Welcome back to DCBLOG's coverage of The Challenge: Free Agents and to DC SocialPulse powered by DCNOW for episode 9 as the competition & tension in the house intensifies. Last week in Uruguay, we got to see competitors posing and another love triangle emerge when a late night hookup and a player voted into the draw complicate things.

   This week sees the return of two proven favorite games for this week's mission and elimination, plus the season's most popular romance is again put on the line. Most notably as the pressure increases as the number of competitors dwindles, a friendship forged in Costa Rica is broken apart and one competitor suffers an surprise injury that could take its toll on all hopes of winning this season.

   Along with our episode diary and theWRAP, this extended SocialPulse will also cover the cast's weekend in New York taping the Free Agents Reunion. And speaking of that, at the end of this post we'll have info on how we can involve you in our Fan's View post once the dust settles on this season. Plus, I'll share a few stories of successful comeback seasons in recent Challenges.

theWRAP

On now to theWRAP and what the title of this episode is, "Best Friends for Never." Three years ago, we became fans of Team Black when Laurel and Cara Maria quite literally turned from being rivals to BFF's when they placed 2nd in the Rivals final. Well now, that seems all like a distant memory as Laurel feels every girl remaining would want her support, and CM feels she has Laurel first in the list. From the looks of it, we thought they would have each other's backs, but Laurel believes if she ran the game, she would consider putting her friend for elimination. Of course, this frustrates Cara as she tells her that she's annoying her, which in turn they become angry & stop talking. No doubt we're all surprised that such a tight relationship would turn sour all in a matter in minutes.

   This week saw a familiar fan favorite game return for this week's mission, and it's Dug Out. Just as it was on the two Rivals seasons, it's a pairs event, and both the six remaining players for both guys & girls were paired off. The objective: transport balls down the ramp to the opposite side, all the while having to maneuver your way up & down through the ramp dug out of the ground, which also intersects in the middle and, of course, collisions will happen like we're at a 4-way traffic stop.

   Last season, this was where Paula & Emily stamped themselves as finals favorites winning that mission. This time around, it would be Theresa & Nany, who run faster than the other two teams, Devyn & Laurel and Cara Maria & Jessica, and Team Gonzo takes the win. Three years ago, this exact game decided the last spot in the final, and we know what happened when Bananas got his revenge. Three years later, the loser of that, CT, teamed with Zach for the guys and, while we all wonder how they could eventually face off in an epic elimination battle, for now they took care of things rather easily.

   The love affair between Nany and Cohutta continues to win our hearts, but for the 2nd straight week we saw the possibility of one of them being sent into elimination. The winning teams are undecided of whether to send in the cowboy or Leroy, but Nany doesn't want to send him in knowing he's in danger, but Cohutta wants her to fight & save for him. But she feels that she doesn't have much power, and he wants her to do whatever she can so doesn't have to worry about it. And when it came down to voting, Nany did play it safe in voting in Johnny while the other three do send Cohutta in. For the girls, the winning foursome all agree to vote in Jessica, which some feel they want to see her prove herself instead of getting a free ride to the final. And for CT, he's honest in saying Jess is the girl he doesn't like to be paired with.

   Balls seem to be the theme of this week, not only in the week's challenge, but also the elimination too. There, another fan favorite game, Balls In, takes center stage for the third time this season, which previously saw Latoya take out Jemmye, Chet forfeit to Frank and Jasmine & Isaac fall to Laurel & Bananas respectively. This time around, Cara Maria and Leroy drew the kill card to face Jessica and Cohutta.

   It's ladies first for this week as Jessica and Cara Maria square off, just as they did when Princess Hulk was in her very first elimination. This matchup definitely matched what we saw with 'Toya & Jem, and you couldn't think of who could win this. Jess does everything she can, but never scores any baskets and wrestles Cara Maria a few times. The redhead only manages to get 2 balls in, but it's enough to take out the win. And for the guys? It's not as close as the girls as the other match between Leroy & Cohutta saw Leroy score the first 3 points and prevents Cohutta from registering a score, and giving Mr. Lean Body a much needed dose of confidence as he takes the win, much to the sadness of one Nany, who Cohutta went to give a good old kiss as he left the arena.

