Welcome once again to DC SocialPulse and to our first episode diary for season 2 of Are You The One?. Last week, we saluted the AYTO season 1 cast as they got together one more time in L.A. to celebrate the forthcoming addition to their dysfunctional but great family as perfect match and soon-to-be-married couple Ethan & Amber found out that they will have a new baby girl. But there was also plenty of drama too: Chris T. and Shanley's awkward conversation after their bad breakup, Simone's beef with the first couple, Adam & Ryan's bromance going by the wayside and Brittany being involved too, Jacy's move to be closer to Scali, and JJ roasting the cast.

   This week sees the official beginning of the sequel as season 2 of Are You The One? gets underway with 20 new girls and guys coming to Puerto Rico looking for true love, their perfect match and a shot at $1 million. Well, check that...make that 21 new girls and guys, as a new twist of an 11th girl to the mix will make things very much more interesting to say the least. It's déjà vu all over again as a new couple clicks right off the bat, but will they be the ones be picked to go to the truth booth like Chris T. & Shanley last season? Plus, there's an icy first challenge, a broken nose and all the usual excitement surrounding the first days in an MTV house.

From the moment Adam, Amber, Ashleigh, Brittany, Chris T, Coleysia, Dillan, Dre, Ethan, Jacy, Jessica, Joey, John, Kayla, Paige, Ryan, Scali, Shanley, Simone & Wes struck gold last spring, we all knew how high they set the bar for season 2 by the time we came to the first episode of the sequel on Monday. Obviously, the series kept the formula that made season 1 a smash hit in casting 10 guys & 10 girls in a house in Puerto Rico, watch what happens among them and see if they can get together with their perfect matches. But after the dream team made relatively easy work of their mission in Hawaii, they took a cue from their Challenge counterparts by making the road to the million that more tougher by incorporating a twist into the game by adding an 11th girl to the house in Christina, and also that one of the guys has a double match. While the guys dig the extra girl, the girls weren't feeling the addition of Team Eleven, and they tell her "We'll love you, but right now we hate you."
   When they start mingling and enjoying a few cold ones, Ellie (with the southern accent) tells the girls that she brought some sex toys along to the house. Anthony from Chicago boasts about his package and how he's a player, while nightclub worker Paris is trying to avoid douchey guys. For fellow San Diegoans Briana & Curtis, they hit it off right off the bat with plenty of laughs & flirting and calls him "attractive." Then, she gets involved in the first significant event in the house when John, the Jim Parsons-lookalike law student, steps over Briana on the bed and his knee accidentally hits and fractures her nose, which leads to blood streaming all over the floor. One of the girls tells Bri that she should go to the hospital, which leave both her and him with a lot of concern. Poor Bri.
   During my first summer in the twitter-world two years ago, a story from the Virgin Islands was that of one of the three couples paired up in the Real World house, Marie and Robb, who also happen to have common tattoos (the words "Hakuna Matata"). For another couple that clicked off the bat, Christina showed Vegas fun guy Brandon a hip tattoo she got when she met her dad for the first time. She talked to him about people getting on her for looking for the right person to be with. Brandon reveals that he has a tattoo similar to her's...déjà vu once again as we have a pair in an MTV house with matching tattoos, all the while enjoying themselves in the pool.
   But even with all those pairs enjoying and flirting in the first day & night in Puerto Rico, they're not the first ones to hook up in the house. That title belongs to the Brazilian from New York City who might've gotten some advice from friend Jay of Real World Ex-Plosion on how to handle being on an MTV show before taking off for PR. Jessica has her sights on hooking up with guys in the house, and when she and Anthony headed into Poundtown (aka the Boom Boom Room), they become the first pair to hook up. The morning after, she immediately regrets it to Ellie. Just a fun-filled first day and night of triumphs, tragedies and all the excitement of a first day.
   As Briana is still in the hospital (and didn't come back until later in the day), the first getaway challenge sees everyone participate and partner up as if we were in Hawaii and the 11th girl twist wasn't in play. The last challenge last season saw the guys try to figure out which girl is rubbing their feet; the first one this time around also involves laying on your stomach. But this time, it's an icy one too: ten blocks of ice, with a key embedded inside that also contains a code to unlock a box. In order to get there, the couples must melt the blocks with their bodies in the fastest time. In the end, Layton (former Ole Miss TE) & Alexandria take 1st place, followed by Brandon & Jessica in 2nd and Pratt & Paris taking 3rd. Their reward for reaching the podium: a private plane ride to one of the world's most beautiful beaches on the island of Culebra - located in between the Puerto Rican mainland and St. Thomas.
   The thing that got everyone talking was what happened with Pratt and Paris, and whether we could be heading down that road once again. Back on Jan. 21, we saw Chris T. and Shanley instantly click right in the get-go and even after they weren't a match in the very first truth booth never let go. This time, Paris feels Pratt is her match, but she also wants to spend more time in the house. As share a smooth in the confessional, they come up with a plan to try to outsmart the system by trying to avoid being sent into the truth booth and swaying the house to vote for another couple. They decided to hide their interest in each other and stay together as long as possible by convincing the house that they're not a match and that they simply don't like each other. Paris began this plot by acting that she doesn't like Pratt in claiming they don't get along because of religious beliefs. They then mock everyone for not seeing that they're into one another, with Pratt coming up with the line of the night, "You're like the Helen Keller of Are You The One."
   When the couples went on their date, Brandon and Jessica find not much interest in each other, so he lets Jess go for Layton. And she holds back on kissing him due to her first night shenanigans. It's also in Culebra that the first accusations of Pratt & Paris faking it to the house started to surface when Brandon tells Jess, "Look at 'em. They're probably talking...about us right now," and her responding, "I don't care." Jess feels it's unbelievable that right out of the starting gate, there's douchebags in the house. My colleague Andrew Kirk, and others on the cast & fans on twitter, questioned whether or not if we're going through the Chanley thing all over again. When word of that got to everyone on our screens, obviously nobody became fans of that strategy.
   When everyone gathers in the living room with host Ryan Devlin for the first truth booth, that's when word finally got to the rest of the group of what Brandon & Jess figured in that Pratt & Paris were tricking the group. Briana is the first to put P&P on blast, and the pair confess how they feel about each other, and Curtis best described this betrayal as a "salty f**king move." Pratt feels he's not ready yet to go to the truth booth early on and find out if they are a match or not. The other housemates chime in and raise their voice at them, mostly directed to him, about how they can't play this game if couples keep on keeping secrets and also that Pratt is not the only one who's in love since everyone's there for the same thing too. Now they've got a target on their backs.
   For the first truth booth, everyone at home thought Pratt & Paris would be given that first trip, and this would've been a carbon copy of what we had the first time out. Instead, P&P's scheme worked and the house votes reveal that the first couple to go in is Brandon & Jessica, but they hope that they aren't the first to head to the Honeymoon Suite, and Brandon adds, "I don't even like fake boobs, I like real boobs." One who prayed for them to be a no match was Christina because of him & her's strong attraction. When the words "no match" came up, all three become very ecstatic and upon returning to the living room, Brandon & Christina share a very good kiss while Jessica hopes Layton is the one. This first truth booth, a total difference from what happened in Hawaii: sighs of relief instead of jaws dropping. By the way, thanks for the follow Brandon, hope we get to meet up in Vegas.
   And at the first match-up ceremony, we find that, because of the 11th girl, one of the girls will be left on the sidelines. Layton, as winner of the first challenge, gets first dibs on picking which girl, and after hearing from both Jenni and Jess, he goes with Jenni. This comes after he talked to her about how Jess is into him and though Jess might be attracted to him, Jenni could be someone he could see being "Mrs. Jones." Jess becomes upset when Jenn calls him her "prince charming" and needs her to back off. That, everyone, could be the first of many love triangles we could have in PR. Elsewhere, Dario goes with Ashley; Pratt with Paris, Curtis/Briana, John/Jasmine, Brandon/Christina, Garland/Alexandria, Anthony/Jessica, Nate/Shelby and Alex/Ellie; Tyler is left out. And if the footage is any indication, lots of girl/guy competition could be on our hands.
   As it was in season 1, Team 21 in Puerto Rico begins their quest for the cast with getting only two perfect matches in their first match-up. R-Dev obviously scolded them for the poor results, but for me I'm not surprised since I expected a low number for this first go. It's just the beginning - only the first try of ten, and there's no need to panic right now. The group still has plenty of time now until then to get to know each other and gel, try and make things work, and ultimately come together.

