DC WRAP: The Challenge Bloodlines - "Blood Brothers"

BY DC CUEVA
@DC408dxtr / @DC408dxnow

Welcome back to DCBLOG as our look at Episode 7 of The Challenge: Battle of the Bloodlines continues with the DC WRAP recap, as we prep for a big night ahead. This season has seen so much happen that you can hardly believe that we are to Episode 8.
Last week, the focus shifted to Cara Maria & Abram as the rumors of her cheating on him got him to a boiling point, while a tense mission on a skyscraper and the voting results saw hatred between Abe & Michael and her hookup - Thomas & his twin brother Stephen led to an intense Pit battle. And for the After Show, plenty of fireworks as well as again, Abe's trademark intensity got to him as well.
For those who want your episode fix in a nutshell with just the night's key moments, dig in to our Things to Know recap. Plus find out who our Winners of the Night are, and see how you, the fans, reacted to the events on a 'Pulse Extra. And after that on DC ExtraTime, what happens when this very show and animation come together? Find out what the results are, plus a look at a touching moment of family first from premiere week of MTV's 35th Anniversary year...all after the jump.

 SIX THINGS TO KNOW

> That Alliance
We begin our Six Things to Know recap with that move Bananas pledged to make in starting the fire that would see a house alliance go ka-boom. That alliance centered around Cara Maria & Jamie, Abram & Mike, and Thomas & Stephen and JB vows his plans to break them apart would be "the most strategic, evil move in Challenge history." Vince lets Abram know of what happened with Cara & Tom before he arrived in Turkey and though he admits that he won't give up on her, the revelation he got would both Abe.

> Abe Finds Out & Goes Nuts
Once news sinks in of Cara's cheating ways and him totally trusting the scoop he got from Vince, Abe goes after her on the patio. Thomas joins in on the chat but he and Cara deny the accusations, and Abe lets out his temper on the Ex-Plosion alum. Cara would then pull him aside to again state that it was just a massage that they had and not a kiss as Vince told them (and we saw). Of course, Abe goes nuts and encourages her to vote Tom into the Pit rather than for the aggressive Abe to go all-in literally on him. Though she relents on the point, she vows to keep him happy while they're there though they're not on the same stance. And of course, there's the chat on the bus of where Abe tries to let them know that Cara's being lied to and don't have her back.

> Hang Tough Above Ground
The last time we saw a challenge held in the city outside of the house, it was the last regular mission on Exes 2 and saw the same thing Bananas did to Nany what Sarah did to him there on the spot in Panama (more on them in ExtraTime). There's nothing quite like a mission held 50 stories above on a skyscraper, and that's where it can bring out the best and the worst of competitors...it's literally High Stakes. This week sees competitors try to complete a jungle gym of ropes safely and right off the bat, Aneesa balked at the chance to go across and got DQ'd by TJ Lavin. For those who did make an effort, Abe, KellyAnne, Stephen, Bananas, Anthony, Cory and Cara made it across...not so for Mitch, Tom and Vinny. In the end, Team Red once again triumphs.

> The Vote
When it came to the vote and who Team Blue would put in as challenge losers yet again, we had both a sense of things made easy and things made harder. For the former, just as it was in EP 6 the previous week, we again have a player going in by acclimation as Abe's bloodline Mike volunteers himself into the Pit. His decision cut the voting task in half, which leaves Team Red with only one person to put in. And when the winners deliberate, Tom takes advantage of the chance to put Cara's bloodline Jamie in, but she, Abe and everyone else decide otherwise in sending Stephen into combat. This is, in essence, the best of both worlds: Bananas achieves his mission of breaking up the alliance, while Abe got his wish of competing against Tom - albeit in their various brothers. This becomes an all-out battle for Cara's affection, and it set up a fun and entertaining elimination.

> Home Wrecker
We've had great elimination battles over the years on this Challenge, and there have been some rather cooler ones as well. The EP-7 one just added to both of those lists as Stephen and Mike would face each other in "Home Wrecker." The title of it says simply what this is all about, as the combatants must break down an entire mock living room including every piece of all articles of it located inside -- couches, tables, TV's and framed Challenge pictures -- into tiny pieces that can fit through a hole in the wall.
Despite not being in the elimination itself, Abram is clearly the most active participant in the battle as he does everything he can to pump Mike up, both before the Pit began and after the opening horn. It becomes so much so that Abe's nose begins to bleed in the 70* night intensiveness. And as he jumps up & down with blood smearing all around his face, it encourages Mike all throughout the match, as the once reserved brother goes into another zone in becoming a destroyer and wins the battle going away...knocking heads with Abe after their win.

