MTV Trifecta - Countdown to Real World Seattle: Bad Blood

BY DC CUEVA
@DC408Dxtr / @DC408DxNow

Hi, hello, what's up, and welcome back to our coverage of the ongoing story of the MTV Trifecta on DCBLOG. We hope you enjoyed your summer as we saw two interesting seasons of the shows we follow the most, as well as a grand Olympiad in Rio de Janeiro. But now, many of you are back to school & college, others are back to work after having their summer trips and we are back to work here after a fairly short offseason of sorts covering our strongest passion on this site.
To us, there is something we surround like no other site in the blogosphere: one of television's longest running franchises of The Real World and The Challenge, and the new kid on the block of this threesome - Are You The One?. This site and its webmaster fan give this triple the affectionate name of the MTV Trifecta, and we treat this the same way networks do with the NFL: wall-to-wall coverage being covered from every angle wire-to-wire from the preseason buzz right thru the final act in several months from now - the holidays when this is all done & dusted.
The most recent cycle of this triple crown, which began 13 months ago, saw two comebacks from a money losing blackout to salvage cash in the Hawaiian islands, a racially-infused cat fight in downtown Las Vegas, a red head win her first Challenge and a betrayal that made the Trifecta's biggest name the most hated as well. Needless to say, it was a most eventful twelve months and we very much needed a little time away - albeit just a 65-day offseason and nearly 2 months to the day after the Season 4 AYTO finale in August.

Now, our focus turns as it should to what's ahead and a new season of the O.G. of not just the Trifecta but all of MTV as well, as the Real World will have its cable record 32nd season premiering this Wednesday, October 12th with a double shot of back to back episodes. While we'll still have the show's unique storytelling and relatable people, as in the fairly recent past there will once again be a twist to this show as this season's cast will have to live with people from their past who harbor some animosity with. This is sure to bring more of the fireworks this TV original loves to bring us, which sees the show return to Seattle - host to Season 7 back in 1998, infamous for Stephen's slap on Irene.
We are into October and as we enter this last week of the countdown to the new season, coming up we'll look ahead to Real World Seattle: Bad Blood and introduce you to the seven strangers and their soon to be roommates which they will be forced to live with, just as we saw with the Ex-Plosion couples back in San Francisco two years ago. Plus, just as we did to launch the last cycle before AYTO Season 3 last year - for which one of this season's castmates has their roots in, we'll also catch up with what's been going with some of the people of the Trifecta since the AYTO Season 4 finale.
So, as we always like to say here, dust off your name tag, dress nicely and Join In with us after the jump as DCBLOG kicks off a new campaign of the MTV Trifecta and our preview of Real World Seattle: Bad Blood from the Pacific Northwest, coming up next.

#DCExtraTime Presents:
 SINCE YOU'VE BEEN GONE...

First before we preview RW Bad Blood, we begin this cycle with the part of our coverage that usually appears at the end of our weekly episode posts rather than here at the beginning, and that would be DC ExtraTime. It's where we present original feature stories offering sidelights and perspective on the people and the stories of the MTV Trifecta, from interesting tidbits on the castmates you won't find anywhere else to linking the pop culture of the moment to this ecosystem.
For this first installment, once again as we did to begin the last cycle last fall, we'd like to update you on what's happened during what will be 65 days in between the premiere of this upcoming season come Wednesday and the finale of the last season in the most recent cycle. In these cases, it's a reunion, romances, a proposal and, of course, a baby. Here's what's been happening "Since You've Been Gone."

