Welcome to DC SocialPulse and to our tweet-by-tweet diary of episode 4 of The Challenge: Free Agents. Previously, we saw Nany and Cohutta get married, karma supposedly getting back to one of the key players of the last few seasons, and another great elimination battle.
This week, we see one player's cockiness and egotistical attitude create tension in the house - and among his fellow Portlander, while competitors will go head to head - literally - in the week's mission that also takes advantage of integrating the beautiful game into this season being held in the continent where the World Cup will take place next month (and also where it began). Guess which competitor would become the story of this week's episode? You will not believe it.
Following our wrap up of this & last week's episodes and my winners of the night, we'll talk about what happened with one of the competitors from this week's elimination, and I'll talk about not only one of my good twitter friends but also one of the best in the biz in talking with Team MTV.

DC WRAP
Now to the Wrap, and we'll start off with last week, and with the Nany/Cohutta romance. There seems to be something about Nany that attracts the guys, and there seems to be something about Cohutta that attracts the ladies. If what we saw with them making out early on at the bar, it came into fruition with him proposing, albeit in a mock, friendly way, and her saying yes. And we also had some fun watching the group enjoy a good old bachelor & bachelorette party in their house, and seeing Jasmine twerk and Johnny kiss Nany.
Then there was what happened with Frank. We've seen him in three eliminations: he & Ashley beat Jonna & Derek in the last BOTS arena; then in the first two Draws this season, he won both of them, the 2nd one impressively over Dustin. When we saw him on the phone with his mom, he knew that he might not go all the way due to being sick. Then, TJ came in to announce that Frank would be sent home with that illness that might be contagious and may cause others to get sick. While many would question whether it was the right call or not, and a couple people thinking that this is karma coming back to him, I do think that in his heart this wasn't the kind of exit he wanted from doing these shows, though I do support the notion that family, career & school come first and he'll take a break to go to graduate school. I'm not in a position to express if I would want to see him again, because I feel it is up to them to decide. So I leave it up to him.
As for the mission, as I wrote last week, we saw Brandon finally receive a much needed & well deserved spot as captain on the winning team of him, Bananas, Camila & Jessica. But we also saw a gutsy decision made by Jordan, Jonna & Jasmine that they would compete instead of sitting out & perhaps risking going into the Draw; and them being the only trio thanks to Frank being DQ'd. With the girls knowing very well what happened to Team Cancun on BOTS when playing conservatively may cause a team's downfall, they & Jordan all decided to take a gamble to go for it all. We've seen what Jordan is made of in being able to do greatly everything he is capable of on basically one hand, but it was a valiant effort for him to try & keep that log in hand which didn't work out and they were DQ'd. But I'm proud of them for giving it a try. It's the risk-reward moment of Free Agents so far.
Then, there's that elimination. With Frank gone, it was ladies night in the arena as Cara Maria & Nia faced off in what was essentially a tug of war with both of them on a rope and them trying to ring a bell. I gotta say it might not be my all-time favorite elimination in the handful of seasons I've watched of this, but it was definitely one of the hardest & toughest. Imagine being in that environment with TJ, the cast and the crew as it happened and watching the entire battle unfold, start to finish - that's nearly an hour & a half, good thing they pared this down to several minutes. This eventually became a battle of who wanted this most, and the turning point came towards the end when Johnny Bananas gave support to Nia was the wake up call for Cara Maria to finally get up and finally end this ordeal. For me, I was torn on who to root for and while I would've gone for either, it was Cara Maria who deserved this more. And as it turned out, this was just the start.
This week, we began with another Challenge romance blossoming, this time with Laurel and Jordan; and though they are into each other, a lot of the other competitors aren't feeling them. One of their critics is Aneesa, who doesn't like them together, and adds that they are the alpha female & male paired up, essentially dating the same type of high-ranked person in this. We'll see how this couple fares the rest of the way.
Though not a major soccer powerhouse like Spain, England & Brazil, Uruguay was where the first FIFA World Cup took place in 1930, and with Brazil hosting next month's tournament you would think that we wouldn't have a South American Challenge season without giving owe to the beautiful game. With that in mind, this week's mission was called "Bounce Out," and in this challenge the objective was to score 3 goals by getting a team's ball into a goal, while everyone else was playing defense...and wearing giant orbs on their heads while being stuck in a large ball.
