DC WRAP: Are You The One? Season 6 - The Finale and The Comeback

Fitting for a year that has seen practically everything take place in the shows you love as well as a record year for this very site that covers this world best, you can't think of a better week than the one we had in the first full week of December in what we call the MTV Trifecta. There was a bar fight over draft beer and drama brewing for the newbies of Floribama Shore, T.O. and Ashley M. leaving Champs vs. Stars for reasons other than actually being eliminated, and the countdown to The Challenge Vendettas kicking off with new blood from outside the Trifecta ecosystem invading the big show.
But who knew all three of these moments would be upstaged for the week's biggest story by what might be the biggest surprise we've had this year -- perhaps ever: the Cinderella story of the eleventh hour comeback of the cast of Are You The One? Season 6. Considering how they began this season with the largest odds ever placed against an AYTO cast to run the table, of getting from where they began to where they did, and the obstacles that plagued their Caribbean predecessors, if you bet money in Vegas on the cast going 11 for 11 to begin with before this, then frame that receipt in your rec room because of the monumental feat they pulled off down in New Orleans to win $1 Million.
As we did for The Challenge XXX a few weeks ago and as tradition dictates for the final act of the major series we cover, this entire post is dedicated to the AYTO season 6 finale as ahead we'll recap the big moments of the season's homestretch of the final three episodes, including the dramatic finale. Plus, we'll break down the game & final outcome from inside the Strategy Room and unload a ton of tidbits about why this may replace Gauntlet Queen Sarah Greyson's Challenge title run as the ultimate Underdog Story in the history of the MTV Trifecta. All of that, plus reaction from the cast, is coming up on the WRAP before part 1 of the reunion airs in a few hours.

 THINGS TO KNOW
THE HOMESTRETCH

MARDI GRAS MADNESS: We begin with Episode 10 on Thanksgiving Eve, as the house's positive momentum in their previous Matchup leads them to the annual down & dirty dance party, which brings them to a spot by the river down a ways from the mansion. And with New Orleans as the backdrop, the theme is, of course, the big bash that takes over the Crescent City come February known as Mardi Gras. And it's no surprise that dancing, makeouts and lots of slo-mo are the order of the night.
And like what we've had in past outdoor party nights, drama ensues while everyone is humping and getting drunk, and that includes Alexis & Keith making out yet again in adding more to their tumultuous relationship. And for Jada & Dimitri, they also enjoy some dry humping but it's when he says to her he's not interested in her that made them being sent onto the last date and into a throwaway last Truth Booth a couple weeks later that confounded matters.
But for Anthony, he decides to make his move on the best friend of his crush Geles in kissing Zoe, and then the former Texans cheerleader gets a little too close to Clinton. With that, Geles causes strains on both his relationship with Uche and her fling with Michael, and also deciding to go in on Anthony by tossing a drink at him after that kiss. You pretty much knew that this would not be a night without having some fireworks go off.

MAUDREY: Another one who's had his moments this season is Michael: at that Mardi Gras party and in front of Audrey, Michael makes his move on Geles, while his Week 8 date Audrey is watching from a distance. For a moment, it looked as if the romance known as "Maudrey" would find itself being put laid to rest in the river, but then they go into a bathroom and take care of their business with us being left wonder if he's an F___boy or being sincere. And on top of all that, they also won the getaway date, which brings them again to the French Quarter to make NOLA's favorite food, a beignet. Being the actual couple of the two who went -- Joe & Alivia the other and who have fun with powder having their lunch, it's no surprise that Michael & Audrey get chosen for the Truth Booth and emerge a no match and leading him to go for Geles. But as it turns out, Michael isn't done… more on that soon.

STRATEGY & A MATCH: After their eighth Matchup netting three beams and losing two from Week 7, the house no doubt feels the pressure and with no idea of who those three are. For Week 9, the house channels what Season 3 did and turns to a guy to help them figure out how to get from there to 11 lights in two weeks. Keith tells the group about his experience in math and statistics in college and comes up with plans to build their last two weeks around four pairs: Dimitri & Diandra, Tyler & Nicole, Kareem & Nurys and Michael & Keyana. The ladder in that fourth pair begins to rediscover the connection she & Mike felt all along, but given what befell last season's bunch not everyone gets on board with their switch from playing with their hearts to going with those best laid plans… more later.
While everyone else explores new connections being made with a chance to salvage what they feel is a lost game, one who have been exploring them are Tyler & Nicole. And in one of those challenges where pure chance and questions often puts odd couples into the Truth Booth, they benefit from the luck of not having a ball drop in the week 9 GC to see him win a date and then pick Nicole for a trip to a haunted house just a month late from Halloween. The one with the long hairdo finally makes his move on the girl who worked on web videos with AYTO original Brittany with, of all things, a strawberry covered in chocolate and then sharing a kiss. And when they're sent into the Truth Booth and the words "Perfect Match comes up," the house finally has reason to celebrate and to be given at least a puncher's chance at $1 million. They didn't know that this was the start of something magical.

