Throughout the past several seasons of The Challenge as well as many other MTV shows, an aspect of these shows that, if it was an actual member of the cast, would certainly qualify for MVP honors has been the music department. Whether it's the action of the fifth major pro sport, the drama that takes place in Siesta Key or any other reality show that airs on the channel or produced by it, those who choose the songs that accompany scenes in these shows have certainly nailed those choices.

When MTV's first two entries to the slate of new original programming that came with the launch of Paramount+ this spring in Real World Homecoming and The Challenge All-Stars, the geniuses that make the experience of watching MTV Reality on the musical side of things continued into the streaming sphere. And when the ladder debuted to enormous buzz as arguably the most anticipated of the new shows to debut on ViacomCBS' entry into the streaming wars, one musical choice stood out the most, especially now.

It was after the April 1st premiere of All-Stars was made available on Paramount+ that news trickled in unexpectedly from the world of hip-hop involving a heavyweight of the late '90s and 2000's, DMX. The debut of the spinoff to the regular MTV competition show featured the track "Ruff Ryders Anthem" when the competitors came home from their first challenge of going underwater that, along with many other songs, instantly brought back memories to viewers streaming the first episode.

The artist who actual name is Earl Simmons had quite a career in the hip-hop world when he dropped his acclaimed and successful debut album It's Dark and Hell Is Hot in 1998, followed a year later by his mainstream breakthrough ...And Then There Was X and its accompanying single "Party Up (Up in Here)." DMX would continue to craft hits throughout the rest of his career including being the first to notch five straight #1 debuts on the Billboard 200 album charts, and he would also soak his feet in the movie world starring in Romeo Must Die with Aaliyah and Exit Wounds as well as a BET reality show.

But as it turned out, the choice of that DMX flashback on All-Stars came at what would become a peculiar time in his life: he had frequent troubles in the law for numerous offenses including a recent charge of tax evasion two years ago. He had similar problems with his health including an addiction to cocaine, going to drug rehab three times and a bout with asthma in 2016. But five years later, Simmons was hospitalized for a possible drug overdose... and after many reports being refuted by family and his manager, the rapper would eventually be pronounced dead on Friday at the young age of 50.

While there have been many tributes being paid to DMX in the days and hours since his passing, The Challenge community has been affected too, and not just because of "Ruff Ryders Anthem" being featured in the All-Stars premiere last week. A two-time competitor on both the regular show and the Champs vs. Stars spinoff, as well as Season 18 of Big Brother before that and Season 2 of Ex On The Beach afterwards, Jozea Flores, shared his memory of meeting DMX while at the airport one day.

He captioned below, "I would never forget that day that i was standing in LaGuardia air port and i was waiting on my Uber. And all of a sudden this deep raspy voice comes behind me and says (eyo those kicks are nice my dawg) and i turned around and it was @dmx we started to laugh a bit and talk about how our day was going i was so happy to see this man because as a Lil kid growing up Dmx was someone i listened to! In the music world He didn’t give a F**** if you were gay bi transgender he loved and supported everyone! He was and is a true hip hop legend pioneer! And icon!!! Rest in great peace my friend #dmx."