 FRESH MEAT REUNION
First up, some Challenge nostalgia from up in Montana. Ten years ago, the fifth major pro sport got to welcome a slew of new people to the fold when it introduced the concept of Fresh Meat. In 2006, cast members who were not on either a Real World or Road Rules season were first invited to compete along with the establishment and bring some much needed new blood. In Australia, it was where we were introduced to Kenny, Evan, "Big Easy" Eric, and of course the late Diem Brown, who all got to compete alongside Wes, Derrick, Coral, Katie and the like.
Along with the first two on that list, someone from that first FM alumni class who would go on to greater success was Evelyn Smith. We first met her as that softball player from Westchester, NY who would become one of the strongest women to compete on this show, and even prouder of who she is as a lesbian as well. An early exit in her first try would then be followed by being part of the winning team on Inferno 3 with Abe, Derrick and Kenny, beating Bananas, Paula and Susie. She was also on the veterans team who lost the Gauntlet III final because of Big Easy, but it's what happened the very next season on The Island that became a game changer for her. Late in the affair, longtime vet Paula assumed she would be in the boat with Kenny, Johnny and Derrick, and Ev made a deal with Mr. Beautiful before the last elimination, which eventually saw Paula be left behind as Ev and the guys won.
It was the most notable backstabbing The Challenge has seen up until last August, and the bickering wasn't done yet: on Fresh Meat II both ladies faced off in an Exile elimination that determined which alliance would control the game, and Ev won barely but fell short of the final. And of course, Ev and Paula were paired up on Rivals I, which we profiled here last summer, and they went on to win. Since winning her last Challenge, Ev has since turned her attention on pursuing a much bigger challenge outside the glitz and glamour of the camera's: going to that ever prestigious institution known as Harvard University and applying in law school, and now she's practicing law.
Over the summer, Evelyn became the latest person to fly up to the peace and calm of the Frontier of the North and hang out with the team she & Paula defeated heads-up in that final in Argentina: Laurel and Cara Maria - who themselves were also Fresh Meat alums when they debuted as part of the FM II generation in Vancouver in 2010. A SnapChat story on Cara's SnapChat hub captured them enjoying the unique atmosphere of this unique part of the country. She captioned, "Evelyn. Love this girl. She doesnt need to make alliances or follow the crowd to win. She is tough enough on her own. Thats what i respect. She met My horse and enjoyed some cowgirl montana life. The champ was here πŸ’ͺ."

 AYTO AFTERMATCH: ROMANCES
Meanwhile, just as it was with Zak & Hannah and Britni & Chuck from last year's cast of lovable singles, there's a few romances brewing among those in the latest class of newbies of the Trifecta community who recovered from a late blackout to end the season on a high in the Truth Booth en route to $750,000 on Season 4 of Are You The One this summer.
• First, a couple who had to go through that morale crushing moment of getting no lights and losing $250,000 in week 8 in Hawaii were Stephen & Julia. We saw him get into a fight on the matchup patio with Giovanni during that season while we saw her have to deal with John and had to stave off a late challenge for her heart by Gio. But after they sacrificed their relationship temporarily for the sake of the game after that blackout, the Philly native and Louisana girl got back together out on the west coast after the season finale and now they are official, thanks in no small part to pictures they've posted on their Instagrams. They now call my world, the Bay Area, home.
• Meanwhile, perfect match Cameron & Mikala didn't spend nearly as much time in the house as everyone else as they were sent in fairly early in week 3, emerged out as the quickest Truth Booth match in the show's young history and became the first couple to be paired up in every matchup for the entire season (yes, not even the show's royal couple - Amber & Ethan of Season 1 - can lay claim to that very statistic). Since then, those two have also joined with Stephen & Julia and taken their talents to Cali, where awaiting them to shack up with them in SoCal is Sam, who jokingly admits to being the third wheel of sorts to them, and whose own perfect match romance with fellow Chicagoan Alyssa didn't turn out in the end.
• And there's a romance among both a newbie and an alum. Tori & Morgan were paired up in the last two match ups and that turned out to be a key difference in them having the cash. The man who loves playing with fire (proof) is friends and roommates with Mike from season 3 and the girl who put Gio to sleep in their finale rap battle was introduced to the vet by her perfect match and it's been a romantic ride ever since. They became official towards the closing part of the summer and it does prove that love in the AYTO world doesn't have to come inside that mansion with 18 other people. This isn't the last time you'll hear from him here...more on that shortly; neither for her as she and some of her cast took over one of New York's biggest events...more on that on next week's premier week posts.

