Back with you again for another edition of SocialPulse as our coverage of Real World Ex-Plosion continues. And please don't mind the length of this article...it's gonna be long but worth the read to cover everything of what has to be one of the most emotion-packed episodes we've seen in a while. Last week, we had another drama-filled episode where the two Texas roommates finally made things official when Tom & Jamie became boyfriend & girlfriend. The other supposed couple, Jenny & Cory, saw that relationship collide with the rocks after another hookup as Cody's anger at locals turned violent. And there was some more Ashley talk, some sex talk and even talk about numbers.
Today, we will look back at episode 3 entitled "The Departure," as well as the season's first After Show. And this is probably one of my favorite episodes in this current generation of Real World's as it featured a roller coaster of emotions that rolled through my and everyone's head during those 90 minutes. We saw the relationship between Cory and Jenny reach a turning point, while the tensions between Ashley and the rest of the house reach a boiling point. And in a moment that harks back some memories and represents one of those instances when the show is in its simplest & purest form, the likable fella from the Bronx receives the worst possible news anyone can get when Jay's mom suddenly passed away just shortly after he left. All in all, it was an eventful episode, and given the circumstances, this delay from it being posted from the night after to before the weekend is necessary & worthy for it to be covered through a historical angle. More on that during our episode wrap.

THE WRAP... And Perspective
On to the wrap... And this will be a long one, folks. In addition to recapping this episode, and just as we did during Rivals II, we will also debut a further aspect of our coverage of RW Ex-Plosion in covering it with a historical background and through a unique angle (more posts will be coming throughout the season). And in particular, we'll be putting one of the show's most-heartbreaking moments that we saw this week into perspective with other life-changing moments from past.
While Cory dons the same bear suit from the premiere to surprise passersby in the City, for one of the roommates, it's a birthday in the RW house as Jenny celebrates her lucky day. As she dances and everyone celebrates, he meets a guy named Oscar the Grouch and Cory becomes jealous. And just as we saw last week, once they're back at the pad, they start arguing and Cory runs around uttering "Day 2", that day they first hooked up. Though they're jealous of each other, it can all stem from feelings they have for one another, just as we've seen on previous seasons.
Then comes Hurricane Ashley. In my live tweets, I questioned who was the one who ripped up Jay's contact list? I left it up to everyone else to answer that one, but as fans know, it's the main house phone that has historically been one of the two contacts the cast has with the outside world. Jay brought that list with him to the City and kept it in the phone room instead of being pinned to his wall. One day, they're found ripped up and spread throughout that room, but no one in the house is able to step forward to take responsibility. Thanks to the spycam, Ashley is caught in the act, but given her drunk state she has absolutely no idea about it. This torn up list would prevent Jay from not calling any of his friends & family, but ultimately when it mattered the most.
After seeing all that in the premiere and not much last week, Ashley has another freak out. We don't know what sparked this latest one - aside from the good stuff, but Ashley tells the roommates that she's dunzo. She tells them where to go in the City, which people she knows in the area, and lets them know she won't give them another free bottle at the club. The next night at the club, Ash spots her boyfriend with the European accent Francis and doesn't return home. As she resides in the city before all this began, it's the reason why producers haven't picked locals much in recent seasons out of fear they may run away back home if they're not comfortable living in the house. The other roomies don't know of her whereabouts, but are too busy getting to know Arielle's ex-GF Ashley C. to mind about it. Then after Jay returns he answers Ashley's call and she tells them she wants to return to the house, but only on the condition that the rest of them would be willing to do so. And in a house vote, while Jay & Jenny vote in favor of Ashley, it's Arielle, Tom, Jamie & Cory who go the other way. Ashley is evicted.
Because of the fact that I am and will remain neutral & cordial with all of the cast equally, and with the added fact that Ashley follows me on twitter and being good friends with everyone, unlike other fans I am not obligated to voice my opinion here or elsewhere of whether she should be kicked out or not, out of fear that I might compromise my impartiality to support one side or the other. But I have heard from people who side with the cast in kicking her out, and from those who side with Ashley and want another shot. So, I'll just remain Switzerland and stay out of the drama.
