A DCBLOG Thanksgiving Special
BY DC CUEVA
@DC408Dxtr / @DC408DxNow

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you from all of us at DCBLOG, myself and my family. We hope you all are enjoying these four days off to enjoy time with family and friends, and kick back to have food, watch football, take part in the mall madness and endure hours of travel on this kickoff weekend of the holiday season.
This week, we are taking advantage of this holiday break in the MTV Trifecta and the current season of The Real World in Seattle to bring you long-form stories from our extensive coverage of the Real World/Challenge franchise, and Are You The One?. And tonight, we begin with a special, expanded version of a unique and inspiring story from my strongest passion.

At DCBLOG, the Trifecta is our pride and joy...we bring you insightful and outstanding coverage of the three shows that galvanize viewers with its drama, its unexpected twists & turns, and its amazing people. And while we bring you all the social reaction to every episode of the three shows, and recap them too, our focus and specialty is original storytelling. We put our lens on the stories of this ecosystem brought to us by the more than 300+ alumni and current cast members of those shows and the erstwhile Road Rules. Behind these people and the moments they bring us are stories, large & small, from around the spectrum. And often, it's these kinds of stories that stand out in our coverage and present these people in a unique light outside of the TV screen.
Most of our MTV Trifecta posts feature ExtraTime, which gives us the chance to tell these stories to you, so you can understand these people better and this world around us through the prism of the Trifecta. At the end of our Pulse diaries and Wrap recaps, or in their own dedicated posts such as this one, ExtraTime has been able to tell these great stories, both big & small, and provides more context to these people than just what MTV shows us each week. We've been able to present a slew of stories spanning both the serious and the silly, the inspiring and the unique. There is no ecosystem in reality TV that offers great drama on the screen, and fascinating stories and people off of it.

For this, our first long-form story of this cycle, this involves the person who is, along with host TJ Lavin, the face of The Challenge and whose popularity, notoriety and stature have increased over the years to where he is synonymous with this show. Starting on his original Real World season, he has had an incredible run over the past ten years spanning fourteen shows, and the latest chapter of what he did this past summer embodies the love/hate persona he has with fans, viewers and everyone within the community of this ecosystem. But as you will find out, it is not totally representative of who he is as a person overall...not everything about him is of a negative stigma.
It is the story of a unique individual who lives and breathes the world's most popular sport but then was sidelined by a rare disease. Her story of survival invokes the story of a woman who epitomized the spirit of never giving up in the face of adversity, and how like a person who battled ovarian cancer, overcame her own battle against a childhood form of cancer, all while who she was inspired by would ultimately succumb to cancer. And along the way, she has established a special friendship with a man, who despite having a somewhat questionable image to many, has a softer side to him after the humbling experience of losing one of his best friends to cancer two years ago this month.

We've brought you this story here before, but having just marked the second anniversary of both the passing of Challenge legend Diem Brown and the disease diagnosis of the co-subject of this post at the same time, this week we're revisiting it in a longer form in light of what happened to him the last time we saw him on our screens. This story would've been lost in the shuffle if not for what happened at the end of Rivals III this past summer, but a story like this is so unique and special that we feel it deserves to be told on its own here, especially with us being able to present this during this time of family bonding and time of inspiration on this Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
On this first installment of DC ExtraTime In-Depth, we proudly present a story of perseverance and true inspiration, and the unique relationship of a six-time Challenge champion and someone who overcame the odds. This is the story of Johnny Bananas & Kasey Harvey: A Diem Strong Bond.

