Back in 2019, this site first zoomed in on the happenings of a popular restaurant located not far from the Sunset Strip and down the street from the headquarters of a firm that's been feeling the heat lately in the organizers of the Golden Globe Awards. SUR is one of the businesses owned by The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills' Lisa Vanderpump, which is best known as the location for one of the many spinoffs of Bravo's signature reality franchise.

In a way, Vanderpump Rules is perhaps bigger than the parent series itself in that, for eight seasons, it has followed just about everyone who has worked for Lisa at SUR or at the many other restaurants and businesses under either her watch or that of the other cast members, for whom they have such a solid following among reality TV fans and those in the social media realm. That includes Scheana Shay, who last week welcomed her first baby two years after sparking rumors that she would be the first in her cast to become a mom but later revealed that she was freezing her eggs before expecting, and during when she going through a divorce of her fiancĂ©.

Since it aired the finale of its eighth season aired 11 months ago, VPR has gone through a lot: not only has Scheana and the cast welcomed babies to their families and have tied the knot, the obvious situation we're still in because of the pandemic meant that the restaurant was shut down for an entire year... and during SUR's closure the series was also affected by the summer that changed everything in reality TV. And now after the long layoff, filming of Season 9 is now underway down in the Southland, with it to air on the NBC Universal-owned cable channel later this year.

And you might be wondering why we are covering this show in the first place once again after we first featured Scheana on here getting to host Jersey Shore's Ronnie Ortiz and MTV vet Kailah Casillas the night he had that IG live fight with his baby mama Jen Hurley... It's because of a few photos that popped up on the SUR Instagram page in the past week that gives us some wondering that the takeover of alumni of the reality shows we cover solely on here in MTV's lineup may stretch to the show that calls the restaurant its home. For the origin of this, you have to go back to around the time when this show was well into its second season.

When VPR was a cable sophomore in the winter of 2013-14, MTV was in a different place than it is now when scripted shows were airing during when Ronnie's crew was taking what turned out to be a five years' hiatus. But signs of what the future would hold for MTV came during that time...
Cory Wharton made his debut on Season 29 of The Real World, for which the twisted theme of exes coming to San Francisco inspired the global reality dating franchise Ex On The Beach, for which he would be part of its first American cast a few years later after competing on The Challenge and following one he met on the show, Cheyenne Floyd, to Teen Mom OG. Along with those, MTV also used the coveted spot of the timeslot following that show she would later join as its first person of color to be a main cast member on to launch a new kind of dating show.
Are You The One? made its debut the same month as Cory in January 2014 and brought the channel's familiar reality formula of hot faces, big time drama and high stakes to a reality dating genre that, during that time, was mainly the domain of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. What made MTV's first second entry into the modern romantic reality show craze (after the original A Shot at Love franchise with Tila Tequila) was that there was $1 million on the line... and it would only be achieved if everyone in the house -- as many as twenty-two singles -- align with their scientifically-proven perfect matches.
AYTO has brought into our MTV lexicon the Truth Booth which determines who and who isn't a match, the Boom Boom Room where the house's biggest action often goes down, and great alumni from future Challengers Devin, Nelson and Tori, to video vixen Nurys of Season 6, and Season 4's Julia Rose who's made her mark when it comes to showing off those goodies. And though there's been controversy lately surrounding on-set misconduct similar to what happened on Bachelor in Paradise, the show has produced true love in several couples who have stayed together long after the afterglow subsides.

One of those who lived with the show's ultimate perfect match of Amber & Ethan Diamond in the Season 1 house was Ryan Malaty, who came to AYTO from the suburbs of Denver looking for love and who had an eye for both science and even dressing up as Aladdin on occasion. His original bio read, "Ryan is a quirky, playful guy with exotically hot looks. His charisma and sweet demeanor are magnetic to every woman who comes into the restaurant where he works, but his relationship-oriented mind-set does not align with the younger women he is surrounded by. His grand romantic gestures tend to scare women away rather than establish the serious relationship he is looking for. He needs to come back down to earth to find the real girl who is right for him."
In the house along with working on his cherished diary full of poetic poems, Ryan found himself part of a love triangle with Southern belle Kayla Bertucci and Chicagoan Wes Buckles as she went on getaway dates with the both of them. In the end towards the sunset of their stay in paradise, the Truth Booth had the deciding say where, after two trips to the chamber of lasers, it was her and Wes that proved to be compatible in the end. When he reunited with the cast to celebrate the impending arrival of Amber & Ethan's first baby, we found that Ryan got himself in some drama shortly after the season ended when he and the resident hunk of the house, Adam Kuhn, roomed together only for that to fall apart just as it did for Gus and Jeremiah of Floribama Shore, though he gained a good friend of his in his crush, Brittany Baldi, who competed with Adam when they crossed over to The Challenge and Battle of the Exes 2.
And since he left the AYTO house, Ryan has become an actor on My Dead Ex and Reality High, as well as hosting shows for AfterBuzz TV including the after show for his favorite show, Game of Thrones.... and yes, he wore that Aladdin outfit when he went onto the game show Let's Make A Deal.