● WES ENGAGED, AND ANOTHER BABY
Finally, there's an engagement to talk about here, and this might be the sign that a longstanding vet is about to turn his attention from facing Bananas to turning full time to being the great entrepreneur he is (read more here) and getting close to his perfect match. Last month, longtime Challenge vet Wes Bergmann went to a Kansas City Royals game with his girlfriend Amanda, and in the home of the world champs - Kaufman Stadium - went down to one knee and brought out of his pocket an engagement ring. She, of course, uttered yes, and now after many an exes his history of love is now complete and he can finally settle down with her. Of course, we send our congrats to Ginger, along with his RW Austin castmate Lacey who this past weekend tied the knot.
And lastly, there's more baby news coming: a member of the AYTO 4 cast in Tyler Norman, who didn't find love in Hawaii, announced via his Instagram shortly after his season that he and his girlfriend are expecting a baby.

THE BUZZ BEGINS
(Advisory: contains adult language, please read with discretion)

Now to the present, and the countdown to getting this all started once again. And what better and appropriate way for us to kick off our Real World coverage than with a signature feature of our Trifecta offerings: DC SocialPulse. It's only here that we bring you, the fans, the other show that takes place concurrent to the episodes airing on MTV: the social interaction of cast members and alumni as they watch the episodes with all of us in seeing what they've been through once again, this time with more than just family & friends. The 'Pulse diaries bring that episode interaction - plus its lead up and aftermath - to you on this site shortly after you get to watch the episodes, and we'll again bring you these timeline-style running diaries here every weekend during the season.
Here's how the buzz started back on Wednesday, September 7th when the cast was revealed just a few days after the traditional end of summer on Labor Day, plus when the trailer dropped a week later. And after this mini 'Pulse Extra, we'll introduce you to the new cast and their backgrounds, as well as look at what to expect this season.

WHAT TO EXPECT... AND THE TWIST
Over the long and proud 25-year history of this reality TV original, Real World has seen bad blood take place among roommates, from huge fights in the house to bickering that would even take some to later Challenges. It's one of the best aspects of this show - and of the Trifecta ecosystem, and it more than provides for the perfect context to this new season, where our new batch of seven strangers will eventually find themselves living in the same house with someone with whom they share some ill feelings with. And that iconic track by Taylor Swift off of her ultra-successful album 1989 provides a fitting title for this new season: Bad Blood.

Season 32 will begin, like other Real World seasons before it, with all of the usual excitement, anticipation and optimism that comes with these seven strangers moving into their new house and city, getting to know each other and being on their own for the first time as this new chapter in their lives begin. But while they believe that they have dodged a bullet in not having to deal with any twist whatsoever in having an old-school RW season, they actually have no idea that seven other people are about to rain on their parade. And what better place for this to all go down than on the usually rainy city of Seattle, WA, with the Capitol Hill neighborhood - a hub of the city's nightlife & entertainment and home of the city's counterculture and LGBT communities - will be where their loft will be situated at.
Ex-Plosion saw the roommates' exes famously move to San Francisco after the originals took a weekend lake trip for some house work to be done in the dark, while Skeletons saw people from their past fly up to Chicago for visits throughout the season. And here, our new roommates will not only be forming friendships, hooking up with one another and enjoying what the Pacific Northwest has to offer, eventually they'll have to deal with they'll have to put up with. For this case, the originals will be given the chance to revisit a really difficult relationship they had to endure and deal with them head on.
Shortly after the Seattle seven moves into their pad, another group of seven strangers will meet up in where the last non-twist Real World took place: down the way in Portland. But the seven new people are anything but strangers to the originals, as each of them harbor some serious bad blood with one member of the group in the Emerald City -- whether they'd be exes, rivals, frenemies or estranged family members. The two groups will find themselves ultimately on a collision course as the kids up north have no idea they're in for. The newbies will hop on an RV and take a Road Rules-like road trip up the I-5 to Seattle to surprise the original seven and move into their house much to their dismay.
Like what we've seen on the sister show of this triple many a time, once those seven new people move into their house, they must learn to co-exist with the originals in the house, work out their differences, get beyond their past conflicts, resolve the unfinished business they have endured and mend things in the house and in this atmosphere where more than friends and family are watching their every move. There's obviously no money at stake in RW like what we see on the two other shows of this crown, but just as we've seen in the three installments of Rivals, the two Exes Challenges and one's original season, the opportunity to start anew is of course priceless.
A few things are for certain: this is the largest cast for a single season in the history of TV's most-iconic reality series at 14 people, besting the Ex-Plosion cast by two housemates (only Jamie & Ashley were spared in not having their exes move into the San Francisco house). Like what we've seen in Challenges past, there will sure to be new friendships formed, new rivalries and new flames to come out of this whole experience. Perhaps, the bad blood could be too big of a thing to overcome, and the dynamics may change in an instant that if they can work it out, it'll be worth this whole experience. And of course, there will be a lot of drama and, yes, lots of bad blood all ahead of us.

