MTV Trifecta: Who Are These Newbies? - Ex On The Beach USA

BY DC CUEVA
■ @DC408Dxtr  TW / IG / YT

For the many of you who check out our wall-to-wall coverage of The Challenge, DCBLOG always states before each season begins that we feel that any new competitor there should be given a proper welcome to those who don't watch other MTV series outside of The Challenge. Who Are These Newbies? has afforded us that chance to introduce every rookie and returning veteran of every Challenge season we have covered since we began covering that show in 2013. We've written on everyone from one-time rookies Zach and Tori, to Challenge champs Brad and Veronica, and newcomers to the most recent season in Vendettas -- Melissa, Joss and Kayleigh... the ladder three are also responsible for helping set the stage for a new kind of romantic reality show.
As the new kid on the block in the MTV community, Ex On The Beach may be in many ways different from the other shows we have covered on this site the past five years, but still has the formula for success MTV viewers expect. But, to help ease the transition from what we saw from our British imports just recently in Spain, an icon of The Challenge who started on Real World four years ago, and many others from across the entire reality TV world are appearing on this first American installment of a show that debuted in Britain four years ago. So far, there's been plenty of drama that not only have glued people in from watching Jersey Shore, but also introduce new viewers to MTV's special brand of reality, and the precarious situation of MTV alumni and reality veterans being put through hell of seeing their exes invade Hawaii.
But like its Challenge counterparts, there are several people who are familiar to those who watch the broader range of reality TV, but are not quite well-known to those who just watch the channel that singlehandedly pioneered this genre. Conversely, EOTB represents the introduction to MTV Reality for those of you who got to know these people on ch2annels that have a broader appeal than just this channel's core audience of teens and young adults. And in the spirit of a preseason tradition in our Challenge coverage, we at DCBLOG would like to introduce you to the newbies -- in an MTV sense, at least -- to Ex On The Beach USA.

ANGELA BABICZ (Bad Girls Club 15)
Reality pioneers Bunim-Murray Productions aren't just the producers of The Challenge, Real World and Road Rules, they are also the team behind the Kardashians franchise, Project Runway, Mr. & Mrs. with Champs vs. Stars host The Miz, and even Ball in the Family with Lavar Ball and his bunch on Facebook Watch. They also helped produce a series that aired in the most recent incarnation of the Oprah-founded and now all-true crime focused Oxygen network, Bad Girls Club and if you thought that seeing big time drama on MTV was one thing, it's a whole other thing compared to the first of our subjects.
Like its RW counterpart, BGC cast several people each season in a house for a few months, but instead of guys and girls sharing space it was a cast made up entirely of the ladder, and whose focus was on fights, both physical and verbal, of women described as "highly aggressive, quarrelsome and unruly." It was no surprise that they were cast with problems of a psychological and behavioral kind, and who had a ton of baggage to carry with them to the house, and fights on this show occurred just as often as those we'd see at NHL games: plenty of them in full order. It meant that for those who watched, seeing those vicious fights like what we saw on Real World with Nia & Averey, Ceejai & Jenna and recently on Dirty 30 with Simone & Shane almost every week instead of just once in a while.
On Season 15 two years ago, the Twisted Sisters season saw the house being comprised entirely of sisters, and viewers were introduced to Angela Babicz and her sister Kristina, being nicknamed "The Competitive Cuties." And if this story rings a bell for MTV fans, Real World Bad Blood featured dueling sisters in Florida siblings Katrina and Anna Stack. Angela & Kristina's bio read:
"Angela and Kristina are trust-fund party girls with bad attitudes and short tempers. After their parents divorced, the sisters chose sides and Angela lived with their mother while Kristina moved in with their father. They have not always had a close relationship and did not speak for a couple years after an intense argument. Angela is a self-proclaimed princess who obsesses over all things fashion and beauty while younger sister Kristina is a proud tomboy who isn’t afraid to get dirty. The competition is always stiff between these Jersey girls and although they both agree they will own the house, they hope to learn to control their anger and create more friends than enemies."
On that season - for which a montage of that is embedded below, the season began with Angela and Kristina getting into words on what seems to be the most simplest chore to do of cleaning up their rooms. But later, Angela herself got sent home when she and a replacement roommate named Hanan and her sister Susu got into a fight that saw Angela throw glass at the former, but she did appear in the two following episodes and once again got into it with her rivals on the reunion. In fact, showbiz site The Wrap measured her blowup on Part 3 of that reunion among its top social media reactions and shared top billing with Lady Olenna of Game of Thrones. And in the time in between her BGC season and coming onto EOTB, Angela had plastic surgery done on her nose, which she shared her experience of what's referred to by doctors as rhinoplasty with her fans on YouTube.

