On Sunday night, the music industry came together to honor it's own and honor the best of the best from an amazing past 12 months in music for what the Recording Academy affectionally calls, "Music's Biggest Night." The 56th Annual Grammy Awards brought together the industry's biggest names inside the Staples Center in Los Angeles for the annual celebration of the best music has to offer. We had all of the features that make it arguably the best annual awards show out there: great performances, one-of-a-kind collaborations by artists from different genres, and some of our favorite (and new favorite) artists taking home the most prestigious piece of gold in music. The night included performances by Beyoncé & Jay-Z to start things off, Pink, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Robin Thicke, John Legend and a mini-reunion of sorts by one-half of The Beatles in Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, among others.
In the end, the names who would dominate the night not only took the stage but came from out of the pack of the usual suspects of the big names to eventually capture the night's biggest honors, eventually seeing a tie for most Grammys won on this night. A coronation for the emergence of electronic dance music over the last several years would see Daft Punk take four awards: Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Best Dance/Electronic Music Album, and the two biggest awards in the multi-genre General Field of both Album and Record of the Year, for Random Access Memories and "Get Lucky", respectively. Producer Pharrell Williams had a hand in Daft Punk's success as part of "Get Lucky" while also grabbing Producer of the Year honors, also garnering four Grammys himself.
The night's most poignant moment came by way of a duo from Seattle who not only won four awards including Best New Artist and sweeping the Rap category (Performance, Song and Album for "Thrift Shop" and The Heist), but also part of a memorable Grammy moment. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, together with Madonna and Queen Latifah, would help 33 couples tie the knot to the tune of Mary Lambert and the anthem "Same Love." And New Zealander Lorde capped off her amazing run with grabbing Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for the Millennial anthem "Royals."
Other key winners included Justin Timberlake with three (Best R&B Song and Rap/Sung Collaboration & Music Video for collaborations with Jay-Z), Imagine Dragons for Best Rock Performance for "Radioactive", Bruno Mars taking Best Pop Vocal Album for Unorthodox Jukebox, country singer Kacey Musgraves with two, Rihanna and Alicia Keys taking Best R&B Albums, Zedd taking Best Dance/Electronic Song for "Clarity", and Kathy Griffin and Stephen Colbert taking Comedy awards.

Now to the wrap. While many of my followers and friends might question the quality of music today compared to what it was in the 90's and/or early 2000's (and I would likely give them a reality check if I wanted to), for me I love today's music as much as in any era of my lifetime I would choose. This year's Grammy field represents the best of the best, and any of the nominees in many big categories could've made great pleas for them to be the one. The fact I've got many of the big name artists on my iPod and in my CD collection is proof of how I am a huge music fan and someone who always looks forward to not just Grammy night, but any music event where it features multiple genres (awards shows, music festivals, radio concerts, etc.). For me, last night's Grammys didn't disappoint.
In my predictions a week ago, I wrote that perhaps Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Lorde and Imagine Dragons might have a good night, and I hit on most of the predictions of a few that I made. I got Besr New Artist right for Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, while Lorde got Song of the Year and Imagine Dragons garnered a Grammy too. And though I felt hip-hop would rule the night, in the end it would, but it would also share billing with a genre that has come into its own in the last few years.
Just many years ago, dance music was still relatively a club affair, not getting that much exposure on radio outside of mix shows. But now with electronic dance music now a key component at CHR/Pop radio stations' playlists all over the country, it has enjoyed a meteoric rise to the mainstream. Grammy Night 2014 was its coronation with one of its biggest acts and a pioneer in the field, Daft Punk, not only taking one of the two in the EDM field in Best Album (Best Recording went to "Clarity" by Zedd), but also taking Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Record of the Year for "Get Lucky" with Pharrell, and, the biggest one of all, Album of the Year for Random Access Memories. I first heard of them back in 2001 when "One More Time" was playing on the radio and during that summer's Real World casting special, so it wasn't a surprise to me that they would enjoy their breakout night in LA.
As for the performances, there were a lot of them and it would be hard to choose any one of them to single out as my favorite of the night. We had Beyoncé & Jay-Z to start off the preceedings, followed by Pink, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Robin Thicke, John Legend and a mini-reunion of sorts by one-half of The Beatles in Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr to satisfy the older part of the audience. Country was also prevalent with Hunter Hayes, Kacey Musgraves, Keith Urban and Willie Nelson taking stage, while Metallica and classical artist Lang Lang remade their iconic "One." But of all the performances, two stand out for myself.
