Welcome to DC BDAY Week - this week I will turn 31...yep I'm old. This is the 10th year that I'm celebrating it in the social world - I joined MySpace on my 22nd bday in 2005, and this Thursday will be the 3rd birthday that I will be sharing with the twitter world too.
To kick off DC BDAY Week, we have episode 6 of Are You The One? II in Puerto Rico. It's been an eventful season to say the least, and it's only the halfway point...there's still a lot left. To prep you for tonight's activities, we will recap last week's episode 5, where after Team 21 had received the most brutal hand the show has given yet, we saw another perfect match in as many weeks. It also meant the end to a budding relationship that was also confirmed as a non-match previously, as well as revisiting a scenario that we saw last season in Hawaii. Besides that, there's also a key moment in one of the love triangles that has formed in the house, and we'll find out if the group's chances can improve after receiving no new matches the previous week.

And after theWRAP, we'll tell you which castmate from this season was on MTV well before we saw them in Puerto Rico, as well as look ahead to the week and month ahead here. That's all ahead after the jump.

Obviously, what happened last week was something that came out of the blue for Team 21, who witnessed a roller coaster of emotions in just a few days. First, they had a fun challenge, then some of them literally flew above water. They then celebrated their first perfect match in Paris & Pratt, then suddenly dealt with despair when they received no lights at the ensuing matchup ceremony, which singlehandedly broke up numerous potential perfect matches and completely changed the game.
We began the episode with the group still reeling from that brutal hand when they try to focus in on the clues that the light beams revealed to them. This takes place all amidst Jessica crying and hurting the censor's thumbs from hitting that button so many ties, Curtis walking away in shock and Briana comforting Jessica instead of dealing with her emotions. Layton chimes in to the "stay strong Jessica" words in telling her to be determined and strong-willed and also to be strong in moving on from him. And then, Big Country goes on the rebound and focused back in on Jenni. And for Brandon and Christina, they express some sympathy over the fact that more of their housemates will now take for granted what they've been gone through.

Happily, if you're Pratt and Paris, you didn't have to worry about being angry or other emotions provoked by that match-up as they would move into their honeymoon suite. It includes all those amenities we would find in a gorgeous luxury hotel: a courtyard pool, beds both indoor and outside next to that body of water, an outdoor shower and access to the beach. Obviously, P&P will be living the life in private while everyone else is back in the mansion continuing to find their match and trying to rip each other's heads off. And while Paris is in nothing but heaven, Pratt spending time with her is priceless...and he's planning where to bang too.
One of my winners of the night from my EP5 DCSP post was Curtis, in which he's been giving those in the house, and those in the twitter world, some great words of inspiration and encouragement in a house that is in desperate need for a morale boost in the house. In this case, he summed up the vibe in the house after that matchup in reply to what Jessica has been through in this way: "Step the ... up. Strap those boots tight. Let's move forward. We got another challenge." From the twitter world, he got a lot of praise from all of those followers and gained greater respect from me & fans too.
This week's getaway challenge has the guys (minus a sick Alex) hooked up to a rope and a giant metal ring. The objective is to grab a gold coin from their individual treasure chest in an eight-way tug-of-war to grab those three podium spots to head off on the getaway. This has echoes of the tug of war elimination that we saw during The Challenge: Free Agents, and for those who watch the so-called 5th major sport - including my colleagues Andrew Kirk & Brian Cohen, we looked at this challenge as a Challenge combine of sorts. In the end, Dario, Curtis and Brandon emerge victorious. Despite Ashley wanting him as his date, top finisher Dario instead chooses Jenni; 2nd place Curtis picks Shelby and bronze medalist Brandon goes with Jasmine.
Back home, John decides to go for Jenni, and Anthony gets next to her just as the law student and "porcelain in a tea cup" hang out. With nothing much to do, the group has a drinking/kissing game, and Ellie gets upset when he spots Anthony kissing other girls. This leads her to dramatically walk off after seeing Christina and Alexandria lock lips with the fella. When Ant tries to talk to her, Ellie tells him of being tired of being called his "home girl," and he replies "I like you as a person" than being a toy. She responds, "I don't want to be your friend. It hurts my feelings how you do me." Some codes of the Friend Zone was broken as he tries to get with her.
