DC WRAP: The Challenge XXX - Dirty 30: Episode 6

BY DC CUEVA
■ @DC408Dxtr  TW / IG / YT

Welcome back again to our look at Week 5 of The Challenge XXX, and this truncated installment of the WRAP. This week, we saw the full field of competitors get back in action as they searched for treasure chests full of bounty, or booty as those pirates refer to, and saw Cara Maria & CT and Veronica & Nelson won and gain immunity. But it's what happened outside the competition venue of the beach that stirred controversy and outrage when Jordan used a low blow to insult someone and got everyone talking, and got him thrown into the Presidio.
This week's WRAP is coming to you earlier than normal as, as we told you yesterday, because we came up short of seeing both a regular challenge and a full elimination, our usual Things to Know recap covering this episode will be carried over into the Wrap covering the following weeks episode, and we'll have more on that after the jump. But we won't fully ignore this week entirely as ahead, we'll have the result of our latest Twitter poll and some thoughts on what we saw with Jordan. And afterwards, after what we saw from her in a few months' stretch on MTV, find out where Ashley M. has shown up next.  Join us there, will you?

JORDAN BEING JORDAN... X2

In this week's DCBLOG poll, the question that was put out there for those of you to answer was: "Do you think Jordan will recover after his untimely low blow remarks?"  75% of you told us that he will, and 25% felt that he won't. And that brings us to this objective observation...
In these past few Challenge seasons, passionate fans of this show have been anticipating the returns of many of these veterans we have grown to love over the years. We've had Darrell and Shane L. last season on Invasion, Abram and KellyAnne on Bloodlines, and before that Trishelle, Alton and Mark. And this season as well as on Champs vs. Pros, we've had Veronica, Derrick K., Jemmye and our focus here, returning after three seasons off.

It was five years ago this month that Jordan was filming his Real World season in Portland, and those who have been following his entire journey from when we first saw him in spring 2013 know about this unique personality who epitomizes the spirit of a rebel and someone who loves doing things his way, even if it can piss off some people in the process. There was that time of him getting into it with most everyone in Oregon, the many times we've seen his demeanor take over him in every MTV house he's called home, the athlete earning his way into a Challenge final as a rookie, his hookups with Sarah, Jonna and Laurel, that infamous gamble to go up against Bananas on Free Agents, and bouncing back from that loss to win Battle of the Exes II. And of course, there's him having to do these his five Challenge seasons with just one whole hand, and he's overcome that lifelong disadvantage to earn the respect of his fellow peers.
In the first five episodes of this return engagement, Jordan has been one of those supporting acts to everyone else in the house - similar to his role playing a policeman on a leading cable series which we'll revisit here later. Up until last Tuesday, he's only been on camera either during challenges or the four times we've seen him in that confessional. But it's true: it wouldn't be a season of The Challenge or his original Real World without him making noise and doing something that would be considered questionable for the sake of getting some much needed camera time. Remember when Nia was at his throat in the Portland house holding a lamp in her hand? When he was in that conversation with Zach on Exes 2 when Thor was degrading Jonna? When we saw him mistreat Jessica in Portland and then in Uruguay? Or when he made that move to go all in on Bananas and lose that elimination?
Yes, there have been a number of moments these past five years of, well, Jordan being Jordan, and it doesn't include him now sporting a '80s mustache that makes you think that, as many people have suggested, he looks like someone from an adult film than someone who made his mark on the last Real World season before they twisted that show all around. This was something that our friend Allan Aguirre got to write about on his Medium site where he posed the question, "Is Jordan a complete head@$$?", and discussed it more in detail along with his relative absence from this season until this past week. And it was after he did those posts that we saw the latest of these moments featuring the Oklahoman, and in fact, there were two of them.

