DC ExtraTime: Before They Were MTV Stars - Fear Before Floribama

In an MTV sense, the past year has been nothing but a resurgence that has taken the channel to the enviable position of the fastest-growing network on cable. Double-digit viewership growth has bucked industry trends and made viewers want their MTV in a whole new way.
   The choice MTV and new channel boss Chris McCarthy made was to send the scripted content it tried out and had little results to its new natural habitat at the newly-launched Paramount Network, and return to what made the channel famous in the first place. That would be non-scripted reality programming that tailored to its younger Millennial audience, as well as relaunch TRL as both an on-air and digital franchise.
   Think about the past year: bosses upped the ante on The Challenge in making two of the three trilogy seasons' final prize pool a cool $1 million and launched a Pros/Stars spinoff series. They relaunched the Shore franchise after years of overseas success and used the massive audience of the return of the Jersey Shore originals and Teen Mom to help launch Ex On The Beach, Siesta Key and two of the shows that are our focus here.
   One of them helped to spur that Family Vacation we just saw down in Miami, while the other helped launch this renaissance. And both are the subject of this installment of Before They Were MTV Stars, where one person who appeared on both of those shows has had something to do with this success.

DC ExtraTime: Floribama Karaoke

Thursday saw the biggest hurricane to hit South Florida in some time when a surprise from up north came to greet the Jersey Shore Family Vacation. A teaser video that was posted on the Jersey Shore Twitter account (@JerseyShore) back in February gave everybody one thing to look forward to when this season airs, featuring one who we featured on here a long time ago when she and the one who replaced her met the brother of Tony's castmate Bruno from their Real World Skeletons season.
   Besides being the one known for his positivity, blown-out hair and bromance with Vinny (including the latest chapter of him dressing up in drag as Victoria), DJ Pauly D. came up with a prank that would change the course of history of a group dynamic that met in the iconic Shore house in Seaside Heights in 2009. He rang up Angelina Pivarnick, told her to pack her bags and come down to South Florida for a visit to their house. Except for one who did not obey that precious code, this was a total secret to the unsung hero of Mike The Situation, who had no idea of what awaited him when he opened the door. His reaction was like that of everyone else: a state of shock on his face... and it will be one that will also greet the mom club of Snooki, J-Woww and Deena come next week.

Around the moment of the latest bombshell to drop on the JS estate in a season full of them (the most notable being what we saw with Kailah's good friend Ronnie), MTV used the perfect time to tease all of us that MTV Floribama Shore will be back for its second season when it debuts in the spot Champs vs. Stars accompanies now, Tuesdays at 10PM starting June 19th. Season 1 of Floribama saw the newest group of eight party-hard Southerners take to Panama City Beach for a memorable summer that saw a parrot, a bar bet gone bad, a roommate's brother breaking the heart of one of the girls, parents deciding to party just as hard as their sons & daughters and, of course, those two famous bar brawls that turned this town into Fight City Beach.
   Because of Kyle Christie from Jersey's UK equivalent Geordie Shore being selected to go on The Challenge Vendettas, the Shore franchise was added to this blogger's MTV slate. When it debuted on April 5th, Family Vacation marked the first time I had watched & live tweeted Jersey Shore, while Floribama was added to DCBLOG's coverage schedule here - and we'll recap that first season on here early next month. And last weekend, the cast of Jeremiah, Codi, Kortni, Aimee, Kirk, Nilsa, Candace and Gus wrapped up filming an extended season compared to their first go in PCB -- 14 episodes taking them from Spring Break to even out of country. And without spoiling anything, perhaps a situation we've seen on Real World many times before may happen on Floribama... as we always say here, "stay tuned."
   Upon them leaving Panama City Beach and regaining access to their phones - and in turn returning to social media, Aimee posted a video on Twitter of her and Codi riding back from Florida, and him doing something we all like to do when we're cruising around town or just needing to kill time when sitting in rush hour traffic: sing whatever is playing on the radio. One of those songs is synonymous - at least to the millennials - with The Hangover and Mike Tyson.  Enjoy...