CHASE McNARY (The Bachelorette Season 12)
For those who follow reality TV and love romance, you definitely know about Bachelor Nation. If you watch The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, Bachelor in Paradise and other shows spawned by this franchise, you live for when 25-30 men or women meet up host Chris Harrison and the bachelor who's seeking love from these romantic interests, and all that takes place between that and the tension convention of the rose ceremony. And if what happened with Arie Luyendyk, Jr. not long ago is proof, then it's why that franchise continues to grip millions on Mondays & Tuesdays… my mom included along with AYTO alums Kiki & Chelsey.
For the first two representatives of Bachelor Nation to Ex on the Beach, Chase McNary came to Season 12 of The Bachelorette (JoJo Fletcher's season) as a medical sales rep from Colorado and one who called himself the laid-back one that, as he wrote in his Bachelorette bio, "…that will have fun no matter the situation I am put in."  He also describes his perfect mate as having an "athletic build, natural beauty and perfect teeth," and that the one he would be married to would be "Your best friend... for the rest of forever."
For someone who's ambitious, honest and humorous - as evidenced by him disguising himself as a detective when he entered the house and citing Ace Ventura as a favorite movie, Chase, JoJo and the rest of the dating pool traveled all around the world, beginning in California, then down to Argentina and finally to Thailand. Along the way, they went to a Denver suburb where they met his entire family, then flew to Asia for the final where Chase spent time with JoJo on a beach and a boat ride. But then, he was ultimate heartbreak when fellow final 3 candidate Robby Hayes (more on him shortly) came into JoJo's room to interrupt her and Chase's date, which then saw her dumping Chase ahead of the final week despite him returning at the rose ceremony to apologize for what he did the previous night, and where Jordan Fletcher beat Robby to score JoJo.
For being the bronze medalist of Bachelorette Season 12 and how bad his quest to win JoJo's heart ended, Chase became so popular in Bachelor Nation that two events nearly changed everything. First: he came very close to being named the leading man for Season 21 of The Bachelor, and in fact had signed the paperwork and told family, friends and Us Weekly that he was gonna be the one… only for 2-time Bachelor runner-up Nick Viall to steal it from under the rug at last minute. And The Denver Post notes that Chase was originally slated to take part in this past February's Bachelor Winter Games, but the opportunity for this fitness trainer to bring his talents to a younger crowd and not pack too many layers for Hawaii as it would've been to Vermont was too great to pass up.
Below are his highlights from his Bachelor season and when he popped up on Ellen.

