As you all get to enjoy your late winter/early spring's weekend - whether you're in the cold or in the sun in unseasonably warm places across the country, how about if you can take a break with us here at DCBLOG, as we now bring you the 'Pulse of Week 3 of The Challenge - Invasion, and the last week where the spotlight is solely to the newbies.
   Last week in Thailand, we saw Ashley and Hunter get close - both in the shelter and on the field when they took that week's mission, while her San Francisco roommates Cory and Jenna made it a sweep in the elimination. But of course, all the attention was on what happened there in the cliffs of Thailand, where Theo decided to quit in front of TJ Lavin, leading to him being the latest to get scolded by the guy who doesn't like to see people give up.
   This week as the season's first two challenge and elimination winners have already punched tickets to the Oasis, six Underdogs are left to battle it out for the last four tickets to the Oasis. Paranoia decides to get the best of the oldest of the Underdogs and forces him to lash out, while romances bloom in the Shelter as they and everyone else anticipate the end of their stay by the beach. And after a demanding final elimination of this season's first phase, the real game begins.
   Coming up, all the action, reaction and interaction of the week that was leading into Challenge Tuesday, up to the moment the champions making their entrance. And if you're fond of the old-school vets, after the diary ExtraTime will catch up with an Original of the Real World and The Challenge and tell you of some of the great people he has met in the 20 years since his MTV debut.

So, the eighteen underdogs who've started this season have now been paired down to twelve after the last challenge and elimination prior to the merge. After seeing Hunter win last week's challenge, his fellow Team AYTO Season 3 pals take a slice of both this week's challenge and elimination in Amanda taking the girls win in the former, while her Rivals partner last year, Nelson, takes the win for the guys in the ladder in that grueling climb up the mountain. A romance Nelly T. developed with Latoya actually becomes short-lived in her losing that elimination battle to Sylvia, while Shane won for the guys in that mission despite his initial struggles.
   And of course, at the end of the episode came the surprise a lot of you have been anticipating in the champions coming out of the tunnel in to officially begin this Challenge as is the stay of everyone in the Oasis. CATCHING UP WITH...
SYRUS - REAL WORLD'S ORIGINAL LADIES MAN

As we're seeing here, things are certainly different in this MTV world of ours compared with when most of us were in our younger years. But what we saw with Shane winning this week's challenge for the guys, and his Road Rules RV-mate from 15 years ago Darrell arriving, this season they are the ones holding up the torch for the old-school players of the past those fans love and who we've seen a little more often than we think at first - Abram, most recently on Bloodlines last year. This offers the backdrop for this Catching Up with... profile of an MTV OG from the late 1990's.

   As everyone knows, New England has become a favorite hub for MTV casting directors over the years, from David of Real World Seattle to Tyler of the current Are You The One? season, and now Chris of the cast of Stranded. As we told you a while ago, four recent alums of all three Trifecta shows - Emilee, Brittany, Sabrina and CT - all collaborated on the upcoming indie horror film Habit. And twenty years ago in 1997, The Real World went to Boston for the show's sixth season. The cast called an old firehouse their home base, while the season's group job saw them work an after school program with kids in the Boston area. It even featured a cameo by President Clinton when the group and the kids traveled to an event in Philadelphia, where an incident there led to the firing of a castmate from their job - which in later seasons would've led to their dismissal from the house.

   Real World Boston is notable for introducing Sean Duffy, a Wisconsin lumberjack who eventually got married to a fellow Real World original - Rachel Campos of the San Francisco season, which has brought them and their children to Washington, D.C. as Sean is now a Congressman on Capitol Hill. We also saw Genesis have a real-life encounter with homophobia, another lady from Texas who had just come after losing her mom to cancer, a guy who eventually became a Real World casting director, and a student from Stanford who actually caught one fan's attention on, what locals like us call "The Farm", more than the First Lady when she visited there.

And then, there's Syrus Yarbrough, who came to the City of Champions from Los Angeles, and for someone who is an avid Lakers fan and has lived and breathed basketball all his life, he would blend in in Celtics territory despite the city's tough reputation. When we met him there, he worked in youth basketball as a coach and referee, and when news got to him that he would be cast it came to him right there on the courts of Santa Monica. And there in Boston, Syrus became the show's first ladies man - the one the ladies would be attached to in bringing home girls every night to keep company, and he adds, "thank god I am a "Born Again Playa" But I know how to have a good time."
   In the book, Real World - The Ultimate Insider's Guide, Syrus explained his reasoning for getting onto the show back in 1997: "I have a few views about interracial relationships and relationships I'd like the world to know. I want people to understand racism. Racism is tought, it's not something we're born with. ... My purpose in life is to educate people about racial unity. As black as I am black, I'm as white as I am black. If there are boundaries, you can look around and see me outside both of them." While there in Boston, he got in a number of racial arguments with some of his roommates, but Congressman Duffy remembered, "He's my first black friend and I learned a lot of race from him." But Jason added, "Syrus has the biggest heart of any man I've ever met in my entire life. I like him and respect him a lot."

