It might be a summer without a season of The Challenge airing this year, but after what we saw with Turbo being a deserved champion of War of the Worlds in a season of redemption of sorts, we can be comfortable a bit to take a few months off from the fifth major pro sport. But if you follow the broader world of MTV Reality, there's nothing to worry about: Real World on Facebook, the return of The Hills, Cheyenne & Cory's ride through parenthood on Teen Mom OG, and the Summer of Love in Ex On The Beach and Are You The One.
The last Challenge-less summer was four years ago in 2015, where the United States also won the Women's World Cup that year, where The Force Awakens ruled the box office and where collabs by Bruno Mars, Wiz Khalifa & Charlie Puth slayed the charts. But imagine being part of what would turn out to be a legendary MTV Reality cast in having to wait out an entire summer after filming a few months earlier only to wait for the fall to have it premiere. A person on this Ex On The Beach cast knows this very feeling so vividly as he returns to the beach and the world of romantic reality television this summer.
Of course, we're talking about Devin Walker, and his cast of Are You The One? Season 3, which was revealed to the world a month shy of four years ago this summer's weekend in August 2015, before that season debuted after a Teen Mom season finale and then moving to hump day. While the Season 1 cast has the ultimate Perfect Match, Season 5 with notable figures despite losing $800 grand, and Season 6 having representation on both last and this season's installments of EOTB, as well as a slew of notable castmates, it's the class of Season 3 that has, arguably, the biggest notoriety and staying power.
Which class of lovebirds can say that that they have appeared on every single Challenge season since they debuted on the first season they were eligible for? Who can say that they've had the chance to cross over into not just that show, but also Real World, TMOG and EOTB? And who can lay claim to being the first alum of this show to win a Challenge final, despite their partner's actions?
As we saw last week, Hunter has made a name for himself in winning that second mission with Ashley, them earning a spot in the Oasis and getting the wrath of Cory after winning. As we told you in our Who Are These Newbies? intro to him, he is playing this game not necessarily for himself, but to make a lasting impression on those less fortunate in using any money he wins to invest in a gym for those with special needs in the same Florida community where he volunteers as much time as he can.
However, Hunter's most memorable moment until last week was what happened in week 3 in the AYTO Season 3 house - a week after their infamous blackout. After that week's challenge, the guys treated the living room as their own strip club as the girls of the house enjoyed the moves of the guys in their boxers. This was the result of a bet they made that if the girls got more lights than the guys in their first two matchups they would have a night of entertainment, shall we say. Of course, Mike of that season and the ensuing Real World Bad Blood season was a stripper when we first met him in the Islands two years ago.
There, Hunter went to the closet to look at himself, and thought of what he could do to get the girls' attention. He decided to stuff a sock in his boxers and then went around the house trying to convince the girls that his package is actually larger than it actually is. Almost immediately, he got caught... and one of them who felt skeptical was Cheyenne: "I feel so bad about Hunter because I really feel like he needs to go home and get some help. There's no reason why you should ever put a sock in your boxers and walk around like you got four d.... inside there. It's weird."
The next day, Hannah joined in on the package situation: "Dude, you put a sock in your junk to make it look bigger. Don't try and lie...we all figured you out." And with her, Stacey, Chelsey, Rashida and Cheyenne watching from their beds, Hunter put something inside his boxers that was blocked out by the folks in the censor department but nonetheless shocked those girls watching, with Stacey saying "Hunter got a big one." All Rashida would respond to that was, "Hold on baby, you might be my match (laughs)." And Cheyenne added, "I really wanted you to have this itty bitty turtle d.... It was oddly big."
When everyone got watch that moment on TV, it was no surprise that this moment grabbed the attention of Hunter's own family. His mom left this voicemail after the episode aired, for which you can check out the video on MTV's YouTube channel.
"Hey Hunter, it's mom. Oh my, oh my. Hunter Brian Barfield, what are you thinking? Showing your package to all those girls on national television. If I could come to (inaudible), I would choke the s... out of you right now. Oh my god, when I saw you walk into the kitchen and the girls were talking about a sock in your boxers, I almost died. I almost died because obviously I'm your mother and I know that you're not putting a sock in your bottoms. I know that that's the real you. I was just shocked that the girls were just questioning that. Did you have to take it that far to prove to them that there was actually not a sock in your boxers? Oh my god, your Nana and Papa are watching. What are you thinking, son? You know how your Nana and Papa are. Maybe I should warn them. I need a drink right now. You need to call me back. I love you...call me."
