On February 7th - two nights after we determine an NFL champion in Houston and nine days from now, halfway around the world a new season of The Challenge will commence. If what happened the last time out on the eve of the Rio Olympics last summer is indicative of why this show is as well-regarded and loved as it is, than we should be in for something good when Season 29 takes to our screens. This time, we are in for something uniquely different.
For the second time in this current generation of this show dating back to 2010, it's an individual game with no teammates to worry about as competitors will have no one to answer but themselves. Here, it's a cast full of first-time competitors, those who have made a name for themselves in recent years, and one who's returned after a decade's absence to give it a go yet again. But eventually, all eyes will turn to the big twist that's looming ahead of eight past champions coming in like a tsunami to wreck havoc on this group of underdogs, who all stand in their way towards a first Challenge win.
As always, we can expect everything we come to expect from this show, and then some: epic challenges, stunning eliminations, new rivalries being formed. shocking romances, scandalous hook-ups, drama that will make your jaw drop, and of course the unforeseen returns of the champions. And when those final few players are left, this will all lead up to The Challenge's very first three-day final that will determine who will walk off with the lions' share of the $350,000 in prize money.
For this, our sweet sixteenth season of the MTV Trifecta that we have has chronicled wire to wire on this site, DCBLOG will be surrounding it all like no other site out there in the blogosphere, taking you again from this series of preseason posts all the way through to the final in a few months from now, all with our unique look and stamp on all that's going on. This season is very much anticipated for a number of reasons, and because of all of this DCBLOG will actually split our preseason coverage into three posts spread over the next nine days.

THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS
First things first: we begin, in usual DCBLOG fashion, with a signature part of our Trifecta coverage. We are the only place anywhere for the buzz from social land of the casts as they watch the episodes through the Twitter sphere. WHAT TO EXPECT
For this Challenge, Invasion will begin along the lines of what we have seen as of late on the Real World, and will also provide a twist of sorts on the Cutthroat season of seven years ago over in Prague. And in a way, this will harken me back to when I got my start watching and following this show when Battle of the Seasons II introduced me to what this is all about - which eventually led me this thing I now call the MTV Trifecta.Here, eighteen Underdogs will arrive in Thailand seeking to notch their first Challenge win will be putted against one another in the quest to crown a new champion. Their first task will come in finding out that they will be competing on their own in the various missions (yes, I still prefer to call them that to not confuse everyone with the show's title) and against each other to earn their way out of "The Shelter," the back to basics accommodations where those who could be eliminated will find themselves in before their moment of truth. Those who do emerge out of the elimination chamber will find themselves in the main Challenge house, which this season is called "The Oasis" - fitting for a place that has that lap of luxury we all dream about.
Eventually the eighteen newbies will earn their way to that Oasis and they think that this will be smooth sailing in this posh environment. Of course, this won't last as long as a surprise visit from eight past Challenge champions will come at that point and, as Sarah would like to say, the game will no doubt change. Ultimately, the attention will turn to the first-ever three-day Challenge final once the final few competitors are left once springtime arrives, and all eyes will be on who will emerge out on top.
MEET THE CAST
In between, we have eight champions with sixteen titles to their credit, eight rookies competing on a Challenge for the first time, members of eight different Real World seasons, two AYTO seasons and a Fresh Meat season; and seven having competed in the last individual-based season, Free Agents in 2014. We begin our look with the Underdogs.
►THE UNDERDOGS
● AMANDA / Underdog (Are You The One? Season 3)
Feisty as a firecracker, Amanda came roaring into the Challenge house last season on Rivals III as a replacement and made quite a name for herself there. The AYTO alum had several clashes with Camila, and now this pop-off queen is back and determined to add more to her resume. If you think that she's tough on the outside, Amanda has a heart of gold on the inside, and also has someone on her mind: her dad has been in poor health as of late and would like nothing more than to achieve a place in the final and help her family in this time of need. Now all she needs to keep her head in the game and cool off somewhat, and she can give her dad something to cheer about.
