FOLLOW UP The Look: How Far
is Tattoo Far/Just Tattoo of Us
BY DC CUEVA
It seems tattoos and television just go together: Black Ink Crew on VH1 and Ink Master on the Paramount Network come to mind when it comes to the artform of ink being brought to your screen. But for the past few years, those shows have had a stablemate in the Viacom/CBS fold thanks to the global franchise known in the international realm as Just Tattoo of Us.
The show premiered on MTV UK and the non-American channels of its international fleet back in 2017, with its first series being hosted by Geordie Shore original Charlotte Crosby & 2-time Ex On The Beach UK alum Stephen Bear, who has made quite a mark on our side of the Atlantic when he crossed into our shores last year. And a year later, Just Tattoo of Us made its way to the U.S. as join EOTB in having an Americanized version of it airing here, retitled How Far is Tattoo Far?.
Regardless of what it's called, the show's concept is simple: pairs of friends, family members and couple will come into the parlor, design tattoos for one another which are designed by leading artists in the tattoo industry, and which are kept secret to them under they are told by the show's hosts to take off their shades and see what was made for them. How these people "deal with the reveal" is just as entertaining as the designs on their skin, which are not always suitable for viewing at work or with friends. And it has become both a ratings and social sensation both here and in Britain.
In addition to welcoming people of all kinds to the parlor, both the American and British versions have also welcomed those who are familiar to MTV viewers from other series. And in its two seasons airing on MTV U.S., Snooki, Younger's Nico Tortorella and Wild 'N Out's Justina Valentine have had those they and you at home know drop in for a visit on occasion... and we thought we'd like to share those times when Team MTV Takes Over How Far is Tattoo Far?.
For the one tattoo reveal that comes the mind for most of you who visit our site because of our wall-to-wall coverage of The Challenge, it's what happened when Cara Maria Sorbello and Paulie Califiore came onto the show in Season 1. Final Reckoning brought these two together as their roller-coaster relationship has divided us ever since, changing our perceptions of the 2-time champion and her new man from Big Brother & EOTB in the process.
So, it was no surprise that they came onto Tattoo Far to make their relationship more official by getting tattoos for one another and added more to their ongoing story. And the ink they gave each other immortalized his love for her, and her being that carefree lady.
It's no secret perhaps that if it weren't for her, than Kailah Casillas would not have seen her stock go up as one of Cara's biggest vendettas. Their rivalry brought Twitter into focus thanks to their feud which came to a head on both Dirty 30 and Vendettas, and helped drive the redhead out of the Twitter sphere and into a spot of being one of The Challenge's fiery personalities.
When Kailah walked into the Tattoo Far parlor, she had just gotten ejected from Final Reckoning for her fight with Melissa Reeves after that opening Purge. It was on the mind of her boyfriend at the time, Mikey P., who decided to remind her that if she wanted to keep going on The Challenge, she would always have a visual reminder - and influenced by what happened on Season 31 when she & other girls bullied Mel's vendetta Kayleigh Morris by tossing her luggage over the balcony.
Another Challenger who got sent home for bad behavior is Tony Raines, where a fight that didn't even involve punches getting thrown saw him & Camila Nakagawa get thrown out of Rivals III. But the most recent time we've seen Mr. #TonyTime was when he invited his girlfriend, Alyssa, on-stage at the Final Reckoning reunion, popped out an engagement ring, asked the question, and she got to say yes to his proposal question.
Tony & Alyssa joined the Tattoo Far fun also during Season 2, but the fiance had plans of a different kind for her man. Since they call home a place in the Sun Belt states where it always gets hot & humid from spring until late fall, he loves to wear foam clog shoes called Crocs, which has seen President Bush 43, Michelle Obama and William & Kate's son wear those shoes and has been a subject of ridicule. And Alyssa let him know about it...
And there's that fateful night in South Africa on Final Reckoning when Tony got into it with another dad aboard the bus over, of all things, food. That led to the demise of Cory Wharton when he came onto that season as a mercenary with Devin Walker... who just so happens to be the Rivals III partner of fellow AYTO Season 3'er Cheyenne Floyd, who shares custody of her daughter Ryder with Cory.
Cheyenne & Cory came onto Tattoo Far during Season 2, and knowing that he has been on what is now five MTV series over the course of six years, she thought of nothing else but to crown him the MTV King. But at the same time, he thought of recognizing the struggles she had in her first year as a mom raising Ryder, and it's likely you & us shed a tear when she saw her tattoo.
For a show hosted by one member of the Jersey Shore cast, it felt only natural and appropriate that Snooki & Nico would welcome Angelina Pivarnick & her then-fiance Chris as the inaugural guests to the parlor. Just after the one Pauly D. prank that changed history down in Miami, the couple who we will soon be seeing their big day unfold on the Family Vacation got each other tattoos, including one that epitomizes her status in the MTV Reality world.
For their Southern counterparts, the Floribama Shore crew came in from the heat to head onto both Season 1 and Season 2, as they got to find permanent souvenirs of their time in Florida on their bodies. Aimee & Nilsa were the first to join in, followed by Codi & Kirk the following year, as they got to immortalize who they are in ink... and have tears and laughs.
These four sets of castmates and three others with their significant others from three different MTV series have left us with plenty of moments that have left our jaws dropped and sometimes saw us laugh. But they are all not alone when it comes having had a chance to walk into the How Far is Tattoo Far parlor as someone who's done an MTV show before, and the last one has an indirect link to one of the aforementioned subjects above...
In December 2018, we focused on Cory's girl Taylor Selfridge being invited to Jake Paul's house to see who would be the last one standing in a pool full of Icy-Hot and ultimately winning $10,000 in being that girl. A person who was also in the pool that winter's night was Chad Tepper, a friend of Jake's who was on the first roster of his attempt to use his drawing power to lead a group of social media influencers known as Team 10. Jake has found it tough to in his two tries to create that supergroup, as he's been in a public relationship with fellow YouTuber Tana Mongeau thanks to her MTV No Filter YouTube series, and now is linked to AYTO alum Julia Rose.
Chad is also a friend of YouTube prankster, Indiana native Zach Holmes, and in 2018 they & their friends invited MTV to the Midwest for the prank series Too Stupid to Die, inspired by the channel's most controversial hit ever Jackass. The duo joined Nico and Justina on the season 2 finale last year, and let's say their choices sum up their wild nature... just another chapter in this wild series.
