DC WRAP: The Challenge Invasion - The Finale

BY DC CUEVA
■ @DC408Dxtr  TW / IG / YT

As you begin this week and get through the stress of this Monday, how about if you can take some of that stress off with this DCBLOG WRAP of The Challenge Invasion - the last one of this season after this past week's finale. Last week saw both a reaffirmation of the champions' throne by one of this era's best-ever competitors, and the coronation for an underdog queen that no one expected would make this quick ascension to the top step of the female victory podium.
Ahead, we'll be breaking from our format of the past several months in dedicating this entire Wrap to the finale of Invasion of the Champions with a recap of the two-part final, bring you one more time into the Strategy Room for some final analysis, and the classified final fantasy scoring results and our Twitter poll. And after that, in honor of a newly minted queen, we'll be focusing in on the fashion side of the girl who we first saw in San Francisco and has certainly come a long way since then.
It's all ahead on DCBLOG's WRAP of The Challenge Invasion finale.

 THINGS TO KNOW
The Challenge Invasion Final

GOING FOR A SWIM: We begin with Day 1, and brains and endurance taking precedent starting with a swim from a barge to land and then back on a paddle board, and it includes a puzzle. Nelson & Ashley, Nicole & Cory and champs CT & Camila pair up for the opening stanza, and out of the gate the champions head out into the lead, and the wind current becomes tough for Nelson as maneuver and falls behind. Eventually, everyone does make it on shore, as Camila figures out their land puzzle first, followed by Ashley & Nelson and Nicole & Cory...through the ladder do not have any clue what this means. Once they get back on the barge, the champs solve their Challenge puzzle first to grab the Day 1 lead, followed by Ashley & Nelson. Cory & Nicole time out at the puzzle, then paddle to the barge as if they're surfers in Hawaii, and do complete it to nab 3rd.
THE JUNGLE: Day 2 sees the most-grueling of the three days of competition, with a focus on stamina, strength, and an appetite too. The teams are re-paired: Cory & Camila, Nelson & Nicole, and CT & Ashley as they will race into the jungle and complete a series of checkpoints before racing back to TJ Lavin at day's end to stop the clock. The first station sees everyone pick two plates featuring rather gross food and eat them, and the menu includes worms, crickets and eggs which were fermented with horse pee... no way I can have those. The two N's take care of things first, followed by CT & Ashley and Camila & Cory, though the Brazilian got ahead of him and is forced to wait on her partner. And yes, there's a lot of throwing up, too.
Checkpoint #2 sees the teams work together to cross a rope thrust from the air, all while holding ropes...and they must be precise: if they fall off this tightrope they must begin again from scratch. Just as it was at the plates, Nelson & Nicole make short work of the task in a single trip and as it turns out, gain big time. CT & Ashley fall twice before taking the maximum time of 30 minutes to move on, and so do Cory & Camila after she falls and he kicks himself for them not making up valuable time. Then on station #3, the teams swim into a swamp to gain more puzzle pieces, which they take care of that swiftly.
And at that last stop, the teams have to move different sized puzzle pieces from different posts, where they can only move one piece at any one time and must make sure that it goes from smallest to largest from top to bottom. This turns out to be the turning point this day, as Ashley & CT catch Nicole & Nelson to take the lead as the N's find themselves yelling at one another. The two teams do make it to TJ at day's end, but all eyes at the end are on Cory & Camila - who after getting close since the merge have all but imploded with no communication and no chance. The team ends up again timing out as they just about everything getting it wrong, even putting the puzzle pieces in the wrong pole. Obviously, both are feeling frustrated when they finally finish and then afterwards.
TIME BUSTERS: In a break of tradition where all-night challenges in between these two-day'ers were common, after Days 1 and 2 the finalists all get to rest up, but instead of the Oasis they're sent to the Shelter. Also, they're given the addition of a time buster where those who win get to add 5 minutes to the time for a guy and girl of their choosing. On Night 1, the teams are paired up again, this time with having to crack coconuts and extracting water from inside those nuts; the team who accumulates the most water in the time allotted wins. Nicole and Cory pair up and take the win, and he gives the 5 minutes to leader CT, while she gives the added time to Ashley.
Then on Night 2, everyone is given baskets of beads, where they are tasked with putting the beads on the strand for as long as takes from when TJ leaves until he returns; the team with the longest string will get to tack on five minutes to the players of their choosing. When the teams reach four hours of doing something my mom and aunt love doing in putting together jewelry, the players grow restless and are getting hungry. They all decide to stop working and take a 10-minute break to reenergize, but it's here where we have that moment of mom catching the kids trying to get something from the cookie jar as TJ returns to everyone just relaxing and not working. Obviously, he calls time and measures the beads, where Ashley & CT win and they add 5 mins to Nicole & Nelson's times.
ONE LAST CHANCE: On the final day of competition, Ashley & Cory, Camila & Nelson and CT & Nicole tackle the last series of checkpoints and a 10-mile kayak trip...endurance and strength will be needed. For checkpoint #1, the ladder takes precedent in the teams grabbing long bamboo sticks with ropes hanging from it with hooks attached which would then enable them to pick up buckets while on the beach. Given their strength, CT & Nicole finish first, followed by Team Ex-Plosion. Then comes the kayaking portion where teamwork will be most needed: here, Camila & Nelson take advantage of CT & Nicole's weak start on this stage to take an early lead, but then take a wrong turn that then sees them lose the lead. CT & Nicole then encounter rough waters of their own when their kayak flips over, but they get back up quick enough to not lose any ground and get to the barge first. Camila & Nelson do recover to take 2nd, followed by Cory & Ashley.
And just as it was on the Free Agents final when everyone was paired up for the first day and then followed up by that stage, the last portion of this Invasion final sees everyone competing on their own the rest of the way. For this last act, the players will begin on a speedboat and will then have another boat come right near them with a hanging bar on the other side, and must jump from a platform to that bar. They'll then ride on the other boat and hang on as long as they want, and drop when they get to a buoy. When they drop in the water, they'l have to swim as fast as they can to the finish; and if they drop early then the swim will be longer. The time here will combined with the other challenges to determine, Tour de France style, who wins, places and shows. Everyone does their job and finishes the deal, meaning all the players will cash in, as well as the obligatory flashback snippets too.
FINAL RESULTS: As the sun sets on both day 3 of the final and this season, the times are all gathered up in anticipation of the big moment. And again, to refresh everyone on this: 3rd place receives $5,000, 2nd place gets $15,000, and the winners cash $100,000. Plus, the amount banked during the season will be added to their winnings too; Camila & CT already had $12,500 each heading into the final, while the underdogs would each get $21,250 if they crossed the finish line. In third, Cory and Nicole; in second are Nelson and Camila, and winning are CT and Ashley M. And that leads us to...