When he heard that message, all Hunter could say via Skype was, "I was not expecting this. So awkward. Well mom, I'm sorry that you had to see that. From watching that, you knew I didn't stuff it or anything. And the girls, you know, I felt they were challenging me. So at that point, I had to prove a point. To my Nana and Papa, during this part of the episode we're gonna have you guys change the channel. Obviously, you guys know how I am to be. But, just change the channel during the portion of the episode."
After what we saw this week, a lot of fans seem to be in agreement that the two teams who got Purged and sent home on The Challenge Final Reckoning didn't have a fair chance at this game... most especially the one rookie out of the four. And as this post goes to print this Saturday, he happens to be part of a select group of those in community of The Challenge, Are You The One and MTV Reality to celebrate their birthday to begin the month of August, as does the channel itself.
He may not have had a fair shake in getting a chance to compete, no less be part of the first month's drama with his ex which has dominated the first month of this season when everyone has been up in arms on the focus on Real World-like drama when they're there for the action. But we're sure that Chuck should get another opportunity to compete on a Challenge, the seventh member of the now-lauded Are You The One Season 3 cast to appear here after their stint on the love fest. But this stay to South Africa that amounted merely to just a business trip would not have been possible had he not been in something that wasn't even mentioned at all on-air.
A year ago while going on a cliff diving trip along the Chatahoochee River in the outskirts of North Georgia, Chuck had a painful accident when he fell awkwardly on one of his feet when landing in a shallow part of the water below. Half of his feel was sliced off, and was hospitalized for a week with multiple bacterial infections and the fear that his foot would be amputated. But not only did he survive that ordeal, his foot healed enough to not have that foot be lost and would've robbed him of any chance of competing on a Challenge if it was offered to him one day.
In this new age of the show, a lot of Challengers these days love to party, advertise new products on Instagram and engage in Twitter warfare with fellow cast members for everyone to see with the hope they get paired on a future season. But there are those, in what we call the Trifecta on here, who don't make being on MTV their whole lives, who is not fully engaged in these shows all the time, and have jobs and hobbies to fall back on to prove the point that, they are real & genuine people like us.
Chuck is one of them, and before he made it to AYTO three years ago, he became a series first. He's the only cast member to have the luxury of not having to make a long plane flight to the house as one who lived not far from the singles mansion when Season 3 invaded his Hawaiian backyard in 2015. You might remember him more for his relationship with Britni, but he also formed the duo of Chuck & Big D with Devin in the confessional playing the ukulele, was one of the many guys who stood next to Kiki in the Truth Booth... and there are those tattoos.
But how many people in the MTV community can say that they love the sea so much that they have a job working at an aquarium? He was a Hawaiian scuba diver before he made his way here, and when he moved to Georgia during that ill-fated romance, he took up a gig with the Georgia Aquarium in downtown Atlanta. When it opened, it was the world's largest zoo for our friends in the ocean with over 100,000 sea animals, and continues to draw a million visitors each year to its prime location near Centennial Olympic Park and the World of Coca-Cola museum.
For the handful of you who might have an appetite for programming that features animal discovery or life in the ocean, it's likely you've watched Nature or NOVA on PBS, those National Geographic Specials or searched on YouTube to watch those old underwater specials hosted by the late Jacques Cousteau. Besides pictures of him & his new girl, his brothers and the time heavyweight champ Evander Holyfield photobombed a selfie pic, Chuck's Instagram channel frequently features him in his natural habitat of the ocean and the aquarium.

A difference between the main Challenge house and the Redemption house is that there's plenty of time for occupants of the small retreat to just relax and go sight-seeing just as it was both last season and in early, old-school seasons of years gone by. And after what went down in Armageddon, Chuck had the opportunity to go in a cage and get up close to a shark. He posted this Instagram video during Discovery Channel's annual Shark Week festivities and captioned below, "I celebrated early in South Africa when I got to cage dive with Great Whites. Bucket list experience ✔️🦈"
As it still airing in some parts of the world after it concluded a couple weeks ago for most, there's still buzz about the finale to Season 3 of Are You The One?. And a key storyline on what was the most controversial of the show's three seasons was the relationship of Amanda & Mike, which started on the premiere and reached its breaking point in the two-hour finale. They got it on in the Boom Boom Room at the get-go, was a no-match in the week 2 blackout (where the cast lost $250,000 from their $1 million) and stayed together afterwards which, along Devin & Kiki and other no-matches, threatened the group's chances at the $750,000 which they won miraculously. And in the finale, a fight between the two led to a drunken Amanda going off on him and Mike responding by becoming violent. Ultimately, he left the house, both after the fight to cool off at a hotel by producers and then deciding to do so permanently citing the difficulties of living in that house in Hawaii.