> The Aftermath and an Awkward After Show
This week, we have an extra item to add to our usual 5 Things wrap, which comes with the aftermath to that battle where when the group comes home, both Abe and JB are pleased with how it all came out, but it's Cara who shows a great deal of concern to cousin Jamie. There, she tells him that he doesn't want to be with him anymore after breaking up many times. She adds, "It's an unhealthy relationship. I'm so glad I have you. God I wish he never came."
Then comes the After Show which saw its own kind of drama take place after the fact, with it spilling into the stage. Abe & Cara were guests of Zuri Hall, along with Bananas, Vince and Thomas, and even before she went on-stage there was already drama backstage with the couple. After giving her side of the story, Abe comes on set to give his side, but passed on seeing the hookup clip we at home got to see and wants to get into it with Tom. Abe doesn't give Cara the stage to say something as she takes responsibility for the hookup with Tom, and then he & her walk off. It was no doubt an awkward scenario to be in.

 WINNERS OF THE NIGHT
Without much to add after that Wrap, I'll make my winners of the night descriptions short & sweet...
- Michael: Going into last week, we didn't hear or see much of Abe's relatively calm brother, but after what we saw he's put himself on that consideration list. Being able to prove himself by volunteering himself in without any voting and then backing it up in the Pit really put him on that short list for a possible Clutch Performance award in the season-end awards. Cara's on target when she observed, "This is made for Mike. He has the same blood as Abram," and being used to doing this in Montana, it was right up his alley.
- Jenna: After what we saw from her at the end of last season and now during this season, Jenna has added more to her candidacy for a Breakout Performer award in the one-liners we heard from her last week. Brian Cohen may not have been happy to have her on his fantasy team at first, but now he can be thankful that he did in her forcing him to eat those words he had for her in the preview.

 #DCExtraTime
A double dose of ExtraTime for you on this Wrap, and we have both the ridiculous and the sublime covered here...first, the former.

THE CHALLENGE MEETS ROBOT CHICKEN
Outside of the MTV world my regular viewing habits see me spend more time watching sports content and YouTube than most other TV channels. In fact, the only time I would watch certain general interest cable networks would be if they are showing sports content (thus, only watch TNT for the NBA, HBO for boxing or its exceptional programming & so on). But it's likely you've heard of Cartoon Network's late-night animation block, Adult Swim. And last week, we had a familiar show and faces crash the bash of a stop-motion series that's the brainchild of Seth Green.
Robot Chicken got the chance to do its own take of The Challenge when it did a brief segment in its first episode of the year over New Year's weekend. TJ Lavin, Johnny Bananas and Sarah provided voices to the segment which offered an offshoot to that Challenge the ladder two were on, Exes 2, and in his usual manner TJ gave them a twist. Instead of bringing on familiar challengers to face them, TJ brought on X-Men's Wolverine & Jean Gray to the house to cause their own brand of drama.
Bananas touted how the show is "the fifth pro sport" by way of his scars, while Jean complained of her DVR being erased amidst the house drama play out in that same animation technique that was once the domain of "Death Match." We even had the great comic book character make out with a girl tagged as "Nany" as well, even being decked by a lamp by nobody. Key line from that short but sweet part came from the Exes 2 champ: "This changes everything." And even her character herself wouldn't stand the duo as they would emerge victorious. But after getting TJ's mark of approval, Wolverine gets eliminated by way of his violence, and she is the one left standing.

Sorry if I'm doing that rare instance of doing a recap of another show and spoiling those who didn't see it with a full write-up, but several of my followers posted their excitement of seeing their favorite show on A/S. This includes the picture posted here from Twitter follower Luis Enrique (@Itslluna - once featured in a Challenge special) as it was supposedly from after an elimination Bananas & Sarah were in, and saw the X-Men duo came in to bring that twist to the show. Of course, as we told you here last week, we know about what happened to poor JB when he got put into elimination by Sarah on the spot after the last pre-Final mission on Exes 2. And if the drumbeat is right in that talk on the grapevine, it may not be the last time you'll hear those two in the same sentence... Stay tuned, of course.

