Welcome to DC SocialPulse on DCBLOG, and to twitter's blow-by-blow diary of episode 6 of Are You The One? Season 2. Things have been heating up in Puerto Rico in the past few episodes, and no wonder why for many, this is probably the best reality show you've not seen yet. And of course, it's a recommendation by me to binge-watch, or at least sample, both this season and the first one.
Last week, the group hyped episode 6 as the best one yet, and it definitely delivered. Their parents came to visit their kids and question the guys with the girls finding out new things about them. We saw tensions build, especially the guys where Anthony & Layton had the season's biggest fight, as well as both Jenni & Jessica in the house and Briana & Paris on twitter. And for the 2nd time in 3 weeks, the group dealt with getting no lights at the matchup ceremony, putting their chances at the $1 million in serious doubt.
This week sees the group get yet another fresh start in the aftermath of blackout #2. A new couple emerges when the resident law student clicks with the house's resident nurse. One of the girls is the latest in the house to get involved in a love triangle, while another finds himself in deep trouble by sleeping with yet another woman. With echoes of the famous white party the Originals had in Kauai, Team 21 lets loose on a party bus and on the beach. And after all that they have been through, this week sees the group finally make a major step towards making a big turnaround.
And after the twitter view of episode 7 and aftermath, I'll offer some my view on the strategy the group has been using this season. And we'll begin our countdown to Real World Season 30 as a Skeleton of one of the new roommates meets two members of one of MTV's most popular shows and something that binds those two.

So this week, there's a new couple to salute in Jenni and John, who become the 3rd couple to join the honeymoon suite as a confirmed perfect match, not to mention a fantastic date in the downtown tub and giving Shelby a much-needed friend in the villas. There's a new love triangle in Ashley setting her sights first on Dario and then to Layton. There's Christina & Nate, Tyler & G - plenty of new hookups...and the Brandon & Christina show continues with him going out of his mind in the ocean and on the patio.
And finally, there's something not only to cheer about but a great deal of optimism in the house as the group has escaped turbulence by not only garnering perfect match #3, but also notching 6 matches at the matchup, doubling their previous high output. Now, we're getting into the business end of the season where it's now make or break time, but there's at last a reason to be happy if you're in Puerto Rico.

DC's VIEW: The Strategy Room
Now, let's head into The Strategy Room for my view on the strategy part of the game, which has been a key storyline this season. As I wrote about a few weeks ago, the group has been playing a poor game as a team, and they definitely needed a change in both their strategy and their mentality when it comes to choosing their matches. As we saw at the end of episode 6 last week, it was very obvious: the group is in dire need of making something happen in the matchup department and in the quest for the prize they came to Puerto Rico in the first place: $1 million. And having had two matchup ceremonies that went beam-less in the past three weeks - and even with having two perfect matches in the truth booth going into this week, something had to be done right there or it will be too late.
As me and Andrew Kirk talked about on twitter after episode 6 aired and later on AK's Google+ Wrap, something that caught our attention was their really crummy strategy of planning to choose with their heads rather than their hearts, but still they haven't gotten hold of that fact until this week in still not following through on that. The group is still not taking the opportunity to do some in-depth strategizing the way the Season 1 cast did in their road to the million. And also, is there anyone on this cast who is keeping track of who is paired up in the challenges, truth booths and matchups? There's not much visual evidence this season of who's keeping an eye out on those.
Some of the people were still hanging out with the ones they weren't confirmed matches and decided to choose random people rather than ones they thought would be the one. Last week, as was pointed out by some in the diary, instead of choosing a potential good pair like Dario & Briana, they chose a random one in Jasmine & John and that was a no match. And the group not only hung out with their first no-matches, they all chose some of the same people that they considered their 2nd choice, which of course led to that 2nd blackout. And of course, we saw a lot of in-fighting among the group in not strategizing this game in the way that they should.

Along with them having a great strategy of playing together that ultimately brought them to the title, the Season 1 Originals also benefited from getting some help from production. After the fourth MC in Kauai where they were in dire trouble after two straight 2-lights, production gave them some lifelines to help cheer them up. They were given two truth booth chances the next week, and when they converted the 2nd try for their first perfect match in Dillan & Coleysia, they were off & running and never looked back with no drop in matches the rest of the way. And along with later choosing any house couple rather than just getaway challenge winners one week and only Dre picking what was the last truth booth pair that untied the Scali/Jacy/John triangle, it helped put them over the top.
