If you were with us for our season preview on Memorial Day weekend, we introduced you to our new group of 20 singles who have come to Hawaii to find their love of their dreams and fly out of the islands with $1 million in their possession. From two alums of FOX reality shows and a 6'8" cowboy from Colorado to two hip-hop artists, they're the latest to join AYTO with the hopes of following their predecessors to the winners' circle and to find their own perfect match.
For the premiere, they're given another game-changing twist to add to the blackout penalty of a $250,000 loss introduced last year as they are tested the instincts of Love at First Sight right out of the gate, with an additional $250,000 on the line should the couple they choose be a perfect match. Plus, there's all the usual pomp and circumstance that comes with our new cast of girls and guys single and ready to mingle. And something we've had in the first seasons of this show, a love triangle, leads to a first Matchup Ceremony that brings about both some embarrassing choices and something we've not had in a premiere.

So, we saw a big game-changing twist right out of the gate as instead of the usual Getaway Challenge, the cast got dared to find who they think are their perfect matches right as they met Ryan Devlin. After all of the group getting to mingle on their first day and night in the house, it was hip-hop artists Tori and Prosper that got sent to the truth booth with the hope that $250,000 would be added to their jackpot in the end, but it didn't turn out that way - though there's something musical that comes out of that which we'll delve into here later. And after an embarassing Matchup that saw a love triangle come out of it, the house can be lucky they got three beams - one more than in the first MC of the show's first three seasons, and at this early stage it's a crucial one. ON THE RADIO...
If you're a loyal DCBLOG visitor, you know that in the ending epilogue of our DC WRAP original write-up's in our MTV coverage, we publish a list of webcasts and podcasts relating to the shows of the Trifecta, whether it's weekly episode discussions or interviews with the many people of this ecosystem. A while ago, we told you about Real World original Heather B. becoming an evening host on Sirius XM radio after doing mornings on Eminem's SHADE-45, but she isn't the only one in the Trifecta who hosts a radio show, whether it would be on a national platform like hers or on terrestrial local radio. It's also the very reason that we won't see two of the people we profile here on Challenges anytime soon due to them co-hosting shows in radio's two highest-profile day parts.
Across the way in the nation's 7th largest market of Boston, there's Ashlee from Real World Back to New Orleans. We know about how renowned her season is with Jemmye & Knight's relationship, Ryan's drama, the group celebrating both Mardi Gras and a Saints' Super Bowl, and them helping in the city's post-Katrina rebuilding. For Ashlee - or "Lips" as we sometimes call her, she was a top scorer for Northeastern University's basketball team, and in NOLA she settled into an analyst role of sorts in the house while also doing radio work there. That experience with the ladder (including losing a voice recorder amidst the Mardi Gras mayhem) has definitely paid off for Ashlee in becoming a radio host - first in sports-mad St. Louis and now back home where she belongs at hip-hop outlet JAM'N 94.5 doing middays now after doing the morning show for several years. And she was, for a time, girlfriend of RW Back to San Diego's Zach.
Radio is unique in our media landscape where the personalities - whether they're DJ's, talk show hosts, journalists or commentators - get to communicate intimately, one-on-one with their listeners and let them paint a picture in their minds of what's going on around them, in addition to, of course, all that great and wide-ranging music. We won't see them on a Challenge anytime soon, but for Erika and Ashlee, they're fortunate of having the job they have of entertaining listeners in two of America's greatest cities, and now being heard nationally on their parent company's revolutionary iHeartRadio mobile app. And for Simone, it was in radio where she got her start in the business before we saw her on AYTO. There's nothing like the intimacy, immediacy and personality of radio.