WELCOME TO TEAM MTV: SLEDNECKS

From a show premiering on the first Monday of October, we end by looking at another which debuts before the end of the month and the night before all the trick or treat madness of Halloween. Are You The One isn't the only MTV show I'm anxiously looking forward to watching this month. In our VMA SocialPulse, we announced the latest addition to my watching/live tweet rotation of the Alaskan-based docu-comedy Slednecks. If you're someone who prefers the kind of reality TV of the fun variety like Buckwild, Jersey Shore or Party Down South, you'll likely be in good company this fall & winter with our friends in the 49th state. And for an MTV fan used to more of the storytelling and competition type, I'll finally have a chance to let loose a little and have ample opportunities to enjoy some laughs. 

   Last Thursday, the buzz for Slednecks officially got underway as the cast was revealed and a new trailer was released. And on Halloween Eve, Jackie, Trevor, Kelly, Sierra, Amber, Zeke, Tosca, Dylan, Big Mike, Hali & Samantha will take over the same Thursday 10PM slot currently occupied by Rob Dyrdek's Ridiculousness and once owned by Snooki & the Sitch. Here's my chat with some of them, as well as chats between them and other MTV family.

It isn't just me who's looking forward to having lots of fun with our friends in The Last Frontier, it's also caught the attention of two members of Team MTV. As you saw above, Briana has already become long-distance friends with the girls in the rural Anchorage suburb of Wasilla, while Ellie has also taken notice of Slednecks as well. And the guy who sleeps every night next to J-Woww, Roger Mathews, has also tweeted his anticipation for a show that promises to bring on the fun, this time in the snow of wintertime rather than on the beach in summertime.

   As mentioned before, we'll be previewing Slednecks in our next edition of The Look later this month, along with looking back at Buckwild. The only season of that show will also be the focus of DCNOW Retro Night as all this month, my live tweet handle @DC408DxNow will have retro live tweeting of that entire season. That means I'll be heading back to West Virginia to rekindle my friendship with Shae, Katie, Anna, Ashley, Cara, Tyler, Joey, Shain & Salwa, who just recently was released from jail. A primer on the state of Alaska is also forthcoming as well.