Last month, we featured the man who singlehandedly pulled off a true underdog tale: Devin relying on solo cups and a quarter to help his AYTO Season 3 castmates go from 2 lights in their ninth try to 10 in the last one as they won $750,000 two years ago. There, Big D joined Canadian filmmaker and fresh-faced funny man Zak as they prank-called fellow AYTO alumni in offering them spots on the casts of phony reality series, just after his first early elimination after cashing in his first three shows. Now, another member of that Miracle in the Islands cast has made another splash... this time quite literally, and with one of music's biggest stars, who tomorrow turns 25 years old and is marking his birthday weekend with dropping new music.
A decade ago, the buzz of the pop music scene were The Jonas Brothers: siblings Nick, Joe and Kevin started their music career in a local play in New Jersey, which attracted record executives to them and Nick's prior solo work when he was 12. That led the boys to tours in 2005 with Kelly Clarkson, the Backstreet Boys and Jesse McCartney as they began to make their way into the music business, and led them to stardom among the Disney crowd. With two top-rated Disney Channel shows and the telefilm Camp Rock, the guys scored top-five albums and legions of fans.
After a hiatus and a failed comeback attempt, the guys went their separate ways, and for Joe - it saw him form the pop band DNCE and scoring success with the catchy top-10 single "Cake by the Ocean" and collaborations with Nicki Minaj and recently with Sir Rod Stewart at the VMA's a few weeks ago. For Nick, he returned to doing some theater work, roles on the Broadway-themed TV series Smash, Hawaii Five-O, Kingdom and a couple movies; and was the creative and musical director on Demi Lovato's 2014 Neon Lights Tour before music came calling again.
His self-titled second solo album and first on a major label earned him a Billboard top ten and two top-20 singles, and it also introduced the world to a new Nick Jonas: gone was that squeaky-clean Disney image and in came the persona of being a sex symbol, perhaps tamer than that of another Disney alum in Miley Cyrus. To add to this, he also had a recurring role on FOX's Scream Queens and was part of Christina Aguilera's team of mentors on the eighth season of The Voice as he prepped for his third album, which has only added to Nick's superstar status in the music world: another top 10 album in Last Year Was Complicated, another top-20 single in "Close" with Tove Lo, performing on the 2016 VMA's in New York, and a starring role alongside James Franco in Goat... and also, getting to do a rap battle with someone who's the latest to align with Team Jailah, Kevin Hart.
Earlier this summer, Nick debuted new music in "Remember I Told You" featuring Anne-Marie and Mike Posner, who got to hang out with Brandon from AYTO Season 2 just after he returned from filming that season in Puerto Rico. That was a harbinger of what was to come, where this week as he turns 25, the stud announced a new album to come this fall, and a new single "Find You" which debuted on Apple Music's Beats 1. And that's where we find the link between him and AYTO.
One of those who we saw head to Hawaii almost exactly two years ago this month was Hannah Rathbun, a Syracuse native who's, as her bio stated, "funny, sweet, beautiful, and loves to swim with sharks, literally." What brought her to AYTO was a dating history that saw her ex cheat on her and putting the feelings of everyone else ahead of her own. Early on, she was attracted to Mr. Merman himself, Chuck, but after that early and money-losing blackout in week 2 she would eventually make her move on Zak. And as it turned out, though they were not one of those ten matches by the time Devin reached into his top hat and made that record 8-light jump to destiny, the Canadian and the Upstate New Yorker would leave Hawaii together. And two years later, they are still together as other AYTO couples have faltered after leaving the house.
Over the summer, Hannah was asked by Nick Jonas to make a cameo in that music video for "Find You" where in one of the scenes of the clip that will premiere on Monday, she appears underwater with Nick and almost gets very close to actually cheating on Zak. We'll find out about that when that drops at the beginning of this coming week, just two days before the journey begins for the Season 6 cast in New Orleans.
Since this was first posted on Sept. 15, there is actually more to Hannah's fandom for the Jonas Brothers: when she was 16, she and her sister went to a Jonas Brothers concert in Syracuse, NY and shared the following Instagram photo below of a screencap from the "Find You" video and her taking a picture with Nick, Joe and Kevin just a couple days after the pair's second meeting was released on all of Nick's social media accounts, VEVO and YouTube.