Ten years ago on February 28, 2006 - two days after the Winter Olympic flame was extinguished in Torino, Italy, a guy from Orange County, CA announced his arrival on our screens. John Devenanzio made his debut on Real World Key West as that man who we saw dress up as Scooby-Doo running around the campus of Penn State University in his casting tape. And then, he gets splash in his face against the Florida sunset of the Season 17 version to the famed opening title sequence of MTV's longest-running series and the pioneer of reality TV. We met him as the guy who the bio described as "Real World's own Ferris Bueller...an unpredictable mixture of craftiness, charisma, intelligence and kindness." The man they call Johnny Bananas endured three hurricanes, bonded with Zach, clashed with Tyler and Paula, flirted with Svetlana, and entertained us in America's southernmost city.
Of course, that was all a warm-up act for what would come afterwards, as Johnny would then begin an unbelievable run on the spinoff show, The Challenge. It has seen him do thirteen of these shows and has, over time, built a renowned reputation as the most loved - and hated - person of not just The Challenge, but the entire MTV Trifecta. Bananas has been on The Duel, The Inferno 3, The Gauntlet III, The Island, Ruins, Cutthroat, Rivals, Exes, Rivals II, Free Agents, Exes II, Bloodlines and Rivals III. After winning the last one, this great and hard-working competitor has won six Challenge titles and has amassed nearly $700,000 in prize money - both records in this Challenge universe. There have been so many moments involving him over the years - both good and bad and too many to mention in this single post. And he has a gold-medal girlfriend to come home to (and travel with) in 2006 Olympic snowboarding gold medalist Hannah Teter.
At the same time, Bananas has also built a persona that has made us either love or hate him. He has manipulated challengers and people he calls "friends" more often than we can count with our fingers. The way he has played this game and maneuvering the politics of it since debuting on The Duel has created friends and enemies on both sides of the ball, often finding himself at the heart of the drama. And what happened on the Rivals III finale last summer when, in a decision that became famous and infamous, he decided to take all the first place money -- $275,000 in all -- from partner Sarah Rice as payback for her move of eliminating him on Exes II a year ago, is one of this year's biggest TV moments, an all-time moment of controversy in the history of the Trifecta and the reality TV genre, and indicative of the love/hate personality he possesses.
He has also been ridiculed by people who hate him for being someone who just lives off of the money he makes off of his exposure and having no regular job to fall back on. There was that beef a few years back with the Entourage franchise over the usage of his nickname, the many times he's found himself in hot water for his behavior, and even having his very own bobble doll with his own T-shirt on it as well. And thanks to social media not only is he one of the most followed MTV people on all platforms, he also has to endure the weight of tons of hate also. But then again, there's nobody in this ecosystem who's driven, devoted, determined and dedicated to his craft of executing and mastering the thing they call the fifth major pro sport --- something that he's been doing for a decade now. It's not officially a Challenge until he proposes a toast the moment the competitors set foot in the house for the first time before they go into battle.
Johnny reminisced on his tenure in the RW/Challenge franchise on the 10th anniversary of RW Key West in an interview for MTV.com he did earlier this year during Bloodlines:
"It's crazy to think that it's been ten years already, because I auditioned and basically started this journey when I was in college. And it's crazy to look back and be like, 'It's almost been ten years since it all began.' It's funny to be looking back and watching not just my original season of Key West - not even going far back - but also watching the second, third, fourth Challenge that I was on and just seeing how much different I look, how much different I act, like what a different person I am now than I was back then. I wouldn't change a thing. I mean, it's doing these Challenges that have given me the opportunity to see the world. I have more stamps in my passport than both of my parents got combined. I've been able to compete, I've been able to find things about myself not just physically but also emotionally and mentally that you know didn't existed. It really has enabled me to not just grow up, but also watch myself grow up. So, it's been a unique experience that not many people get to share."

Two years ago this month, Johnny and the entire Real World & Challenge community were touched deeply by two events that shook to the very core of this sometimes dysfunctional but always tight-knit family. In a span of only 13 days in mid & late November 2014, just four months removed from having filmed Battle of the Exes 2 with them in South America, two-time cancer survivor & Challenge vet Diem Brown and lovable funny man Ryan Knight were both taken from us too soon. It was a month that no one in this MTV ecosystem would ever forget, and the profound impact of the untimely passings of the two are still felt even today.
While the death of the Real World Back to NOLA alum early on Thanksgiving morning was a sudden & unexpected tragedy, it was her passing on Nov. 14th after a courageous third battle with ovarian cancer that had the greatest impact on fans of MTV's longest-running franchise since Pedro Zamora's valiant battle against AIDS twenty years earlier. Ask anyone who crossed paths with her or watched Diem on TV, and they'll tell you where they were when they found out the news on that Friday afternoon that changed everyone's lives. The tremendous outpouring of support from castmates and fans alike on social media that weekend served as a testament to the impact she had on both those in and outside the MTV community.
With this event bringing a sense of humbleness to his otherwise wildcard personality, it didn't take long for the champ to honor the legacy of his friend and castmate as he and his MTV family paused and united in solidarity in honor of their fallen comrades. Bananas created #DiemStrong T-shirts to honor a woman with a "unique and special soul" who he had competed alongside with several times, and of course was the longtime girlfriend of his rival, CT. Proceeds from the shirt sales, which bears an image of her dancing in front of the water fountain at New York's Lincoln Square, are donated to the charity website Diem left behind as her legacy, MedGift, and he & fellow castmates wore that shirt after Exes 2 ended.
He says, "After Diem passed, you always had this feeling that when someone close to you passes away, what more can I have done? I saw an opportunity once (Exes 2) came out as, 'Listen, I'm gonna find a way to help keeping her memory live on. It was just a simple act of creating a T-shirt and selling a T-shirt and putting a T-shirt in a bag and sending it to people. Now, when it's all said and done, it has the ability to affect the outcome of someone's life. There was never a person -- there was never a face -- that this money was going to help."
It's during this time of remembrance that he got to meet perhaps the most inspirational fan the Trifecta has known.

