Welcome again one and all to DC SocialPulse powered by DCNOW...it's been a little while since we've last done this, but glad to be getting back in the thick of things again, even if it's just doing this one special post in between seasons of the shows that are most followed on here: The Real World, The Challenge and Are You The One?. For 35 times earlier this year, we brought you the episode interaction from three great seasons of Ex-Plosion, AYTO S1 and Free Agents (with one special backtracked edition to come here shortly). Now, as we mark summer's end over the Labor Day weekend and with the AYTO season 2 premiere coming in a month, we're doing something different, but rather familiar.

A couple times previously, DC SocialPulse has done posts covering the social interaction surrounding the time when the music world comes together in one room to honor its best. For the 2013 American Music Awards and 2014 Grammys, DCSP brought you the twitter interaction from one of those events I look forward the most: music awards shows. Sunday, August 24 was the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, and the 31st annual edition took place for the first time at The Forum in Inglewood, CA. With great performances and moments of both the unexpected and heartfelt, it was simply girls night this year as prominent female artists dominated the headlines.

   Beyoncé received the Video Vanguard Award from Jay-Z and son Blue Ivy and dazzled the audience with a show-ending medley of her greatest hits. A year to the weekend of her famous 2013 performance, Miley Cyrus took the opportunity of accepting Video of the Year to bring awareness to America's runaway youth. Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj and Jessie J opened things with their super collaboration, while Taylor Swift, Usher and Maroon 5 retuned to the VMA stage. Iggy Azalea, Rita Ora and Sam Smith took the VMA stage for the 1st time, as did upstarts 5 Seconds of Summer. And before presenting Best Hip-Hop, Common reminded us all of Ferguson, Missouri.

   We'll have it all covered on here, with a selection of the best tweets from your favorite artists and stars, plus media and yours truly as they saw the biggest moments of the big night, all in this blog's unique play-by-play, moment-by-moment diary. And after you see how twitter saw the night that was, I'll offer thoughts on the winners of the night, a takeaway I have from watching music's best come together, and look ahead to a new show that I'll be live tweeting on DCNOW coming up this fall, plus some new plans for this site.

DC's VIEW

As I tweeted in my commentary, the 2014 VMA's was another fantastic edition of music's most unpredictable night, and a great show that always entertains me every time. I don't care what the naysayers say, I am simply someone who loves all music and looks forward to music award shows (and any event that features multiple genres) more than anything in the entertainment world, the same way I look forward to the Olympics and other big sports events. And just as is the case in other things, regardless of who the performers, presenters & attendees might be, events that bring together multiple genres of music and artists I love will always be can't miss TV.

   As I wrote in my Music World post back before last year's American Music Awards, I have a deep passion for this industry, and my playlists features both the chart-topping hits by big-name artists and tracks from new or unknown ones. Regardless of what role music has on the MTV airwaves (and I don't mind it even one bit, there's always MTV Hits & MTV Jams for the daily MTV video fix if you got digital cable like me), the VMA's are still as huge a deal and prestigious an award for artists as all others in the music world. Some artists might not win a Grammy, but winning a silver moonman is just as good as gold. And the fact that now fans have the say in who garners awards in the last big show of the summer instead of the usually reserved & broad-based Recording Academy underlines the role the fans play in music today.

   The thing I take away from watching all these music awards shows, and in taking the 'Pulse of this year's VMA's, along with the Grammys back in February and last year's AMA's, is that for one night, artists actually become fans of each other's music as they sit in the same room, just like all of us who watch at home. We see it a lot on these shows of cameras quickly cutting away from the performers onstage to reaction shots in the audience of stars singing and dancing to whomever is performing. You saw on the show, and here in the diary, of Taylor Swift dancing and or singing along to some of the artists performing on the show.

   And as documented here by the magic of Twitter, it's always awesome to see artists congratulating each other on a great performance, in winning awards, and even complementing their fashion. Two groups that ruled this night were 5 Seconds of Summer and Fifth Harmony, who each walked out of The Forum with their first moonmen in their hands and with lots to celebrate as members from both groups congratulated each other on their coming-of-age moment in the music world. We saw Britney commend Katy for her & her date taking a page from the past and wearing denim to the big show. And everyone like Taylor, Lorde, Demi, Ed Sheeran and others took the chance after the house lights came on to give a nod to one another. I always like the camaraderie and respect that artists have for one another, and it's always good; always reminiscent of what I see in sports and in the Olympics. After all, music is one of the handful of universally-spoken languages, and .