KEEFA & LEXI (& BRIDGET): To the finale, and back to Alexis & Keith: she tells him that she's moving from WV to Jersey to be with him more when this is all done (or at least she thought, depending upon what might occur on the reunion) and that they both have feelings for each other, though Joe feels they're only together because the rest of the girls don't want to cuddle with the guy who we saw run around in a monkey suit. It's clear that they are not compatible whether the matchmakers have it right or not, and it's what goes down after Dimitri & Jada's no match that sees them go into DEF CON.
When Keith decides to take for a talk to Zoe & Michael, the skeptics Alexis has had towards him begins to finally take shape when he and Zoe are on the couch. Then, after she got to kiss Joe on their date, Alexis is the one who finds herself making the headlines, and pulls off that same dirty move she had on a previous date just a few weeks ago. She says, "Michael is a f___ing player and Keith is in love with me. I'm terrible in relationships and that's why I'm here."
By heading outside and spotting Michael on the patio, they proceed with chugging a beer can in private, then pouring the good stuff on her body and him licking and sucking it off... all with a mini-cam watching this all play out knowing things like this would get a reaction from their parents and loved ones gathering around watching this. And as Keith tries to look for those cans, the rumors of this fling start to spread around the house, and Michael lying to him about what the kiss only we fans got to see.
And when Geles receives word about it, it's as if the loyalty ratings the new best friend of both Neil Patrick Harris and Fergie might've plunged into a deep freeze. But her reaction is relatively cool by comparison to that of Keith, who after he gets word about decides to take it upon himself to take away Alexis' most-prized possession since she was in her baby crib. Her stuffed animal Bridget is taken away to a final resting place in a NOLA firepit as the girls freak out and go into waterworks about him possibly crossing the line, then Alexis gets revenge burning one of Keith's shoes. After all that, to the final part...

ONE MORE SHOT: Before the final chapter of Keefa & Lexi went down, in their 9th Matchup the house would only manage to crawl their way back to five beams, and his plan backfired in only gaining two beams from Week 8, only getting as far as their season high and not playing the strategy far beyond the 50% hurdle. The house returns from the patio distraught and in an absolute abyss despite being well ahead of the pace Season 3 was after their 9th faceoff with the beams and behind what is usually where an AYTO house would be going into their final week.
Being one of the voices of reason for the group, Ethan states the mood of the house is of them just wanting to play this one out with absolutely no shot at wanting to make a take a shot and would just be willing to go home without the cash. And when a challenge they hoped would be one that would favor any power couples didn't get them anywhere -- a trivia contest that gave Dimitri & Jada that aforementioned spot along with Malcolm & Keyana and her crying after the Drummer wins his spot on the date, the house faces one last test after that 9th Truth Booth no match.
As Keith's first chance to try his hand at doing what Devin, Season 2's Anthony and Season 4's Tori did successfully but didn't pay off for him in Week 9, he gets a second chance at taking the game by the throat at plotting their strategy. Here, he opts to go with an approach he calls the "double-edge sword" and pair up those not only on strategy but of how they connected in the house. Like NFL teams going through Thursday's all-out practices before Sunday, the singles go through scenarios to see what may or may not work, and even rehearse their own matchup.
In the end, they come up with two different formations to use for their final matchup. The house is split down the middle on Keith's plan where Shad feels this is all based on just mere assumptions, while Geles believes the one where she sits with Clinton instead of Ethan is the one that will bring them to the magic number. And for the rapper, it's only after that practice that he gets to talk to Zoe for the first time, and after getting to meet such a sweet & handsome man like him that she thinks something might click for them.

