DC WRAP: The Challenge: Rivals III EP2 and Real World Go Big EP's 8/9

BY DC CUEVA
@DC408Dxtr / @DC408DxNow

As we prepare for another week in the MTV Trifecta that begins tonight, we bring you another edition of the DC WRAP. We're a full round into the new Challenge season and things have already gotten as twisted as you can get, with more coming our way tonight. And we're now two-third's of a way through Real World Go Big or Go Home, with things about to blow up tomorrow night.
   Last week, we had episode 2 of Rivals III that saw the competitors find out everything related to the season's elimination battles that saw a major game-changing twist, one girl finally have her time to shine, while another team got a surprise early exit due to an injury. And then the next night in Sin City, we saw what appears to be the entire contingent of one roommate's friends arrive in town, more drama with the most dramatic girl in the house, and a new roommate arrive to instantly make his impact.
   Coming up, a recap of the week that was last week in the Trifecta, our recipients of the Winners List, a Challenge Fantasy League updaet and fan reaction. And on ExtraTime, a look at a Challenge legend and a trailblazer, along with two interesting viewers of last week's game-changing Challenge episode. All that, plus praise for one of sports TV's best, comes your way next.

 THINGS TO KNOW

SUPER-TWIST: We begin our review with the Rivals III bombshell, where after Jenna & Vince won the first mission they are given the usual control over who is put into elimination against the last place team. But as they talk to the AYTO teams at dinner and decide to throw them in, what they and the house doesn't know is the twist that TJ Lavin will give them. When the host arrives at the house, he tells them that instead of one team being put in as usual, TWO teams will be chosen by the Power Team into the Jungle, and those two teams will ultimately draw from a canister any of four skulls that will determine if they will be safe or will have to go into battle. Obviously, the house gets stung by this twist and will again wreck havoc on the teams as the season goes forward. Ultimately, Jenna & Vince put in Briana & Brandon, and then Devin & Cheyenne, while also safeguarding Nate & Christina on the premise that they could become easy lay-ups down the stretch. And Nate also has tears when there's drama brewing among him and the AYTO 2 kids. More on Team AYTO in a moment.

LEROY STUNG AGAIN: Last year, a small toe injury suffered by his bloodline Candice after the second challenge saw her and Leroy knocked out fairly early, and no one thought that lightning would strike again. Going into the first mission, his back was aching due to an injury which he explains on Twitter: "Pinched a nerve in my lower back wrestling in the pool night one of moving into the house. Idk why it wasn't aired." Roy Lee is in pain in the first two episodes, being barely able to compete in that first mission, and is taken to a hospital to be looked over by doctors in being given a inflammation shot, eventually returning with hopes to give it a try But then, TJ announces the news to the house that after talks with doctors and his back not healing fastly, Leroy is not able to participate any further, and in turn, Averey as well much to everyone's shock. Leroy adds, "Sciatica (Wiki: Pain radiating along the sciatic nerve, which runs down one or both legs from the lower back) is no joke.. I could barely walk.. There was no way I could compete. @mtv made the right decision...thanks to all the fans for the support. Greatly appreciated, I'm sure I'll be back πŸ‘ŠπŸΏπŸ’ͺ🏿."

JESSICA'S WEEK: As she comes to Mexico, Jessica has a boyfriend back home, but he's not being faithful to her and is, in fact, making her worse. Meanwhile, Tony has his sights on her as he tells Wes about his plans to get close to her, and Ginger tells him that she's "not a moped." Nonetheless, and of course with the news fresh of him being a dad in his mind, Tony decides to get in bed with Princess in his birthday suit. The next day, the man who she calls Mr. GQ tells a story to the house that he actually pooped in his pants and led him to take it all off. Meanwhile, Jessica heads to the phone to phone her man and call it all off, but it's their night together that becomes the talk of the house.
   Jessica also is in some drama with partner Johnny, where after they finished last in mission #1, concerns arise over whether they can put aside past history for the sake of this game. He doesn't mind where she goes in this game, but pleads for her to be kind and to work together. In the Jungle and the draw to see who will face them, Devin draws the black skull that sees him & Cheyenne stay to play Back It Up where climbing up walls with pots in hand and putting them into baskets would determine who stays, with this being a race to three. It's clear that Cheyenne didn't prepare to handle this jungle, and Team Portland picks up the win, and as Jess relishes her first elimination win, JR admits to him being the problem in their partnership and needs to believe more in her.

