimination to close things out... but the bad was a room that's served as hell for many couples may be used several times. And this week - and unlike what we usually have in the Trifecta, it all comes down to which couples will get sent down to the Shack of Secrets. For the man who got his heart broken the first time he was on reality TV, it's judgement day: rekindle love or return home wanting for a fresh start. And for the last night formal, the Crush Ceremony will serve as the question of whether these people will go home with love or with just a lei around their necks.

Thursday marks the end of the first half of the 2018 MTV Reality year: first comes the season finale of Jersey Shore Family Vacation as the originals party it up one more time in Miami, followed by the final act of a most eventful first season of the American adaptation of international MTV format Ex On The Beach. Both have brought record viewership to MTV as the channel's renaissance continues as the programming that made it famous is entertaining a new generation of fans, with the momentum set to continue in new seasons of The Challenge, Floribama Shore, Fear Factor, Catfish and Wild 'N Out, plus other new shows ready to be unleashed this summer as is the return of Real World to come in the launch of MTV Studios later this year.
The first time that MTV delved its feet into the sub-genre of romantic reality television since A Shot At Love with Tila Tequila came in the same islands of Hawaii that's hosting EOTB, when the first season of Are You The One? debuted four years ago. It has the series' only perfect match that has stayed together and have wedding rings and babies in Amber & Ethan Diamond, while the invasion of two pairs from that season to Battle of the Exes II the next year set the stage for the crossover into The Challenge of other reality series. And when we get closer to the fall, we'll be returning to our 50th state for Season 7 of AYTO, with Terrence J. again hosting following his gig hosting the BET Awards red carpet show over the weekend.
Scour the world of YouTube and other video websites, and you'll likely be inundated with plenty of videos that will make you want to laugh out loud. And those who watch an end of week tradition in Ridiculousness with Rob Dyrdek or longtime Sunday staple America's Funniest Home Videos know that there are ample opportunities to do just that… so are many other websites whose goal is to amuse you and remind everyone that there is a something more important than a social issue that can divide the country and dominate your timelines.
A site that prides itself on offering people a chance to let out some laughs is JukinVideo. It is unique in the viral video landscape, as its Facebook synopsis states, "JukinVideo only takes uploads from original owners. In an age when online videos are ripped, recycled, and uploaded to countless different websites on a daily basis, JukinVideo insists on uploads from original video owners ONLY." And in that day of videos being reposted in record numbers, Jukin makes sure to not clutter timelines with videos already posts on YouTube and rival sites but showcases original work on its site.
In 2015, the site reached the precious 1 million subscribe milestone on its way to today having 1.7 million subs on its YouTube channel, and its videos have garnered 825 million hits. And during that year, Shanley joined the JukinVideo team in teaming with host (and who at the time was JV's Audience Development Manager) Ricardo Marquez in hosting fan interactive show Jukin 301 on YouTube and Facebook Watch. There, the two got to become Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon and discuss & debate which video should receive the status of clip of the day.

Welcome back to this trip Inside MTV Reality, and as the weekend comes to a close - and before you head off to bed - it is almost time to do so on the first season of Ex On The Beach U.S., where lots have taken place but now is time to soak in every last minute because we are nearing its finale.
Last week, Taylor's THIRD ex came to Hawaii when the one local she dated - Joe from Are You The One Season 6 - became the latest ex to come on shore and rested a bit after that epic comeback of six months ago. And for fellow AYTO alum Cameron, he found himself in the buzz when body shaming came to the house and it didn't turn out well for him. But the drama centered around Cory: him showing his feelings for Alicia, which then got Taylor fuming - and led her to spit from upstairs towards Alicia.
That fight is still the talk of the island as we join the crew this week, where the house resorts to a game of Truth or Dare... but instead of telling the truth they resort to Dare or Double Dare for their house entertainment. That is until one of the singles and their ex do something that they're not supposed to do. And it comes at a most appropriate time, as the ones who they thought they had they had gotten rid of forever and once decide to pay one more visit to the islands with their sights set on revenge and/or a second chance.

As those of you out East get set to call it a night and those out West prep to watch Tiffany Haddish host the MTV Movie & TV Awards, welcome back to DCBLOG's look Inside MTV Reality. And after making you wait one extra day, we have a treat for you this Monday night: the Pulse of Week 9 of Ex On The Beach USA - and even more crazy drama in Hawaii.
Previously, this wild season rolled along when Jasmine was sent down to the Shack of Secrets not to face the music, but was given a temptation of bringing in newbie Charles upstairs, and in turn sent Louis home, all as we also saw new ex Marco enter the villa. But the drama centered around Alicia and Cory (and perhaps with even more on his plate to come thanks to what broke over the weekend), which also saw Angela and Shanley get into words too.
But all of that is minuscule compared to what goes down next: a new ex arrives to the house -- someone who again is familiar to us Trifecta fans -- and who also gets a dose of surprise news. Meanwhile, the unfortunate issue of body shaming that's been in the news a lot in the past year makes its way to Hawaii, which in turn triggers an explosive fight. And the relationship of that baby daddy and the one he's been seeing in this house gets sent to the breaking point when lingering feelings for his ex begin to emerge.