MEET THE ROOMIES... AND BAD BLOOD
Now, let's meet the new and diverse cast of seven strangers and their seven bad blood counterparts who will shack up in the house, along with their history and background. And note that their names here begin with the original castmate in Seattle and their bad blood who will eventually move into the house. They're also linked to their Twitter accounts so you can give them a follow there (or follow me @DC408Dxtr for Follow Friday sweeps of the cast or this custom cast list).

ANIKA & WILL - New York City / Philadelphia: First, a couple of exes who could've easily been casted on that Ex-Plosion season: for three years, Brooklynite Anika and Philly guy Will dated each other and she was annoyed so much that he couldn't match her dominance. Anika feels Will still has a place in her heart but he insists that he'll never put himself into that position of him acting as second hand to her. Sometimes they still have to be in the same place as Will is close buds with Anika's brother, but she doesn't like how he's around the Walker family. Plus, there's the looming cloud of "Willy from Philly" potentially becoming a dad when he and his rebound girl found out they're expecting a baby. That is a big point of contention considering how they also discussed possibilities of having kids. For someone who's bossy and aggressive, it wasn't a surprise that she got angry when this baby news got to her. Despite having not been together for some time, there's nonetheless some unresolved angst between Anika & Will, once being hot and heavy and still having jealousy issues. There's sure to be some explosive fireworks on the west coast.

JORDAN & ORLANA - Chicago / Ann Arbor, MI: Next, a couple Midwest frenemies: for years, a wild & sexual girly girl from Chicago and a hippy tomboy from near Ann Arbor were besties. But for Jordan and Orlana, this tight knit friendship they had soon went cold when Jordan spotted on social media video of Orlana's crush, and the ladder felt betrayed by her friend, especially given the video recorded was shot inside his bedroom. Orlana is known to be ΓΌber-jealous when it comes to men, and she was jaw dropped that Jordan would let this occur, and also for her friend to put sex, partying & superficiality over their longtime friendship...and that's not all. Jordan also forced Orlana into a double date situation where J shacked up in the bedroom as Lana was left on the couch with a guy she calls "creepy" and didn't like. And there was Jordan's preference to be self centered in this friendship too, along with the issue of race and Orlana believing her friend isn't interested in black men despite J's mom being black. Their families are hopeful this will be mended, but of course anything's possible.

KATRINA & ANNA - Gainesville, FL / Orlando: Now, a couple of feuding siblings from Florida: For many years, Katrina and Anna have butted heads over just about everything, and have a habit to go through long bouts of silence resentment toward one another, usually starting by Anna's mood swings, and Katrina's selfish tendencies. They've had many disagreements go as far as the physical type, and one night police were summoned after one such fight at their mom's driveway. You might describe this bond like a Katy Perry song: "Hot N Cold" -- they could head out to the beach and have a wild time together, but those hangouts always then into fireworks almost at the snap of a finger. Although these sisters are opposites in every way, they'll still defend each other, but when they're off, they can go months without speaking, and that's where it stands right now. The root of this is their now divorced parents, and the younger Katrina remembers the older Anna to be "the perfect child" and her to be the opposite. There's a dynamic that will sure to explode yet again when they meet, and the house will be the big test for the Stack siblings to resolve or extend these many problems.