DIONE'S CARNY CREW & AMANDA'S THIRSTY: The next night in Vegas, Dione sees plenty of visitors, first with his ex-girlfriend Amanda arriving, followed by his close friends known as the Key West Carny Crew. That crew has unique nicknames they go by: Morning Beer, Bobby Ballsack, Sally Mike, Vajayjay and Pep, as in Pepperoni, Dione's nickname. CeeJai and Dean join them on their escapades around town... shades of what happened on Back to NOLA when Ryan saw his friends arrive and the house was at the deep end with him.
   Amanda, on the other hand, has an idea of what has happened to his guy and him getting close to Kailah in the house while he's been in Vegas. It's not surprising that those two girls are not being cordial with one another as Amanda tries to get revenge. But instead of going off on him or her, Kailah surprisingly takes out her frustration on Dean for acting differently with the visitors. Later, Amanda and Dione hook up in the shower with the door open, and then again in bed. It's gotten crazy.

JENNA SPARKS DRAMA... AGAIN: The saga between Jenna and her "boyfriend" back home in SC, Austin, just continues to unravel, just as the house is turning against her. In fact, Austin doesn't want to call her, and resort to emails as their only contact. As Amanda pleads for her to enjoy the rest of her time here and not worry about home matters, Dean uncharacteristically goes off on Jenna and suddenly she feels threatened. This tension escalates throughout the hour so much that CeeJai gets involved in wanting to protect Dean. Ceej knows that as someone of color Dean being accused of being threatening to her carries more than the usual weight of punishment and repression than others, and he suddenly breaks down. Jenna reveals her experience of seeing men being violent towards women, while he feels approaching her even if was safe is nonetheless taken to an extreme, and Ceej doesn't want to see Dean's character being taken away, and things go back to normal later.

SHOWTIME ARRIVES: After all that, when the house sets off on their latest mission that begins EP9, Matt the Producer gives them 24 hours to survive with just each other and support bags. And he drops a bomb on them in bringing out a new roommate: Bostonian transplant Dylan from NC. I literally thought that one of the roomies wouldn't survive but in the end they treat this as just a vacation and he moves into an 8-person house. Off the bat, Nicky Showtime begins to flirt with Jenna and then with Kailah, eventually making out with the ladder not once but twice perhaps to make the former jealous. Afterwards, he realizes he messed up and Kailah seems to have gotten played yet again. And then he hooks up with Jenna and she feels very much as home with him and she's happy. But that's not all.
   The mission for hour 2 of the Double Shot sees as if it was made for this stripper, and both Dylan and Dean are assigned to strip at the Sapphire Club, and just after Dean becomes a single man again. They practice their thing and then they kill it on stage as Dean becomes Malcolm Sex and Dylan does what he does best. Finally there's a sense of fun in this house.

 WINNERS' LIST
- Jessica: It's always impressive to win your first mission, but it's even better when you win your first Challenge elimination. Going into that first round, Jessica had lost with Bird on Rivals, put up a valiant effort vs Cara Maria and got beaten by Bradam on Exes. And also, there was both some things that happened before the Jungle of her difficulties with Johnny and her getting into bed with Tony. But Princess pulled together, put aside bickering with JR and won the season' first jungle handily. This is why she was my best sophomore showing on Free Agents and if the remaining Portlanders can keep themselves calm through all this, it could be a 4th straight finals appearance for RW 28.
- Devin: Sure, he lasted only one round, but Devin did make a more positive impression on us than when he made his MTV debut last year. Obviously, we know what happened on AYTO Season 3, but this time Big D was able to level off a bit and present himself in a new way. Big D also learned about how to ultimately master this Challenge game after the Houdini act he pulled off for Team Ohana, and it won't take one season for him to perfect the big leagues. Now he has something to build on.
- Dylan: When the morale of the RW Go Big suite has all been about drama, it seems Dylan has come at the right time to finally lighten the mood in Vegas. He came to the desert as that newbie who all of us thought would be the replacement to one of the roomies for not surviving that night, but he does come here to being some fun to the plate. And after creating a love triangle with him, Kailah and Jenna, and going stripping with Dean, he's on his way to becoming a fan favorite roommate.

Now, your reaction to last week's episodes, starting with last Wednesday...

