Welcome back everyone to DC SocialPulse and our continuing coverage of Real World Ex-Plosion. And after being very busy with the Sochi Olympics, it's good to be back to devoting most of my energies on here to the MTV world. Last week in San Francisco, we saw Tom catch himself in the middle of a love triangle between him, Jamie and Haliey, while Brian became disturbed by the wild behavior of his ex Jenny. And there was another life changer in store in the house when Cory's ex Lauren found out that she is pregnant.
And with the fitting title of "The Test," that's where Episode 7 picks up from right there this week with Cory getting the news from Lo as she contemplates whether or not to leave the city. We will also get to know more about Arielle and Ashley C., including a secret Ari has been hiding from her, as well as meeting her friends. And after making brownies with Jenny, as well as yet another sighting of rebound guy Doug, a wild guys' night out leads Brian to perhaps get in trouble. Plus, we had the latest installment of the After Show, where we also saw that Doug guy again (more on that coming next week).
And following twitter's view, we'll put this episode in historical context with how Lauren being pregnant bringing back what happened previously, and the proud history of the LGBT community being represented on The Real World.

@dc408dxtr: Well that was another great episode. Things are getting better & better, saw some real life stuff & everything we come to expect. #RealWorld
Putting this episode into perspective, as we saw back in Episode 3 with Jay dealing with his mom's passing, while this is a totally new take on The Real World as we have known it until this season, it certainly hasn't lost the thing that makes it unique in the reality TV world over the last two decades: being able to provide a televised mirror on the issues & situations young adults go through. In this episode, we saw two instances of this take place, in Lauren dealing with her pregnancy and Arielle & her friends.
With what we saw with Lauren, her getting pregnant and eventually leaving, this is not the first time we have seen the topic of pregnancy being documented on The Real World, well before we even heard of 16 & Pregnant. Well before she became a Basketball Wife, Tami dealt with this very issue back on Real World Los Angeles 21 years ago. During that season, Tami, who had worked in an HIV clinic aside from being a member of an aspiring girl group, took a pregnancy test and it turned out positive.
After finding out, Tami decided to take a leave of absence from the house to go back home, also in the L.A. area. But with it taking place 20 years after the groundbreaking Roe vs. Wade ruling by the Supreme Court, Tami decided to take the bold step of getting an abortion with her mom watching.
And while they didn't involve a baby in the end, both Las Vegas seasons had pregnancy scares. On the first one, it was Trishelle & Steven having unprotected sex and her getting nauseous & having not taken a pregnancy test. When the rest of the girls pleaded for her to take one and her putting it off, it was only when Steven bought her the kit that she took one, and eventually it turned out negative, even with him being ready. And on Back to Las Vegas, Naomi feared that her health might've turned for the worse after she engaged in unprotected sex with Leroy and thought he may have given her an STD, before getting her period. But after a trip to the women's clinic, the test also came away negative. Good thing MTV always makes sure to include a PSA in any episode where it deems something of a social issue or health issue that can come about on this show.
Now for Arielle, this was the episode that reminded us that she was on this cast, and also introduced us to her backstory as a proud lesbian and having friends who are gay and transgendered. As one of the first TV shows to feature homosexual themes, The Real World has had a proud tradition of casting those from the LGBT community, which of course has a strong base in San Francisco as referenced to the Pride flag flying over the Castro District. Even the show's co-creator, Jonathan Murray, is part of that community as well.
The conversations we saw with her and her friends wasn't the first time we've heard the term "transgendered" on The Real World, as five years ago we met Katelynn, who was born as a male but eventually had surgery & became a female. She may not be the best Challenger, but Kat's backstory is one of RW's most unique. As for Arielle, she joins a long list of those from the LGBT community who've been on The Real World too many of which to mention here. But of course, the show's most-memorable cast member is Pedro Zamora, whose story of being diagnosed with AIDS, much of the last year of his life being documented on camera and him passing away hours after the season finale remains the definitive storyline in Real World history.
As I wrote back in my Episode 3 wrap, The Real World has always been at its best whenever it puts a mirror on social issues affecting the generations of viewers who have watched this show, documenting young people going through life-changing moments, or showcasing the real-life struggles & aspects of the strangers that viewers can relate themselves to. Along with True Life, Teen Mom and others, The Real World stands near to the heart of MTV's social activism commitment in seeing these issues & situations play out on camera. And even as we are witnessing all the hookups, the partying, the fighting and more that we come to expect this season as we have in recent times, the show hasn't let go of that one thing that makes it stand out from the other reality shows it spawned since it premiered 22 years ago. It's one of those reality shows that people can actually relate to, in addition to having fun as well, and now being interactive thanks to social media.

My RW Wrap post will include my thoughts on the twist of the exes moving in, Lauren getting pregnant and what we saw with Arielle, plus some other things too. And me being sidetracked by other things as well as often times having writers block will cause me to try to have these SocialPulse diaries out sooner rather than later, though this post which adds a historical angle to this episode saw this being delayed to this weekend. So, accept my apologies for not have it out sooner.