First, if you saw Stranded with a Million Dollars earlier this year, a key object of content in the two rival camps led by Cody and by Alex was the ladder's obsession with peanut butter and how it was part of the almost weekly binge-buy the Core Four had enjoyed for the first half of their stay in Fiji. And here in Columbia, Jordan notices that a bag of bread had just been opened by someone, as are five open jars of peanut butter and jelly as if my kids had sneaked into the kitchen to grab one while I was busy doing blog work while babysitting. There, he tells the house an odd reasoning that at least one jar of the PB&J has to be closed up, and then proceeds to go outside to yell at those lounging around at the pool about that. But, this turns out to be a minor item compared to what takes place later on after they all had competed in that week's challenge.
After the week's challenge, the house heads out for a night on the town, with a couple couples getting it on close like Jemmye & Hunter and Nelson & Britni, and one threesome: Kailah, Jenna and Jordan, with the NOLA alum saying that Kailah and Jordan enjoy their time together despite her in that relationship with jack of all trades Mikey P, which we featured in our bit on them meeting up with Floyd Mayweather at his 40th birthday party (and for which he was in that fight last night with Conor McGregor). It's when they head on the way back home when, inspired by having a girl who just one year ago had her shining moment in Tori, they have a rap battle on the bus. They all enjoy their time in Ammo and Jemmye being able to spit some lines until Jordan gets to the mic.
Knowing they have had a little bit too much to drink, it's his rap with a line suggesting that Jemmye has a face equating to someone who has down syndrome. Suddenly, things get ugly by way of this insult that is far beyond not cool, and the bus goes silent... which means that someone f'd up and everyone begins to go after Jordan when they get back to the mansion. When they get home, those who were offended by what happened there began to go all in on Jordan while others went and consoled with Jemmye. The person who represents everyone who found him to use a disability to diss Jemmye was Aneesa, and it's after what happened there that Jordan knows he made a terrible mistake and instead of potentially being chosen as a Double Cross for the ensuing elimination, it's him who gets thrown in by the winners.

As we say, unlike others this site won't take a chance to take a cheap shot at Jordan or others who engage in objectionable behavior. But what happened last week also brings into light something that is much more deeper: the tough times of living with someone who has a disability. The previous night, the latest episode of a show that's made headlines for reasons other than what's been happening on camera, Siesta Key, featured its main star Alex and his family hosting a benefit event at his house to help raise awareness of a disorder known as Autism, something that my family knows well as my younger brother has had it his entire life.
As it is something I don't talk about much because I prefer to not focus the spotlight on myself on here, I, too, also was born autistic, but over time that condition has dissipated considerably to where it is not nearly as severe as my brother and is barely noticeable when you get the chance to talk to me personally and not on social media. But still, my young brother having Autism makes life so hard for my parents to have to deal with what he does every day, and it was one of the factors in my mom recently retiring from her longstanding job to be a caregiver to him.
Twenty-three hours after that episode of Siesta Key aired, MTV turned from celebrating a worthy cause benefiting people with disabilities to then having a disability being used in a much different manner, and not in a good way. Obviously, I do agree with everyone else that this is, no doubt, repugnant, insulting and just plain morally wrong to use something like that to insult someone and make a total fool of themselves. But sometimes these things come at the worst opportune of moments and, in this instance, this came when most everyone is inebriated and enjoying themselves at night going partying when they're letting off some steam after grueling competition the past couple weeks.

Obviously, Jordan has stated many times that he's truly sorry and recognizes that what he did should not have happened at all. It was a matter of a snap moment that he wanted to do to take advantage of everyone treating the bus ride home as that stage in Eminem's 8 Mile.
Below, we've included some of the tweets and a confessional from the targeted party. And if you got something to say on Jordan's actions, feel free to blow back at #DCChallenge at @DC408Dxtr.

JORDAN @JordanW_USA
"Jemmye and i have spoke and i have made my apology from the bottom of my heart. She and i will remain friends for a long long time. and with that, I would like to take this chance to apologize.. To absolutely nobody!(except Jemmye) The champ apologizes for fookin' nothin!"

JEMMYE - during the episode
"You’re gonna encounter men in your life that speak down to you because of their own insecurities. Just know your own self worth. Surround yourself with people, especially men, who uplift you. That’s all I really have to say about it."

VERONICA @v_cakes
"We are all beautiful, we are all human. Tonight's episode was a difficult one. Let's spread sensitivity, empathy, & love towards people that may be a little different than the majority. Let's stand up for those that can't stand up for themselves."

ASHLEY THE MASTERCHEF?

With all that we've seen in these first six episodes, it seems as if it was only last week that we saw Ashley M. bolt from Dirty 30 when she had lost all hope to defend her title after her luggage got lost in the airport and had yet another one of those meltdowns. And unlike other instances when someone had to quit and then get bearded by TJ Lavin and trolls on social media, this one was needed both emotionally and physically after her Invasion win and that emotional battle on Champs vs. Pros against Lolo Jones, where she also sprained her ankle… not to mention this past week, the untimely passing of her father.
Obviously, so much has happened for Ashley in the course of an entire year, and we discussed this at length in our premiere WRAP, in case you haven't checked that out yet. But for those who needed their Ashley fix, they got it in the most unusual of settings and across the TV dial on the broadcast networks.

