Hello and welcome to this Special Edition of DC SocialPulse with me, DC Cueva. It's with a heavy heart and a sense of sadness that we bring you this post as we celebrate the life of a brave and inspirational member of the MTV family who touched so many beyond the channel's airwaves.
Diem Brown, seven-time competitor on The Challenge, passed away at the age of 32 Friday morning at 10:32 AM ET - the same exact time she was born back on June 12, 1982, surrounded by family and friends in New York City after battling ovarian cancer for a third time and losing after two previously successful bouts against it. Words simply cannot express how all of us, both the entire MTV community and viewers & fans such as myself who got to know and watch Diem Brown over the years, have been feeling over the course of this weekend.
Diem made her MTV debut in 2006 on The Challenge: Fresh Meat as the energetic and courageous "army brat" from the northern Atlanta suburb of Roswell, GA, who joined what was then a Real World vs. Road Rules team competition as a brand-new competitor who didn't appear on either show. It was there that she first revealed, on-camera, that she had ovarian cancer, and over the years her cancer battle was well-documented, both on the show and outside of The Challenge house. The first two times, both after Fresh Meat and then after six years later on Battle of the Exes, she went into chemotherapy, fought back and won both times. For this third time, though, the cancer that was found in her stomach and colon when she was flown home from being overseas in August would ultimately spread to her live and lymph nodes. And though she would lose this fight after numerous surgeries and treatment, she certainly fought right to the very end.
Off-camera during her eight-year battle, Diem became both an advocate and an inspiration for those who can relate to her as someone who has fought a brave battle, which inspired her to found the support registry site MedGift. Today, with its many support pages and resources being offered to those going through any medical or health experience and how to deal with it in any way possible, that site has become the legacy she leaves behind. She also served as an ambassador for Stand Up to Cancer, the entertainment industry's cancer awareness initiative and attended its 2012 edition.
Coming up here, we'll showcase tweets and posts from, of course, the entire MTV family plus fans as they offer reflection and memories of Diem. And after all that, I'll offer my perspective on her, the career she had on The Challenge, the impact of both her and her passing, and how it runs parallel to another event that touched the MTV community twenty years ago. And at the end of this article, we'll invite you the opportunity to share your thoughts and reflections.

The first thing you notice about her is her smile and that shes one of those rare people who just seem pure and beautifully innocent from one glance. The 6 years I have known her since proved that passing thought wrong a million times over. She had her own foundations to support but when @cohuttalee and I wanted to do some socially responsible work for ALS she was the first to call back and help however she could, she checked up regularly to see how we were doing and offered every contact and word of advice she could. DC's VIEW: Diem Brown - Reflection on a Warrior
As I wrote here before, it was only a couple years ago that I started to take up following MTV's The Challenge after a few years away from it, and it was just with Rivals II last year that I saw Diem for the first time. Though I had some familiarity with her, it was when I first got to really know her well in the lead-up to that season in Thailand.
As I wrote in my cast memories post during that summer of 2013, it took until watching a mini-doc on YouTube on her charity MedGift where I saw my first footage of her from a previous Challenge. That documentary, which can be viewed here, included that moment when she told her partner, Derrick Kosinski, that she had ovarian cancer and surprised both the cast and show producers. That diagnosis took place only three weeks before beginning that Challenge and kept it a secret to just her family until that moment, and there was some uncertainty about whether she would take part or not, but ultimately decided to compete.
After that season, she went through six months of chemotherapy and the emotionally tough process that came along with it. When she beat cancer for the first time, she then went onto The Duel in Brazil, and in a moment the MTV Show Blog calls "perhaps the most memorable moment in Challenge history" at a mission called "Ring Toss," she reluctantly took off her bandana and wig to reveal the bald head she had kept a secret to everyone. When she was finally able to compete, not only did she compete but also performed her absolute best and came out with the win. Everyone praised her for gutting it out, and all her fellow Fresh Meat alum Evan could say after seeing that was, "It was the most inspiring, beautiful moment that I've ever witnessed in my entire life. It was a straight-up inspiration to everyone."
It was there in Brazil that Diem would meet CT for the very first time and they clicked right from the moment they met, launching one of MTV's most-beloved relationships, though when she competed again on The Duel II in New Zealand, trust issues with CT hooking up with other girls drove them apart. She took a three-year break to launch the MedGift site and pursue entertainment reporting before returning for Battle of the Exes. She & CT renewed their love affair and became stronger than ever and they went all the way to the final. And although they would come up short in a final where they were sentimental favorites, Diem was able to make the daunting climb to the top of a mountain in speedy fashion and earned that day's top performance that was worthy of the jackpot.
And then after that Challenge aired, her cancer returned and once again she went through the process of going into surgery, shaving her hair and the chemotherapy that had so many fans worried about her health. But of course, she would beat ovarian cancer for a second time and it was to the relief of all of her fans. It was shortly after remission that she returned to Thailand for Rivals II and renewed acquaintances with Aneesa, who had a beef with her back on The Duel. They made it all the way to the last elimination and although they would fall short, Diem had certainly become the favorite of the casual viewer who might not have known about the other people in the house. The moment at the end of episode 4 of her dancing by herself is the moment I most remember of her.