 #DCChallenge STRATEGY ROOM
GAME OVER, SEASON OVER

At the end of Season 29 of this fifth major pro sport - and just as it was with the takeaway from the finale of Stranded with a Million Dollars, we have a final result to this whole season that should satisfy everyone, even if the last act might not have lived up to everyone's expectations for it being the show's first-ever three-day final. But considering how last summer's final result played out there in South America, we leave Asia with everyone having big paydays and a cut of the cash, which is how it should be given everyone got here after taking long roads from humble beginnings to get to being in the final of The Challenge. In ascending order, let's begin with the bronze medalists...

3rd - CORY/$26,250: To say that Cory has had a good start to his Challenge career based upon having made it to two finals in his first three seasons would be misleading when you looked at what happened on Invasion, but the result is very much expected for someone who a lot have pegged to be the future of this show. This is exactly the same path that another Challenger with Michigan ties, Zach, also had in making it to two in his first three, and both have followed the same parallels: great physique but also mixed results and reputation. When Cory is at his best - as was the case on Bloodlines, he is a top-10 competitor. But as we saw during this season and in this final, his flaws were exposed as a competitor on the big stage and not being a good teammate to those he was partnered up with, in addition to having to struggle with his ACL. But I still feel there's a strong future ahead, and it does take time for him to learn this stuff and eventually take over this show.

3rd - NICOLE/$26,250: The moment we saw her on Real World Skeletons, we knew that Nicole was ready to take on the task of being on The Challenge, and it's not surprising that she was able to make it to the final in her first try. She has had a very good first season at this: finals berth, 3rd place despite this more tightly-packed final, but most of all being the one who was able to turn this generation's best female challenger a 180 and landing a relationship with Laurel. Yes, there were those struggles along the way in this last act, but I do join the many in saying Nicole performed better than expected in her first final in allowing her strength to take more precedent. She does have a great future ahead if she does decide to give this a second go, plus this year has already been good to her with having also celebrated graduating from the FDNY Academy. So, even if she retires after this one season, her future is already set in stone in being part of that challenging profession.

2nd - NELSON/$36,250: When Andrew and I talked after the finale, I told him that the AYTO Season 3 cast have become some casting gold that's seen one of its own take his talents to Real World, a few to The Challenge, and Devin in the running on AYTO Second Chances in Australia. So, it might come as a big shock to see Nelson not only finish second but come within 2:20 of taking down CT. Sure, a lot had some hate for him for how he acted in Hawaii and then in these two Challenges, but him being able to actually perform better than we expected of him and being the one who not only pushed CT to the win but almost take him down, Nelly does earn more respect and has won over those who doubted about having that third leg of the Trifecta join this show. Yes, there were there hiccups and mistakes along the way which was expected of him, but though he fell short Nelson can be proud of carrying that same underdog spirit that guided his cast to that surprise two years ago.