If you're into a fan of the broader reality TV spectrum beyond just the MTV world, then you likely have heard of MasterChef. It is the king of reality-based cooking shows whose roots date back to 1990 in England, but it was only during the age of reality TV becoming commonplace many years later that it would begin to flourish. The show's format has been franchised in over forty countries, airs in over 200 of them and has seen novices, professional working chefs, celebrities and even kids take to the kitchen to put together the very best dishes in the quest to become winner, gain a cash prize and a cookbook in their name.
The most successful iteration of the MasterChef franchise came down under where it became one of the highest rated series in Australian television history. In 2010, the U.S. version began on FOX and has become popular in its own right, due in no small part to the presence of chief judge Gordon Ramsey. He has become renowned to fans of this sub-genre for having a fiery temper, being a strict in his demeanor in the stiff upper lip persona Englishman are known for, and dropping expletives much more often than what we saw Ryan Devlin do on the AYTO 5 kids… all in the name of trying to get all that food not only right, but also as perfect as if every last detail is magnified.
Forbes magazine has Gordon as one of the world's highest paid celebrities thanks to a line of his self-named restaurants located in Europe (chiefly in London), North America and elsewhere, as well as other shows he hosts outside of his MasterChef duties. Four of the ten American-based restaurants that bear his name are, in fact, located in what was once an oasis for all-you-can-eat buffets but has turned into a capital of quality dining - the Las Vegas Strip: a Burger joint inside Planet Hollywood, a recently opened Fish & Chips place at The LINQ near the High Roller Ferris wheel, a Steak House at the Paris hotel, and a Pub & Grill inside Caesars Palace… and that's where this story takes us to.

The midweek episode of MasterChef Season 8 that aired two weeks ago, the night after Episode 5 of Challenge Dirty 30, saw the top 12 chefs take on a big task at the first of its kind themed resort in this heaven for tourists: the 50th anniversary party for Caesars Palace. The dozen who made it to this stage of the game did their two-team challenge not in a big kitchen inside the hotel far from the casinos, but outdoors under the stars and in the pool area of the famed Roman resort in the same spot where many of boxing's greatest fights during the '80s and early '90s (i.e. Hagler vs. Hearns and the "Fan Man" fight at Bowe--Holyfield II) took place.
In this challenge, the goal of teams lead by aspiring cooks Dino and Daniel, who won the previous challenge on the episode proceeding, were to create a dish to satisfy VIP's from entertainment and hospitality in Las Vegas. During the challenge itself, Daniel's blue team began well as he distributed their task around his entire team, while Dino's red team started slowly and earned Gordon's wrath which, certainly, makes TJ Lavin feel like just another reality competition host. Dino's squad hastily prepared their dish first but after it prepared too quickly, they turn it around and complete first. When dinner time comes around, the party guests chose Dino and his team who had the best dish and won.

From a Twitter user
To the average viewer of MasterChef, they might not know a lot about MTV reality shows and don't usually see the kind of big time drama and sometimes raunchy and risque behavior young adults go through. But for, perhaps, the handful those who were watching that night who also are Challenge fans, they spotted someone familiar at the dinner table and actually had the money spot of sitting next to Gordon Ramsey. One suspecting viewer on Twitter (because the user name contains an explicit word, we won't publish that on here) was watching that episode of MasterChef and tweeted the following to Ashley: "When you're watching MasterChef and spot a VERY unexpected surprise. @MTVASHLEYBROOKE what!?! 🤣🤣 #thechallenge meets #masterchef"
Ashley then went to her Instagram @MTVAshleyBrooke to then tell everyone that, though she had just won $125,000 for being an unlikely Challenge champion, the chance to help out on a show with one of the richest men in the world was too good to pass up: "It wasn't a challenge (😂) judging these two teams. I am such a @gordongram fan this was a dream come true. #masterchef #thechallenge #fox #mtv #gordonramsay #foodie" Ashley K. commented, "Wait what?! How fun!", while Amanda added, "Hahaha I love that face I'm dead."
For a moment, those who watched didn't get to see Ashley go into all-out Smashley mode or cry, or as she told an Instagram user, "usually at the same time." But after what she went through after her surprise finals win, that grueling experience on Champs vs. Pros and everything that took place during this time including a move to Las Vegas and her budding modeling career, she really did need this time to reenergize in preparation for returning to a Challenge. Getting a chance to sit alongside Gordon Ramsey surely adds to her glowing star.