The reward for Dario, Jenni, Curtis, Shelby, Brandon and Jasmine winning the Getaway Date is enjoying a day at the natural rock waterslide Las Paylas, a popular summer tourist attraction and them having fun on there. There, Brandon and Jasmine talk and share something in common: both of their parents are divorced and they feel it might be why they "suck at relationships." During their candid talk, Brandon figures the only way she can be her perfect match is to kiss her. Jasmine rejects him and adds that she's sticking to the promise she set to Christina of not causing any more drama. Meanwhile, Shelby feels her and Curtis' date turns out to be a very good one, perhaps a perfect one too. Curtis, on the other hand, still has thoughts about Briana the whole time while on the slide.
When the group gathers in the living room for the Truth Booth session, the Brandon becomes the focus yet again. He continues to tell everyone that he feels Jasmine is his match and that he's now over Christina. She calls him out on the findings of the Brandon B.S.-o-Meter, but after they have it out in the hallway on the side from the living room, the follow-through doesn't turn out the right results as his tune changes considerably at the Matchup. And for Christina, that's not the end of her story in this edition as we'll explain more after theWRAP.
When we get to the reason Team 19 are gathered with R-Dev (that's my nickname I give to Ryan Devlin if you don't know), it's for that Truth Booth. Instead of them choosing Brandon & Jasmine, the group picks Curtis & Shelby to go into the room that changes everything. In a moment that came totally out of left field, or out of the warehouse at Petco Park in his San Diego digs, they find out that they are the 2nd perfect match. For the second week in a row and in a carbon copy of the 2nd one from last year, the group celebrates with everyone cheering except Briana. She could only sit stunned by the decision and has a couple girls consoling her. Unlike what happened to Shanley when she dealt with Chris T. & Paige being a match and her going after Simone, Bri handled this heartbreak very well. Meanwhile, Curtis feels some sadness and, "Walking back into the house, I have mixed emotions." And Christina & Curtis are a no match; 11th girl stays.
They popped champagne to say so long to Pratt & Paris last week; this week Ellie decides to put some shampoo in the hot tub for a bubble bath. While the others are enjoying the bubbles and having a cold one, Curtana finally find a moment to themselves. Curtis believes "the reveal is like a dagger to the heart," and Briana agrees, "My heart hurts." In his confessional, he admits that he loves her, and they decide to make a pact to keep their feelings in tact by giving him his beads, aka the AYTO version of a promise ring. And Briana & Curtis head off into the Boom Boom Room, and share one more goodbye kiss before he & Shelby join P & P in the honeymoon suites. And while Ellie and Layton are enjoying the bubbles, another imperfect match shacks up in bed: Jenni & Anthony.
To the beams, and at what is supposed to be an optimistic Matchup Ceremony has become a dramatic one lately; take what happened last week. This week turns out to be a contentious one full of heated discussion. First off, when he sticks to Jasmine as his match, Brandon decides to flip the script by reaffirming his commitment to Christina, and gets a roasting by his housemates in response. Showing that same strong-willed mentality as what happened at the beginning of the episode, Jessica decides to call him out: "Save what you want for after the show." Everyone else chimes in and uses this as a screaming match to him. Poor Brandon.
Meanwhile, Jenni decides to spill the beans in sharing some rather intimate hookup information in her telling Layton at the patio of her having kissed Anthony. Before Layton talks about Jenni & Ant's escapades, Jenni tells R-Dev "I have him head" when Anthony is at the podium and ending up choosing Ashley over Ellie. And even Paris also decides to join in in claiming Jess & Layton are doing what Brandon & Christina have been doing all along. In other pairings, G goes with Tyler, John chooses Jenni, Layton picks Briana, Alex chooses Christina, Nathan's with Jessica and Dario picks Alexandria and Ellie is excluded.