● ANIKA / Underdog (Real World Bad Blood)
Okay, so we didn't see much of her on her Real World, but Anika does come straight off the plane from Seattle with much to prove, despite being a pint-sized powerhouse at a mere 5'3". She might be looked at as fragile, but she's not one who can be underestimated and this New Yorker (and soon to be, talk show host) hopes her determination and effervescent personality will shine in Thailand. She feels that she's a fighter on the inside and there is more to her than the princess persona her family sees her as. If what we've seen in recent seasons are any indication, Anika might be the latest one to take that Cinderella ride to the final, all cool and calm.
● ANTHONY / Underdog (Are You The One? Season 2)
Someone who became a key name on his original AYTO season three years ago was Anthony. The Chicagoan claims to have hooked up with nine of the eleven girls in the house, but in the end it was his calmness and penchant for math and strategy that made the difference in his cast walking away $1 million richer. Here, the party animal plans to do more than enjoy his time here: since returning from the Caribbean he incurred college debt and has lived with his parents. He says, "Winning is the goal and anything short of that is a disappointment in my eyes." Ant has a mission to make it all the way to the final and hope love doesn't get in the way of things... but you never know, of course.
● ASHLEY M. / Underdog (Real World Ex-Plosion)
At first look, you'll think Ashley is that boy-crazy party-girl who made everyone cringe on RW Ex-Plosion, but she made a strong impression in her maiden Challenge last summer, and proved there's fight inside her model personality. On Rivals III, a hunky hottie got on her head and affected her game, and coming off a devastating loss there she returns with a vengeance. Ashley says that she's grown up for the "Smashley" we saw in San Francisco and has since moved to Las Vegas to not only pursue more modeling opportunities but also a new life with her sister, and has her eyes set on going all the way to the top. Will someone get in the way of that dream here in Asia?
● BRUNO / Underdog (Real World Skeletons)
Two years ago at this time, Bruno had to confront his demons on Real World Skeletons, but now he heads to his first Challenge with much to prove. He has had a rough time since returning to Rhode Island from Chicago, having spent some time homeless and living out of his car. That ordeal, along with the car accident that nearly killed him, has made him more driven to win money and finally give him something to cheer about. He says, "A true fighter is somebody who will not let something hold them down. I've beat the odds every time." Bruno feels determined to leave the past in his rear view mirror and make the big fight to make it to the top. It'll be a great thing if he does.
● CORY / Underdog (Real World Ex-Plosion)
As a personal trainer, it's no surprise Cory has emerged as one to watch since making it to the final on his first Challenge ten months ago. But after a shock elimination loss on Rivals III, vindication is on his mind and has eyes set on going all the way once again. But usually a girl will get in the way of things wherever he goes, but Cory feels insistent on making sure that his sexual side won't get in the way of his competitiveness to go all the way to the W. As this is an individual game, Cory says, "This is the most important Challenge to me. I didn't come here for a girl, I came her to prove to myself I can get this win." With revenge, girls and all else in the house, it may distract him from that goal.
● DARIO / Underdog (Are You The One? Season 2)
Also on his third Challenge is suave Dario: after making it to Argentina but falling short of the Rivals III final, he's back and has more at stake in his life. He recently moved out to L.A. to pursue a career in real estate and is learning what it's like to start at the bottom, having to sleep on a sofa at friends' couches instead of living the glamorous life. Dario's come to Asia to win, and with no worries for what a partner might do to him he can no compete on his own. With a history of being that bad boy, perhaps he may be forced to choose a side and leave behind his middle of the road mentality. If he does make that move, will it pay off? Things will tell, of course.
● HUNTER / Underdog (Are You The One? Season 3)
We first saw handsome Southern stud Hunter on AYTO Season 3 more than a year ago and he makes the cross into Challenge world with guns blazing. With a muscular physique, he's no doubt someone to keep an eye for, but despite being buff on the outside, on the inside he has a gentle soul. So much so, that if Hunter makes it to the final he can then help to open a new gym for people with special needs, and also volunteers to help those people at home in Florida. There's also the issue of the women in the Challenge house, and the last time we saw him he famously tried to prove to the girls that his package is big. Nonetheless, we're looking forward to him bringing it on in Thailand.