   What made Cara Maria's win that much more satisfying? She not only set the mark for most girls elimination wins, and extends her elimination winning streak to 5, this was also when Laurel was rooting for Jessica, which might've surprised people and was the total opposite of when Cara and Jessica congratulated each other on a great battle either one deserved to win. But did it come at a cost? After her battle, and while everyone was talking about Laurel's behavior and Nany being consoled for her best friend leaving, Cara Maria sees a medic, and believes she may have a fracture and recommends taking an x-ray of it. The question now is, will this bring her journey to winning her first Challenge to an abrupt halt? We'll find out soon enough.

Winners of the Night

- Nany & Theresa: Our good friend from Croatia, Neya, is quite clearly the biggest fan, at least in Europe, of both of these ladies, who also happen to share that Gonzalez surname. For Nany, getting back up from colliding with Cara Maria and regaining her form and winning this week, along with what went on off the field with Cohutta, netted her fantasy points and confidence that she can finally get over the jinx of falling short before the final and finally making it to the end. And for Theresa, adding this mission win to her first elimination win definitely sees her odds improve towards finishing in the money.

- Zach & CT: As I wrote in theWRAP, most of us are probably eager to see another veteran/rookie elimination showdown, considering after what we saw with Jordan & Bananas. The next one many want to see should be between CT and Zach, considering their similar physique & size. But for now, when both fellas teamed up to do this week, it was a done deal and won this very easily.

- Leroy: When we first saw Leroy on a Challenge, he had a great rookie campaign on Rivals, teaming with Adam R. and then with Mike to became enough of a factor & went to the final without a jungle trip. We thought it would be a harbinger of great things for Mr. Lean Body...not so. In his next two starts, he did poorly on Exes and Rivals II, and hadn't shown much on Free Agents. But when we wondered if he's able enough to keep up with the others, this week's elimination was a statement game for him. By dominating Cohutta, he finally has the mojo he's been lacking since being on Exes. It's clear now...in a field Brian Cohen feels is one of the deepest men's final five's, Leroy has proved why he's become a power player, and given he's the only multiple Challenge participant left in the field w/ no title, maybe this is after all why he wanted to be here in the first place.

- Cara Maria: We've talked about in our past Wraps this season about how Cara Maria has evolved from being an underdog in the past to now becoming a solid contender for the first time in her career with a great chance to win her first gold medal. Like Leroy, Cara competing in her 3rd elimination was another statement game, but this time taking place amidst uncertainty about her strongest friendship going into Uruguay. In a battle where either girl could win and her opponent did everything she can to contain her, Cara came away victorious. With her winning her third elimination this season, her fifth straight going back to Thailand, and now winning more eliminations than any other lady in Challenge history, she's finally becoming a power player. Now comes the adversity of not only trying to patch things up with Laurel, but also trying to compete through injury.

- Cohutta: In this return to the Challenge stage, Cohutta proved that a 5-year absence hasn't hurt him even one bit, and as he leaves this week he certainly has a lot to be proud of in making this very deep run on Free Agents. As I wrote in my pre-episode 9 post, the season he had as a whole is obviously a great accomplishment, and all the more remarkable considering his small size compared to the rest of the field. He was the only guy to clear the log in the opener, won the drag/bicycle race w/ Laurel, had a great relationship with Nany, got a night on the town just for him on his birthday, had memorable one-liners in the interviews, and won last week's elimination quite handily. It's certainly made up for lost time on these shows, both for him and for his Team Sydney castmates. Don't be surprised if he repeats this feat & goes all the way when he gets called to his next one.

- Jessica: Much like some who've fallen in the Draw, Jessica doesn't go home as someone who lost before a final, but one who can be proud of what she's accomplished in Uruguay. After being first to go home last year, she adopted a rigorous fitness regime that has seen stellar results and outperforming all our expectations. Of course, who can forget her being clutch when she bravely crossed that log and conquered her fear of heights. She then followed that up with a number of other great performances and didn't give up in this week's battle w/ Cara Maria, and showed great sportsmanship congratulating her on her win. It wasn't long ago I followed her when she had only 40 followers back when she was a nobody to most of us after filming RWPDX. Jess, I'm obviously proud of what you've done and to have been on this ride with you since the start, and you've got a great future ahead of you.