And on this delicious note, that will wrap it up for our look at Week 6 of The Challenge XXX. For now until Tuesday (and remember the show moves one hour later this coming week after a stellar season of Fear Factor with Ludacris), there's plenty more to this week's story in Challenge land, both in webcasts and with the castmates... and here's your guide to where to find them:
● In the aftermath of what happened in the Presidio, Ammo revealed a YouCaring crowd funding page with a story he got to personally share about that related to what happened to him just last year. Check out that post and help in his recovery at YouCaring, and we'll have an In-Depth look at him coming up during this cycle.
AfterBuzz TV is again covering The Challenge with their own after shows with hosts Pamela Gross, Paulina Aguilar, Jenna Bussiere and David Christopher. Following last week's episode, Derrick joined them to discuss what has happened so far, his thoughts on Episode 6 and much more. Check out that podcast here, as well as the entire AfterBuzz site for discussion of your favorite shows, including tonight's Game of Thrones finale including AYTO alum Ryan Malaty.
● Also this past week, The Brain Candy Podcast with Sarah and Susie, and its premium offering on Pateron, welcomed Marie to their show for their series of cast interviews, 15 Minutes of Blame. There, she discussed the season up to now, which you can check out on Pateron which you can subscribe to for a monthly fee, and also includes recent interviews with Challenge beast Emily, Nicole and their weekly discussions.
● Launched this past week is a new YouTube channel by current Challenge couple Ashley K. and Dario. They plan on doing regular video vlogs of life outside The Challenge, and in the first two videos they did some hiking in the heat of the deserts outside Las Vegas, and just yesterday posted a video on them going shopping all around town. Subscribe to that channel with more coming up.
● What happened this past week provided fodder for the MTV RHAP, as Brian Cohen (@CohenBrian_) and Ali Lasher (@LashTweets) discussed Jordan's actions and everything that happened in the hour on Rob Has A Podcast at robhasawebsite.com. Check out that site also for regular discussion surrounding Big Brother at that show heads late into its season.
● Check out Ace Nichols (@AceNichols33) and her distinctive Challenge recaps on her YouTube channel. Posted there are her recaps for Episodes #3, #4 and #5, with #6 to be posted in the coming days. And before he joins me for our Debrief, check out Andrew Kirk (@CSUGradAKirk) and all of his reality TV webcasts and interviews on YouTube, Blog Talk Radio and Reality Radio.
● And also check out the outstanding blog posts by fellow fan Allan Aguirre (@FebreezyFresh) on Medium, which in addition to his post on Jordan which was linked to earlier in this post as well as recaps, this week he also looked at which competitors to not mess around with, how the Double Cross would've changed Free Agents, appreciations of Challenge legends Paula and Brad, a chat with RW Skeletons' Violetta, and just posted a look at all-time Challenge upsets.

With the usual reminder to bookmark this site and to join my Dirty 30 conversation on Twitter at #DCChallenge, as we wrote yesterday this is a weekend of big events and after last night's fight tonight is the summer's last big bash. The MTV Video Music Awards are taking place down in The Forum in Los Angeles with Katy Perry serving as host, a multitude of performers taking the stage, and the world premiere of Taylor Swift's new video from her new album which drops before my birthday coming up in November. DCNOW will have all the excitement from the Southland coming your way starting in 45 minutes at 7PM ET/4PM PT at @DC408DxNow, followed by a special VMA's edition of DC Playlist and with news of the next new show I'll be live tweeting.
As you'll suspect, many from Team MTV including castmates from this Challenge will be attending the big show tonight, and in our posts covering Episode 7 next week we'll be sure to share with you their night at the VMA's, along with another Challenge champion making her way to Vegas as of the handful to get a chance to strut their stuff inside the ring. Also next week over the long Labor Day holiday weekend, after much promotion and time we will finally be able to present our midyear Reality Debrief with discussion on the first half of 2017 in reality TV and of this summer's shows. And if you have questions that we may want to use there, tweet them to #AskDCBLOG.

That is how we look at it this week in the MTV Trifecta and week 6 of The Challenge XXX - Dirty 30... hope you enjoyed it. For now, enjoy your Sunday and talk to you in a bit from The Forum.