   Then, Syrus did five Challenges, but it wasn't until 2001 7 four years after his original season that Sy got to do his first official Challenge - the Extreme Challenge. The most notable moment he had was a brush-in he had with James of Team Road Rules after an incident they had, but afterwards Sy and his Real World group won the crown. He then did Battle of the Sexes, The Inferno and Gauntlet II in this age where it was Real World vs. Road Rules, and as a previous champion he then joined Johnny Bananas and friends on the Champions team on Ruins eight years ago.

As an elder statesman of TV's original reality series, Syrus has had the chance of being able to represent The Real World to everyone he's crossed paths with over the past twenty years. He's been a staple of Spring Break for just about that long, and owns & manages one of the many companies who deal with students during their time of getting down and dirty that's now just around the corner. It's impossible for us to post every picture as we normally do here in these ExtraTime bits, so we decided to just hyperlink them all to on here to his Instagram, @SyrusMTV. But he has met so many people of particular interest - in- and outside Team MTV - that we decided to list them on here.
● On the music side, Syrus has hung out with Sean "Puffy" Combs, Chris Brown, Cee-Lo, Tyler the Creator, Brandy, DJ Steve Aoki, Taboo of the Black Eyed Peas, American Idol's William Hung, music legend Stevie Wonder, 36 Mafia's Juicy J, "Thong Song" king Sisqo, and even went to the bedroom where Michael Jackson lived those last hours of his life. While on Spring Break in 2015, Sy also got to meet Rae Sremmurd before there was "Black Beauties" and the Mannequin Challenge.
● Notable entertainment figures he's hung out with include kings of adult entertainment Ron Jeremy and Girls Gone Wild creator Joe Francis; '90s star Corey Feldman, David Arquette, and that guy Urkel - Jaleel White.

● Since he served as a referee to a one-on-one game with two sure to be Hall of Famers in Kobe Bryant and Reggie Miller on his first Challenge, Syrus has met many NBA stars including the Pacers' George Hill, the Clippers' DeAndre Jordan, Laker icon Derek Fisher, Celtics legend Paul Pierce, and the Kings' DeMarcus Cousins. ... and outside of hoops he's mingled with fighters Victor Ortiz, Shane Mosley and Quinton "Rampage" Johnson and ESPN's J.A. Adande.
● And, we wouldn't complete this without mentioning his fellow MTV alumni - and this is a lengthy one here folks: fellow Challenge original Beth S. and C.T., Cameran of the first San Diego season & Bravo's Southern Charm, Mike "The Miz," Nick from Hollywood, Evelyn, Hawaii's Teck & Austin's Nehemiah, the late Ryan Knight, Cory and Shane of this Invasion season, Ryan of AYTO Season 1, former Road Ruler Laterian, Denver's Tyrie & friends, Laura from St. Thomas, Sydney's Kelly-Anne and Philly's/AYTO All-Star host Karamo, Sarah, Portland's Jessica, Eric "Big Easy," Paris' Adam, Seattle's David, Back to Vegas' Leroy, Jersey Shore's Pauly D. & Angelina, and Rob Dyrdek and Chanel of Ridiculousness. And of course, a few of his Boston roommates: Sean, Kameelah & Elka.

Only time will tell if, at age 45, Syrus has one more Challenge left in him in this current wave of one or a few players making comebacks to the fifth major pro sport, like what we're seeing with CT and Darrell this season. But in the time since we first saw him on that basketball court getting the news that he had been cast for Real World Boston, it's been a great ride for Syrus in becoming a well-respected member of the MTV family. Real World'ers and Challengers, past and present, and those outside the ecosystem have at one time or another crossed paths with him at the Southland, at Spring Break and wherever he goes. Some of that negative stigma that might've come with what we saw in his Real World season has worn off over time to the point where now he's friendly with everyone. That comes with having that great outgoing personality that, if you follow Sy on social media, you'll see everywhere he goes.