ELEVENTH HEAVEN: For their tenth and last matchup, it's the girls who pick -- and the last time an AYTO cast picked this late and the ladies were tasked it would come back to haunt them (more on that in a moment). But when she gets the uneasy task of having to pick first, Geles is in the same spot Shannon was last season: having to pick between two guys and one being possibly her match. But she opts to stay with Clinton for a fifth straight matchup and not mix things up by picking Ethan... this sees Keith freak out for a moment thinking her choice may cost them the cash.
After being paired aplenty early on, Audrey returns to Shad after she begins to understand that there is more to him than we saw most of this season (and as you'll find out here soon, much more than a jaw line). Then after Zoe picks Ethan, Alexis explains what happened with her & Keith and him tossing aside Bridget, and leaving Tyler & Nicole in stunned face mode before she makes the strategic choice of picking Anthony, though only one time they've fixed eyes on one another and her discussing how loyal he is. Then Terrence puts Michael to task for being the player in the house after he gets picked by Keyana leaving the girls to nod their head in approval and him having to say sorry before the lights dim.
Without much fanfare and discussion, the five other pairs lock themselves in: Nurys & Dimitri, Alivia & Malcolm, Diandra & Kareem, Uche & Joe, and lastly Jada & Keith.  After being chosen by her, Keith gets choked up and takes a moment to compose himself after Terrence calls him the "mastermind of the house," before the ultimate show-stopper: the lights dimming with one light lit. Minutes later, the wish into the pond for them to go 11 for 11 is made once the tenth beam goes up... history is made, champagne flows and history of the historic kind is made. Eleventh heaven in the eleventh hour.

 AYTO STRATEGY ROOM
THE COMEBACK BY THE BAYOU

Back in March, it was the loss heard around the world when the Season 5 cast (including the love triangle of Kam, Eddie & Alicia who we'll see next month) fell short down in the Caribbean after riding so much momentum into their last matchup -- the first AYTO cast to lose the money. Here over the holidays, it's a total 180: this is The Comeback by the Bayou, and a scene more familiar with what we have seen during our ride with this show. And again, we are proven why MTV reality TV is so good to watch and also having the knack for being, as once coined by HBO boxing analyst Larry Merchant, "the Theater of the Unexpected" in seeing moments like this so often.
So, what do we make of all of this? As the saying goes, we can hope for the best and expect the worst, and always be prepared for either when either the house wins or loses the money, or when someone you don't expect wins The Challenge - ask Alexis' fellow West Virginian Ashley about that and being an Underdog like this cast was going into last Wednesday. They have surely made a strong case for that award that the Season 3 cast earned for their comeback twenty-five months ago, and others too. And as Dimitri coined before this all went down, "It's Not Over Until the Fat Lady Sings."

You might say that, as we wrote back in Nov. 2015, that there might be an NBA-like conspiracy theory about all this, about how a group left for dead in week 9 but somehow finding a way to win by notching a record light spell at the 10th and last matchup ceremony, just as Devin and his Season 3 cast did to snatch the cash at the final buzzer. And perhaps to add to all of this, if you got to see the sight of a garbage can on the left in the photo that was included in our season preview -- one that we actually got from that juicy spot known as Vevmo, that photo indeed came from that tenth matchup.
But then again, as was pointed out in the AYTO 3 Finale WRAP and by the man who presided over this show's first five seasons Ryan Devlin, this is a game show that involves money, and shows like this are heavily regulated by the big wigs and can't be manipulated in any which way. With that being taken care of again, let's roll with a bevy of facts and figures to share with you from the Strategy Room...

The cast is, of course, always kept in the dark of who they're matched up with to being with, and when they sit at that patio watching Terrence J. turn from a jack of all trades to becoming a symphony conductor with the light beams being like the orchestra... and then the next moment be either on the cast's toes or praising them at each Matchup Ceremony. He did plenty of the former on that season with at least once curse word being uttered to the cast just as Ryan Devlin did to Joe's ex and her Season 5 cast, but in the end the Prince of Norway enjoys what Taylor didn't have: confetti and cash.
During this season, the cast didn't know that at times during the season, all but one of the eleven perfect matches were sitting next to each other in the first nine matchups, and nine of them from tries 6-9. The only one who didn't during that time were Anthony & Alexis, and it was only in that last one that they sat for the first time, just as it was for those like JJ & Ashleigh on Season 1, Hunter & Hannah on Season 3 and so on in executing the strategy they had to get this one done when facing joining Season 5 or the first four seasons.
In the season's first half, Michael & Keyana, Audrey & Shad and Tyler & Nicole were paired up multiple times, and in the the second half matchup #10 they were joined by Clinton & Geles. Kareem & Diandra paired early & then late as did Malcolm & Alivia, and Keith & Jada. Only Dimiri & Nurys, Ethan & Zoe and Joe & Uche sat just once before the last matchup.