When Vanderpump Rules returns for its ninth season later this winter, viewers will be tuning into a totally different Pump Rules than when they did for the reunion for its eighth season last June. After being on hold for much of the past year, filming finally got underway earlier this month just as SUR and sister properties Pump and TomTom nearby have reopened following the year-long lockdown by orders by local and state governments, and abiding by health & safety guidelines at the restaurants and for production purposes.
For the most obvious alteration to the show since last summer's finale when drama around the various personalities clouded over the one-year anniversary of the TomTom operations, the dynamic of the cast changed in a flash during the summer of the Black Lives Matter upheaval. While MTV took action on some of its people for their past undoings, Pump Rules had its own: EOTB's Faith Stowers opened up to podcast interviews about the time original castmates Stassi Schroeder and Kristen Doute tipping a false police report on her and including racially insensitive language. That prompted Bravo and the team behind VPR (and The Hills New Beginnings) Evolution Media to send notice of termination letters to them and to recent cast members Max Boyens and Brett Caprioni for similar questionable behavior.
Shortly after, two more members of the VPR cast were also on their way out of the cameras when a duo at the heart of much of the drama in recent seasons of the show -- and for which Faith put herself in the buzz for her affair with him, Jax Taylor and wife Brittany Cartwright, also announced that they were also not returning (but on their own merit) after they got married and having also recently become parents in the arrival of their first kid last month. And after the departure of Season 8's Dayna Kathan, we're left with Lisa, Scheana, the Toms in Schwartz and Sandoval, Katie Maloney, Ariana Maddix, Lala Kent, James Kennedy and Raquel Leviss when they welcome back viewers to their world then... and had it not been for all of these changes, we would've been blessed with the many sights of babies running around all over the place.
And that includes Lala, who just became a mom herself... and she told New York Post's entertainment segment Page Six, "So many people have asked what can we expect this season and this is the first year that I can say I have no idea. A lot of time has passed, cast members who were key players that are no longer on the show and there has been a lot of things that have said and happened in the two-year period and now we’re getting together where we have to talk about these things. I don’t know what to expect, there are mommies now, babies in the mix. I will say that it’s going to be a different show but I think it’s going to be extremely entertaining."
And whenever this kind of upheaval happens at any reality show with a continuing cast, the result will no doubt see plenty of new faces to replace the now-departed former cast members... and that will be the case for Pump Rules Season 9. As it is always the case at the beginning of any new season of the show, plenty of new staffers from servers and waiters to those behind the walls will join the fold to add some spice to the drama taking place... and once there is a bit of clarity as to what might be worthy to make the show, the identities of those newbies will be revealed in due course. But there's this...

Ryan w/ Jasmine Goode, Peter Madrigal,
Raquel Leviss & other SUR workers
(Instagram @SURRules)
Those who visit SUR Restaurant's Instagram page at @SURRules are offered the many sights of this popular hangout spot on the outskirts of the Sunset Strip, near some of the biggest entertainment in the heart of Tinseltown, and near the heart of SoCal's LGBTQ+ community in West Hollywood. Go there on a particular weekend, and you'll likely find any of the aforementioned cast members still working there - or if you are lucky, you may even see the boss lady who oversees this empire in WeHo.
But two pictures came to our attention on the SUR feed that may suggest to us that the man who we saw dress up as that Disney character and then fell in love might be part of the next wave of newbies to join the SUR family, and return to television in a totally different environment than when he did sharing it with nineteen others in a legendary group of originals. And if having to look for his perfect match was something back then, then this is a totally different kind of environment Ryan will find himself in not only serving those who come to the restaurant every night for a bite, but also perhaps get put right into the drama that happens with the various characters of Vanderpump Rules as it always does when the cameras are around.
And in an interesting twist to all this - and one that will bring this crossover full circle, one of them featured Jasmine Goode of The Bachelor and Bachelor in Paradise, who was also on Faith's Ex On The Beach season in Hawaii (and at the same mansion where Justin Bieber stayed at as did global pop group Now United) along with fellow alum of her show Chase McNary, Cory, Taylor Selfridge, Angela Babicz, Paulie Calafiore and a lady who just announced her own pregnancy on this Mother's Day Sunday, AYTO 5's Alicia Wright.

For now, we will treat this as just rumors and speculation, and we won't know if Ryan will be a part of Vanderpump Rules until Bravo makes it official of who will be joining Lisa and the crew for Season 9 when premiere time comes around. And though some of those passionate fans might not be feeling the vibes early on of the early previews of what they'll be seeing later this year despite Scheana welcoming her new kid, if Mr. Aladdin joins the crew at SUR -- everyone who followed him on that quest for love will be watching again, including this fan. We are already digging this AYTO/VPR crossover.
