Usually in times like these when the weather is warming up, we'd be in a celebrating mode with the unofficial start of the summer being this past Memorial Day weekend, and teenagers & young adults celebrating that coming of age moment when they graduate high school and college. Unfortunately, that is not the case this time around, as the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic continue to permeate everywhere we are right now as parts of the country are reopening as the death toll exceeds 100,000.
It's with this in mind that the academic year has been cut short in many areas, most schools revert to distance learning via the internet to connect to their students, and the time-honored traditions of proms and graduations being axed due to social distancing and to curb the spread. It has been an unusual last quarter & trimester for those in the class of 2020 and those who had plans to have the time of their lives being cut short. This blogger's extended family knows it well, as my nephew's 5th grade promotion ceremony was called off, among other things.
However, there have been countless numbers of stories that have taken those in need of a break from the depressing news of the past two months - and the past few days in the Midwest - to give them some inspiration... and with our focus on MTV Reality and it being an escape for all of us in TV land, there are two such stories we'd like to share with you for some inspiration for the Class of 2020... which also happens to double as this DCBLOG site's 1200th post.
Perhaps by now, Romeo Miller would be hard at work serving as host on the fifth installment of the American version of MTV's Ex On The Beach... that won't happen for at least a little bit, but we are all crossing our fingers that our next visit to the Shack of Secrets will come sooner rather than later. The same is true for ViacomCBS stablemates Big Brother and Love Island, whose launches of their new seasons have been pushed back by COVID as well. But for someone who's been a family man and who has allowed viewers to get to know him & the family more thanks to his gig on WE TV's Growing Up Hip Hop series, 2020 has not been an ordinary year.
Four members of the family of the artist formerly known as Lil' Romeo, which of course includes his well-known dad Master P., have been deprived of having the customs of getting down on the dance floor at senior prom and then walking up on stage to receive a diploma to signify their graduation and the hard work of staying in school. But like everyone else, their school year was cut short and all the activities relating to senior year were nixed... and one could think of how devastated Jianni, Kiyah, Mercy and Vyctorius Miller were that those once in a lifetime moments were wiped out by the virus.
But their parents, relatives and their two well-known patriarchs had other ideas for their four kids to hopefully make the most of this experience. And over the Memorial Day Weekend last week, the Miller family held an at-home graduation ceremony with them being given their diplomas to the timeless classic of that graduation processional track "Pomp and Circumstance." And one of them also celebrated a birthday as well, to add more to a day they'll never forget where they celebrated it with their biggest supporters.
Romeo captioned to the following Instagram picture below @RomeoMiller, "I told em I’ll make a Tik Tok the day they bring home those diplomas ha. But swipe left to see some PRICELESS memories with me and my family and congrats to our 2020 graduates @mercymiller @vyctoriusmiller @jiannimiller @iamofficialqueenk and to all the 2020 graduates across the world! You guys did it through a pandemic! This is what life is about, celebrating moments like this. #GodIsGood".

The Miller siblings are only a few of the millions of students at elementary, middle, high school and college who have had their plans to have a coming-of-age moment of graduation or promotion be uprooted by corona. Many of those last acts of the school year were made into special virtual ceremonies through the internet, others still held those in person in utilizing the comeback kid of the entertainment industry in it being held in parking lots and being done by a drive-thru method.
Regardless, this hasn't dampened their spirits, as various media outlets have had a chance to celebrate them in the past month, including one of the spring's two major TV specials airing on CBS, ABC and NBC where LeBron James executive produced a special to celebrate the Class of 2020 with many celebrities joining in to offer inspirational messages and music. One such message didn't air on the show itself, but if there's one from those who have done an MTV Reality series in the past three decades, this might qualify - even though we saw him on just one series.
Ten years ago, The Real World headed to Washington, D.C. during the first term of the Obama White House. This was the season gave us two Challengers in Rivals II champ Emily Schromm & that romance she had with Ty Ruff... and who can forget that lovable cartoonist with the panda hat, Andrew? But the true purpose of Real World D.C. was to feature those who were engaged in what's going on in the world at that moment - it's certainly a different time then than we are in now.
Mike Manning came to Washington from the Denver area and where got to be in his comfort zone of being openly gay in exploring the Capital City's LGBT scene as well as be engaged in issues concerning people like him. He attended a dinner with the President in attendance and went up to Capitol Hill to meet then Representative Jared Polis, who in 2018 became the first openly-gay governor of a U.S. state when he was elected Governor of Colorado. Mike has become an up-and-coming actor since he left D.C., and his latest project, Amazon Prime series The Bay, has just been nominated for 7 Daytime Emmy Awards.
Also last week, Mike posted the following message of inspiration for the Class of 2020 on Twitter and Instagram @MikeCManning, where he reminds them of what they've gone through in the past semester and to get ready for what's next, when we hope everything gets back to normal.