The Truth Booth was, of course, the bitch of this season's cast until late in the affair. Obviously, they had the worst season as far as number of couples being confirmed a match inside that room: just one in the laser chamber in Nicole and Tyler when they were a match in the 9th Truth Booth. Season 1 had three Truth Booth matches, Season 2 had five of them including three in the last four weeks, Seasons 3 and 5 had two, and Season 4 had four.
From what we saw here, there were some strong couples who came in that room and came out of it not being any of those beams and it would've been the thing that brought the house down. Everyone was obsessed with Clinton & Uche and Keith & Alexis, but they also took the task of separating not only those couples but also settled the Malcolm/Nurys/Diandra triangle and who Michael's match was in the end. And in only one instance did the cast miss the chance to put someone in the Honeymoon Suites early: Clinton & Geles were the other daters in Week 6 when Kelexis was in everyone's mind, and they were the perfect match that would've made things more easier instead of hard for most of the game. And Keith, Nicole and Dimitri are the only ones this season that went in multiple times.
   Below, our Matchup Chart...
TB #1: Ethan/Keyana = NO MATCH; Audrey/Malcolm (no match), Jada/Shad (no match)
TB #2: Anthony/Geles = NO MATCH; Shad/Uche (no match), Joe/Alexis (no match)
TB #3: Malcolm/Nurys = NO MATCH; Michael/Audrey (no match), Geles/Ethan (no match)

TB #9: Tyler/Nicole = PERFECT MATCH; Anthony/Zoe (no match), Keith/Diandra (no match)
TB #10: Dimitri/Jada = NO MATCH; Malcolm/Keyana (no match)

Which couples did we see get paired up the most often on Season 6? It was no surprise that Tyler & Nicole topped all others in sitting five times before their Truth Booth match, making it seven times that they watched the light show together (1, 3, 6-10). They're followed by a three-way tie with five by Michael & Keyana (1-2, 8-10), Shad & Audrey (1, 4-6, 10) and Clinton & Geles (6-10) -- all of those are among the perfect matches. For non-matches, that is led by Joe/Zoe with five, Dimitri & Diandra with four as were Kareem & Alivia and three for Keith & Alexis.

If you're those who didn't keep with what happened at those beam sessions all season long, below are the match charts for the first nine Matchup Ceremonies... the 10th and final one follows.

(#1) - started at 1 beam, denoting Tyler & Nicole's Truth Booth match

Now, the Difference Maker... Last season, it was Shannon picking Tyler over her eventual match Joey in Week 9 which bit the house at the end and has to live with the enigma of having eventually cost her team $800K and their dubious spot in AYTO history being the only ones to lose. This time, there are two people who, in the end, made the biggest choice which, in the end, has seen them make history for the right reasons.
First is Keyana, where in the first of the two weeks where they got one beam in their second Matchup, she chose Michael. And then three ceremonies later, Shad chose Audrey when no-match couples were the rage. Had Keyana or Shad screwed things up in those 1-beam weeks, the cast would've lost $500,000 for getting a black out in the same manner that Season 5 did earlier this year, and then another half from that pot at the halfway point at almost the same point Season 2 had three years ago. This would've left the house with having to play for just a meager $250,000 the rest of the way and had they gotten 11 for 11 the win would have not been as satisfying money-wise had they blacked out on those weeks. This was, in essence, the scenario that would've played out for Season 2 had the money penalty been in place all along had they not gotten a light.
Them being able to make the wise choice during the chaos that the house endured early and then midway through in avoiding the blackout is the difference between this group getting the equivalent of 3rd place money on The Challenge and this being a seven-figures game this fall instead of six. No wonder why the holidays are gonna be so merry for Season 6.

And here's some additional historical background...

In that tenth and last matchup, the group began with one light to signify Tyler & Nicole. In effect, this was them playing the original perfect ten format as we saw in AYTO's first four seasons, and them needing ten lights to win $1 million. In being able to do this impossible and incredible feat, they set two series records: most lights lit in any one matchup ceremony and biggest deficit overcome to win, which overtakes by two the eight that Season 3 had in their final matchup two years ago.

In their ninth matchup, Season 6 had five beams... them being able to gain +6 in the tenth week from their ninth week is the second biggest week-to-week matchup gain in series history, behind again the Season 3 cast when they gained +8 in that tenth week. By comparison, Season 4 needed four to win which they did, and Seasons 2 and 5 needed two to win which only the former got to do.

Because of Keyana picking Michael in MC #2 and Shad picking Alivia in MC #5, the house narrowly avoided a blackout in notching one light. Season 6 becomes just the second cast in AYTO history to not record a blackout in any Matchup all season, joining the legendary Season 1 cast who also didn't experience what their successors did in having the distraught of them returning with no lights recorded. And in doing so, Team NOLA becomes the first cast to win the full $1 million purse since Season 2 - a group that recorded two blackouts and inspired the money penalty rule.