MIKE & PETER - New York City: While they filmed this season this summer, we discussed that potential crossover, and this is it: if what happened to AYTO Originals Adam & Ryan is proof, then best friends shouldn't live together. For Mike from AYTO Season 3, he moved in with best buddy Peter (who won Million Dollar Maze Runner two years ago), and both were party partners in crime. But when Peter broke the cardinal rule of no girlfriends, and of him moving a girl he just met into their apartment, this friendship started to turn. Plus, there's the trip they took to Miami where Peter lent $2,000 to Mike, who was upfront about being broke. He promised to pay Peter back as soon as he had money, and of course the two lived it up on South Beach. As time went on, Mike became frustrated with Peter's girl as tension started, and when she left him Peter blamed Mike for tearing them apart. Mike moved out as Peter's debt loomed, and later sending a apology message to him but never returned the call as he called him "the worst roommate" ever. In all, one move changed it all for these friends, and as they return to this channel after winning money in their first appearances here, now they come to the Northwest to settle the score.

ROBBIE & JENNIFER - New Jersey: Now, another exes story: for New Jersey DJ Robbie (aka "Masserobbiee"), he first met Jennifer at one of his many gigs and at closing time she gave in to his charm in spite of her first impressions not being good. They were together for eight months, but halfway through that his jealous nature emerged. There, the slightly older Jen (two years his senior) was above legal drinking age during their romance and enjoyed going out to bars and clubs, and her party lifestyle left the then underage Robbie up in arms and, as a result of this, he didn't trust her around other guys. It then led to both acting out to make the other jealous, and on some nights this behavior led to shouting matches in front of public view. The one that broke the camel's back came a year & a half ago, when one of their coworkers posted socially a photo of him & Jen hanging out and tagged Robbie in that pic. Jen feels there's no explanation of why they broke up and never got some closure to this relationship, but it did lead to one last blowup. Afterwards, he blocked her number and all her social media, and sent her a video of him burning everything she bought him when they were together - quite an end to a relationship that ended up in flames. Now, they're together again in Seattle.

THEO & KASSIUS - Chicago: To a guys beef: For Chicago cousins Theo and Kassius, they were thick as thieves and very close. They roomed together at Indiana State University, where Theo had a free-ride football scholarship, but it would also be where it would eventually create a rift that family ties couldn't even prevent. There, Theo warned Kassius not to keep marijuana in their dorm room because if he was caught he would suffer the consequences. The former's story goes that Kassius did not heed those warnings and hid the pot in one of Theo's milk bottles. One day, police busted into their dorm room after cops were clued to marijuana smell at the complex, and as that pot was discovered, Theo shouldered the blame and Kassius watched without a word. The ladder has a different view of tall that as he claims the weed was Theo's, and when the cops arrived, they spilt up possessions that were searched. Authorities found not only that but counterfeit money Theo had in his wallet as well, and eventually he was cuffed away, spent a year on probation and was kicked off his team. The penalties were huge, and saw Theo's thriving football career, which also saw him make state high school history and had NFL aspirations, left in ruins, and as a result Theo very much disowned Kassius. They have a strong competitive fire, and Theo wasn't happy that Kassius was also interviewed for this very Real World season and K says his cousin's jealousy & anger caused the fall out. Stay tuned.