First: ten years ago, the mashup (a reworking of two songs into one) became mainstream when my favorite band, Linkin Park, collaborated with Jay-Z on an EP album and an MTV special. Their project, Collision Course, eventually debuted at #1 - I met LP the day after that album went to the top - and garnered Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the '06 Grammys where they performed it alongside Paul McCartney. This year, we had another epic "Only at the Grammys" moment when, in one of the unique instances of artists from different genres coming together for a single performance, Imagine Dragons teamed up with Kendrick Lamar for a fresh remix of the band's huge single "Radioactive." According to a tweet by Grammy.com blogger @ArjanWrites, Kendrick, for his performance, made a request to show executive producer Ken Ehrlich to be paired with a rock band, and he would get his wish. The Las Vegas fellas mixed in "Radioactive" with lyrics from the lyricist's "M.A.A.D. City" to eventually create a mashup that brought everyone at Staples up on their feet. Though Kendrick would be shut out of Grammy gold (more in #2), he and Imagine Dragons made their mark in creating another one of those great Grammy Moments. And almost immediately, their performance became the buzz of the twitter world in garnering lots of strong & positive feedback from rock, hip-hop and overall music fans, those same fans like me who live for collaborations such as what we saw right there.
And two: though they come from Seattle and still stinging a little from what happened the previous week in the NFC Championship Game, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis capped off a stellar breakthrough year in winning four Grammys: sweeping all three of the awards in the Rap Field - Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for their first single "Thrift Shop" and Best Rap Album for The Heist - and garnering what's considered the Kiss of Death honor at any major music awards show, Best New Artist. And of course, there's the fact that they didn't get signed to a major label and had to release their work independently, which ultimately saw that winning song and album and 2nd single "Can't Hold Us" eventually go to #1 on the Billboard charts, something no independent artist has ever done. But the biggest mark they made on Grammy night was for a performance that transcended music and brought forth one of 2013's biggest stories. Last year, an act by the Supreme Court made it legal for same sex couples to get married, fueled by anger over California's Prop. 8. And upon the major news was the release of Macklemore & Ryan's collab with Seattle singer Mary Lambert called "Same Love," which addresses that very issue. NOLA jazz artist (& RW NOLA2 theme artist) Trombone Shorty and a church choir joined them for that performance, and they would all be joined by Madonna and Queen Latifah. There, the Queen would help in marrying 33 couples, straight and LGBT, who were gathered on the aisle amid the star power, including Ryan's sister as the Material Girl sang a bit of "Open Your Heart" at the end. Everyone from Neil Patrick Harris to Aubrey O'Day and even The Rock showed their outpouring of support in this landmark Grammy moment.
And when the lights came up, there's an interesting post-script that links both of these performances together. And what made me respect Macklemore & Ryan Lewis even more was afterwards when, even though they had enjoyed their great night, Macklemore acknowledged that the Best Rap Album should've went to Kendrick Lamar instead of them. He texted the following to Kendrick afterwards: "You got robbed. I wanted you to win You should have. It's weird and sucks that I robbed you. I was gonna say that during the speech. Then the music started during my speech and froze. Anyway, you know what it is. Congrats on this year and your music. Appreciate you as an artist and a friend. Much love." In a genre where beefs are commonplace, it's always very classy whenever someone takes the opportunity to acknowledge a fellow artist in a positive manner instead of going after them. Thought there might've been some resentment from others about how a white artist getting the biggest awards the industry has to offer in a genre that's predominantly African-American, the positivity the Seattle duo maintain in their music is undeniable. And while Daft Punk garnered the big awards, and though their categories haven't always been shown on the telecast many years after a rocky beginning, hip-hop had an opportunity to take center stage on this Grammy night thanks to both Kendrick Lamar and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, all thanks to having my two favorite performances.
With the 2014 edition of Grammy Night In America now in the books, a month of big events is now underway. Coming up on Sunday is Super Bowl XLVIII in New York City as the Denver a Broncos take on the Seattle Seahawks. And four days after the big game, the first day of competition commences at The XXIInd Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.