JASMINE GOODE (The Bachelor Season 21 & Bachelor in Paradise Season 4)
The other Bachelor Nation representative is one who went onto that 21st season of The Bachelor after Chase's heartbreak: Jersey native Jasmine Goode came to last year's quest to win Nick Viall's heart as a professional dancer who got to dance for both the Golden State Warriors and the Dallas Cowboys. She listed in her bio that her mom is the most admired person in her life and that Scandal's Olivia Pope would be the TV character she would most want to be.
On a season that saw the Backstreet Boys make a cameo in one of the episodes, Jasmine's most notable moment came in the same island that hosted the most laid-back Real World season ever in St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. She was one of six ladies chosen to go on a group date to play beach volleyball with Nick, but soon the attention turned to her as being frustrated with not scoring a one-on-one date with the stud that instead she decided to go all-in on him. Almost immediately, their chat became iconic, cumbersome and nonsensical as she stated her stated ambitions to not only confront him but also "choke him"... even to the point of her putting her hands around his neck. And almost immediately, Nick decided that he had enough and eliminated her on the spot (eliminations take place not just at the rose ceremony but also on the dates unlike on The Challenge).
Emboldened by what happened on the sands where Marie, Trey and Team STT roamed five years earlier, Jasmine then went onto Season 4 of Bachelor in Paradise -- yes, that same season that was in the news last summer for the behind-the-scenes sexual misconduct allegations that made headlines and temporarily halted production. Jasmine also shared that BIP 4 house not only with two she went to Coachella recently in Amanda Stanton and DeMario Jackson (who was named in the report in him & Corinne Olympios having had a sexual encounter that turned out to not be true but led to them leaving in week 1), but also with the aforementioned Robby Hayes, who along with finishing ahead of Chase was also romantically linked to another MTV alum in Kathryn Palmer from AYTO Season 5 and being friends with her Hawaiian castmate Tyler O'Brien (the one who dated Shannon Duffy and which resulted in their cast being the only cast to lose last year).
There in Mexico - and in the clips below, the attention in week 1 was on Matt Munson from Season 13 and a girl who competed with her, Christen Whitney, invaded Mexico. When she invaded her room, Jasmine called Christen "a slimy snake" just after she told her that Matt was off limits to the newcomer. Christen turned her attention after to trying score Matt with her date card - which they did, and Jasmine was left to say of that move, "It seemed a little sneaky and slimy. Christen is a little bitch... She's dead to me," and further called the newcomer "scallop fingers." But after this love triangle drama and before he was scheduled to hand out some roses, Matt decided to pull a fast one on everyone and decided that he would go home... adding more to this twisted drama of last summer.

 PAULIE CALAFIORE (Big Brother 18)
On the second day of this year, the Invasion to The Challenge of those not brought in from The Real World or as part of a Fresh Meat class continued when Natalie Negrotti and Victor Arroyo made the historic jump from Big Brother 18 of two years ago across old Viacom lines from CBS to MTV, all as talk of a possible reunion of their two parent companies rages on. They were followed in by Jozea Flores who is so far holding his own on Champs vs. Stars III (with maybe more to come if the rumors on the grapevine are true), and then there's Paulie Calafiore.
Viewers of the summer sensation first met this fast-talking New Jersey native as a DJ who, along with Alicia, call the central Jersey town of Howell home base. In his BB18 bio, Paulie described himself as "driven, passionate, and quick-witted," and also loves martial arts and exercise aside from being around music especially with being part of Bruno Mars' fanbase. Paulie earned his keys not by being casted in a typical casting call, but through the back door as part of a sibling twist offered that summer of 2016: his brother, Cody, went on Season 16 two years earlier (which also had Ariana Grande's brother Frankie as a houseguest) and being aligned with future Discovery Investigation host Derrick Lavasseur they made it together to the finale and finished 2nd to his good friend.
Paulie's Big Brother experience paled in comparison to that of his brother: he started out as a fan favorite who was Head of Household two times early on, had a showmance with houseguest Zakiyah Everette and a bromance with eventual runner-up Paul Abrahamian, but then found himself in hot water numerous times. Most notable was his treatment of the women in the house, especially when he referred to Natalie (who co-hosted the EOTB preview special with Johnny Bananas) as "F.T." -- fake tits in reference to her implants. He also made sexist and misogynistic remarks about the stereotypes of New Jersey women which received backlash from fans. And he also had the kind of arrogant and sometimes hypocritical personality that often makes reality fans angry, especially when he lost competitions he would not accept defeat and when he would accuse the female houseguests of being overdramatic when he himself would also be very emotional when things are not going his way.
Much to most everyone's delight, Paulie was unanimously evicted in Week 8 when Victor was Head of Household, and when he did not make it out of the Battle Back Jury house, where our clip below is of him and fellow House Guest Da'Vonne Rogers getting into words. Recently as this season has been airing, Paulie has been romantically linked to yet another girl who Jasmine competed with on Season 21 of The Bachelor and then shared quarters on Bachelor in Paradise last year: Danielle Maltby, who were set up by -- of all people -- their publicist. But not everything about him is negative or sketchy: Paulie spoke to Odyssey a year after his stay in the house of how he used his BB exposure to enact positive change and inspire others, despite all that we saw from him on national TV.