● JENNA / Underdog (Real World Ex-Plosion)
For this, her 4th Challenge, three times Jenna has come in as an underdog and three times she's defied expectations to make it to three finals. This time, she comes in still reeling from her breakup with her ex Zach, and as she comes in single for the first time since high school she's eyeing on her first finals win. She adds, "I need to be really strong for myself and it's important for me to finally win a Challenge." Taking a break from working as a nanny around her modeling career, Jenna has her eyes on getting a new house for herself should she cash in again. However, Barbie Beast may have her hands full if someone on this cast becomes friends with her in the house. Stay tuned.
● KAILAH / Underdog (Real World Go Big or Go Home)
Kailah is carefree and living life in Florida where the fast-paced lifestyle is just a way of life in the sun. As she goes on her first Challenge, she is here for the thrills that come with being on this show, and she's ready to see what it take for her. It's living in the fast lane that comes with a cost, and if she wins she'll be eager to pay her college loans, helping her parents out and find time to go backpacking. However, with her Real World experience having lived with two other girls who got into a catfight in Vegas, it might be no surprise if her fiesty "devil may care" persona will net her the title of the one you love to hate in the house... good thing one of her friends is pop sirens Halsey.
● LaTOYA / Underdog (Real World St. Thomas)
For our next two competitors, five years ago they embraced our screens for the first time, and now they return. LaToya competed on her first Challenge - Free Agents three years ago, made a name for herself knocking off finalist Jemmye, and remembers of that time, "I was a complete spitfire. I didn't hold my tongue, and I was a target off the bat." She comes here looking again to stay under the radar and come here just to compete adding, "This time, I'm here for the money." However in this house full of great personalities, there might be a guy who could foil those best laid plans. Nonetheless, with eyes on launching a pet boutique site, she's looking to again excel in her second Challenge.
● MARIE / Underdog (Real World St. Thomas)
Also coming for her second Challenge is the other half of St. Thomas "T & 'Ri." We first saw Marie on Real World St. Thomas, and then flew out to Turkey for Battle of the Seasons II where she was annihilating her adversaries on the top of a flower pot and in the sun of Turkey. This time, this Staten Islander turned Manhattan mogul returns with a tactical business brain: "I'm Marie 2.0. I'm older. I'm wiser. I'm ready to do this Challenge for myself and by myself." As we all remember, on Hassel Island she fell in love with a tall ginger man and there could be someone on this house who could have eyes on 'Ri. Stay tuned to see what might happen in her return.
● NELSON / Underdog (Are You The One? Season 3)
Last season, we saw Nelson arrive on Rivals III as a replacement and he was in and out in a short time. This Texan is tough as nails and ready to run to the top, and considering how he's grown from tough times in poverty to now it's been a tough journey. He adds, "I fought every day. I didn't give up, and I turned my life around. I'm here to win." Being anxious for this second chance, Nelly T. vows to take on anyone in his sight and do anything he can as he looks to become the best. But look out...if tensions rise - and if a night of punching a door out in his AYTO house is a good example, so will his red-hot tensions. Now, it's all about keep cool in this paradise.
● NICOLE / Underdog (Real World Skeletons)
More than a year ago, we saw Nicole on Real World Skeletons as she became part of the house's own Wolf Pack. Taking a break from being a cop in the Big Apple, this Staten Islander is bringing a blue blooded attitude to her first Challenge, and ready to enforce a zero-tolerance policy for being weak. She also comes here newly single after her long-term girlfriend gave her an ultimatum to choose her or go to Thailand, opting to choose the ladder. If she wins, she plans to move to new quarters and get a dog because, "...girls are a bit more difficult than I thought." Well, Nicole might have her hands full in this house, and has to be ready for anything that's much different than Central Park.