When we left the islands last week, we had the house turn back the clock a decade to when they were kids and took for a ride on a Slip N Slide. And we had Marcus arrive to the house as the latest ex, only for his obnoxious behavior cause the house to send him home directly. But before a big bombshell that would drop in this community and ensuing an ongoing social media soap opera we'll be covering here later, the focus was on Big Brother alum (and as of next month, Challenge rookie) Paulie and his ex Lexi. And when it was gonna be that they would emerge out of this house as a couple again, a phone and his messages spelled doom for them in the Shack.
In the wake of what went down there, this week sees yet another game-changing twist come on shore: a former Warriors cheerleader is offered a big temptation to bring a new man up and send someone else home, who'll join another ex with intentions on making up. The drama involving our baby daddy and the girl he broke up just before he arrived here continues, which in turn brings everyone else into the drama. And the Bad Girl who's been in lots of drama finds herself in more of that, this time with one whose most notable moment was what happened when she lost her crush the first time we saw her on MTV.

As we bring the curtain down on what's been an eventful weekend in many retrospects on the MTV Reality front -- Challenge Mania, honoring Diem, a obstacle course, a marriage and a baby to name a few, we have this late night dessert to share with you in our look at Episode 7 of Ex On The Beach.
Last week in Hawaii saw history repeat itself in one of the exes who got voted off the island make her grand reentry when, after the singles thought that they would get someone totally new to the beach, Alicia made her return as a single much to Cory's dismay, as well as the return of Are You The One? original Shanley from Season 1. Meanwhile, the Shack of Secrets sent Victoria and her ex Luis down where revelations of cheating while they were dating each other emerged, while the week's elimination saw Haley get the heave-ho.
It's fitting that this week, the housemates finally have reason to finally let loose when they get to do what those of you got to do the first day school went out for the summer when you were young: go on a Slip N Slide and become kids for a moment... and then become adults again in a lingerie party. And one couple seems to have finally gotten to do what very few in the show's UK version have been able to do: kiss and make up... only for that to come apart as only this show does. And when happens when an ex comes to crash the party? Bad things can happen.

As you enjoy Sunday of this Memorial Day Weekend and the start of summer in America, we now bring you into what has already been a dramatic season of Ex On The Beach USA. And with half of the season already in the books and more still to come, this season is about to get even more crazier in Hawaii.
Though they've been making headlines through 5 episodes, as far as power in the house is concerned the Exes have been on the outside looking in, and last week they were offered a golden opportunity to flip the script. A message from a bottle announced a surprise twist that they were given the power to send home of the OG's in the house. And for someone who has been THE star guy of this season, Derrick used his muscle to send home the one who had been seeing his ex Angela in the house, Tor'i.
With the original group of singles now being reduced by one to nine (and with the exes being joined by Are You The One? alum Cameron and Victoria's ex Luis), this week sees the biggest bombshell to drop yet in our 50th state. If we believe in the old saying "history can repeat itself," it does happen when one of the handful who had been voted off the island makes a return - and just as it was the first time it is dramatic as that will send the house into a shocked state of panic. Along with this, an ex will be sent to the Beach of Doom for the first time, while the Shack of Secrets will reveal some dirty secrets, as well as an elimination that again will leave this bunch all shook.

The bad news for many of you: the weekend is now coming to an end, but the good news is: this is the last weekend before summer begins for most of you before Memorial Day Weekend, and if you're lucky enough to still be up here, we have this week's Pulse of Ex On The Beach USA, where an already juicy season is about to get even juicier.
Last week, there was plenty of moments that made your jaw drop, such as a double elimination that, in actuality, saw three people get the heave-ho: two tied voting rounds saw Chris' ex Chelsko and Cory's ex (and nemesis of both Angela and Taylor) Alicia BOTH get their bags packing, followed after by Chase's ex Skyler who then bolted out just after that result was revealed. But the most talked about moment so far here also came last week: when Angela found out that Tor'i had a more than sexual date with Faith, she turned to the one ex that seems to be making this house his breakthrough Trifecta season: Derrick, when the two made out in the confessional.
And if you thought that makeout session in the most secret room in the house was the biggest moment of the season, it pales in comparison to the twist that goes down this week. After the OG's have been having the upper hand in sending home four exes from Hawaii, this time a game-changing twist from left field and from the Shack of Secrets will leave the power in the hands of the exes. For the man who has found himself at the heart of the drama in Hawaii, he may find himself doing what those on a show he's been on before do best. And amidst the madness, two more exes arrive and the Aloha feeling may not get to both of them.

