Hi again, welcome to DC SocialPulse and to our play-by-play of episode 3 of The Challenge: Free Agents. Last week, we had romance and racing in Uruguay as the season's first threesome emerged between Jessica, Dustin and Emilee. We saw competitors race on the drag strip & a tricycle, and a night of celebration saw the first fight of the season between CT and Isaac, and then with Nany & Camila. And the unpredictability of this season proved itself with another key competitor & previous finalist going home, ending that budding romance in the process.
This week, we see a Challenge 25 reenactment of one of the most memorable moments from RW Back to Las Vegas when one of its cast members & the guy she's flirtatious with in Uruguay enjoy a night of bachelor and bachelorette party madness as they get engaged...at least on a pretend basis. In the week's mission, everyone becomes shocked by a sudden departure before it even begins, while we have another epic elimination battle. And after twitter's view of this episode & after show and my winners of the night, we'll have some perspective on two cities who have figured prominently in these first three weeks, especially with one being in the spotlight outside the Challenge world this week.

WINNERS OF THE NIGHT
The exhausting nature of this week's elimination and process of putting together these tweets, coupled with me being focused on the NBA & NHL playoffs, and also helping my mom & dad with packing up for their two-week long trip to Europe over the weekend, means that I will bound this week's episode wrap over to a dedicated DC wrap post covering this & next week's episodes coming up the weekend after this coming one. But I do have some winners on the night to share with you though, and we will jump straight into it right now, starting with this week's MVP.
- The last two times Cara Maria came to a Challenge, it was rather late. She was part of a hastily-assembled & dysfunctional Fresh Meat team that came in to replace Isaac & Team Sydney at the last minute on BOTS. And last year, she came in to replace Naomi when she had to fly home early, but did so much better with a strong partner in Cooke on their way to a 2nd place showing. While competitors have been lukewarm to her in these past few seasons, what we saw this week from her will definitely change everyone's perception of our favorite red head going forward. The performance CM had in an elimination where it was anyone's to win is definitely one that will prove her to be a force this season, finally going from underdog to true contender. It might not be the best battle ever, but it was certainly one of the longest, taking all of an hour & a half to complete wire to wire. But this became a battle of who wants it more, and while it could've went either way, it was Cara Maria who prevailed. This is Cara Maria's 7th straight Challenge, and she's become a veteran who's been able to handle everything throughout her run on this, except for winning the final. But with this performance that's worthy of her becoming both a beast and a fighter, this will definitely prove that she is in it for the long haul and to go for the cash. And she has rival-turned-BFF Laurel on her side too.
- Her fellow Fresh Meat alum Brandon is also among the winners. Like fellow Vegas resident Leroy, BDN must be fortunate that this Challenge season was the one exact thing he wanted: an individual one with no weak partners or alliance politics to worry about. Other than for a confessional or two and holding back Camila in her fight last week with Nany, he hasn't been featured much in this season, and that's pretty much how he prefers it. Brandon is someone who's very likable, doesn't like to be at the center of drama, and is focused more on the game. But this week, this was where he made his mark as captain of the team that won this week's mission. Sure, Johnny Bananas & Camila were part of this foursome, and Jessica made it 3 straight stellar missions in her great sophomore showing. But with him as leader of this team, he finally had the opportunity to take top billing in a challenge, and show what he's made of as a former Arkansas Razorback football player. In an environment where there's drama just about everywhere you go, it's really good to have a good guy like Brandon have the spotlight and enjoy winning something on this show for a change. And as I'll be writing in my cast memories post later this season, his influence goes beyond the Challenge field. So BDN, you're among my winners this week.
DC's VIEW
Now, some perspective and putting the two cities the two ladies in this week's elimination in context, and for who they have a place in their heart for.
Earlier this week saw Boston take center stage in the sports world with their beloved annual tradition known as the Boston Marathon taking place. This year was particularly meaningful for so much more than just a 26.2 mile footrace - and taking place on the local holiday of Patriot's Day, as this is the first time it has been run since last year's devastating bombing. Monday, it took place amid heightened security, but ended not just with no incident, but also with a proud moment in Meb Keflezighi becoming the first American to win the men's title in 31 years. Last year's marathon took place while Rivals II was taping in Asia (cast was kept abreast on matters there), while the Red Sox would eventually win the World Series just after the cast left for Uruguay, shortly after we saw CT's win. This Free Agents cast features seven people - 25% of this group - with ties to New England: four natives in CT, Cara Maria, Emilee & Johnny; resident Zach, who lives there with radio host Ashlee from RW NOLA2; and two who once lived there in Camila (who went to high school south in Taunton) and Preston (who lived there prior to NOLA). New England has long been a hotbed of MTV casting starting with David on RW Seattle and going down the list of those too many to mention here all the way to Johnny last year, not to mention Brittany from Are You The One?. And the constant presence of New Englanders on MTV shows have taken place in a time where the area has seen huge national presence as all of their sports teams have won titles. As this year's Marathon has lifted the spirits of New England, and with Team Boston being prevalent on this Challenge - including Cara Maria winning this week's elimination, this week has reminded us of where they come from and the place they call home.
And second, with all four of its representatives playing key roles in this early part of the season, as I wrote before, I can be fortunate that I've been on the ride with Team Portland for the last 18 months now. It was a year ago at this time that RWPDX was airing, and this while two of them were tearing things up in Thailand, Princess Hulk was just prepping to make her mark and a hurricane was ready to hit Oregon. As I wrote in my Social World post before RW Ex-Plosion, a memory I have of Jessica, Jordan, Nia, Johnny & the RWPDX cast is that I got to follow & talk with some of them just after they ended filming in Nov. '12 and established a rapport with all of them prior to & during a season I enjoyed so much. And as you saw in one of Brian Cohen's tweets above (and though he's not a fan of one girl), he believes that Team Portland has the makings of a great Challenge cast and is already comparing them to the renowned '03 NBA Draft class of LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, Carmelo Anthony & Chris Bosh. Already 3/4th's of Team PDX have been on a Challenge with most of them have athletic backgrounds ranging from being a top-ranked linebacker at Texas Tech (Marlon) to motorbiking to cheerleading - probably won't be long until we see Joi & Averey. Seeing Jessica doing awesome these first 3 weeks, Jordan going to a final & braving this week's tough mission, Johnny making out w/ Nany and Nia giving all she had, as it was for St. Thomas, I feel lucky I got to know these people as early as I did, and I can sense that this great cast should have a great Challenge future lying ahead of them.