After watching EP6, I felt that production should give Team 21 the kind of help that propelled season 1 to its win and also to help boost house morale, in addition to coming up with something new in their strategy. As it turned out, what was about to happen the very next week may turn out in the end to be the turning point.
Now, to that next week and to what we saw in this episode, and there was Brandon calling out the house for making bad moves and suggests that everyone make track of who's all paired up, even with him getting put on blast by Briana for his degree experience. Then at the getaway challenge, R-Dev tells the group to choose their partners wisely, and Tyler decides to take one for the team and no participate with the hope that a strong couple could get voted in and become a perfect match.
Then after the getaway date and the beach party where Jenni & John enjoyed themselves and saw Alex & Jasmine, Christina & Nate and Tyler & G get it on and the the Jess-Layton-Ashley triangle erupt, there was the question of who to put in the truth booth. The debate was of whether to put in Jenni & John, the winning couple, or go with Alex and Alexandria with the feeling that she could be the double match that sends Christina home. During that deliberation, we saw again that recipe for disaster of whether to put the best one in, or try to make the game easier in bringing Christina home.
Briana and Tyler led the side that went for J & J to go into the Booth and, in the end, that won them the vote of the house and of the fans on twitter, and that also meant that because he was a no-match to the 11th girl, Christina will stay regardless. Because of seeing them really making a very good connection and then on their Date, they made the right choice of putting the getaway winners Jenni and John in, and it became perfect match #3.
And as they prepare to go into matchup #7, Bri also figures out that the matches from the 5th MC of two weeks earlier are now invalid, which voids her & Layton, Dario/Alexandria, Brandon/Jasmine, Tyler/G, Ant/Ash, Nate/Jess and Alex/Christina. So, give Bri credit in now becoming the matchmaker and the tracker for the group. That adds to what's been a really strong season for her that I might as well make her my winner of the night for EP7 on Monday...stay tuned.
And in the span of one week, their fortune has made a complete 180: first six weeks they were nowhere in the match department and had endured two blackouts. Now at the 7th, try they have six matches, just about on the same pace as Season 1 who had one more at 7, but still a great improvement. Their odds have significantly improved - and in fact have been slashed in half - from 50-1 to start this week off to now in the 30-1 to 25-1 range. If they get an improvement in the matches and get a 4th perfect match next week, it'll go down to the 15-1 to 10-1. And perhaps they could go to 5-1 and lower if it gets tense in the late rounds, perhaps that could move earlier to Episode 9 if the number gets to 8.
And if they happened to have seen season 1, they can take a page from the playbook of the Originals of trying to figure out who the potential matches are and to keep them paired up in every challenge and ceremony and figure out who those non-matches and see who to choose from. Plus there's Christina and whether to put her in or not to try to get her or the other double match out, which is a very big task. I do agree with Brian Cohen, there's a lot left to be done, but the task is now a much easier than it was going into this week.
From having talked to just about all of them since late August and becoming great friends with them since, it's been my hope that Team 21 would follow in the footsteps laid down by their predecessors in Hawaii. And considering the odds that have been stacked against them in the first six weeks, if they can run the table, get this one done and go 10 for 10, this will be one of the greatest comebacks that I have ever seen as someone who lives for watching competition as a lifelong sports fan.
This will be the equivalent to a team coming back from a 10-point halftime deficit to win the Super Bowl, which of course has never happened in NFL history. And what we've seen here in Puerto Rico is the equivalent of a fighter being knocked down two times and on the verge of losing his title, in having seen the two blackouts and low number in the first 3-5th's of this season. But not only have they survived the round, they now are back up and fighting hard. And if they get the inspiration to possibly make this impossible dream a reality and ride this wave to the cash, the great year I've had here in the social media world will get even better and redefine the word "believe" in my dictionary.
Just a couple weeks ago, I would've told fans that Team 21 has a really long-shot of pulling off this task of winning $1 million when they got two no-matches. Now with six lights, they've got not only something to shoot at, but also starting to gain the kind of momentum that the Originals got on their way to their place in history. And though it's still a big task ahead of them, the cash is now more of a possibility than ever. It's just a matter now of executing the right gameplan and the right strategy for 20 people to have a very grand holiday season with $50,000 checks under their Christmas trees.
From having talked to just about all of them since late August and becoming great friends with them since, it's been my hope that Team 21 would follow in the footsteps laid down by their predecessors in Hawaii. And considering the odds that have been stacked against them in the first six weeks, if they can run the table, get this one done and go 10 for 10, this will be one of the greatest comebacks that I have ever seen as someone who lives for watching competition as a lifelong sports fan.