AN EMOTIONAL HOMECOMING
From the silly to the serious, and as you know I'm an overall MTV fan. Yes, I love the RW/Challenge franchise and AYTO more than any other show, but I've long been welcoming to others too. My appetite for great storytelling built by a life-long love of The Real World and the open nature of social media has something to do with that. And along with RW XXXI in Las Vegas, whatever the next MTV show I will be joining the bandwagon in the coming months will be the 20th non-Trifecta show that I've befriended in my time in social world.
The first week of the 2016 MTV slate - its 35th Anniversary year - saw it being headlined by the premiere of the channel's foray into fantasyland, The Shannara Chronicles. In fact one of my HS friends, who's also good social friends with Curtis from AYTO Season 2, tweeted to me on Instagram that he's a fan of the book series and is looking forward to seeing its TV adaptation - the channel's boldest move in its 5-year expansion into scripted fare. And there's new Teen Wolf as well, just as two alums of the show announcing that they have come out.
And as far as this Challenge season is concerned, while there have been twists aplenty and lots taking place, the overarching theme of this season has been family. We've documented here a few times of how some of the competitors have dealt with some personal drama that was documented on TV that brings out the utmost in them that makes them relatable to all of us. But the drama of what's happened in Turkey so far certainly pales in comparison to a kind of family drama that's taken place across the Atlantic in Michigan and outside the Trifecta.
As mentioned here recently, I began watching Teen Mom last year, mainly influenced by yours truly becoming an uncle more times than you can count since 2008. And Amber from the OG foursome was one of my DCBLOG Award winners in my Reality Debrief in overcoming all obstacles to get to where she is now. But she isn't the only person in the first generation of the show who has come back from such a deep abyss...in fact, there's two of them from the same family.
Last March, we discussed one half of the franchise's own perfect match, Catelynn Lowell & Tyler Baltierra and his life-changing moment which brought about the subject of bullying that so many can relate to. When he was 12, after his troubled father had been released on parole, and three years after being the victim of a sexual assault, he had strongly considered taking his own life. But Tyler thinking twice during his dark childhood most definitely saved him at the last minute.
As the junior high sweethearts marked the 1st birthday on New Year's Day of their second child Novalee (their first one, Carly, was given up for adoption upon birth due to them being young back in '09), the touching moment of last week's double premiere was the release from jail of Butch Baltierra after a 4-year prison sentence. Life has certainly not been easy for the families of the newlyweds despite the couple's long & stable romance, which saw Cate & Ty's parents also get married too, only for their's to not work out in the end.
After that long time being separated, Dad came full circle as a free man who has changed a considerable amount from when viewers last saw him. Upon him arriving at the house, there was nothing but joy for the family, and I tweeted, "That's a good sight to see there. Never give up." And this couldn't come at a more perfect time, just in time for the biggest day of the couple's lives: them becoming man & wife. The bachelor & bachelorette parties just took place on Monday's episode and despite fears of what might happen, the relationship is still alive & well.
When you consider what's happened to Abe & Cara in the past week, it reaffirms the volatile nature of reality TV couples: sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But when true love does come on the shows we love, it becomes a great & refreshing thing. The Challenge has Brad & Tori, Real World has Wisconsin Congressman Sean Duffy & wife Rachel Campos, and of course Amber & Ethan from Are You The One? Season 1. The TM/16P franchise has its own true love romance to hang its hat on in Catelynn & Tyler, and soon viewers will see them go through their best day ever.

DC ExtraTime affords this blog the chance to go beyond the episodes and tell the stories of the MTV world and its people - long & short and spanning the emotional palette. The next dedicated DC ET post (that is, one that stands on its own and not at the end of our episode posts) will mark the 2-year anniversary of the original AYTO premiere with a look at a comeback story just as inspiring as those we've shared with you here. And if comebacks from life struggles or anything else is incredible, you won't believe the remarkable comeback a member of the Originals endured around this time a few years ago. That comes your way here early next week around the Jan. 21 anniversary date.

