Who Are These Newbies? - All-Star Shore: The Brits, the Mexicans & the Brazilians

Due to the heavy presence of graphics and video, "Who Are These Newbies?" is best experienced on desktops and fast-performing mobile devices. Some videos embedded contain adult language & situations, parental guidance is suggested.

Right now, summer 2022 in MTV Reality is going into overdrive as not one, but three all new series are debuting within the space of a couple weeks: Buckhead Shore was first to debut over a week ago, while this coming week sees The Challenge come to primetime network TV for the first time when CBS hosts a new spinoff featuring its reality show alumni just as All-Stars 3 is drawing to its end on Paramount+. And on that streamer, All-Star Shore is premiering as an all-new competition show featuring reality TV's finest... and we at DCBLOG now enter half #2 of this edition of "Who Are These Newbies?," as we turn from the ones who we know from watching American reality TV to those outside of our borders.

For this interesting tidbit: the MTV Shore series was a concept originally conceived by 495 Productions founder Sally-Ann Salsano and intended to be a VH1 competition show... but when she saw the cast that she put together was so good that summer of 2009, she decided to keep them all together for a Real World-like docu-series... and the rest is history: the show and its Seaside Heights location are American cultural landmarks. It's also grown into a franchise that has spanned eleven different regional variations including a German/Swiss series that aired last year in Europe in addition to four in Europe, three in the U.S., and two in Latin & South America. And here in the U.S., we'll have the pleasure of enjoying three different Shore shows at midweek this summer, as its Wednesday episode drops mean All-Star Shore will actually serve as the appetizer to Thursday night in both Family Vacation and Buckhead Shore.

After the break, we will turn the focus to those from outside the U.S. in six of those who come from Shore shows that, until now, were relative outsiders to those of us on this side of the Atlantic... so do two others who have gained enough fame outside of the MTV ecosystem to earn their way to the Canaries.

   THE BRITISH INVASION

When Paramount+ launched last year, it was a sure bet MTV fans here in the U.S. would finally get to watch those overseas shows that had rarely been shown on our screens here. To that end the first twenty-one series of Geordie Shore are now up on P+, and the franchise is so big on the global scale that at some point on here, we plan to do a few DCBLOG posts on Geordie to introduce their most notable castmates and see how they stack up with the Sitch, Nilsa, and now Parker & his Buckhead bunch.
The addition to Geordie to the P+ library now affords us to see how it all began for multiple Challenge vet Kyle Christie and the dozens who have lived with him & the first three people in this section. And a fourth hasn't been on in this franchise until now on All-Star Shore, but who has still racked up a solid reality CV prior to us getting to welcome him to our screens across the pond.

CHLOE FERRY
Geordie Shore

Jersey
has Sammi, Floribama has Aimee, and Buckhead has Katie & Savannah... they all got something in common in that they have blonde hair, and so does our first one here, even though her hair here is a bit darker. Chloe Ferry grew up with her family in Geordie's spiritual home of Newcastle in the North East of England, where Kyle and so many others reside. Pre-TV, she pursued an acting career while footing the bill working the club scene in Tyneside. Chloe also competed at youth level in the two Olympic sports that are the biggest draw to the female audience at the Games in gymnastics and figure skating... but since Team GB isn't a global power in those sports as the U.S. is, she didn't bother to pursue a chance to compete for an Olympic spot.
Chloe's reality debut came ten years ago this week when she was chosen for the BBC's Sun, Sex and Suspicious Parents, a cross between the typical MTV-like docu-series of fun and sex, and some weird spy sleuth shows. She flew to Sunny Beach, Bulgaria to indulge in the ultimate summer all by herself... or that was she was led to: the Ferry parents also flew over without her knowledge, and they had the pleasure of watching every move from a hotel room across the way and it was only when she was on her way out of town that they came over to surprise her.
But that was only a hint of what was ahead for Chloe, as MTV bosses were watching the pubcaster and thought of her when it came to adding new blood to the Geordie house once original castmate Vicky Pattison walked out the doors one last time at the end of its ninth series in mid-2014. Chloe and the Shore franchise's first LGBT castmate, Nathan Henry (who guest starred on Lindsay Lohan's Beach Club) moved in at the start of Season 10, and she brought to the house plenty of drama and big moments -- from her love/hate relationship with Nate to the times she's gone (or almost went) boom-boom.
Outside the Geordie house, Chloe has also notched a good British reality CV that's seen her tag Kyle along for a visit to Super Shore, invade the sand as an Ex On The Beach to ex Marty McKenna, shared quarters with Spencer & Heidi in the Series 19 British Celeb Big Brother house, preside over those ink reveals on the British version of How Far is Tattoo Far?, and find love two times on UK show Celebs Go Dating. For a time, she was actually in love being in a two-year relationship with Geordie co-star and Love Island UK alum Sam Gowland before revealing two years ago that she is bisexual.