WINNERS OF THE NIGHT

For the winners of the night for this year's big show, this was quite simply Girls Night at The Forum, with the big stories of the night revolving around a great slew of ladies who, among others, are leading the pack in the music world right now. And the other huge winner of the night is the South Pacific region, which saw three artists from either Australia or New Zealand win awards in Los Angeles. But we start off with a group of fellas from Australia who made their splash this summer and capped off their breakthrough summer with their first moonman.

- 5 SECONDS OF SUMMER: When I first saw 5 Seconds of Summer perform and then kill it at the Billboard Awards in Vegas in May, I knew that they would become the next big thing in music, and now they are in the big time. Having bought their "She Looks So Perfect" EP shortly thereafter, and then picking up their debut album just recently, I'm starting to dig 5SOS. Luke, Michael, Calum & Ashton started off as a YouTube cover band performing viral covers of pop songs in their homeland of Australia, which caught the eye of One Direction, enough for the lads to tag them along for their Take Me Home tour. Late last November, 5SOS signed to Capitol and within four months "She Looks So Perfect" was released at the same time they joined the 1D guys again for their Where We Are trek. Ironically, both groups are so linked (including sharing the same management) that the media jokingly referred to the rockers as a boy band, which is farther from the truth but do maintain the same sizable female fanbase. This spring, that debut single was released and peaked at #1 in Australia and Britain, followed by the summer release of their self-titled debut full-length album which entered at #1 in the U.S. (best 1st week sales for a debut album since Daughtry) & in all major countries. Now with their first moonman, the sky's the limit for 5SOS.

- ED SHEERAN: Lately, I've been accompanied on the MTV airwaves by the sight of some very good ginger fellas: Robb during Real World St. Thomas and Challenges BOTS2 & Rivals II and Wes during Rivals II. In the past couple years, Englishman singer/songwriter and ginger fella Ed Sheeran has had an amazing ride ever since he was first discovered by Jamie Foxx while he was on a Los Angeles vacation in April 2010, followed by word-of-mouth buzz on YouTube. After he gained a great following in Britain and after performing at both the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympic Closing Ceremony, Ed first made a name for himself in America by cameoing on Taylor Swift's Red album and writing songs for One Direction before releasing his debut track "The A-Team." That helped him snag two nominations for Song of the Year and Best New Artist at the 2013 Grammys, as well as the opening act spot for Taylor's Red Tour. This past June, his sophomore effort, X, which means "multiply," charted at #1 in the U.K. and the U.S., with "Sing" becoming a #1 single in Britain and giving him his first moonman. Ed Sheeran is now a star and destined for more great things. Gingers rule.
- FIFTH HARMONY: There's the Spice Girls, Destiny's Child, The Saturdays, Little Mix and Girls Generation. Now, you can add Fifth Harmony to the line of girl groups who've ascended to the top of the pops, and winning the biggest award of their career and performing on the red carpet is this night of their lives. Like One Direction before them and Emblem3 who competed in the same season as them, fans first discovered Ally, Camila, Normani, Dinah Jane and Lauren on The X Factor. After being all teamed together as a group by Simon Cowell, their dedication and hard work helped them make it all the way to the finals and though they finished in 3rd place in 2012, they eventually became X-F USA's most-successful act. The next year, their debut EP & single "Miss Movin' On" made a strong debut on the charts and were invited by Cher Lloyd and Demi Lovato to be their opening tour acts. Eventually, they would excel on their own, and the huge support of their fans known as the "Harmonizers" helped carry them to victory over co-fan favorites 5SOS, as well as Sam Smith, Charli XCX and Schoolboy Q in what's formerly called Best New Artist. But having sold-out shows worldwide, chart-topping hits and finally winning their first major award, Fifth Harmony has a strong future ahead to perhaps reach the enormous level the Spice Girls had in their heyday.