She captioned to the photo that has since been deleted, "So @nickjonas & I have come a long way since we were 16 🤷🏼♀️ I had so much fun shooting this & swimmin w you guys @loveebonique @espritcasting ✨check out my full 16 yr old Jonas Brothers fan glory 🙆🏼"

As those of you fans probably know, AYTO Season 1 aired in that coveted 11PM slot of following Teen Mom 2, and it along with Catfish can thank one of MTV's two most-publicized foursomes for giving them the huge ratings bump and big buzz that saw succeeding seasons air one hour earlier. As mentioned here before, I began watching TM back in March when the OG original girls made their MTV return, influenced mainly by the additions of new kids to my inner circle in the course of the past 7 years - three of them this year alone, as well as provide some insight into that ultimate life challenge of raising a kid amidst the soap opera lives of the franchise's two casts. Obviously, me and some of the MTV Trifecta family can relate to them in going through this life-changing phase right now.
Of course, Jemmye is the Trifecta's biggest TM fan with her always hilarious and honest live tweets which are a must for fans of the show. Besides that, the TM girls and their inner circles have support for Team MTV: Kailyn Lowry & husband Javi showing support for Jem and fellow Challenge vet Nany wanting to spend time with their adorable son Isaac; back-from-rehab Leah Messer being friends with fellow WV'ers of the Buckwild bunch with one of them, Katie, being at next week's reunion; and Adam from Real World Back to Vegas hanging out with the ex of OG Amber Portwood, Gary Shirley. Adam also became friends with fellow OG Maci Bookout some time back (both her and Gary wore his clothing line on the show), and that's where this latest story of being part of this small world of Team MTV takes us to.
As documented during the early part of their MTV stint, Maci had a relationship with boyfriend and later fiance Ryan Edwards until that all came crashing down. Along with having to share joint custody of adorable son Bentley, after the split Ryan began looking to rebound with other girls, and one of them is on this AYTO Season 3 cast. Proof came in this tweet he sent out to one of the castmates: "@KikiMTV now that you think your famous tell ppl I wasn't your bf....thanks!" Per a story from The Ashley's Reality Roundup, Kiki dated Ryan back in 2013 while production of the original Teen Mom was on hiatus due to Amber's jail sentence. He dated her after breaking up with on-air girlfriend Dalis and before he shacked up with current girlfriend Shelby. The story is that after they met Bentley in his native Tennessee, Ryan would ditch Kiki for a weekend and she was forced to have a spend it with his parents, and that heartbreak eventually saw them head down to Splitsville, and leading her to look for a second chance at love, this time with MTV cameras in tow.

But then again, it isn't just Ryan that Kiki has been spotted with a member of Team MTV before making her way to our screens. As we told you in our AYTO 3 preview last month after the buzz for the season began, she has been longtime friends with Adam from Season 1 (and for you Challenge fans, Exes 2 with his ex Brittany) going back to when they were in school together in Virginia; that's the picture right there with him at her viewing party back on Thursday, per Adam's Twitter hub. It was one of many viewing parties held around the AYTO family: the show's first couple and Adam's fellow castmates, Amber & Ethan, hosted her fellow Texan Nelson down in Austin, TX; while three-fourths of the Goon Squad - Briana, Jessica and Ellie hosted Zak, Austin and others down in SoCal when they welcomed them to Team MTV officially. That only adds to the number of AYTO castmates, both from Season 2 and the preceding and succeeding seasons who've hung out with them and Christina in what is the show's most-popular friendship.
It's the first weekend of November and the kickoff to DC BDAY Week here across the DC Social Network. And to kick it all off, we have a special mega-edition of DC SocialPulse and a double feature of sorts. It's not the Double Shot Tuesday's we had earlier this year, but we nonetheless have a Trifecta doubleheader as we cover both this week's episode of Are You The One? and the launch of The Challenge: Battle of the Bloodlines.
Last week on the Big Island of Hawaii, we saw a wild luau see Chuck once again get caught in the act and frustrating poor Kiki, while Devin loses his cool and frustration grows on the part of the cast as they pursued strategy with little coming out of it. This week, the key figure of this season decides to once again make a play for the girl he's been seeing all along, while jealousy causes temper to flare once again. We also head to the countryside, while the house tries to find new romantic connections as they seek to do everything they can to reverse the momentum in their quest for the cash.
Then, we proceed to our second main event: the launch of Challenge: Bloodlines as the family members of the castmates are revealed for the first time and all the related material that goes along with it. There's sure to be plenty of drama with what's essentially the third batch of Fresh Meat but a group who will sure to stir the pot more than in any other Challenge season in recent memory.
We'll have the interaction surrounding both this week's AYTO and Bloodlines covered here, plus you'll see how Team MTV got to celebrate Halloween (including those outside the Trifecta and pictures are linked here) and how those with ties to both Kansas City and New York saw the Royals' World Series win as well.