MTV Trifecta: Floribama Shore - The Season 1 Finale

As you all wrap up your Sunday and this first extended weekend of the new year continues along - most especially in both Jacksonville and in Minneapolis, welcome back to this week's ride Inside the MTV Trifecta. And while we got to crown winners on Champs vs. Stars and the Vendettas game becoming more twisted in this week's escape from reality, the week's biggest buzz in the MTV world comes to us by way of Panama City Beach, Florida and the season 1 finale of Floribama Shore.
   Last week, we were all reminded of how sometimes, the unexpected takes place and can happen in the worst possible way -- which was what happened to Codi when his grandpa died unexpectedly and the house did what they can to comfort him. Meanwhile, Jeremiah's friend Josh came by to see Nilsa and that didn't turn out as well as expected, and petty differences and tensions continue to mount as they head towards the end of their summer.
   And as their time in Florida comes to an end - and with the role of family being prevalent with Codi, this week the housemates invite the people who've followed their growth for one last blast of summer: their parents. Fitting for a season that's brought back the Shore franchise in grand style, you won't believe what goes down when people older than them decide to have fun. And as always, them leaving the house brings back memories, trials & tribulations, laughs & lessons of their summer.

As you all begin this first weekend of 2018 - and many of you on the East Coast are enjoying this blast of winter, welcome to the first of our weekly episode posts of the new year as DCBLOG goes Inside the MTV Trifecta. This week sees the beginning of a new season of The Challenge, and we'll have the opening act of Vendettas and the penultimate week of Champs vs. Stars straight ahead. But first on this Friday night, we begin with the appetizer to the main course by way of Panama City Beach, FL: Episode 7 of Floribama Shore.
   Last week - or Christmas Night for that matter, a friendly bet between the resident bromance of Gus and Jeremiah turns into a sour one when the duo engage in a wager of who would want to hook up with Nilsa's friend, Katrina... only for that to turn sour when news of that spreads. But it's Aimee who was the star of the night as she was treated like a Queen for a Day on Aimee Appreciation Day: pedicure and a dinner for the Princess Goddess Mermaid.
   This week - New Year's Day night, the tensions that have marked the house since they moved in continue to mount, as petty differences may threaten to tear the house apart as they wind down their summer stay in Florida. However, an unexpected death in the family for one housemate brings them down to earth and back home for mourning, and the guy who Nilsa has been seeing returns... and will he be able to make it a long-term thing with her?

In a moment, our look at the penultimate week of our stay in the Florida Panhandle as we begin this first trek in 2018 in MTV land with Floribama Shore. And as they say, welcome to the weekend.

We are now some 50 hours away from entering the new year, and welcome along to closing weekend of 2017 on DCBLOG... a record year for this site as ahead, we'll finally begin our year-end review of the Reality TV year and other things before we proceed into a new season of The Challenge. First, we begin with Episode 6 of Floribama Shore.

   Last week down in Panama City Beach - where winter has certainly arrived as it'll barely reach 50 this coming week, the cast dealt with some heat from their second straight bar brawl as they once again came together to show support for one another. For Candace and Nilsa, they went on their own love quest which included Jeremiah's brother Josh, and for a third girl in Aimee, she continued to struggle to cope with life after her ex.
   As she continues to grapple with this very reality, the one they call "Princess Goddess Mermaid" is this week's focal point as after she spirals deeper into some despair the house will do whatever they can to help her recognize who she is. But then as another night at the bar rolls along -- luckily no fight, all focus turns to what might be stooping low: a friendly bet between the bromance of the house about a visitor to the house may again split the house into taking sides again.

Late on this Saturday of Christmas weekend, welcome back to our look at the 51st week of 2017 in the MTV Trifecta. Earlier, we brought you the Bananas & Wes rivalry being renewed on Champs vs. Stars, and now we turn to Week 4 of Floribama Shore as things are again heating up as we enter the winter.
   Last week, the cloud that is Kayla Jo continued to hover over them, but the group had bigger things on their minds. First, they found themselves in the middle of a massive bar fight that spread out into the streets of Panama City Beach, and it seems as if they became closer as a family on the heels of that rough night. But what happens when another bar brawl threatens to pull them apart?
   They will be dealing with that this week in the wake of bystanders shouting obscenities at them, and once again they have to come together to show support for one another and prove that their strength in numbers is strong. For two of the girls, they go on their own love quest to find guys they might enjoy in the future, but for another one, she continues to struggle in coping with trying to revisit the wounds of her past. And what happens when a close friend of one of the guys arrives at the house? As they say, anything is possible.

After the week we've had, aren't you glad the weekend -- and for many, the holiday break -- has arrived? We are, as DCBLOG is about to take you Inside The MTV Trifecta, which this week includes the Stars getting a dose of what The Challenge is all about, and revelations on the Are You The One? Reunion, among other things to come. But first, we begin with Episode 4 of Floribama Shore as the drama is heating up.
   Last week, the guys and the girls ganged up on one another in a good old battle of the sexes, while the formidable duo with nice hairstyles in Gus and Jeremiah got a chance to do what they do best in the bed, and Aimee decided that work isn't her cup of tea and opts to give everyone a reason to go to the bathroom thanks to her taco soup. And the house took advantage of a happy hour night of drinks with fellow locals that turned into more than they bargained for.
   That would happen to be a bar brawl that breaks out in one of the clubs, and that's where this week's episode begins as they defend themselves from the onslaught of the warring tribes. However, a person who's not on this actual cast but still feels like the ninth roommate continues to be that cloud that hovers over the house by the beach. For another, they get a chance to meet the family for a change, but will another rough night on the town turn this house upside down?