Yes, the group stayed out of trouble and stayed afloat watching the lights, but in the Truth Booth they notched the fewest number of Truth Booth matches by a season in AYTO history: just one in Tyler & Nicole. This pales with the two recorded by Season's 3 and 5, three recorded by both Season's 1 and 4, and the season record of five by Season 2.

Collectively, this group is the largest winning cast in MTV reality history at 22 people. They'll split a 30-year annuity totaling $1 million, or $45.454.55 to the cast if they opt for annual payments until their 50's or the lump sum of $22,000 after taxes. They are the biggest winners of the 2017 MTV year, followed by Cody, Makani, Alex & Gina on Stranded with a Million Dollars ($500,000), Jordan and Camila with $450,000 each on The Challenge XXX, Devin & Rashida on Second Chances ($170,000), and Challenge Invasion champs Ashley M. ($121,000) and CT ($112,500).

In our first WRAP for AYTO 6 and with help from AYTO Math, we mentioned the one gigantic number that trumped 11 for 11: 39,916,800 - the number of possible combinations of the 11 matches when both this and last season began when they added the 11th couple and two additional castmates into the AYTO house. In case you're wondering, that number is the answer to when you multiply 11 by every descending number until you get to 1. The odds of 1 in 39.9 million were the largest odds ever placed on the cast getting to the magic number needed to win, which made their journey to this moment that much more tough but even more rewarding.

And if you're wondering, here's a breakdown of the comebacks by Season's 3 and 6 for a statistical breakdown and comparison.

SEASON 3
• 9th Week: TWO BEAMS
• 10th Week: EIGHT (then-record)
• Truth Booth Matches: Two (then-fewest)
• Blackouts: One (lost $250,000)
• Odds of Cast Winning: 1 in 3,628,800
• Mastermind: Devin
• Winning Purse: $750,000

SEASON 6
• 9th Week: TWO BEAMS
• 10th Week: ELEVEN (record)
• Truth Booth Matches: One (fewest ever)
• Blackouts: Zero (first since S1)
• Odds of Cast Winning: 1 in 39,916,800
• Mastermind: Keith
• Winning Purse: $1 Million

By every sense of the imagination and from every measure we've just poured to you above, this is the single biggest comeback in AYTO history, and one of the biggest Cinderella stories we have seen on an MTV reality. Maybe, this might be both the biggest underdog story and biggest comeback of the past couple years. This would overtake the Patriots fight back in record fashion in the Super Bowl, LeBron and the Cavs overcome a powerhouse Warriors team to exercise a city's sports demons, a Cubs team come back from that same 3-1 deficit to also execute a champions curse, and a 5000-1 long shot win the English Premier League title, among others. Certainly, these kids are a more likable bunch of winners compared to what we just had last month.
Because of all this, Alexis, Alivia, Anthony, Audrey, Clinton, David, Diandra, Dimitri, Ethan, Geles, Jada, Joe, Kareem, Keith, Keyana, Malcolm, Michael, Nicole, Nurys, Tyler, Uche and Zoe have all made a more than valid case to be rewarded in the year-end awards we'll be handing out on this site's upcoming 2017 Reality Debrief. And in fact, they will be rewarded with at least one of them when we begin our annual review at the end of next week. But for now, we send our congrats to them and again proving anything is possible and there's no one better than rooting for an underdog. They are in Eleventh Heaven.

 ENDGAME
AYTO SEASON 6: EPILOGUE

Quite a contrast from what we have seen in the two AYTO seasons: one getting snake bitten, the other going through elation. And the aftermath of what happened on Wednesday night -- one that saw this show trend on Twitter -- has seen nothing but happy faces, something we didn't see in March or when Camila won Dirty 30. Though our guess is that no one on this cast will stay together like what happened in past seasons and we'd be surprised if there is at least of them who's still meeting each other, to conclude here now is the reaction from the cast through social media... an updated version featuring the couples will be on here later after both parts of the reunion air next week.

ALEXIS @lexoquence: "If we get a 10 we got 11 ;) $1,000,000 mother fuckers... that's right. "worst in #AYTO history" MY ASS!!"

And that will do it from here. Tonight is the first of the two-part reunion, and DCNOW will have that covered on my live hub at @DC408DxNow. We'll have the 'Pulse of that covered here on DCBLOG this weekend, along with last night's Champs vs. Stars with someone familiar making their return. We'll also have Week 3 of Floribama Shore to begin the weekend's matters on Friday night, and due of matters that took place on Monday I'll be having live & curated tweets of that on my other Twitter hub tomorrow night. And tomorrow, we'll have a bonus ExtraTime which we'll reveal after the show airs on the west coast... For now, enjoy tonight's reunion, and see you here this weekend.