▪   ▪   ▪   ▪   ▪

And that will bring to a close the Week 6 Bloodlines posts. DCBLOG will, of course, be back over the weekend to bring you Week 7 and Episode 8 as a popular Challenge alum arrives on-shore in Turkey on Wednesday. But obviously, EP 7 offered plenty of fodder for fellow webcast hosts to dig in and discuss on their various shows, and here's your roadmap...

● A new podcast that has joined those who cover The Challenge is KFC Radio by Kevin Clancy of Barstool Sports (not the KFC restaurant chain), and his No Quitters Podcast. Having done Chicago sports talk for some time, Kevin started covering The Challenge this season, and this past week he was joined by TJ Lavin as they discussed Episode 7 and everything's that gone on so far this season in Turkey. Check out their podcast here, and previous ones on SoundCloud.
● With everything that happened last week, there's no doubt that Brian Cohen (@BusDriversRoute) and Ali Lasher (@LashsTweets) had plenty to discuss on the MTV RHAP on Rob Has A Podcast. The duo got to discuss last week's episode and After Show on their EP 7 recap which is on this link, and saw them talk Abe & Cara's meltdown, the fallout from the week, the alliances and more. Also check out Brian's Bus Drivers Route blog to see the updated fantasy Challenge leaderboard and a newfound appreciation of The Bachelor, plus previous shows here & YouTube.
● There's our favorite video recap host, Ace Nichols (@AceNichols33), who you can check out her recaps for all the Bloodlines episodes on her YouTube hub. This week is no exception, except that the person who does her intro is someone special...check out who it is in her recap here. And also check out AfterBuzz TV and their recaps at www.afterbuzztv.com.
● Check out Ashley Weitzel-Hill (@AshleyWeitzel) and two recent webcast chats - the first two of this year in the Trifecta world - with Candice and with Shane, both on Google+ on YouTube. Slated for next week (and rescheduled from one that was supposed to take place this week but put off at last minute) is her next one as the man at the heart of the early season drama, Tony, will join her to discuss everything you want to know from him.
● And check out Andrew Kirk (@CSUGradAKirk) and all of his MTV coverage on YouTube, SpreeCast, BlogTalkRadio and the BTRTV blog - including his must-listen chats with many across the MTV Trifecta. By the way, through a chat we had on Twitter the other day, we talked about me moved his & other fans' reaction to this Wrap permanently, as I wrote last week, in the interest of other users to make the experience here easy. As I say, all of you are considered.

Lastly as we inch towards the 2nd anniversary of Are You The One's debut, a member of that heralded cast and of Exes 2 has returned to our screens with a month of fresh, new web videos. To mark #Johnuary, John Jacobs (@MaybachDiamonds) is releasing a new video every day all month, which has seen him do a "Man on the Street" on Hollywood Boulevard, enjoy time on the couch with comedian & Tampa radio host Johnny B., and of course stand-up comedy. Check out JJ's #Johnuary videos plus his original AYTO audition tape and more on his YouTube channel, and this interview he did with local radio on SoundCloud.

While you watch the episodes - if you're out west - and a return of a familiar face to Challenge world in something that you'll likely have a tissue box handy, join the conversation at #DCChallenge... you may see your thoughts in this weekend's posts. In addition to tonight's Challenge (and TM OG as well), a busy sports weekend awaits on DCNOW, with a full slate of NFL Divisional Playoff action, plus Deontay Wilder looks to cap off a great week for Alabama sports fans as he defends his WBC Heavyweight Title in New York's Madison Square Garden.
And as for here, make sure to bookmark DCBLOG for full MTV Trifecta coverage: Pulse diaries, Wraps, dedicated ExtraTime posts and all. With "The Blogosphere's Most Unique and Insightful MTV Show Coverage," it's a must-read. I'm also working on a special series of football posts that will be up starting with NFL Championship Weekend as the countdown to Super Bowl 50 begins, and you can expect plenty of coverage here & on DCNOW with plans to be on-site at the various events here in the Bay. And of course, follow me on Twitter & Instagram @DC408Dxtr.

And after the situation that I discussed here on the 'Pulse earlier this week, thanks to everyone for your continued support and loyalty...you're always appreciated. For now, until I talk to you tonight on DCNOW and back here over the weekend, thanks for reading and talk to you soon.