For Kasey Harvey, the beautiful game is in her blood: she is a goalkeeper on a local club in the San Diego area who had aspirations of one day playing on the U.S. Women's National Team and donning the same uniform as Mia Hamm, Abby Wambach and the powerhouse nation of their rapidly-growing sport. But one week in the same month when Diem was battling for her life, the life of this middle school student and soccer player used to seeing challenges coming her way by the opposition breaking away towards her would be altered drastically in an eye blink. And soon, she would find herself in the biggest fight she has ever endured against an inimitable opponent.
After telling her family of having a cold while at dinner a few nights earlier in the early part of November, she woke up to a sore cheek. After taking medication for a couple days, Kasey's left side of her face had swollen considerably while she slept, and the Harvey family took her to the hospital for a suspected sinus infection. Following several hospital & dental trips to receive antibiotics and take tests and scans to cure an affected tooth, her family thought that they had solved the problem. But what they didn't know that this was just the beginning of what would be the toughest month they have ever had to endure.
On Sunday, November 16 -- two days after Diem Brown's death, Kasey and her family drove up to Orange County to rejoin her soccer team before a tournament at Walt Disney World in Orlando. The Harvey's were talking about how relieved they were that Kasey was okay and that there was nothing to be worried about. After a good game seen by the family on the sidelines, they told her that things would being going back to normal with her returning to full training in preparation for their time in Florida. But when they began to take their commute back home, they discovered that they had forgotten something at the school and took a u-turn back to retrieve it. They had no idea what would await them.

Kasey's father, Rodney, spotted his wife, Susan, on the sidewalk waving to inform them of the news they totally didn't expect... In three words, it all changed for them: "Kasey has cancer."  In his first-hand account at KaseyHarvey.com, the dad remembered, "My world stopped. The next 20 minutes were an out of body experience... I drop to my knees and I beg for answers... I would exchange my life right then and there on that sidewalk and Kasey would live on cancer free...I knew this was no quick-fix cancer." He held out hope that this would be a disease that, although the process would take long, it would be one that they can beat out and survive, despite a cure rate of 30% and that it can be curable.
After composing themselves at dinner and knowing that others around the world are fighting the fight, the next day the Harvey family went to San Diego Children's Hospital for testing and to get the news. When doctors came in, they told them that Kasey was diagnosed with "Rabdomyosarcoma," or RMS for short - a rare cancer usually found in children that's highly malignant and aggressive, and whose detection rate is a scarce 4.5 in 1 million children, with 250 new cases each year. Her cancer was found in the maxillary sinus located below her left eye, and Kasey was admitted for testing with the hope that the cancer will be curable. Rodney Harvey posted on Facebook afterwards, "The next few days will be heavy s___ indeed." The process was just only beginning.
It was no surprise that the family received tons of support from friends, Kasey's teammates and their respective families as all of the tests she took in the days after turned out negative and chemotherapy and radiation treatment would begin in earnest on November 20. For the next 12 months, they would receive treatments every three weeks as well as have her help rebuild the strength and fitness from before the diagnosis was detected. And just as it was for Diem, there was the uneasy feeling of having just a bald head with all of her hair having to fall out, as well as temporarily having one of her eyes covered after surgery was done on the affected eye.
Rodney wrote on KH.com, "It’s going to be a 52 week journey that will be incredibly tough for Kasey. As her “Daddy” I am scared of what it will do to my baby but as her buddy and personal coach over the past seven years of her sports, I am there to make sure she endures the pain, survives, rehabilitates and is even stronger than before. Kasey is an incredible human being and will win this game. While doing so, Kasey will deliver a message to those out there facing adversity that anything is possible to achieve with positive thoughts AND the ability to control ones mind (and fear) when faced with life threatening danger while focusing on what needs to be done to win/survive. It’s a long fight and one that is sure to dish up some surprises and direction changes along the way."