DC's VIEW: Comebacks

With Cohutta doing great this season and Laurel proving she's the same force as she has been since Fresh Meat II, it proved that someone can take a few years off from doing these Challenges and can come back and still be a factor as if they never left. Along with her and the cowboy, Isaac and Emilee also made return engagements this season after upwards of 5 years on the sidelines and all improved upon their previous challenge performances, albeit her with one extra week and him being unchanged.

   As a relative returnee to this world, I know what it's like to return to watching these shows after an absence and though a lot has changed, a lot is still the same. These days, of course, we see a good core of the cast being on season after season. But, with this retro movement that we're seeing in much of our landscape today, we've also seen some other competitors take time off and return & make a great impact in their comeback season And as I've only seen BOTS, Rivals, Rivals II and Free Agents in its entirety among recent Challenges, I've singled out a couple stories.

- When I saw BOTS two years ago, a preseason storyline was Team Las Vegas. As the two Vegas seasons are two of The Real World's most-popular seasons, they decided to pair two members from both the 1st & 2nd seasons. Joining Dustin & Nany from Back to Vegas were Alton & Trishelle from first Vegas season that came out when the XXV cast were in elementary school. He had last appeared on a Challenge on Inferno 3 in 2007, while her last one was on Gauntlet II nearly a decade earlier. As you would suspect for a team who haven't been together before, there was some dissent in the team, particularly with Alton trying to throw an arena to get himself out and then after that loss he & Nany had, where that extended over to Trishelle & Dustin. But they managed to toughen up and after winning week 4, they then won the last regular challenge, held in Namibia, to earn the automatic berth in the final and eventually finished 2nd. And although she got some flack for leaving the house after her fight with Aneesa and in turn sending Sarah home on Rivals II, Trishelle taking 2nd in the final in Namibia is still a very good feat, just as good as winning a bracelet at the World Series of Poker.

- Diem: The most-notable story in recent Challenges, and the one that brought the casual viewer who might not know half of the competitors to this franchise, is Diem. She hadn't appeared on a Challenge since The Ruins, and it was, of course, because of her treatment to cure ovarian cancer. She reappeared on Exes, and while I didn't watch much of it, everyone became captivated by her love affair with CT, which began many years ago on a previous Challenge both had been on. There in the Dominican Republic, they both did very well and made it to the final all the way in Iceland, and they were both destined to win until he struggled during that final and finished 2nd to Bananas & Camila. Then after the finale, Diem's cancer reappeared and once again all of us felt concerned for her. But with everyone's support, once again she beat the odds for the 2nd time as it went into remission. And after successful treatment she was on Rivals II, and though she & Aneesa won a mission, hung tough but fell short of the final, she captured everyone's hearts as the true comeback kid in Challenge lore.

For me, it's always great to see someone make a great comeback after being away for some time to do very well in any competition. From seeing all those tweets, it's clear passionate fans do miss the veterans who are a huge part of this show. And after seeing what everyone can do when they can just rely on themselves, then wait until when the vets try to lay claim to who is king on these shows, though for me it might get too predictable if they own the house. But unlike other Challenge fans, I take the philosophy I have with the NBA in which I'll be ready for action and will be comfortable with whoever is competing on a season because of having a strong rapport with the community, both old and new. For now, we can commend those who've made reasonable to great comebacks on this season.

Calling All Fans for Reunion Revealed

Finally, it's mission time on here. With it having just taken place recently, very soon, and once again, DCBLOG will be hopeful in covering The Challenge: Free Agents Reunion for our DC Fan's View series, which will come your way at the end of the season. With this in mind, I'm posing a challenge for those in the social media world and for those who are as passionate about these show for this task. And if you're a super-fan who got the opportunity to see all of your favorite cast members from these shows face-to-face last weekend, then this one is just for you.

   Before the season finale airs in a few weeks, I'll be reaching out on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and other social media avenues to those who went to the reunion to get their input for my Reunion Revealed article, which we'll post shortly after it airs. In much the same way as my buddy Andrew Kirk does very well in involving me & the MTV fan-amily in the dialogue on his webcasts, I will again aim to do the same thing in these blog chats on here, just as I did so successfully covering the RW Portland, Rivals II & Are You The One? reunions and the RW Ex-Plosion After Shows, all to great acclaim.

As always, the quicker you reply, the faster I'll be in posting it. But to meet the high demand and exceptional fan interest in these show, I do have a deadline of July 11th, which will be 15 days after it airs so I can have something Challenge-related to post while the buzz is still fresh.