2nd - CAMILA/$27,500: Despite what we saw in the final, for Camila she has nothing to be ashamed about in having proved that she has more to offer than just being a staple of the house entertainment as she has for seven years now. Her being able to take down Laurel is no doubt the most satisfying moment she's had on The Challenge, if not since she & Bananas won Exes - the hardest final that's happened on this show. Her winning helped to make the women's final much more unpredictable than it would be if Laurel won and might've made the past three days a formality for her. Obviously, we saw her get it with Cory in this final after all that happened to them in the Oasis and yes, it appeared that she chose the wrong partners for the last two days of this final which may have cost her in the end in both instances when she was seen as the favorite by way of her past two finals appearances. Still, second place is not bad.

1st - CT/$112,500: Now, the champion guy. CT has already been a Top-10 competitor by virtue of having done this a long time, for him being this beast whenever he was on the field, and having a long story arc that's paralleled with this show. During this season, he was in the same boat as Darrell in being those whose only screen time was during Challenges and confessionals, and letting everyone else have all the drama, thanks to the responsibilities of being older and being a dad. When he made it into the final, we pretty much knew he was the clear favorite in, as noted by fellow Challenge fan Allan Aguirre on his Medium site, experience, endurance, mental toughness and strength (of course), among other things. Him winning this final, along with beating Darrell in the last elimination, now makes the argument of him being a Top-5 competitor that much more clearer thanks to his second Challenge win. He partnered with Wes to get #1, he gets this done by himself this time around, and adds much more to his legend status on this show: someone everyone can root for on this show.

1st - ASHLEY/$121,250: Finally, the underdog surprise. If you're one of those who had Ashley winning this season: you're in that same small number who might've had Leicester City win soccer's Premier League last year...you are one lucky cat who should frame that bet receipt you made in the race & sports book at season's start. For here, she was made for The Challenge: entertainment-wise and in competition in being a very good competitor. Going into the Bloodbath, this was gonna be a tough road, but after Laurel's loss it gave her and Nicole a better shot at winning. And considering how close the women's race would turn out in the end, it was anyone's for the taking. But take into account what happened on the time buster: both underdog girls won and having the 5-minute time gap being thrust on one another. Ashley won the second buster, and she benefited from partnering with CT on Day 2 and her competitors' shortcomings to become the biggest surprise Challenge champ perhaps since Sarah Greyson on The Gauntlet. She's had a lot happen on this season, but not many expected her to win... that's exactly what's happened. Ashley's the deserving champ.

 ENDGAME
FINAL STANDINGS AND PARTING SHOTS

On our AYTO Season 5 Finale Wrap, we devoted an entire Endgame to all the reaction from Team 22 after they went into the books as the first cast to lose.  Now once again, Endgame will devote this section to the final standings and Parting Shots, where available, of the group and their exit remarks - from the show and from social media, which we will update after this Wrap is posted. This is also paying homage to the now-departed ESPN show The Sports Reporters, which ended each episode with the panelists offering their final thoughts on something they're passionate about.

CT/Winner: "This one means a lot, that's all I can say. More than just the money for sure. I come walking in this house with the 9 out of 10 dad bod. I was more concerned about changing diapers and making bottles than training for a Challenge, you know? I'm gonna go home and see if the little man's walking around yet. I know he's getting close. God, I can't wait to see that kid. I can't wait to go home. (This trophy) is his new favorite. It's gonna be his new favorite you whether he likes it or not."
NELSON/2nd Place: "I didn't come here for second place, man. I want this so bad. People don't realize how bad I want it. I mean, I just feel like I let myself down again."
CORY/3rd Place: "It was tough, but I didn't give up. I've kind of known that I was in third place. I didn't make up enough time today. Am I a little disappointed on how the finals went? Yeah. I wished I would have switched up my partners and had them on my strengths. I basically had all the girls on their weaknesses, but what can you do?"
DARRELL/4th
SHANE/5th @shannanity: "It was a hell of experience!! Xoxox Love you Hate You Xoxox #TheChallengeInvasion"
HUNTER/6th @HBarfield13: "Enjoyed my experience in Thailand and I'm truly sorry to everyone who pulled for me to win, I should have done better. So thankful for the opportunity and for the fans who have kept up with me. This one is for you all!"
BANANAS/7th
DARIO/8th
ZACH/9th
TONY/10th @T_Raines33: "Thank you everyone for the positivity and kind words this season. It means a lot especially y'all seeing where I started on this journey. I proved a lot to myself and hopefully my next accomplishment can be winning one of these things! 'You can't change the past but you can always better your future'."
ANTHONY/11th @A_Bartolotte: "Came so close. Wasn't the outcome I wanted, but I'm still very grateful for the experience. I have unfinished business here.. I'll be back."
THEO/12th
BRUNO/13th