● SHANE / Underdog (Road Rules Campus Crawl)
An MTV LGBT pioneer, Shane first appeared on Road Ruies Campus Crawl fifteen years ago, and has been on four previous Challenges. His last one was Fresh Meat in 2006 (a record for longest gap between starts), and has yet to attain a win like his fellow castmates. He did make news in South Carolina when he was part of SC's first legally married same-sex couple, but he & his husband went to Splitsville two years later. Shane can look to that ordeal as motivation as he tries to rediscover who he is in the quest for the cash, which he plans to invest in a LGBT business if he wins. He's always worn his heart on his sleeve and has a brutal honesty that many will see for the first time here.
● SYLVIA / Underdog (Real World Skeletons)
Okay, so she's not one of those doing the matchmaking in the Caribbean, but Sylvia does have a mind for that profession, being a pro love guru as a KC wedding planner. But this Real World Skeletons alum is taking a break from that to compete on her first Challenge in hopes that she can win money and build towards having her own event space for this big events. If what we saw in Chicago is any indication - and with a few of her roommates in the same house, we might be in for some fireworks like what happened there, including one of those she got close with. She's sweet, abrasive and may have that short fuse explode again in Thailand.
● THEO / Underdog (Real World Bad Blood)
It seems as if we were just watching Theo get sent home from Seattle and the Real World house for fighting with his Bad Blood Kassius. But this arrogant and contentious Chicagoan has rested up and ready with more passion to prove himself, especially with his football background - which saw a pro potential go up in flames after his arrest for a pot bust in Terre Haute, IN. Though he's a rookie, he's on a mission to redeem himself and win, and also do it for his mom back home. He confidently says, "I'm going to earn this money by coming to every challenge and completing the best that I can." With another chance, he's focused and driven to get the job done.
● TONY / Underdog (Real World Skeletons)
Tony has had quite a past few years in the public eye: he's fallen in love, gotten into a heated temper and he's become a dad two times. The last time we saw him on TV, an explosive temper and a fight with his partner sent him home early on Rivals III, but he's back to try and see if a third times a charm. Rough and tough, this bad boy from Baton Rouge has to face more of those demons but reaffirms, "Alcohol is out the window. I got two daughters to fight for back home, so I'm not going anywhere." Anything can happen here and don't be surprised if that temper returns. But if he does keep his cool, his kids can become proud their daddy got them something from Thailand.
►THE CHAMPIONS
● ASHLEY K. / Champ on Battle of the Seasons II (Real World Back to San Diego)
When I began following The Challenge five years ago, one of those who wasn't affected by the drama of her winning San Diego team on Battle of the Seasons II was Ashley K. She has that sunny personality who just went cross country looking for "The Runner", but as she's on this loaded Champions team, she knows she has to prove her worth on this team. She says, "I've only done one Challenge and everyone else has done multiple. I feel like an Underdog. I want to prove to myself that I can win again." And with her passion for CrossFit it should be a breeze, along with her having that chill personality. But then again, her ex is also in this house as well, too.
● BANANAS / Six-Time Champ (Real World Key West)
Well, there's nothing more to say about Bananas, other than him being The Challenge's most decorated champ with $685,000 in winnings, 6 wins out of 14 starts and a resume that makes him a fundamental part of this show. In the aftermath of the most controversial moment in Challenge history: his revenge move of taking all the $275,000 in prize money and leaving Sarah broke on Rivals III - Bananas promises that won't take a breather after that jaw-dropping moment in Argentina last year. He returns to keep running and fighting until he's given everything he's got and has eyes on extending his run as this show's winningest competitor. What's next? Stay tuned.
After a three-year absence, CT returns to The Challenge as part of the Champions team by way of his Rivals II win. This Boston bad boy and Challenge loose cannon has reemerged with a new outlook on life and a changed man after the death of the love of his life, Diem Brown three years ago. He says, "I used to have a chip on my shoulder but I'm not that same guy anymore. Life is funny. It's up and down for sure, but right now I'm in a high point in my life and I’m excited to be back." This legend has his eyes on smashing heads on the battlefield and teaching the newbies his true legend status. This reliable performer looks to prove he's still in this game as if he's never left.