TYARA & KIMBERLY - Atlanta: Lastly, there's the rivalry that's spilled over from the schools of Atlanta into social world: Tyara and Kim went to high school together there, and both have never liked each other. These classmates have dueling social media platforms which serve as foundation of this strife, with Kim's strong Tumblr presence and Tyara being dominant on Instagram (327K followers) as well as on Twitter (132K). But, the main issue of this beef is Tyara claiming that Kim posted videos on her Tumblr site mocking her, and of Kim's followers bullying Tyara in Kim's name. Elsewhere, Kim recalls Tyara making a video of herself speaking in a British accent which Kim believes is a fake accent and didn't exist when they went to school. Kim believes she was only bringing that to light, and Tyara says she has family across the pond, where her accent originated. But again, that's not all: When Kim and her high school rapper boyfriend split up, Tyara immediately snapped him up, which in turn hurt Kim. No matter whose side you're on in this beef, there's obviously no love lost between these girls who are used to the spotlight. Tya will be dissecting every move her rival makes, and Kim's inability to keep her mouth shut will make fireworks in this house almost an inevitability between these two who despise each other.

 WELCOME TO TEAM MTV
Now, the following message - which always go last in these posts whenever new castmates make their MTV debuts - applies to six of the originals and six of the bad blood, as this doesn't apply to the two guys we've seen before on the MTV airwaves.

Finally, a word to the cast and if we haven't talked yet in social world, then "Welcome to Team MTV," to the Real World family and to the large community of what I call the MTV Trifecta. You all got to film this season in one of this country's great cities and regions -- Seattle, WA in the Pacific Northwest -- and just enjoyed a bit of R&R after you returned home near summer's end. But as we head into the first weeks of autumn, you are all now into this period of readiness and you're all ready to get this season started on October 12th.
I always tell other casts that this anticipation you all have is the same Mike had for his AYTO season that it feels like you are all kids counting down to Christmas and opening those presents, and I'm sure he's talked to you about what it's like to handle everything that will come your way. Another great castmate who I've followed since I began the social period of my 17 years following The Real World and the MTV world - Trey from St. Thomas, wrote about how he had to endure the experience of being on his RW and two challenges, and check out the post here on this site too.
This won't apply to Magic Mike as he's been through this ringer before, but to the newbies I'm sure the anticipation you have for RW Bad Blood is reaching the kind of feeling you've never experienced in your lives, and all the month's worth of hype, talk and buzz will culminate in a matter of days. The real show is now underway: the promotion & publicity departments bringing this thing to life with the promos airing on TV, the episodes being fine-tuned for air, and the opportunity for fans like me to talk to you. I've grown a solid rapport with the MTV family the past several years, and I look forward to talking to all of you in social world as the season goes along. And if history proves itself again in having interacted with every new cast of the Trifecta since I joined Twitter on St. Thomas premiere night four years ago, we're well on our way to have an awesome time here.
I am one of the Trifecta's biggest fans and one who now devotes energies to translating that lifelong passion into covering it here on DCBLOG with my must-read posts. But I'm not the only one in the large network of fans who supports this show; you'll be interacting with many of them also during this countdown and the season itself. And although there's so many people too many to mention, there's one to single out: my twitter bud Andrew Kirk has covered this MTV world at the same time as I, and he & other webcast hosts look forward to having you on his shows during the season, and discussing your every move on there too as the both of us watch and cover this Real World season.
The family of those who've been on Real World, as well as its related cousins in The Challenge and Road Rules, and now AYTO, is among the most prestigious alumni communities anywhere, and now you'll be joining this elite company with so many great people along with the broader MTV family. You'll have the opportunity to meet these alums of what I call the Trifecta, both at the various appearances you'll make, and of course when you do future Challenges as well. I'm sure they'll welcome you with open arms here socially as we head towards this Wednesday.
To everyone on this new cast: welcome to the Real World family, and Team MTV. I've been a longtime Real World fan and really looking forward to seeing what you all got for us this season with this twist, all the big time drama this show is known for and this season taking place in a great city of ours. Good luck and look forward to having your company this fall & wintr. And most of all, savor this final week of being relative unknowns to everybody outside of your inner circles...your lives are gonna change forever come next week when this ride begins for real.