BETHAN KERSHAW
Geordie Shore

Every MTV show nowadays have its own power tandem of sorts that seems to be joined at the hip... and coming into this house there's Chloe and Bethan Kershaw. She came to the Geordie group for Season 19 in 2019 during the farewell tour for longtime castmates Scotty T., Kyle's ex Holly Hagan and the one who was with Nate when Mike pulled down his pants in front of them in Mykonos, Sophie Kasaei.
Bethan, like Chloe, Kyle and many of the dozens of castmates, is a Newcastle local who actually first appeared on Geordie at the very beginning of the show back in 2011 for only a brief visit to the house. So began a stint on British reality television that would take her to the territory of Callum of EOTB 4: summer staple Ibiza Weekender in 2017 when she was a rep of the company that oversees the hundreds who descend on the European summer capital every year -- and where she briefly dated the top man in Ibiza, Jordan Davies. Being around people who love to party is something that's familiar to Bethan as she was a club hostess and stripper in high-end clubs in Tyneside.
Everybody knows the saying that "What goes around, comes around," and it was three years ago that Bethan returned to Geordie -- this time as a permanent fixture. She has had flings with longtime staple of the series, Gary "Gaz" Beadle, and a longer spell with a fellow Series 19 newbie in Beau Brennan -- they even got to the point that they would each other's endgame, but after a year of dating they were dunzo. But what got the tabloids in a frenzy was her relationship with one she rebounded with: star of British docu-soap The Only Way is Essex, Demi Sims, who also happens to be a cousin to one of the other British chaps on this cast -- and their relationship only last just a few months.

JAMES TINDALE
Geordie Shore

Over twenty seasons have passed since Geordie's 2011 debut, which has seen the show take place not only in Newcastle but also venture out of Britain to Spain, Cancun, Sydney and Greece for select seasons... not to mention go through a revolving door of talent going in and out. But with the exception of a few in its midlife, there's been a constant in the many houses the show has called home over the last decade: the presence of another Newcastle local, James Tindale.
James refers to himself as a "professional poser" who no doubt loves taking those mirror selfies before going on a night out... yet he's remained close to his family even as he's moved into a house with plenty of cars and a huge bed which he still keeps clean. In the several years in between his stints in the Geordie houses (he first left in 2014 to focus on his relationship to his girlfriend at the time, Kate Thorne), James opened his very own gym and became a personal trainer which should serve him well in competing on All-Star Shore, the same way that helped out Joss in his Challenge spell.
James was on the first ten series of Geordie, took a break for what would be a failed relationship with Kate, and returned a few years ago a single lad. You might say when watching the show on P+ that he is just about as calm as Pauly D., but there was one time where he got into a heated night with Gaz down in Australia. And given the show's reputation when it began, he was also the target of unfortunate hate and even death threats online.