But the lingering memory I have of this episode is what happened with Jay. While I was following a little bit of filming while I was fixated on Rivals II last summer & fall and sometimes checked the cast's twitters which were frozen during those three months, having read a couple tweets from one of them I had a feeling in the back of my head that something very sad might occur when we finally get to watch this in the new year. And we saw that all unfold in this episode.
Jay was one of the first from this RW Ex-Plosion cast I got to talk to in the social world, and also seems to have the biggest support from cyberspace thanks to the thousands of followers & friends on the major social nets. And from watching these first three episodes as well as the casting tape I discovered on YouTube (http://youtu.be/77x2MHTqcq8), he seems the calmest & coolest person in the house, having not been involved in much drama, save for having that contact list being torn up. Watching the premiere when we saw him hang out with his family and then say goodbye to his mom, you could see how he is the same down-to-earth guy both at home in the Bronx, as he is in the Bay Area.
And then, just a couple weeks after he left for the West Coast, there comes that dreaded phone call. When I watched that moment, I tweeted, "Oh dear. This is the worst possible news you could ever imagine. Nothing as heartbreaking as when a family member suddenly passes away." Jay's father would call him to inform him that his mother had just died. Having battled cancer for years, she was supposed to go into surgery, but Lucy Mitchell could not make it through the procedure in the operating room. As you would suspect, Jay is shocked by this sudden death and immediately has tears in his eyes. And instead of being with family back home when this all occurred, he would have to turn to his newfound family of roommates for comfort, as they consoled him and also shared in his grief. Everyone else makes sure to be available for him, and they become his main system of support. And just after that life-changing call, Jay would take a last minute flight home to New York for a few days for her mom's funeral, eventually returning to the warm reception of his roommates at SFO.
When I watched that, while I didn't shed a single tear like many other viewers, I was surprised like everyone else that someone who is as awesome & as laid-back as Jay would get the worst possible news of his mom's passing. For the way he handled that situation with the same kind of class and dignity made me respect him even more. And in the days since the episode aired, he has received an outpouring of tweets & messages of support from both fans like myself and the close-knit Real World/Challenge community, along with texts from his family. This also created a trending twitter topic during the episode with the hashtag #PoorJay.
My family, primary & extended, has never had this traumatic experience of a family member, a cousin or an uncle, aunt or grandparents passing away suddenly in my lifetime - going back 30 years. But this year is the 10th anniversary of my grandpa's death, who passed away peacefully after an long illness on the day after Christmas in 2004 in the Philippines. And most every other passing in my family circles has been peaceful, without incident and after a long illness. But I also know of some friends I went to school with & are Facebook friends with me, too many to mention here, who have had to deal with a loved one suddenly being gone in an instant. And if they're able to watch this episode, they'll certainly relate to Jay and what he had to go through. We all have to remember to take advantage of every moment we can with family, friends and loved ones because we never know what could happen next.
Putting this into perspective as a longtime Real World fan, this also brings me back to other times when a roommate suddenly had to cope with the ultimate heartbreak of the sudden passing of a family member or one of their friends during their stay, or any other life-changing phone call for that matter.
- The first instance of life-changing calls took place in Seattle, where we saw Lindsey suddenly break down in the phone area when her family back home called to give her the awful news of her friend Bill committing suicide, just weeks after he & her brother visited her and after having a bout with depression.
- In Hollywood while they pursued their showbiz aspirations, it was Nick who dealt with the news via phone when someone he, Kim and Sarah worked with on a web project (and Bay Area native), Brandon Schantz, had lost his battle with cancer, and the usually reserved fella was in tears, along with both ladies.
- For the Back to Las Vegas cast, we saw three instances. First, there was Nany and her quest to find the biological father she never got to meet. But after meeting a P.I. and after flying to the East Coast, he broke the news that her dad passed away peacefully several years earlier, though he did find siblings who would join Nany to ultimately visit the elder Gonzalez's grave at the end of episode 12.
- A week later in the finale, a guy who's also down-to-earth like Jay, Leroy got a call from a friend back home in Detroit that a friend of his, Brandon, was shot & killed by police after a armed traffic stop. Usually reserved, he showed a rare moment of emotion when he cried in Mike's shoulder and would fly home to attend Brandon's funeral and returned a couple days for the last few days in Vegas.