Bananas and Cara Maria captained the respective red and yellow teams, which were then divided into two separate groups, with Johnny & Jordan being the "ball" for Red while Zach & Isaac were yellow's "ball". Here, it's not your typical Futbol match as everyone is bumping, running into each other, falling and trying to come up with something. But somehow Team Red would get on the board first, when Jordan got an assist from Bananas to notch the first goal of the match in Group A. Then in the first Group B match, it's basically the same thing, but in the end we get one of the most unlikeliest of goal scorers when, of all people, Preston, came all the way from the other end of the pitch to push Jordan in, and it's 2-nil. Preston? Who saw that coming?
Then in the 3rd match, Yellow decides to let Zach do his thing to try and avoid being handed the clean sheet shutout when he proved himself by pushing everyone away and making it 2-1. In Match #4, it's, as my Croatian friend Neya likes to refer to it (in her blog), the same thing again with Isaac not getting by Laurel, Nany and Johnny and more of the same. Jordan and Preston are already at the other end and Preston pushes Leroy down for his 2nd goal to clinch the match 3-1 from Team Red, and everyone had someone new to celebrate with. I'm gonna be talking about this in my winners of the night, but to think that someone who's gotten ridiculed to have the spotlight, it's fantastic.
At various times last year on Rivals II, we saw what could happen when the opportunity to vote people into elimination gets complicated. This week, we saw the first instance this season of that happening, when the red team got the dibs on the matter. A lot of the girls had Aneesa as the one they would vote in, except for Jessica who made a promise to the elder stateswoman of the cast. When Laurel let Jess know about this, Princess then told Aneesa as the Philly lady's dislike grows, and it also grabs Jordan's attention too. At those deliberations, Jonna expresses her stalemate on who to vote in, and Jordan tells her to make up her mind and adds, "you're not Jessica." This grabs Jessica's attention and they get into a screaming match over him devaluing her spot in the game. All I could think after watching that was bringing me back to episode 2 of RWPDX and the chair jump.
Also, there was some tension in how the guy vote took place, though maybe not as huge as what we saw with the ladies. There, we saw Brandon get voted in, instead of Leroy who in the minds of some hasn't done much in a season that he's supposed to do well in an individual challenge. Yes, there was a lot of random deals and new policies developed inside, and that grabbed the attention of Latoya, who was voted in instead of the veteran. That led her to getting mad after she thought that many wouldn't vote her in. She goes after Jordan, and Laurel defends him, only for 'Toya to get frustrated to her and tells her to keep control of Jordan.
And in The Draw, we saw Cara Maria draw the kill card to go into elimination for the 2nd straight week, while Zach goes into the arena for the 1st time. We know what happened the last time Thor was in elimination where emotions got the best of him, but for a game called Oppenheimer that's essentially Hall Brawl/Last Chance in a circle, he knows very well what happened when he donned football gear and collided head on w/ his opponent. In the ladies battle, Latoya slips in the 1st race, and in the 2nd, Cara Maria goes faster and sweeps away Toya. And in the guys' arena, the sure size Zach has leads him to plow through Brandon quite easily and wins both heats, and Brandon's bad luck continues.
WINNERS OF THE NIGHT
Now the winners of the night and I'll concur with fellow blogger David J. Bloom (@DavidBloom7) in which we had pretty much the same ones. And we start off with the MVP of this episode, and probably one of the most unlikeliest that we've had in recent memory.
- If you were one of the handful who had Preston to possibly contend this season---and not just in Rock Paper Scissors, you must be very lucky right now. From March Madness to the FA Cup, we often see an underdog become a Cinderella story when the competition is at its best. This certainly applies to Preston and what we saw here definitely backed that up. When we saw him on BOTS & Rivals II, we wondered why he was chosen in the first place. But in the last guys mission in Thailand we saw him show what he's made of, running up the ramp with balls in hand. That was a sneak peek of this week, when somehow, he made his mark when no one except him thought this would happen. Preston came from the other end of the field to score Red's 2nd goal, and then did again for the game-winner; no one thinks lightning could strike twice. His story is similar to that of Mike on Rivals when he came in to replace Adam, had the advantage of being friends with Leroy and both going all the way to the final. We always love the underdog, and Preston is taking on this role as a clutch player underestimated by everyone with great stride, and with the luck that being picked last is actually good.