It is Friday, and we have arrived at the weekend... which means we're about to take you Inside the MTV Trifecta, where ahead it's one last shot at love and money for the Are You The One? cast, players dropping like flies on Champs vs. Stars, and some XX-Xtra special. But first, we begin our look at this week with Week 2 of Floribama Shore, where things are heating up down in Florida.

   Last week, we were graced with not one, but two premiere episodes of the newest addition of the MTV Shore franchise, as eight diverse young adults from around the Southeast moved into their new digs by the beach. There, two budding romances went out for dinner on the town, a local girl who fell in love with one half of the resident bromance invaded the turf by the shore, and yes, a girl treated the bedroom as her toilet after she got hung over.

   This week, a old-fashioned battle of the sexes heats up as the guys and the girls team up to go to war with the opposite gender. For that duo who's been prowling all over the place, they finally get to do their business, and for the Princess Goddess Mermaid - she gets to make the house her special secret recipe. And as much as one rough night in Seaside brought the house together and fans to the show, a night of discount drinks in a local bar turns into a scene straight out of a Hollywood action movie, as a good old bar brawl breaks out.

After a week of depressing headlines, we've at last arrived at the begining of both the weekend and the final month of 2017, we're proud to say. And welcome again to our DCBLOG look Inside The MTV Trifecta, where coming up - there's an epic stare down between a beast and a big name on Champs vs. Stars, and crunch time arrives for Team AYTO in NOLA. But first here on this Friday, December 1st, we have something brand new for you.

   As MTV continues its renaissance in relevance and ratings this year, the newest series to take the cable pioneer by storm is now underway, as MTV Floribama Shore takes its first baby steps on the sands of the Florida Panhandle. The series marks the return of the Shore franchise that's become big around the world and which was spawned, of course, by the mega hit series Jersey Shore - which premiered eight years ago this Sunday, and whose return was announced this week, and we'll be looking at that later on tonight.

   With a new and diverse cast joining a legacy spawned by a group of nine memorable people in Seaside Heights, this week there's not one, but two episodes to begin this new journey. First, the cast will move into their new digs with all of the usual pomp and circumstance that comes with the first days in the house... and that includes having to pee in someone's bed. And then in hour two, the group gets friendly both with each other and the locals... but when a young lady tries to infiltrate the group, the ladies begin to lay claim to their turf.

This is the latest new series -- over 20 in all outside my three favorite shows -- that I have been able to follow in my five years following the MTV world socially, and because the Shore franchise will play a role in the next season of The Challenge, DCBLOG will be giving Floribama our wall-to-wall coverage treatment. It'll have own post during this winter with a Pulse diary of all the action, reaction and interaction of the cast to the episodes from the land of social media, plus a Things to Know episode recap and often an ExtraTime story. This makes this show the 21st series to be given this level of extensive coverage this site offers weekly.

The Look: Floribama Shore

Tonight sees the end of something that began when the weather was at its warmest in The Challenge XXX: Dirty 30, followed by the premiere of Champs vs. Stars and tomorrow, we'll be into the late rounds of Are You The One? Season 6. But as you all think of the holidays coming in a couple days with Thanksgiving and the joys of the Christmas season, there are some of you who still feel that the warm weather is what you like the most - with respect to the snow. That's what we have for this last post of this week's DCBLOG wave.
   As one of the first basic cable networks to produce and air its own original programming, MTV has been a pioneer in the TV industry in making it possible for low-budget series to thrive, and perfecting reality TV before it became commonplace. The impressive resume includes series like Real World, The Challenge, The Hills, Catfish, Jack@$$, The Osbournes, Beavis & Butthead and Remote Control. Music shows like TRL, 120 Minutes, Yo! MTV Raps and Unplugged, scripted fare such as Teen Wolf and Awkward, and the annual Video Music Awards are also very much notable in the channel's body of work.

   The success of those shows and many others provide the backdrop for this installment of The Look, where we will look at what is the channel's highest ever rated series, and how a longing for the past and nostalgia are channeling the vibes for MTV's newest series, Floribama Shore.