For the next several months, life would be very much different for him (a former New Zealand rugby player), Kasey and the entire Harvey family as chemotherapy began for their daughter, as well as a rigorous exercise regimen and diet to make sure she is as strong as she can. Kasey also had to endure having a face that's swollen and bruised, and uneasy nights of not sleeping due to pain, weakness and vomiting. Even at her house during this time of recovery in between her chemo trips to the hospital, her family took extreme care of Kasey in having hand sanitizers around their house and signs telling visitors not to shake her hand out of fear of infection. And she couldn't attend classes at her school, play soccer or socialize with friends either. But at the same time, that tumor shrunk and the cancer did not spread as she would make enormous progress as her parents stayed positive.
Support for Kasey began to take shape thanks to social media platforms that spread the word around the world of her battle against cancer to those outside of her inner circle of family and friends. Cancer survivors, soccer teams, people in the San Diego community, celebrities and well-known athletes joined Team Kasey in pledging their support for her among those outside of her inner circle of family and friends: the great Cameron Diaz sent her a autographed letter with a message that read, "For Kasey #3 Staying Strong." Kylie and Kendall Kardashian sent Kasey signed pictures and a gift bag of their work, while FreeForm TV's Baby Daddy star Tahj Mowry visited her in the hospital during one of her chemo stays.
She met members of the hometown Chargers and was a special guest to a San Diego Padres game and met the team including Matt Kemp, plus got a shoutout on Facebook from the Warriors' Matt Barnes. And of course, she got love via mail from the greatest of all time in women's soccer, as Mia Hamm wrote to Kasey, "...soccer has been an important part of my life but my family and friends are what bring me the most joy. Promise me you'll keep enjoying all that life brings you. Keep up your positive attitude and positive spirit."
Six months into the chemotherapy process, Harvey had already garnered the support of everyone she had touched base with. But she had no idea that the biggest moment and the biggest supporter was still to come... one that would totally change her life.

When he spotted a photo of Kasey wearing his graphic t-shirt featuring that fruit on social media, Johnny Bananas instantly took notice and instantly sent her a signed picture and a package of his Bananas attire to wear, as he wrote in a letter to her, "...on those days that you need a little strength to push through! Your biggest fan, Bananas." He adds, "I was trying to reconcile with myself the best way going about doing this and, like divine intervention, Kasey came into my life. All of a sudden me this picture just popped up on my Twitter feed. Just the picture aloe -- before I even saw the caption -- was just like, 'Oh my god, this is incredible.' This young girl is wearing my shirt and just with the biggest smile and the happiest look on her face, and the sassiest pose with her hand on her oil I was like, 'I was like, 'This is it. Done.' She made the decision for me."
What Kasey didn't know was that he was thinking of a way to set aside time from not being busy training for a Challenge or traveling around the world to pay it forward and surprise her. On Memorial Day weekend last year while Kasey was into her sixth month of chemotherapy, Johnny came to the door of Kasey's house to surprise her with the Diem Strong Award from MedGift and giving her an $8,000 check, and then having a day of fitness training that more than made the world for her.
He told her at their workout, "I'll never forget the day you tweeted me that picture wearing my Johnny Bananas shirt. Because I've been wearing my shirts, I didn't know who I was gonna donate the money to... You showed up on my Twitter feed and before I read it, I was like, that's her."
She says, "I'm a big fan of Johnny's because he's amazing at Challenges, and just all around a good person. During my workout, it was really tough because I had just came out of one of my chemos and my dad told me if I did really good on this workout, he would buy me a Johnny Bananas shirt. I just expected him to favorite it or re-tweet it... I didn't expect him to reach out, and that was awesome. I am so relieved that this donation from all of these Diem shirts is really gonna help out family."
Both Johnny and Kasey agree that it was the greatest - if not one of the best - days of their lives, and he admits, "All the shows that I've done, I was more nervous showing up at this 13-year-old girl's front door. This girl is the embodiment of Diem Strong. It's like Diem 2.0. It's kind of like I'm getting another shot at trying to help out and lend a hand. Kasey's willingness to show herald to the world, exactly how she is, and allow the world to be there front and center -- that's impressive for anyone. And D was the same way."