So what happened at the matchup? They improved upon last week in not only getting another perfect match, but also one additional light for a total of 3 matches - two confirmed. Yep, with the group having exhausted half of their chances at the cash, and being nowhere near where they should be right now, it's about time for them to enter damage control as they cross the halfway mark and Shelby sheds a tear over a perfect match which seems to not be perfectly aligned with her, for now.
Being at 3 now, Team 21 is well off the mark set by the Originals where they notched 5 matches at week 5. It will take something miraculous for Team 21 in the 2nd half for them to pull this one off, and let's hope they can make something happen before it gets too late. Perhaps, just as it was in Hawaii, there could be one event coming up, perhaps as soon as tonight, that could break open the bank for Team 21.

A 2ND SHOT FOR THE 11th GIRL
Now, in a few posts here, we've talked about a number of members of Team MTV popping up on other reality shows prior to their mainstream breakthrough. Brittany and Scali from Season 1 tried their luck at landing love on the 2012 Fox dating show The Choice, while the Brooklynite also cameoed on My Super Sweet 16 and an Oxygen show. Nia from Real World Portland also appeared on The Choice as well before being called in to replace Joi in Oregon. Jonna of RW Cancun and The Challenge, who celebrates her birthday today, won the 1st season of Discovery Hub's competition show Endurance, while Briana of RW Hollywood was an American Idol semifinalist.
There's two groups of people who we can thank for having this second season of Are You The One?: the Season 1 Originals and four girls who enjoy the luxury, or the infamy depending upon who you ask, of currently being MTV's most-scrutinized cast for whom their everyday moves are regular fodder of the tabloids and the gossip sites. As we all know, the first season aired after Teen Mom 2, and over the weekend we found that for one of these castmates, AYTO2 isn't their first time on MTV, and that first time on the airwaves was within the confines of that show.
If you're a regular DCBLOG visitor, then you know that we've covered the numerous reunions and after shows for Real World, The Challenge and Are You The One? for our Fan's View series. Well before she became the 11th girl in Puerto Rico, Christina first appeared on MTV as a fan, just like all of us. And over the weekend, one of her fans, @KatieCooley86, posted a twitter pic of Christina in the audience during the season 2 reunion for Chelsea, Jenelle, Leah and Kailyn a couple years ago.
Christina is one of those lucky people who was picked to be in the audience to watch one of the reunions in person - though it's for a show outside of that trifecta. And not only did she appear on camera, she also got to ask a question to the moms as well. She can directly relate to the subjects I've talked to that know about sitting in that chair for very long in taping a reunion and watching it in its raw form. This echoes what happened to Hilary Burton, who went from being picked from the crowd during 2000 VMA week to go to the TRL studio, to hosting the big show and ultimately land a starring role on One Tree Hill. The picture of Christina at the reunion is at the bottom of this post.
Christina's not the only new member of Team MTV to come full circle and become a castmate on a show after making a previous appearance on the channel. David, that lovable gentile giant from Virgin Territory, had worked with MTV several times on a few projects before being casted on the show and having many a fun dates in Utah. By the way on a side note, congrats to him on the amazing changes he's made since the show ended where he's lost a lot of weight and now is in great shape as a totally new fella than the one we saw during the summer. Much respect Big Dave.
Well, that's it for theWRAP of episode 5 of Are You The One? Season 2 from Puerto Rico ahead of tonight's episode 6. And if the promos have it, we've got another huge episode to look forward to as tensions are about to boil with only 5 chances to pull off what is seemingly impossible but is still a possibility. That all happens in only hours from now and to follow the live tweeting of it all - if you're out west, be sure to join me at 10PM PT at my live twitter home, DCNOW at @DC408DxNow.
A busy month is ahead for me on DCNOW where in addition to AYTO, the hilarious series Slednecks and Retro Night featuring past Real World seasons, my November live tweet slate will also include the American Music Awards, Thanksgiving football, Manny Pacquiao's fight vs. Chris Algieri and much more. And if things fall into place, I may be emulating a live tweet session on-site from one of those events. Stay tuned to my social networks for details on that and more, and if I do get the chance to be there at one of those events, look out for me on TV.