- ARIANA GRANDE: Along with opening this year's VMA's, Ariana Grande picked up the Best Pop award this year, and adds to an award case that also includes, among others, Best New Artist at last year's AMA's and People's Choice Breakout Artist. Plus there's the buzz that her half-brother Frankie is shacking up in this summer's Big Brother house. A fellow member of the Viacom family in doing Victorious and Sam & Cat on MTV's younger sib Nickelodeon, Ariana began to expand beyond acting into doing music two years ago. But last year, she became a even more well-known household name last year when her debut album Yours Truly entered the BB200 at #1 and her lead single, "The Way" with Mac Miller, landed her in the BB Top 10, bringing echoes of her wide vocal range to that of Mariah Carey. She then landed a brief opening act spot with Justin Bieber and then the First Family twice invited her to the White House. This summer, Ariana's 2nd album My Everything dropped just 48 hours after the VMA's, with both of her singles "Problem" and "Break Free" landing her in the Top 5. And with her super collaboration with Jessie J and Nicki Minaj, "Bang Bang" joining them in the Top 10, she joined Adele as the only female artists with three simultaneous top 10's as lead artist, joining Ashanti who pulled off her hat trick as both a lead & collaboration artist.

- IGGY AZALEA: For the blonde rapper who collaborated with Ariana on "Problem," Iggy Azalea also had a breakthrough VMA night, as she also started duties as host of House of Style the same day. Iggy grew up in North New South Wales, Australia and left for the southern U.S. at age 16 to pursue hip-hop. She first made a name for herself with two viral YouTube hits and a mixtape which caught the eye of T.I. and led her to being signed by his imprint Grand Hustle in summer 2012. She also added a professional modeling career to her resume as face of Levi's. This April, her debut studio album The New Classic was finally released and dropped at #3, but it was the single "Fancy" that gave her two slices of history. When it peaked in late May, it made her just the 4th female solo rapper to occupy BB's Hot 100 #1. And when "Problem" rose to #2 that same week, Iggy became the first solo artist (and 2nd after The Beatles) to rank 1-2 simultaneously with their first two Hot 100 hits. With her diving into acting as part of Fast & Furious 7 next year, Iggy is poised to become hip-hop's next big thing.

- LORDE: Fans might dispute whether "Royals" is classified as whether it's worthy enough to win Best Rock at the VMA's over my boys Linkin Park and Imagine Dragons. But fans might not know that track actually was released first to alternative stations before crossing over to all genres to become her signature song, and making her the first female to win the Best Rock moonman. Still, it's great to see Lorde continue to receive great accolades in the year since that breakthrough anthem first debuted and go on to top the BB Hot 100. Ever since, she's also notched a couple Grammys, two Billboard awards, three World Music Awards, International Female Solo Artist at the Brit Awards and four in her own country's music awards. She had the opportunity to play with the surviving members of Nirvana at the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, and will be curating & perform the lead single of the soundtrack to the 3rd installment of The Hunger Games this fall, as she preps her sophomore release.

- MILEY CYRUS: The winner of the night's last general award also made a total turnaround from what has been happening to her in the past 12 months. Almost a year to the day of the 2014 show, Miley Cyrus caught everyone's attention in Brooklyn with a headline-making VMA performance that divided fans & viewers yet became a pop culture landmark that brought the "twerk" to the apex of our attention. "Wrecking Ball" won the night's top prize, Video of the Year, and instead of her accepting her first moonman, she turned the stage over to someone other than her, who was also her date. A former homeless youth from Oregon who settled in L.A. by the name of Jesse Helt accepted the award on her behalf and dedicated it to the country's 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth. Miley shed some tears watching from side stage as he directed fans to her Facebook page to join the fight to end youth homelessness. Jesse wrapped up his speech with an emotional quote, "A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is a reality." And though he would surrender to Oregon police just days later, that became one of the most unique moments in the long history of the VMA's. And along with the tributes to Ferguson, MO and Robin Williams, this night provided us plenty of opportunities to think and reflect, and realize there's things bigger than music.