Just a few months after meeting Bananas and creating an instant bond - which ended with the soccer tradition of both exchanging their shirts at day's end, Kasey would announce to the world that after 31 rounds of chemo, 33 radiations and a tedious 43-week process that she was cancer free. She wrote on Instagram after her last chemo in September 2015, "It's been an extremely rough, hard, and enduring 42 weeks, but I survived!!! With the help of family, friends, and #teamkaseyharvey I made it through. I've also met some incredible people along the way who I will never ever forget. Including a very special guy with an extremely big heart, he surprised me at my house and we spent the day together working out, thank you to the one and only @realjohnnybananas you have become one of my best friends, and you've changed my life forever. And your support for #childhoodcancerawereness is incredible, may not seem like a lot but it means the world to me!! And lastly I'd like to thank my family, friends, and AMAZING Team Kasey supporters. Your support has been so amazing and I couldn't of done it without your guys help!!!! NO MORE CHEMO FOR ME!!!! ❤️🎉💘😋"
This year as she returned to middle school as an 8th grader and later being promoted to high school, Kasey was honored by ACE Hardware as ACE Foundation's All-Star Ambassador and having her face being adorned on store displays across the country. She received congratulatory messages not only from Johnny, but also USWNT goalkeeper Hope Solo on the honor (Kasey also received signed balls and jerseys from her and Megan Rapinoe), which saw her go to Las Vegas to accept the award and then go on a national tour. As the foundation's representative for its national fundraising efforts for the Children's Miracle Network Hospital, she's been able to visit the network of hospitals to help improve the quality of medical treatment for kids and encouraging customers to donate to children's hospitals. Traveling across the country has taken her to Capitol Hill in Washington, Wrigley Field in Chicago when she went to the foundation's annual dinner, and to Houston to hang out with the horses. She even got to meet the co-host of last week's American Music Awards, Gigi Hadid.
During his past two Challenges, Bananas has acknowledged Kasey in wearing her name on his arm during an elimination battle on Bloodlines alongside cousin Vince, and then wearing her wristband on a Rivals III after show with the quote, "Losing is not an option." Inspired by seeing him win these Challenges, Kasey has added doing cross-country and Spartan Races to her athletic resume when not being on the pitch defending goal. She and Bananas have hung out a couple additional times since that life-changing day, including when she was training for her first race on the revered obstacle race series which echoes the epic final challenges we've seen Bananas win many times. She recently told San Diego Family Magazine that she has eyes on attending Harvard when the time to accept that high school diploma comes in four years' time and becoming a cardiovascular surgeon.
And just last week was the two-year anniversary of Kasey's cancer diagnosis, and there is no sign or trace of that cancer as it remains in remission. On Instagram, she reflected on the journey that she has endured from the depths of finding out about it, to where she is right now: "Today officially marks 2 years since the day I was diagnosed with cancer. It was the day I was told that I would have to endure a horrific battle unlike any other. Through my treatment for Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma I went to hell and back. But I survived. I survived because I fought the fight, and I won. I went through 42 rounds of chemotherapy and 38 rounds of radiation to get where I am today. But I sure as hell didn't win this battle alone, you simply cant beat cancer alone. And I will never ever forget the people that stood by my side during my battle, because without them...I honestly wouldn't be here. They would sit by my bedside while I got chemo, they would visit me when I was isolated at home, they would text me and make sure I was okay. Everyone from family, friends, celebrities who have become my friends, who stood by me, I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you for believing in me, and giving me the strength and the courage I needed to beat cancer. I did not do this alone, and I am forever grateful for that. November 16, of 2014 will forever be the day my life changed forever, but it will also forever be the day where I realized: "you can't keep on waiting because if you keep on waiting, it's gone." -Diem Brown. #survivor 💙🎗"

For Johnny Bananas, he has had an amazing run on MTV that has seen him rise to become one of its most-notable personalities: thirteen Challenges, six finals wins, $700,000+ in winnings, membership of reality TV's most-esteemed community and a personality all his own. After what many have seen as "the most ruthless move in reality TV history" this past summer, it would be easy for those who were once fans of his to turn their back on him. But after the passing two years ago of one of his best friends, Diem Brown's spirit has still driven him, and him having the chance to form a unique bond with one of his biggest fans does prove that there is still a soft side to him that explains that outside of The Challenge spotlight, he is an all-around good guy who still makes time to give back.
For Kasey Harvey, it's now been exactly 738 days since that November 17th day two years ago that changed her life: finding out the news of her being diagnosed with the rare form of cancer known as Rhabdomyosarcoma. Being a soccer goalkeeper, she was used to challenges coming her way, but none like what she endured in battling that disease that would've ended her life much too soon. But through the intense and hard process of chemotherapy that followed, she stayed positive with a smile, with heart and with the support of people from around the know she didn't know personally but thanks to social media immediately rallied behind her as part of Team Kasey as if they were her close friends. In the end, it would be all worth it, as she over a year cancer-free and living life to the fullest.
Johnny has formed bonds and made enemies with people both inside the MTV bubble and outside of it, too. Amidst this complicated and never dull world of the show many see as the greatest reality show on television, it's refreshing to know that the biggest fan of The Challenge's most well-known competitor is some who's been an inspiration to everyone in the two years since her cancer diagnosis and embodying that same "Never Give Up" spirit that they were inspired by the most inspiring person to this generation of Real World & Challenge viewers. This bond is Diem Strong.