- And two years later on Rivals II following the season's first challenge, fellow Vegas XXV roommate and Jay's fellow Bronx native, Naomi got a call from back home that her dad's health was getting to the point where he may pass away at any moment. She would make the wise decision to leave and received partner Cooke's full support as she flew back to say goodbye to Mr. Defensor.
- And while this didn't involve a death in the family, in Brooklyn there was the call from back home in Gettysburg, PA that war veteran Ryan received on Veterans Day that, through a letter from the army his family received that day & by the mere luck of being picked in a lottery, that he would be recalled back into active duty in Iraq. He, too, shed some tears being surprised by that news.
But the most vivid memory of this instance, and the signature moment of that season, was in Austin, and what happened there nine years ago ran parallel with what happened on Wednesday. It was when he was supposed to go on a Valentine's Day date with who would become his future wife, Melinda, that Danny received a life-changing call from his dad back home in Boston. It was, while he was out preparing for the occasion, that earlier in the day his mom had suffered a fatal heart attack. After hanging up, Danny was nothing but overcome with emotion and instead of being with his family in New England, he had to look to his new family of roommates for comfort during the worst time of his life. And like Jay, Danny took a temporary leave of absence from the house for a little while to fly back home to say goodbye to Mrs. Jamieson. And just as with this season's cast, the Austin roommates would all share in this unexpected moment of grief with Danny, just like any family would.
Whether it's documenting young people going through life-changing moments such as what we saw with Jay, when it's putting a mirror on social issues affecting the two generations who've grown up with the show, or showcasing the real-life struggles of the strangers that viewers can directly relate to, it's where The Real World has always shone the best. For every hookup, fight or sip of alcohol, there's always been at least one moment in every season where the show is in its purest form and exactly as it was when it began 22 years ago. Until 1992, MTV viewers had never seen a show where a generation, their struggles and the issues they're passionate about be reflected on TV. And it was the casts being able to open up to each other, to the cameras and to viewers that has made them more them more than just seven strangers we watch each week, but thanks now to social media, our friends as well.
Understanding how thousands of fans on twitter expressed their grief and sorrow for Jay the moment they saw him cry after his mom's passing is testament to how social media has made today's casts more fan friendly than it was only a few years ago. And whenever the cameras focus in on him & other people going through the experience of growing up and maturing into becoming young adults, and those events that can change their lives, folks can see why it has remained one of the handful of shows that's had staying power.
Overall, I definitely enjoyed this episode, just like everyone else. And through three episodes, I am also definitely enjoying Real World Ex-Plosion. While many people and traditionalists were skeptical at the start of all this when the cast and the first-ever twist were revealed on, of all things, my 30th birthday last November (though for myself I handled the change rather easily), it also seems that their sketchy first impressions have mainly disappeared to the point that they're enjoying this season, even with some tweaks to the long RW formula. We've seen the things that have made it that one show where I'm comfortable with, and the things that continue to get people talking around the water cooler. And from this episode, it hasn't forgotten about the things that makes it stand out as not just as another reality show, but a documentary-based series rooted in that experiment in SoHo.
And while I don't usually mention viewership or numbers thereof on here, and with respect to the friends I've made with the St. Thomas & Portland casts and the rest of the RW/CHAL community, the fact that the events of this episode created two trending topics on Wednesday, that it was the highest-rated RW episode in three years, and the bombshell that we'll be seeing next week will indicate that this show is finally on the rebound. And with the exes making their entry next week, you can suspect that it is going up from here, and the folks at BMP can start planning on how to celebrate the big 3-O.
And after all of that, I'm really anticipating that coming episode. It is, from reading a couple of my followers' tweets, the one everyone's waiting for. After one of those excursions they will go on in our backyard, how will the remaining six roommates react when their ex-boyfriend and girlfriends pop up in the kitchen to reveal the biggest twist the show has ever seen? How will a budding relationship between the Texans in the house be affected when Tom's ex from Dallas, Hailey, moves in to join him & Jamie? What about Cory and Jenny who'll have to handle having his ex Lauren and her ex Brian share the same room together? And we can't forget about Arielle's ex & local girl Ashley C., and Jay's ex Jenna who we saw when he was back home. All the answers and more will be on hand in a few days' time. And all I can say is, stock up on the popcorn, gonna get very scandalicious.
DC Blog will be on top of the twist that comes a calling next week as we continue our coverage of this already dramatic Real World that is about to be turned on its head.