● CAMILA / Champ on Battle of the Exes (Spring Break Challenge)
As she enters her ninth Challenge, Camila is intent on pulverizing the competition both in the house and on the playing field. However, an intense argument with Tony sent her home on Rivals III, and with just one win on her record she's eyeing trying to reform her dramatically destructive persona. She says, "I need to put the Camilanator aside. I don’t want the drama. This season’s going to be different. I just want to come in to win." Camila comes with renewed focus, but as we all know it's not easy to follow through on that promise given her long history of blowing up in this Challenge house. Don't be surprised if that happens once again on this season.
● CARA MARIA / Champ on Bloodlines (Challenge Fresh Meat II)
After falling short many times, Cara Maria finally ascended to the top of the Challenge podium on Bloodlines when she won the final inside Berlin Olympic Stadium. After taking a well deserved break back in Montana, this red-headed rebel is back and more fired up than ever thanks to her broad training resume: hiking, rafting, riding her horse and being a cardio kickboxing trainer. Plus, she's single after ending her much-publicized relationship with fellow Challenger Abram. Cara Maria says, "I don’t care about the haters. I want to do well for everybody that believes in me, I know that I'm strong." Now the challenge for her is to keep her head in the game and not let anyone distract her.
● DARRELL / Four-Time Champ (Road Rules Campus Crawl)
Invasion marks the return to The Challenge stage for a true heavyweight: Darrell won his four Challenges in his first four appearances dating back to Gauntlet I in 2003, and has $243,000 in earning placing him second to Bananas. We last saw him on Fresh Meat II partnering with Cara Maria, and this former Golden Glove boxer and trainer returns intent on regaining his crown and doing it for his family. Darrell says, "There's a lot of pride that comes with this and I’m here to win. I got two kids now and I try to instill in them no fear, and to believe in yourself. I'm doing this for my family." With this deep Champions field, this legend has his work cut out for him.
● LAUREL / Champ on Free Agents (Challenge Fresh Meat II)
Someone we also saw in Vancouver was Laurel, and the last time we saw her was atop a volcano after notching her first Challenge title on Free Agents. This powerhouse returns intent on not only getting victory #2 but also with an unblemished elimination record: eight times she's been put on the verge, and eight times she's emerged victorious. She says, "In the past, people have really come down hard on me because I seem like a robot. I don't play with my emotions. I focus on what I need to do, and if I'm having fun or getting to know people, that weakens my game. But I am not a cold person." With that softer side someone might steal her heart, but that's only part of this vicious veteran.
● ZACH / Champ on Battle of the Seasons II (Real World Back to San Diego)
And a famed part of that Free Agents final was of Laurel trying to revive a seemingly out of breath Zach. The last time we heard from this beast and Battle of the Seasons II champ was in the Rivals III house and despite not being there he broke the heart of Jenna when their relationship ended. He reassures that he's focused on the game and nothing else - which also includes another ex in Ashley K.: "I'm not good at being in a relationship, I’ve tried and failed, but I’d like to win another Challenge because I am a champion, and I want to prove that it wasn’t just a fluke." As a trainer and gym manager, Zach has always proven to be a force to be reckoned with... watch out.
Now in the past two seasons, this has been of where we would ask, "Who Are These Newbies?" This is where we would take the opportunity here to help introduce the first-time Challengers to you and to provide them the respect and recognition they deserve, so you never meet them for the first time on the premiere - a two-hour one, in fact. But because of the influx of those who are rookies and returnees to this season - and also to give your eyes a bit of a rest after this first post, we'll be tabling our traditional look at them to their own post with more background in a devoted post coming up next weekend before the Super Bowl.
On our 2016 Debrief, Andrew Kirk and I both shared the same anticipation for this Invasion of the Champions. He's anticipating the return of those old-school challengers while I voiced my readiness for seeing those we've been covering since we first began covering the Trifecta five years ago as well as everything else that's coming in the next few months. As I told him, "We have something nice coming up here," and this is just the start. Let's get this going.