- Last week, Cara Maria had an answer to everyone who doubted her by taking out Nia in their long tug of war battle. This week and after a 2nd straight elimination win in as many weeks - and a 4th trip to the draw, she definitely has made it clear to everyone that she is now for real. No longer is Cara Maria the underdog in these Challenges, she can now tell everyone that she is in it to win it. As her tweets point out, in the 7 straight trips she has made to these shows since she first graced us with her presence in Vancouver, she has been to 11 total eliminations (sans the Thailand fake out), and out of all that, she has won 8 and lost only 3. One more elimination win and she has the all-time lead by herself. And now, she has a 4-match winning streak in the chamber, going back to the first girls jungle last year. For the three teams that won two jungle last year, they made it all the way to the final, including Cara Maria. Winning two eliminations in one season should be an omen again for her to get a shot at gold.
- For the lady who lost that battle to Cara Maria, LaToya leaves Uruguay with not just her head up but also plenty to be proud of in her first Challenge. She went farther than most would've expected of her (and not just this Free Agents format providing some safety for the newcomers), but also made her mark. She started this season with a trip to the hospital after that first challenge, then came back to outlast Rivals II finalist Jemmye in stunning fashion, and backed that up by doing well in other missions. Plus, she brought a new energy into the house by becoming friends with the guy she lost in elimination with, Brandon, in creating a house talk show; while also showing a feistiness on speaking her mind when she got voted. And she also made amends with the guy she was at odds with while on Hassel Island, Swift. David Bloom sums up 'Toya on twitter (@DavidBloom7) this way: "Stellar rookie campaign, eloquent and articulate, the strongest of wills." No doubt 'Toya will be back on later Challenges. Team St. Thomas has a good Challenge future ahead.
Now, I may have talked about this before in a past blog, but it's not often that a true romance would come about in the RW/Challenge community, and it proved itself this week, and what happened was sort of a coincidence that it takes place on Challenge Thursday. Hours before we saw him compete & win in this week's Draw, news emerged on the Ramiro in the Morning show at Jam'n 94.5 in Boston that show co-host Ashlee from RW Back to NOLA had broken up with Zach. It appeared to many that they were made for each other and it was a good relationship, some say better than that Zach had with Jonna. From hearing the podcast on the Jam'n site, it was the directions Zach & Ashlee were taking in their lives that eventually saw them break up, although they do remain friends. As we saw with Johnny & Averey breaking up just before he went to Uruguay, it's now a rarity these days in the RW/Challenge world for a relationship that came to fruition on either show to turn into a everlasting one, reaching the ones we're seeing with Judd/Pam & Rachel/Sean, and putting it in today's context wih Lauren & Derek from Catfish and Amber & Ethan from Are You The One?.
Perspective
Finally, with him having done his first webcast of this season this past week, just as I did during RW Ex-Plosion, this is an opportunity for me to acknowledge one of my good social media friends & fellow fans of The Challenge & The Real World. Someone who shares a great passion for the shows & sports I'm into is someone who lives on the other side of the mountains that separate the Bay Area from the Central Valley here in NorCal, and he is Andrew Kirk (@CSUAKirk). We've been great twitter friends since my first summer in the twitter verse two years ago, and if you follow me @DC408dxtr I often tweet alerts of his interviews with MTV personalities.
Andrew started doing podcasts a few years back on Blog Talk Radio, but inspired by having been a regular caller to Brandon's Real Talk webcast in 2011, it really kicked into high gear when he returned the favor by having BDN on as his first guest later that year before Battle of the Exes; and during that Challenge, he talked with Jasmine & Tyrie. AK's first full season doing interviews shortly followed when he talked to 6/7th's of the RW St. Thomas cast, followed by talking to almost half of the BOTS cast (including 8 of the 10 finalists). For RW Portland, he like me completed the cycle of having talked to all 8 roommates on his podcast during the season, then during Rivals II he moved his interviews to SpreeCast, continuing with RW Ex-Plosion and right up to when he talked to Jasmine last week. And incidentally, the people who were eliminated are a couple of his fave guests; in addition to BDN, he talked to Latoya the day after the RWSTT premiere, and even Trey surprised her by calling in.
In all, Andrew has interviewed over 40 members of Team MTV on his webcasts, but his highest-rated show ever doesn't even involve a RW/Challenge castmate. That was when he landed the first webcast interview with Shanley from Are You The One? two days after her fight with Simone and the truth booth that separated her from her love, Chris T. It garnered over 4,000 single day views, 8,000 same week views & over 11,000 total views to this day, blowing away by a mile all of the other interviews AK has done, either on SpreeCast or on BTR. And some of the followers in our clique of fans have taken part in his webcasts, including yours truly in asking some questions in the chat room.
Andrew, thanks for your awesome friendship, and I'm looking forward to your interviews this season on Free Agents. As always, keep up the awesome work...you're one of the best in this business.
