Last week, Season 2 of The Challenge: All-Stars crowned its winner and we'll be covering that and the season's homestretch ahead here... but those of us who cover the fifth major pro sport can finally take a breather after watching and covering that show for most of the past year -- and where it began as the only "pro sport" that was airing on TV when Double Agents began 13 months ago. But at the same time, a site like ours that covers the whole wide world of the MTV beat will shift its focus to other things that will keep us busy in this offseason until then. And that includes getting to feature The Real World with DCBLOG offering a series of posts on the Homecoming reunions on Paramount+ and its most recent chapter in Atlanta that streamed three years ago on Facebook.
When we began our MTV coverage in the summer of 2013, there were only two shows that we featured in that first cycle in those two aforementioned shows, when CT won the first of his four titles on the former and when a 3-time champion made his MTV debut on the ladder. But channeling a longstanding interest I've had in MTV matters over the years, the DCBLOG beat has expanded several-fold over the past decade to allow me to feature, in one way or another, many of the channel's reality offerings. Challenge or not, this year should offer plenty to look forward to. That includes a special Teen Mom spinoff as the one who represents the MTV Reality community in that sorority, Are You The One alum and Challenge finalist Cheyenne Floyd, joins her fellow moms on a winter vacation down in paradise.
At some point this year, we will head back to paradise of a different kind as one of the new shows that we've covered from the start reopens for business when the American iteration of Ex On The Beach returns for its fifth season on our shores. That show is, like Challenge seasons of late, has become a gathering of reality TV's finest... but there is one coming attraction that might be just as anticipated in 2022 as any big summer blockbuster movie. And in this installment of "The Look Ahead," we will take a look ahead at what might be the biggest MTV crossover event ever.
Next month will see two tentpole events take place at the same time on two different continents... and both Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles and The Winter Olympics in Beijing, China will again give this sports fan reason to take a break from these hobbies to enjoy the biggest events there is. It will represent a first-ever occurrence of the biggest sporting events in America and the winter sports world being held simultaneously, which will have the same sort of massive converging that occurs almost annually when the four major team sports in North America have regular season games take place on the same day, known as a "Sports Equinox" and has taken place on a near annual basis every October.
For the countless millions who follow the Marvel Cinematic Universe, whenever a movie is released involving characters from that world it brings massive amounts of moviegoers to the box office... and even more so for two of the highest-grossing films in history in the last two installments of Avengers in both Infinity War and Endgame. Those two movies represented a rare moment when virtually every superhero in that universe came together for something that was more than just a movie -- those were true blockbuster events that brought people of all ages to the movie theaters, joining avid fanatics of the world's biggest comic books who worship this world in a daily basis.
Regardless of whether it's sports, movies, music or even a simple streaming service, there seems to be something special when you have all of your favorite things converge in one single spot. And whenever the opportunity comes to those from one field to come into another or when your favorite artists get to collaborate in the quest for a #1 single, there's nothing quite like a crossover or a collaboration.
A couple years ago, MTV parent Viacom decided to get back together with CBS in the midst of the changing viewing habits from traditional broadcast to streaming, which became prevalent during this pandemic. But well before the Viacom/CBS merger became official in ink, the first inklings of their alliance came on the show that we cover the most here: Season 31 of The Challenge, Vendettas in winter 2018, saw two houseguests from Big Brother join the show's established vets in action. The show that premiered after it ended that spring, Ex On The Beach, contributed four alumni from its original British version to that season as a bridge to its American debut, while a fifth MTV UK alum joined them in Spain -- that being a several seasons' stalwart of the UK version of MTV's biggest franchise.
Last month, the cast of Jersey Shore celebrated twelve years since the show's 2009 premiere, which changed the channel once more in giving them its most successful series and created an enduring pop culture landmark. As the Sitch, Snooki & friends have just kicked off the eleventh overall season of their show & having just marked 100 episodes of their Family Vacation reboot, it is at the heart of a franchise that stretches around the globe -- including Geordie in Britain with the aforementioned Kyle having done every Challenge since the British invasion began and who's made multiple trips to the final.
