Last week, Melbourne, Australia welcomed seven fan favorite couples from AYTO's first four seasons plus three jet-lagged couples straight off the plane from the Caribbean (with a stop in LA for the reunion) as they all began the quest for who is the ultimate perfect match. There was a familiar sight in Devin winning something on these shows, as he and Rashida outlasted all the other couples in their quest to get to the house first. And along with the usual "get to know you", we saw the revealing of the twists to this season including The Choice.
This week, the nine remaining couples (Derrick & Casandra were eliminated last week) are put to the test when they must figure out how to be a caregiver and to take a cast off of their partners. For one perfect match, one of them snaps when her partner's interest in pretty women distracts him from the game. After the two clicked in the premiere last week, the pot-stirrers of their respective fourth and fifth seasons get upset when one gets to spend time with one of their matches. And what happens when voting strategy gets in the way of those best laid plans?

So, two weeks down and already a lot of drama taking place with Gio and Alicia and her match Mike, while Tori and Devin are now at odds in her going against his strategy. The week's challenge does give Alicia something to finally answer to her doubters after what we saw from her over the winter. Once again, Nate is at the heart of the drama in him pursuing Carolina as she has to deal with Hayden who's been expressing his love for Gianna back home. And Adam & Shanley do stay in the game despite inklings of the Steal possibility looming over The Choice. More on this later on the WRAP.

With this in mind, we'd thought we'd like to bring you this latest installment of Before They Were MTV Stars, and to focus in on one of the guys on this season who we also got to see execute a strategy that worked in the Caribbean but saw one person screw it all up and give the Are You The One? Season 5 cast the first-ever loss a few weeks ago. Of course, we're talking about Derrick, who before he went on Season 5 - and bringing to the world the hashtag #TeamChocolate - was a college basketball player.
Those enthusiasts who follow more of the mid-major and minor conferences of Division I college ball - those who often serve as Bracket Busters in March, know that Derrick played for four years at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC - in the Charlotte metropolitan area. However, a torn ACL sidelined him for his senior year, and then transferred south to Charleston and to The Citadel, the military college, for his fifth and final year. That season, Derrick led all Bulldogs with 16.2 points per game.
Instead of looking at joining the NBA D-League or traveling abroad to play the European leagues, Derrick decided to just stay where he was in the Carolinas, until MTV came calling to be part of the Season 5 cast. Below are two highlight reels from his final two seasons, along with a feature piece from when he was at Winthrop.