ASHLEY M./Champion @MTVAshleyBrooke: "Pinch me because... ahh! I'm gonna try to invest. I'm gonna help my family. I'm gonna spoil my mom who's spoiled me my whole life. I just can't wait to call my mom. Huge thanks to all my fans, family, and friends. Couldn't have done this without all your love and support! Lots more to come! Love you mom! #teamashley #thechallengeinvasion #realitytv #mtv #thechallengewinner #mtvashleybrooke"
CAMILA/2nd Place @CamilaMTV: "It's not first place. Not very happy about it. I feel like I didn't pick the right partners on the right days, and that really screwed me up. I had people that I was working with that had already given up and that was already settling for third place, and they dragged me down with them. I'm not gonna pretend I'm, like, super excited about 15 grand when there was 100 for grabs. All the loses are what make me stronger, especially against such great competition. Can't wait to do it again. ✌️✌️ #TheChallengeInvasion"
NICOLE/3rd Place @n_zanattaMTV: "I did give it my all, and that's how it went down. There was a lot of ups and downs. I took it for what it is. It was a positive experience. Thank you everyone involved & the fans for the support. ❤️Hard loss 😡def learned some things. Won't happen next time around! #TheChallenge"
LAUREL/4th
AMANDA/5th
JENNA/6th @JennaCompono: "Lots of ups and downs this season but I made it through! 🙂 Thanks for all the support, hope to be back soon! #TheChallengeInvasion"

ASHLEY THE MODEL
We at DCBLOG always want to prepare ourselves for anything and everything should something out of the ordinary happen in this always wild world of the MTV Trifecta. This includes scouring the web, social media hubs and YouTube, and do plenty of research to look for anything meaningful on everyone in the Team MTV family. This forms the root of the kind of interesting stories, antidotes or vignettes that makes them that much more relatable. This makes our coverage and this site one-of-a-kind in this ecosystem and for which we regard this site as the place those in the know go to.
Well, in something that we can take the words of longtime HBO boxing analyst Larry Merchant of the Trifecta being "the theater of the unexpected," we have been proven again that anything can happen. And with the surprise result on the girls' side, we thought of one thing when we thought of having to write on Ashley.

AshleyBrookeMitchell.com
We have discussed before about the world of modeling sometimes making its way into the Trifecta, including Ashley's Ex-Plosion castmate Ari Fitz, who has followed her heart post-Real World into the world of fashion and has become a renowned YouTube figure. For Ashley, she has done a lot of modeling work before and after her three-and-a-half episode stint on the season the O.G. of reality TV got an extreme makeover in San Francisco. I still remember posting a pic of her on my Instagram bidding deuces to everyone with her jaw dropping from before that Real World season began and her commenting, "Thanks boo boo!" from when she was in Paris doing modeling work.
Take note of the resume Ashley wrote on her Model Mayhem profile and on her modeling site: commercials for Adidas, Nike, Sketchers and Cisco; music videos for E40 and other musicians, appearing in ads for BEBE, Banana Republic, beers, calendars and magazines; and having walked down the runway at over 30 events. This doesn't take into account the hundreds of promotional events, trade shows, conventions and the like that makes you appreciate how hard working models are in this highly visible and highly competitive world of fashion. And now with a move to Las Vegas comes plenty more opportunities, including those weekends at the Fashion Show Mall on the Strip.
We happened to stumble upon her YouTube channel and have embedded her videos below, including being on the runway and a few commercials she's done along the way. In fact, if you've seen one of my IG photos, one of those was a screen cap of her and the founder of a company called Tap That, where she also was able to dance on him.

 FOLLOW-UP...
Before we leave you, an additional note from a friend of this site. The guy featured in the footnote of our In-Depth last month on Yellowcard's cameo on The Challenge Inferno - and previously during Real World Ex-Plosion, River Zain Cebellos (née Eric Cebellos), would like me to share briefly something he got to do over a week ago.
On the site Proud 2 B Me, River wrote a post on pop star (and Backstreet Boy Nick's younger brother) Aaron Carter where he wrote in defense of the pop star in reference to his ailment and eating disorder, and is willing to tell everyone about an issue that affects many young people. Check out that post here, plus our bit on Yellowcard linked above.

That will wrap it up for now here, and for our coverage of The Challenge Invasion. Tomorrow, DCBLOG will preview the new special series, The Challenge: Champs vs. Pros, as CT, Ashley, Camila and fellow champions will face off against a team of athletes, Olympians and a UFC/WWE icon to see who is the best in the fifth major pro sport. Don't miss that, and see you then.