Tonight, the drama that has already been big in Hawaii intensifies on Ex On The Beach as yet another twist will turn the estate by the Pacific upside down. The past two weeks have seen more fireworks than you can have this close to the beginning of the summer in a place that quite literally has been blowing up outside: the most surprising invasion yet, a date that has seen the pop-off queen of her original show introduce MTV to what she does best, a hook-up that had our jaws dropping, and double trouble of different kinds.

We've written on everyone from one-time rookies Zach and Tori, to Challenge champs Brad and Veronica, and newcomers to the most recent season in Vendettas -- Melissa, Joss and Kayleigh... the ladder three are also responsible for helping set the stage for a new kind of romantic reality show.
As the new kid on the block in the MTV community, Ex On The Beach may be in many ways different from the other shows we have covered on this site the past five years, but still has the formula for success MTV viewers expect. But, to help ease the transition from what we saw from our British imports just recently in Spain, an icon of The Challenge who started on Real World four years ago, and many others from across the entire reality TV world are appearing on this first American installment of a show that debuted in Britain four years ago. So far, there's been plenty of drama that not only have glued people in from watching Jersey Shore, but also introduce new viewers to MTV's special brand of reality, and the precarious situation of MTV alumni and reality veterans being put through hell of seeing their exes invade Hawaii.
But like its Challenge counterparts, there are several people who are familiar to those who watch the broader range of reality TV, but are not quite well-known to those who just watch the channel that singlehandedly pioneered this genre. Conversely, EOTB represents the introduction to MTV Reality for those of you who got to know these people on ch2annels that have a broader appeal than just this channel's core audience of teens and young adults. And in the spirit of a preseason tradition in our Challenge coverage, we at DCBLOG would like to introduce you to the newbies -- in an MTV sense, at least -- to Ex On The Beach USA.

As we roll along on this DCBLOG 5th Anniversary Weekend as well as the one weekend Moms look forward to every year this second weekend of May, things are rapidly heating up on Ex On The Beach USA, with so much that has happened as we enter episode 4 of our stay in Hawaii.
Last week, things got even more wild when the first of the original ten who entered this house had to deal with a second ex moving in when another of Chris' exes, Haley, emerged on shore. But her entrance paled in comparison to what Cory had to endure when he and Taylor rode down the elevator to the Shack of Secrets and found his ex and her vendetta from AYTO Season 5, Alicia, waiting to pounce on him. We also had our first Getaway Date of the season when Tor'i and Faith went to have some fun, but it's at the nighttime moment of truth where things explode between them and Angela.
That episode ended just before the revealing of the second ex to go home, and this week we'll find who will get cut from Hawaii... and you will not believe the end result of that. It's what happens there and afterwards that will cause a girl who's had her moments both on this show so far and where she comes from that will might make you want to gasp. And the two ladies who've been fighting over the male representative of Bachelor Nation will soon find themselves in a love square when the next new ex moves in.

It's been an amazing weekend, and as we soak in all of what's left here on this Sunday, things are now getting into full-on heat mode in a state that, just these past few days, have seen both the heat turn up quite literally in a volcano erupting on the Big Island of Hawaii and several large tremors around our 50th State. We're talking about Week Three of Ex On The Beach.
Last week, our group of singles and a few of their exes were introduced to two of the big twists that will radiate throughout the season in the Islands: first, MTV veteran Derrick H. and Bad Girls Club alum Angela were whisked down to the Shack of Secrets, and just as what happened last year with him, a phone was center stage as she went through his device to go all in on him for his lies. His AYTO mate Andre arrived to scare his Season 5 ex Taylor and who would then be voted off the island in the first elimination, as did Chris' ex Chelsko who revealed a steamy secret of his cheating ways only to be blown back by a claim that she slept with his uncle... That turned out to be a lie when they went to the Shack to face the lie detector.
And just when you think it's gonna get more crazy, this week This week, things get even more twisted. One of the singles will begin to grapple with being the first of the original ten to move in to have another ex move into the estate Justin Bieber once called home. For another who has had it all good in landing the other member of Team MTV to move in, he also has to face the music with the ex he has most dreaded about coming here... one who also happens to be a vendetta of the girl he's seeing and who has a history of stirring the pot. And when Ex On The Beach has its first Getaway Date, things begin to go into absolute chaos -- both outside and then at the night formal... and it doesn't become a true reality show until things get as lit as you can get.