FAITH STOWERS (Vanderpump Rules)
Anyone who watches the entire reality TV palette knows what Bravo has to offer, and where longtime MTV fans can follow Real World San Diego alum Cameran Eubanks' newest adventures in parenting on the latest season of Southern Charm. The channel's most well-known franchise is The Real Housewives, which began in 2005 when cameras documented a group of housewives from Orange County when The O.C. and Laguna Beach put the home of Disneyland on the map. Additional installments featuring leading ladies from New York, New Jersey, Beverly Hills, Atlanta, D.C., Miami, Dallas and overseas followed, as well as numerous spinoffs including Vanderpump Rules starring Beverly Hills alum Lisa Vanderpump and her team at her West Hollywood restaurant SUR.
While not one of the key regulars on the cast of a show now entering its season 7 on a channel that once resembled PBS in its arts & high-brow fare, military vet, entertainment reporter & caregiver Faith Stowers nonetheless has been part of the discussion just as much as Stassi Schroeder, Scheana Marie and the others on Lisa's staff. Viewers first saw this Savannah, GA native on Season 4 when she, a server at SUR, and LaLa Kent decided to take their clothes off in the pool of their boss while visiting Lisa's son Max Todd as he recovered from surgery. But that skinny dip was only a blip in the radar compared to what happened on Season 6, where she was part of the big storyline that began that season of an always juicy love triangle involving her, bartender & model Jax Taylor and girlfriend & former Hooters girl Brittany Cartwright... this is no doubt the most twisted of all the backstories of our five subjects.
In a scandal that eventually became a tabloid sensation, that affair began a year before when Jax casually sent DM's to Faith (who had already moved onto another job) and where she began to put his online affection for her out in the open. That affection then it gradually grew from there when Jax and Brittany's relationship began to erode, and things began to get intimate between him and Faith. Eventually, they finally got to seal the deal, and hot mics would catch him fessing up to Brittany about him cheating on her with Faith - which made their relationship even more stronger. That included that now famous recording that has been the talk of the town for VPR fans on this season.
That led to an awkward night at a birthday party and then to tensions between Faith and the rest of the VPR cast... even to the point of her suing Stassi to get back stolen credit cards and clothing, even Jax's automobile. Even Jax himself reached out to Faith to tell of how that scandal changed his life and nearly caused him to go over the edge. Not surprisingly, this was her only time appearing on this season and where she got bullied on social media back when it aired earlier this year -- and below are what transpired on VPR, and then her breaking her silence to Entertainment Tonight.

So, there you have it: a Bad Girl who just hooked up with Mr. Team Chocolate, a Colorado heartthrob who got heartbroken on The Bachelorette, that dancer who nearly got too close to The Bachelor, a Jersey guy who pushed everyone's buttons on Big Brother, and that Southerner at the heart of a love triangle in BV. Angela, Chase, Jasmine, Paulie and Faith all had their moments the first time reality TV fans got to watch them as far back as just two years ago, and with their love lives being a bit checkered outside of the cameras, they are part of the perfect cast to bring a British staple into American homes.
And they, along with MTV alums Cory and Taylor, three who were chosen the usual way of casting calls and a bunch of exes who also include familiar faces to MTV fans, comprise the inaugural class of Ex On The Beach USA. Things have been steamy through the first month... but we are not quite at the halfway point, and more exes are on the way on what so far has been a entertaining season. And should there be a Season 2, perhaps more reality stars will have their moment of seeing their ex invade the beach.