Aside from pro wrestler Mike the Miz, Diem had more twitter followers of anyone in the Real World/Challenge community, even exceeding TJ Lavin. At the time of me posting my memories post during Rivals II, she was at 133,000 followers and in the hours since her passing, it reached 197,000 and it will sure reach 200,000 in days time. And the legacy she leaves behind is MedGift, which will also certainly garner a great amount of support in honor of Diem.

The events of what happened on Friday runs in almost exact parallel with another event that deeply touched at the heart of TV's longest-running reality franchise. Twenty years and three days before Diem's passing, the world mourned the death of Pedro Zamora, the roommate on Real World San Francisco who was diagnosed with AIDS and an advocate who inspired many in his courageous battle before passing away hours after the season finale on November 11, 1994. The passing of both people have had the same kind of impact: both battled deadly diseases, garnered a tremendous amount of public support from the wider public during their battle, and had an even-greater outpouring of compassion and sorrow when they passed away.
If you're a member of Team MTV who might be reading this post, you now have people who can relate to you in the ones who preceded you and paved the way for the reality TV road you all are on now. Simply ask the first generation of Real World castmates - including Heather B., Kevin, Tami, Rachel Campos and the couple of Judd & Pam Winick, and they'll tell you where they were when they found out that Pedro died. The reaction to Diem's passing that we've shown to you above - inside the Real World/Challenge bubble and outside of it - has been immediate, widespread and heartfelt. Usually, this community - the largest by far in Team MTV - is one that can be described as one dysfunctional family where some are friends, some are enemies and some are in the middle. But when you get to the very heart of it, this fraternity, with over 200 people in its coast-to-coast community and featuring people who were strangers one time who had never even met or worked together before doing these shows, has a bond that is just as strong as family and childhood & college friends in their inner circles. And Diem's passing has brought them all even closer together in a way we've not seen before in this age of social media, and not in an overall sense among the MTV/BMP family since the events of twenty years ago.
On Friday and during this weekend, all of the castmates have taken time, and in some cases dropped their tension, to celebrate Diem and her life. The vast majority of the nearly 200-strong RW/Challenge community on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, plus those from my new favorite show Are You The One?, Jersey Shore and other MTV shows who might've crossed paths with her, and of course fans, viewers and distinguished people, shared their grief and reflected on their memories of Diem. From seeing one of the twitter accounts of one of those castmates who follow me, they even set aside a twitter beef that took place during The Challenge: Free Agents earlier this year and even re-tweeted a post from the person they were feuding with. And another who was also at odds with that person during one of their seasons also re-tweeted a post from them. Those signs of solidarity represent how united this entire tight-knit family has been since the moment Diem passed away.
And of course for me as a fan of the Real World/Challenge franchise almost since the beginning and someone who's developed a very strong rapport with a lot of the people both inside and outside the bubble - especially when a lot of the cast left me birthday wishes the day before, this has hit me hard. While there have been deaths in the MTV family since 1994, none have had a great impact on me than Diem. I had interacted with her a good amount on social media in the past year, from talking to her a few times to her liking several of my posts on both Twitter and Instagram. When I first found out about the news at lunchtime, my jaw dropped and, I will admit, I nearly shed a tear, though I was still shocked and sad while still maintaining my composure. It was one of those moments that, as a longtime MTV fan since back in high school 15 years ago, really had a great impact on me.
As I wrote on my Instagram when I posted pictures of both of my family dogs and when my family gathered to say goodbye to who we all call Nanay, it's on days such as the one the MTV family experienced on Friday, November 14, 2014 that everything is put into perspective, and to come to the realization that there are some things that are bigger than others. And on that short list of those things that should always be given first priority, family is always on there.
What has happened in the past few days has been unlike what I've seen and experienced in a long time. The Real World and Challenge family, as well as those outside of the bubble and fans like us, has had plenty of time since Friday morning to reflect and celebrate the life of their fallen comrade who fought a courageous battle and never gave up until the very end. And as many have written above, Diem Brown has become their definition of a warrior and a fighter.
In my Rivals II postseason awards, there was no question who I would give the honor of Heart of a Lion to. Diem was the one in Thailand who didn't give up and was able to overcome adversity to perform her absolute best. With her great recovery from surviving ovarian cancer for a second time before flying to Asia, she was the one who brought that great number of casual viewers who didn't know who CT or others on the cast were to that great Challenge season and was the sentimental favorite of everyone that summer. Even after the heartbreaking loss in the last elimination jungle and missing out on the money, she was already a winner in everyone's eyes simply because of the journey she endured of going to the Exes final, being diagnosed, beating cancer and making a deep run to get there, and regardless of what happened in the house, gaining everyone's respect and great support.
Diem will be to this generation of fans of The Real World & The Challenge what Pedro Zamora was to the first generation of those who grew up with the show many years ago: a great person who took advantage of living her life to its fullest, fought a courageous battle with so many people supporting her and, though passing away too soon, having & leaving behind an enduring & ever-lasting impact that transcended a reality TV franchise airing on a relatively-young cable TV channel targeted primarily to teens and young adults.