JOEY ESSEX
Celeb Big Brother UK

Three years ago, we bestowed the title of headliner in the global War of the Worlds field to Bear... all because of his broad reality TV and becoming one of the UK's most notorious reality personalities -- especially with what's happened since Total Madness. So when it comes to All-Star Shore, there's perhaps no doubt that the one who heads this international contingent is none other than Joey Essex.
Joey hails from Southwark just north of Central London, where he attended high school in Essex before leaving as a teenager. However, he has spent most of his life since elementary school without the presence of his mom, who committed suicide when he was ten years old... and where her son has been an ambassador for Child Bereavement UK for the past decade and opened up about that traumatizing experience in a BBC documentary last year.
As seen above, Joey and Bethan have something in common in that she dated his cousin - that aforementioned Demi, who was part of the show that bears his surname (and where it began for Georgia Harrison pre-Love Island and Challenge), of what's known simply in Britain as TOWIE. He began as a supporting cast member in Season 2 before becoming promoted to the main cast the following year and spent a couple years on the show before leaving for good.
The reason for us pinning our headliner status on Joey is that he has done many reality competition shows overseas, starting with celebrity diving series Splash around the time of his last season on TOWIE. He also showed his versatility tackling the other side of the Olympic sport spectrum in winning UK winter sports competition series The Jump, and even the punishing task of military-style training on SAS: Who Dares Wins. He's also thrived in the non-physical side of reality television in having been on two seasons of Celebs Go Dating (including a kiss with a familiar face), and joined the aforementioned Georgia, Mob Wives' Marissa Jade and other UK reality stars of Celebrity Ex On The Beach.
But the show Joey has best put his skills of competing on these reality competition shows out there for a possible Challenge crossover has been I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here. He first took part in the thirteenth season of the British version of the Survivor-like competition series where he just missed out on a shot at the big money when he finished in 4th place. And this winter -- and summer down under, he returned for the Australian version of the franchise and also didn't win the top prize on Season 8... but he is now well rested for All-Star Shore here.

   THE MEXICANS &
    THE BRAZILIANS

The first time The Challenge welcomed those from nations where English is not the native language was War of the Worlds where Turbo from Turkey reigned supreme, and where he was joined by Brazilian Ex On The Beach alum JP and Mexican telenovela actor Alan. The show itself has taken place a few times in Mexico as has many vacations & one season on The Real World and countless Spring Breaks... and it was in Brazil that Bananas and Wes shared a Challenge field for the very first time on The Duel.
The results of the last U.S. Census have the Hispanic & Latino population as the fastest-growing segment, with a 23% increase to over 62 million residents. Meanwhile, this year's Coachella saw the breakout moment on our shores of Brazilian sensation Anitta when she took to the main stage with Snoop Dogg before becoming leading lady in Jack Harlow's "First Class" video. And this last section deals with those who come to us from Brazil and Mexico, where south of the border Acapulco Shore has been rocking MTV Latin America since fall 2014.

KARIME PINDTER
Acapulco Shore

James is the only Geordie to be on its first and most recent series... so does Angelina on Jersey here, but only Karime Pindter is the only one from a Shore series on All-Star Shore that's been there for every step on their original show: she's been on each of the nine seasons and 124 episodes of Acapulco Shore, as well as the original Super Shore produced with MTV Spain -- and it's just begun production on its milestone Season 10 south of the border. Growing up in the largest city in North America of Mexico City, she just turned 29 over a month ago... but was a 22-year-old when she first came to the nation's party capital for that first season seven years ago.
Karime cites surfing, dancing and vlogging as her hobbies... and it's with the ladder in mind that she has amassed 1.8 million subscribers to her YouTube channel, which far exceeds the number of followers that she has on any other social media outlet. If you know your Shore trivia, then it's pretty much a given that anybody on the show has to have a slice of pizza as their favorite food... and she has that on her list along with noodles, and football is her favorite sport in the land of the El Tri.
There's no doubt that the star of the first two seasons of Ex On The Beach was no doubt Angela... but Karime can relate so well to the physical transformation the Bad Girl got to undertake. The Mexican has opened up publicly about her many procedures that's seen her get a nose job similar to what we covered on here before, along with augmentation of her boobs and even getting both Botox and treatment to reduce the volume of her cheeks.
Karime has had quite the history on Acapulco Shore given her true OG status, but she wasn't well received by the rest of her roommates when she first moved in. But like every other person who's been on any Shore show for at least most of its run, she's become well-loved with her outgoing personality. But if we all remember those huge blowups with JWoww & Sammi and recently with #JeriGus, perhaps Karime is well-known for her up & down relationship with Manelyk Gonzalez, who she became close with and became known as "Las Comadres." But like it was when Spencer came in and him breaking up Lauren & Heidi on The Hills, it was Mane's man Jawy MΓ©ndez and him going from her to Karime that led this friendship to go down the drain... as you can see below.

