Once upon a time in the early stages of its development, reality television embraced the opportunity to feature the biggest stars in showbiz in their own series: the Osbourne family, Nick Lachey & Jessica Simpson, Paris Hilton & Nicole Richie, and so many more. Thursday night saw a final curtain call for the most famous celeb-reality series ever, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, which has followed over the past decade & a half the royal family of this genre, while also documenting the remarkable growth from adolescence to adulthood of Kendall, Kim, Khloé, Kourtney, Kylie and Rob.

Two years ago, MTV tapped back into this field to follow the biggest stars in YouTube in their own reality series... but not for the traditional linear cable network, but for the MTV YouTube channel. The first subject of No Filter was none other than powerhouse social influencer Tana Mongeau as cameras followed her always fascinating life as one of the biggest stars in all of YouTube. This includes, of course, her much publicized romance and even more publicized wedding night with Jake Paul, as well as friendships and relationships with family and friends in her inner circle.

For its second installment this spring, the focus of MTV Following turned its attention westward from the continental United States to our fiftieth state in the union. Awaiting the MTV cameras in the Hawaiian Islands was someone who lives his life as vibrantly as his personality, and one who had grown his profile even before the lens were focused on him, as Bretman Rock welcomed everyone to his own humble abode in this tropical paradise.

When MTV celebrates its 40th birthday the weekend of August 1st, it will also mark the 22nd birthday for Bretman Rock Sacayanan, who was welcomed in the company of his parents in 1998. As an Ilocano (the Philippines' third-largest ethnolinguistic group), he grew up in the small town of Sanchez-Mira in Cagauan Valley in the North Coast of the Philippines.

It may have felt like a coincidence for Bretman to be given his surname, since his late dad Edmund Laforga was a huge pro wrestling fan and wanted to bestow his new son a name based on both Bret Hart and The Rock -- hence his unusual full name. And at first Rock appeared to follow in the athletic roots of Dwayne Johnson being athletic of playing baseball, track, soccer, cross-country and volleyball once he and his family immigrated to America and moved to Hawaii.

But Bretman would see a place outside the sporting spectrum to eventually become his bahay (home in Tagalog): YouTube and Vine was where he would first become well-known as a comedian and a creator of memes before he turned his attention to making vlogs and filming beauty tips on the former - being inspired to take up that hobby by the late Talia Joy. By age 18, a video of Bret doing contouring (the art of use makeup to enhance faces and other body parts) first went viral, and he was on his way upward to ultimately boasting 8.5 million subscribers on his YouTube channel, and over 35 million social media followers overall -- one of the world's most followed influencers.

But while he was starting to get recognized with a Shorty Award nomination and being shortlisted by Time and Forbes Magazines on their lists of ones to watch among millennials, it wouldn't be until 2019 that Bretman would become more of a household name. The last summer of the old normal saw him be the cover boy for Gay Times' Pride Month issue just as he was making it public that he is gay and in a relationship, He then made his acting debut as the Playboy on YouTube original series Escape the Night, and would later take a front row seat at his first New York Fashion Week.

Bretman represents the epitome of what we love about online influencers: one who's unapologetic who always gives us the unexpected every time, and one who is always 100% himself who approaches things with an over-the-top mentality. Besides makeup tutorials, those who visit his YouTube also see him do school-style science experiments, pole dancing, taste tests often with the help of his family including his mom Mercedita, and a whole bunch of other goodies that have garnered over 500 million video views. And it's this success that saw him being named the People's Choice Beauty Influencer in 2019.

Things haven't always been picture perfect for Bretman: his outlandish ways and larger-than-life persona have garnered the usual herd of haters that come from the trolls that emerge over the Internet, but it hasn't gotten to him. He tells People, "To be honest, once you are comfortable with the person you are and you know the things that you could offer to the world, none of the hate comments can really get to you." And since he was in high school Rock has also opened up about his struggles with acne, and how that even driving over to the local drugstore to buy skincare medicine is better than forking over hundreds to get it online.

Months before the world went mad, MTV came calling to make him the subject of the second generation of No Filter as an early 2019 Christmas present... and after a whole year of filming, his MTV Following series finally was unleashed to the world this past February. He adds that unlike what he saw with Tana he wanted the show to capture what it was like to live it up in paradise rather than in the mainland: "I think what I wanted to capture the most is how different my lifestyle is from other influencers' lifestyle in LA, New York, or wherever. The culture here and the person that I am today is really fixed to the island. That's why I wanted to film it here."

MTV Following: Bretman Rock also features his sister Princess Mae, his assistant Keiffer and a childhood friend of his Larry, as they help the star of the show navigate their way through his business ventures amidst the madness of the pandemic, as well as many other things from a breakup to going horseback riding... and below, the drama and fun.
