Welcome one & all to DC SocialPulse and to Episode 10 of Are You The One? as the quest for 20 men & women to find love and share in the biggest prize in MTV's history reaches its climax in the finale of what has been a successful first season of this social experiment that's become my guilty pleasure.
Back on EP9, the group dressed in white and partied on the beach, while their resident comedian, John, had to come to quips with Jacy & Scali becoming close. We also saw them get down and dirty on the sand as well, along with scuba diving and the Brooklynite seeing a turtle. And the strategy of them banding together with the money in their sights saw more dividends with a 3rd perfect match in the truth booth and one more in the matchup, putting them within two steps of the ultimate goal.
This week, with the group on the edge of glory, they will try to figure out how to use their last chances to find their match and cash that million. We'll also see Jacy confront her feelings for Scali and for John as the rest of the house will try to get over that last hurdle of solving the last love triangle, along with a rather revealing challenge. And of course, will the group's strategy of banding together and switching up the last two pairs that aren't perfect matches in the next-to-last matchup pay off?
In addition, this extended edition of the 'Pulse will also feature tweets from the marathon of the show that aired prior to the finale, as well as the weekend before & the day after. Then after that, I'll offer my thoughts on the season in general, the move that eventually determined the outcome and a thank you note to the cast. First...

DC's VIEW
Well, you can sum up this finale in four words from the tweet that officially put this one on ice: "Mission impossible...mission accomplished." It wasn't long ago early on in the season that the group was all over the place in their quest for love and money, and for a time they weren't sure if they could possibly run the table. But somehow in the end, they all came together and we get the ending they and all of us wanted: them going 10 for 10 and winning $1 million.
When I discovered this show just two months ago after one of the castmates, Jessica, liked some of my RW pics on my Instagram, I never thought for a second that I could fall in love with a dating show like Are You The One?, no less give it a try for someone who might not watch The Bachelor like his mom does. But ten weeks have passed since January 21st, and it's safe to say that this has become my guilty pleasure, and as I tweeted back, it's made staying up late on Tuesday nights worth losing some sleep for. And it's joined The Real World and The Challenges as my favorite shows as well, something I never thought I would say once the season has ended, and a great one at best.
Going back to when I got to know more about this show and this cast, I had the curiosity I usually have for other MTV shows outside of the RW/Challenge world: I am down for anything. When I got to know the cast more & more as the premiere approached, I decided to give this a try. They all had one thing in common: they were unlucky in the love department, and once they were chosen they all went through a rigorous matchmaking process to determine who their match was before moving to Kauai and living with both their match and 18 other people.
I was hooked on Are You The One? from the first few minutes of the premiere, and as the season went on I suddenly became enthralled by everything going on in the house and watching these great people go through all those things I've become accustomed to from the shows I love: drama, romance, jealousy, temptation, competition and money. Plus, there's an awesome and eclectic cast from all over the country with great personalities, good looks and a whole lot more than that too.
Ryan put it best in his blog when he wrote, "It's like nothing I've ever seen...Are You The One? will blow your mind."...and indeed it has. One of my twitter friends described it as "The Challenge with a dating theme," with elements of The Bachelor, Real World and The Challenge mixed in, and it has even brought those who are fans of those shows to this social experiment as well. From watching the challenges to the interactions between everyone in the group, from wondering who might or might not be a match to of course all the drama, Are You The One? is the first time in a long while that a reality show outside of The Real World and The Challenge has guipped my attention in the same way that those two shows do. It to me feels like a roller coaster the likes of which I've never been on before. And though we hear of that saying "All good things must come to an end," for this one, this story ended with the perfect ending everyone wanted, and that brings to me to what ultimately decided this.
The thing that stands out to me is when the dust has settled on this season is that towards the end of this, somehow in the midst of the drama that took place in the house, and the difficulties they had in matching up, something started to click. When the group found themselves in trouble after week 4 - when they received only 2 perfect matches, it was in week 5 and at the waterfall challenge that they were given an additional truth booth vote. And when Coleysia & Dillan became the first confirmed perfect match, that gave the house their first sign of hope. At the matchup, they garnered 5 matches.
And I feel that it was at the very next matchup where they only got that same amount, along with the fights between Shanley & Simone and Wes & Ryan, and of course Chris T. & Paige becoming a match whether Shanley & everyone liked it or not, that really served as the turning point of this season, and the wake-up call this group desperately needed. This was the moment where, instead of going after one another in the house, the group would all come together knowing they didn't have that many chances to try and possibly pull this one off.
Being someone who's getting more used to reality competition shows and seeing competitors strategize, the group eventually came up with a plan that if they got a higher amount of perfect matches going towards the end, those still in the house who were confident that they had their match decided to keep being paired up with the same couples every week and to try & figure out who among the group weren't perfect matches. Instead of all of the couples necessarily going for love, they all decided to come together as one whole team and go for the money.
The week after that week 6 drama, amidst what we saw with Kayla, they still were able to garner a higher amount in 7. When Wes & her became a match a week later to become match #3, that number increased to 8, and Adam coined it perfectly that they had this one in the bag. All that was left was to figure out who the last two matches were. Finally when it came to what would be their last truth booth, when Dre sent John & Jacy in and found they weren't a match, they, Scall & Ashleigh knew that they had to switch the partners that they had last week. In the end, once the ninth light were lit, they knew they had made the right move, this was the right strategy and this one decided the whole thing.
And what made this achievement all the more impressive? They closed the deal in 9 weeks, with just one week to spare. To be honest, I did have a feeling that when they revealed this episode would be the finale because of that week 6 drama being spread out over two weeks and unless they extended this finale to 90 minutes to squeeze in two challenges, truth booths & matchups, then this would be it. But had they not wrapped this one up, it would've gotten scary and they would've then faced a Game 7 scenario where they could either win or lose in just one try, and it would've cause a domino effect in the match department. But they didn't have to worry about that, they achieved this impossible task. And I gotta applaud the group for coming together with this plan that ultimately gave them the cash.

To all 20 of you, you have all accomplished what no other cast of an MTV show (not even the revered Challenge) has ever done: win $1 million. It was a enormous task that was so big that early on, I didn't know that you guys and girls could possibly pull this one off. But deep down inside, I and everyone else was rooting for you all to get this one done. And this could not happen to a better, great and awesome group of people as yourselves.
You all have been winners from the start in the way that you all have interacted very well with me and your fans, and you're the largest MTV group in which I have gotten an interact in social media from every single member of this cast. And be fortunate that I got to jump on this AYTO bandwagon right when the trailer was released, and I've been able to follow all of you right from the start. So I'm lucky to have been on this ride before all of you amassed a total number of over 571,000 cumulative followers you all have in the days after you closed this thing out.
And now I have you all to send congrats on achieving this seemingly improbable & daunting task, and to also thank for giving me a show I definitely enjoyed and also being fan friendly with me and the rest of the social media world. And while you may or may not find themselves in love with their perfect match - and also knowing that not everyone might be friends with all of the 19 other people in your cast, you all, nonetheless, are bonded for the rest of your lives by this one-of-a-kind experience.
And even though I am now anticipating season 2 of Are You The One?, I am definitely sure that you all have given the lucky few who will be following in your footsteps a very tough act to follow. And as you all enjoy this win, I wish you nothing but the best in your future endeavors. And don't forget, I will always give all 20 of you people my support. So thanks again.