- BEYONCÉ: For the closing act of this year's VMA's, it was left in the hands of an MTV Icon. Beyoncé took the stage by performing a medley of songs from her visual album Beyoncé. Like some of her storied contemporaries, she became a trailblazer by celebrating where she is as an artist right now and revealed her personal, family life with poignant images from her home movie collection showing her as a wife and mom to her new daughter. The backdrop also included female empowerment messages and a call to feminism from a Nigerian writer. And after breaking Justin Timberlake's 1-year reign as longest VMA performance ever and in the night's most emotional moment, Jay-Z & Blue Ivy joined her on-stage to present her the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, where Beyoncé took the chance to thank God, her daughter, Jay, MTV and her fans. In addition to receiving the Vanguard, she also took Best Collaboration for "Drunk in Love" with Hova, and "Best Video with a Message" for "Pretty Hurts." Beyoncé has been one of my favorite artists going back to when she was with Destiny's Child more than 15 years ago, and this is a crowning moment of her career to receive the highest accolade MTV can bestow. The fact she also had not just her family but also her adopted sisters in fellow DC3 mates Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams on hand made this night a memorable one. And she silenced those who thought her marriage was dunzo.

WELCOME TO TEAM MTV: SLEDNECKS

Now, you know me as a huge fan of The Real World and The Challenge, and now Are You The One?. But as I've written so many times, I'm not one who watches MTV just for those now-three shows and of course the VMA's. Any & every show is open to me, though my focus is more on reality shows with competition, storytelling and docu-series with a large or mixed gender cast (with respect to the TM/16&P ladies and casts of its scripted fare). And of course, social media and the fan friendly nature of Team MTV have contributed greatly to me sampling & ultimately enjoying shows outside of the BMP bubble. Over this summer, and though I've had only one show to live tweet, I've really been enjoying Virgin Territory, which has been documenting young adults going through the decision of having sex or not, while also documenting their lives in love.

   This fall will see not just season 2 of Are You The One?, but also a new show from the people who brought us Buckwild. Barring any additions that might come now until its premiere on Halloween Eve, Slednecks will become the latest new show for me to live tweet on DCNOW, making it the 12th new MTV show and 16th overall season that I've followed since joined twitter two years ago.

   Many fans have been quick to judge this as a Buckwild revival in the way that the show is continuing the fun-filled comedy and wild nature of the great outdoors MTV style, but I'm not one to judge. Having bought the DVD of Buckwild and talking socially with most of the cast during their short but sweet run, I had plenty of laughs with our friends in West Virginia. And given that my parents went on a cruise to the 49th State of the Union, and also enjoying the promos for it during the VMA's, I confident that this new show will carry on that tradition and allow me to enjoy a trip to the land of the midnight sun.

   And if I enjoy the competiton of The Challenge, the great storytelling I'm more used to on The Real World and most MTV shows, and the hybrid success of that show that brings it all together in Are You The One?, then why not add some laughs and fun to the menu? I can't say no to letting my hair down and enjoy some chuckles. I'll be looking forward to Halloween Eve when Slednecks premieres.

   Plus in addition, as part of the lead up to Slednecks, I plan on doing DCNOW Retro Night's for Buckwild in the coming weeks. I never got the chance to simultaneously live tweet and watch it back then as I do for the trifecta, so this will be a new experience for me to check out this show and reconnect once again socially with Shae, Katie, Anna, Ashley, Tyler, Cara and Salwa (just released from jail) before the new kids take over.

Finally, what you've seen here was just a special edition of DC SocialPulse as, technically, the diaries are still are on its summer vacation...that is, in between seasons of The Real World, Challenge and Are You The One?. But don't worry, like many of your favorite shows, they will be back this fall.

   This special VMA SocialPulse is just a warm-up act for what this site will have when season 2 of Are You The One? takes shape, and of course we will be on top of it all. Again, DCBLOG will have exclusive cast twitter diaries, recaps, Fan's View and more. And our coverage begins in the coming days with a preview of this season and a primer for those being introduced to AYTO for the first time, followed by the season premiere of DCSP, which will be AYTO: Special Delivery later this month when the season 1 cast reunites to celebrate Ethan & Amber's pending marriage & new baby.

   But in an effort to expand my MTV show coverage in this coming cycle, I'm also considering adding blog interviews on here with cast members. Having taken part in webcasts with MTV personalities and doing my Fan's View posts here, now I feel like I'm ready to take the next step and chat with cast members, albeit in a print form. I'll talk more about this next evolution of my coverage in my AYTO Season 2 preview.

   MTV shows aside, there's plenty of sports posts that unfortunately have been backtracked, but the good news is they'll be released during this busy fall schedule.