Here we've preferred to leave Jersey Shore coverage to other websites given the cast's elite status, but what brought this site into the door of the global Shore ecosystem are its Southern cousins. We've covered Floribama Shore from the very beginning in fall 2017, while we did get to cover a bit of the franchise's entry into the romantic reality genre, A Double Shot at Love with Pauly and Vinny. And it was only when Paramount+ launched last year that the U.S. audience can see how it all began for Kyle when entire seasons of Geordie Shore and Mexican counterpart Acapulco Shore were made available.
Jersey, Floribama, Geordie and Acapulco are only part of the global MTV Shore ecosystem, which also extends to Hungary in Warsaw Shore (featuring Spies, Lies & Allies rookie Gabo), Gandia Shore in Spain, and the just premiered Rio Shore in Brazil. This is one of a few MTV franchises which have gone global, with EOTB being localized in twenty different territories, and Just Tattoo of Us in the UK - which was also customized for the U.S. crowd here.
One notable Shore spinoff is Super Shore, which has aired several seasons on MTV's channels in Latin America and Spain and stars housemates from Gandia and Acapulco, being joined by a member of the Brazilian version of AYTO and one from outside the MTV system in the granddaughter of Ferruccio Lamborghini. The likes of Seaside, Florida, Italy and Vegas have hosted various seasons of a MTV Shore-related show over the course of the past dozen years, and in the instance of Super Shore, it's taken place in Mykonos, Greece (where Lindsay Lohan's Beach Club took place) and in Madrid, Spain.
It's with this in mind that, while we got to celebrate Thanksgiving and the early part of the holiday season, a handful of reality television's finest got to embark on an early winter break with an overseas trip to the nation of Spain to film an upcoming American version of Super Shore, tentatively titled "Celebrity Shore." If the upcoming third Celebrity installment of Big Brother is sure to keep reality fans talking this winter after these two Challenge seasons and the return of Survivor, then we are sure that this All-Star Shore series will have something for everyone, and that includes those who don't speak English as their primary language.
Super Shore overseas has followed the standard Shore format of the housemates just having the time of their lives, but the American version of this show will differ somewhat... whereas the castmates of the various iterations of this MTV franchise will live it up along with those from other global reality series, just as it has become on The Challenge and our own EOTB. Another twist to this is that there will reportedly, according to VEVMO, be challenges involved with one or a few lucky of these castmates coming out victorious at the end, with no housemate being voted off at all.
A lot of those in Challenge Nation have been feeling indifferent about those from other reality shows coming onto the regular show, and it might show in those liking All-Stars a bit more. But if you're a reality TV fan who loves so many different shows in and outside of the MTV system, then you are much more excited than the average viewer for these crossovers and when those from different reality shows come onto one mega-project.
When Ex On The Beach premiered four years ago here in America, it followed that same philosophy and introduced the MTV audience to some amazing people while also crafting another chapter in Cory Wharton's rise to becoming the MTV king. It's why that this site feels optimistic about this latest big MTV crossover event known as Celebrity Shore coming up this year... and below is the rumored cast.

For those who have seen her go in and out as an outsider that first summer in Seaside and again in Miami but then be driven back into this world as only the Prank King can do, then it's clear Angelina should be the standout figure in Celebrity Shore. But as it was for Cory bringing us to that first Ex On The Beach summer, she will help, in a way. to bring us to some amazing reality personalities making their American debut -- and in the case of a few, their return to MTV and the VCBS fold.
As always, we will save the chance to elaborate on the baker's dozen or so who will be the focus of our "Who Are These Newbies" posts on them then, but here's what you really need to know about a few of them: Chloe and James are longtime Geordie stalwarts, while Bethan has also been in the British tabloids for that she dated one of the UK's biggest reality stars, Demi Sims (herself an ex on Too Hot to Handle's Francesca Farago). Johnny and Joey also take on huge status in the British reality circle, which has also sparked up a romance with two of these participants -- which we would rather prefer to not mention it right now.
Celebrity Shore is one of a handful of big reality content that we are looking forward to in 2022, and after all that has taken place in the past couple years this is one of those things that should be on any reality TV fan's must-watch list this year. The beach will be waiting...