This will be the equivalent to a team coming back from a 10-point halftime deficit to win the Super Bowl, which of course has never happened in NFL history. And what we've seen here in Puerto Rico is the equivalent of a fighter being knocked down two times and on the verge of losing his title, in having seen the two blackouts and low number in the first 3-5th's of this season. But not only have they survived the round, they now are back up and fighting hard. And if they get the inspiration to possibly make this impossible dream a reality and ride this wave to the cash, the great year I've had here in the social media world will get even better and redefine the word "believe" in my dictionary.
Just a couple weeks ago, I would've told fans that Team 21 has a really long-shot of pulling off this task of winning $1 million when they got two no-matches. Now with six lights, they've got not only something to shoot at, but also starting to gain the kind of momentum that the Originals got on their way to their place in history. And though it's still a big task ahead of them, the cash is now more of a possibility than ever. It's just a matter now of executing the right gameplan and the right strategy for 20 people to have a very grand holiday season with $50,000 checks under their Christmas trees.
Jersey Shore Meets RW Skeletons
Now, we haven't talked much here on DCBLOG about the most-famous MTV show of recent times, the pop culture phenomenon known as Jersey Shore. Believe it or not, next month will be the 5th anniversary of the show that helped revitalize MTV and, as I always like to say, oh how can say time can fly by so fast when you're having fun. Why did I bring up this show? Well, two reasons...
While the new season of Snooki & J-Woww is underway as the duo has just celebrated a new baby last night, Mike the Situation having tax elation charges tossed out after season 1 of The Sorrentinos on TV Guide Network, Sammi & Ronnie breaking up again earlier this year, Pauly D continuing to do his DJ thing in Vegas and Vinny celebrating a birthday last week with a new book, you might ask "What about Angelina and Deena?" As you know, Angelina was the original 8th roommate in the Shore House but didn't spend much time there in Jersey, but ultimately made her mark when the group descended upon Miami for season 2. And when she left permanently after that after causing lots of drama with the OG's, Snooki brought Ms. Blast in a Glass along for season 3 and brought a spirit of fun to the cast that wasn't the case for what Danny, the Shore Store owner calls "Jolie."
While I'm not into VH1 that much, Angelina and Deena have kept themselves in the Viacom family by doing seasons of Couples Therapy, where we also saw the end of the 2nd stint of Heather & Dustin from Real World Vegas XXV. Last Tuesday before the season 5 finale, they, Deena's boyfriend Chris, Angelina's guy and Treach of Naughty by Nature fame got together with the show's host Dr. Jenn Berman to do a segment for Sirius XM Radio. Later that night, they headed to an after party and met up with Big Brother alums Gina Marie from season 15 and Caleb from last season, along with other reality personalities.
One who was part of the festivities was the brother of roommate Bruno from the upcoming season of Real World Skeletons, Briah. Four weeks from now will be the season premiere of the show's 30th season taking place in Chicago, and Briah is Bruno's estranged twin brother. The Providence, RI natives have not talked to each other in three years since a huge falling out and a trivial fight where Briah told Bruno that he wished he had been killed in a car accident that nearly cost him his life. As his "skeleton," Briah entering the house will force him and Bruno to meet the problems right there head on, which along with the stories of the other roommates, should make for compelling television.
Just as was the case when we talked about Heather & Dustin's roommates Adam & Nany burying the hatchet when Mike Mike tied the knot, I'm not that all surprised that now Angelina and Deena are not only civil but also feeling like sisters. Obviously, Jersey Shore was a phenomenon that emerged from a rough beginning where it got a ton of hate before the show even started and then early on (similar to what we've seen with Buckwild and Slednecks). But them and the cast would ultimately click with everyone and they would become one of MTV's most beloved casts. And as the show marks its 5th anniversary next month, there's a lot to be proud of and lots to look back on. And we all might imagine if Angelina decided to return during that last season in Seaside Heights and see the dynamic she has and also of making peace with everyone.
By the way, a slice of Staten Island, and of course that thick accent, will also be part of the upcoming Real World as well as Nicole, a EMT and a single lesbian, will join Bruno, Jason, Madison, Sylvia, Tony and Violetta in the Windy City, following in the footsteps of Marie of RW St. Thomas and Angelina and Vinny onto the MTV airwaves, not to mention Gina from Big Brother. We'll preview RW Skeletons and provide plenty of perspective and reflection during the lead-up to its December 16th premiere right here on the 'Blog.