LUIS "PORTO" CABALLERO
Acapulco Shore

Joining Karime on the flight from Mexico to the Canaries is someone who was also there for most of this Acapulco Shore ride. In the nation that gave the world those telenovelas that air every night on Spanish-language TV here and south of the border, Luis Caballero is best known to Mexican viewers simply as "Porto" and "The Seducer," and who boasts the most diverse reality resume of those from the Americas... not to mention, he's also the resident singer having dropped a few songs the past few years.
Luis has gotten to strut his stuff on the dance floor on The Stars Dance in Hoy on leading Mexican network Televisa, got to do those vocal chops on La Academia on rival channel TV Azteca, and last year moved into the Celebrity Big Brother house -- that is, Spanish-language version of that on Telemundo... thus making his American TV debut. No doubt, the experience he gained competing for HOH and vetoes there should help him a bit on All-Star Shore (something he likes to call "the pedi-Olympics" as got to tell Mexican site Infobae) and maybe in a future Challenge.
If you are fortunate enough to have gotten to know him from being on Acapulco Shore, Porto will no doubt relish the reunion he will have here with Karime: they often referred to themselves on the show as "The Braguish Duo," and with good reason. If you love the bromance that Pauly and Vinny have, then the same kind of fun, humor and knack for hilarious phrases rests here with Porto and Karime.

RICARDO SALUSSE
Rio Shore

Until the debut of Buckhead, the title of New Kids on the Shore rested with those who sport the green & gold: Rio Shore premiered last September on MTV Brazil and its local version of Paramount+ as the cast took up residency in one of the world's most-glamourous cities, all within sight of the world-famous Copacabana Beach. Thus, the show's familiar formula took on a totally Brazilian flavor there... and Season 2 just begun with some fireworks last week when a castmate got kicked out for getting into fisticuffs with another housemate.
One of those who took up residency on that first Rio Shore last year is Ricardo Salusse, a 25-year-old at the time of when he moved into the villa last year. Terra in Mexico describes him as "the cool nerd of the group" thanks to having professional studies in geography and also being a teacher... and if you can figure out where the Canary Islands are located then you're probably just as smart as Ric is. He also just happens to love playing video games, too... and that's all the biographical info we could get on him.
But, it takes for the combination of the vibe of a Shore house with the vibrant country of Brazil for Ric to let it all out... and that includes him getting to make out with someone of the same gender and even flirting with being part of a threesome engaging in some late night fun. Yes, the nerd side of him takes a back seat whenever he walks into the Rio Shore house... and it's likely we'll see him do that in the All-Star villa.

MARINA GREGORY
The Circle Brazil

As noted in our preview, there's something that binds our last subject to the one who came in late on the last regular Challenge: they come from the show that became a harbinger of what it would be like just forced to be all home alone. As it was for Ed on Spies, Lies & Allies, Marina Gregory comes to an MTV produced show from Netflix's first successful and buzzworthy reality competition show The Circle... only she competed on the Brazilian version of it and not on ours.
Growing up also in Rio but who's racked up a good passport thanks to landing a flight attendant's gig, Marina's heart is in the world of music where she loves being able to sing. Proof of that comes in having taken up YouTube at an early age... and just glancing at her channel she took advantage of watching Beyonce, JT and her favorites at the 2013 Rock in Rio festival and got to do covers of her favorite songs in a digital world many years away from TikTok lip-syncs and dances. And she's already got someone on her side: she randomly ran into EDM icon Diplo while going on a hike.
Marina came to The Circle Brasil with a different game-plan than what is usually the case for anyone who goes on that show: instead of trying to make a version of themselves that is completely different, she came to the complex just being herself with an aim to be both authentic and transparent to the others, with only one change in making herself three years younger than she was in being aged 22 instead of her actual age of 25. It's that strategy that contributed to her winning and earning her a R$300,000 payday -- which translates to just a meager $60,000 USD, which she used to move into her own apartment. And one more thing... Marina has one other reality show appearance that came after that: last year, she was chosen for a celebrity version of Ex On The Beach Brasil.