> Rivals III
@dc408dxnow: So Jenna and Vince won mission #1 and now have something on their hands to choose here. But Leroy is also hurt & there's concerns for him.
‏@dc408dxnow: And he's on his way to the hospital, and if he can't go on, Averey goes home too. And what about Jessica & Johnny? Possible early exit here?
@dc408dxnow: There's been a history with Jessica & Johnny through the years, they met at the airport at beginning of RWPDX. Now they're at their throats.
@dc408dxnow: I remember Johnny getting in Jess' face in PDX & unlike most other rivalries here, this one definitely has some validity to it. #DCChallenge
@dc408dxnow: Camila talking to Johnny & encouraging him to get over this bickering for game's sake, otherwise they're gonna be toast just like that
@dc408dxnow: Leroy's returned, has a shot and will try to give it a shot if he's alright. Can't be true if he is first one out after what happened LY
@dc408dxnow: Jenna & Vince have dinner and thinking of who to invite to the table. Nate is easy target after his bailout in the plane. Curve ball...
@dc408dxnow: Now Brando & Bri, and now they're gonna be put in against PDX. Not surprised about it bc they're rookies, smart move for the power team
@dc408dxnow: Meanwhile, Tony & Jess are talking, and so are the girls. He's talking to Wes about her, & she's been in a bad relationship. Alliance here?
@dc408dxnow: We've got ourselves another relationship: Jess & Tony, and there's our first naked points of this season. Him in bday suit. #DCChallenge
@dc408dxnow: And Jess talking to her guy back home and she's going off on him. Tough to see Princess in this way. Stay strong, girl.
@dc408dxnow: TJ has bad news: Leroy is unable to continue, and Averey has to go too. Two straight early exits for Lean Body. Shocking, needless to say.
@dc408dxnow: We had house vote in Rivals 1/2, but power team has sole power here. Johnny/Jess & Brandon/Bri. And now another pick here. Game-changer.
‏@dc408dxnow: Mega-Twist: power team will choose TWO teams instead of one, joining losing couple in elimination. This changes everything to say the least.
@dc408dxnow: Jenna & Vince stay true to Nate & Christina by putting in Devin & Cheyenne instead of them in elimination. It's getting twisted around here
@dc408dxnow: I know Cory was all into Cheyenne last week & on TW, and here they are. And now comes the fun part. It's the Jungle. What will happen here?
@dc408dxnow: Johnny & Jessica, Brandon & Briana and Devin & Cheyenne. Now the skull draw w/ the can. Black means safety. White is danger. #DCChallenge
@dc408dxnow: .@CHEYnotShy.... Safe. @blacuesta... Safe. @Tindel10 now up and if he gets the white skull, they're stay in this game.
@dc408dxnow: .@Tindel10 gets the lucky skull. @CHEYnotShy @MTVDevinWalker stay in to face Jess & Johnny. #BackItUp: Pottery at top, three & you're safe.
@dc408dxnow: Jess had early exit on Exes2, made good run on Free Agents. Johnny was 1-1 in Dome on Exes2. And D & Chey are in this for 1st time here.
‏@dc408dxnow: So, they're into this. And red gets the first one. PDX follows. Chey is gassing out a bit as they're at the 2nd stage. Vets have edge here.
@dc408dxnow: Johnny & Jess proving their worth here with 2nd pot. Dev & Chey struggling to stay up here. But green gets it done.
@dc408dxnow: Well, #TeamPortland gets this done. If they can stay focused, I feel @JohnnyReilly_ @MtvJess could make it 4-4 in finals trips for RWPDX.
@dc408dxnow: They both played a part in the outcome of #AYTO S3 last year, but this time here it's one & done for @MTVDevinWalker @CHEYnotShy.
@dc408dxtr: @CSUGradAkirk so, thoughts on tonight buddy?
- @CSUGradAkirk: @dc408dxtr liking this twist happy for Jess tonight
- @dc408dxtr: @CSUGradAkirk yeah, like the twist too, really makes the vote interesting, as well as the draw there. And she's my winner of the night there
- @CSUGradAkirk: @dc408dxtr  and another thought I think Vince is going to try wayyy to hard to be like his cousin which will get annoying
@CSUGradAkirk: Game over time for #Rivals3
‏@CSUGradAkirk: Most awkward dinner ever with Vince and Jenna #Rivals3
@CSUGradAkirk: @JennaCompono  using the word layup hahahaha #Rivals3
@CSUGradAkirk: @CamilaMTV  saying Tony needs to be fixed is soooo true #Rivals3

@CSUGradAkirk: Wait three teams in elimination #wow #rivals3
@CSUGradAkirk: Can't stand this Nate kid #Rivals3
@CSUGradAkirk: It's the draw #Rivals3
@CSUGradAkirk: I wonder what Leroy and @MTV_Candice first convo was when Leroy told her what happened both can relate on something else now
@CSUGradAkirk: never thought I'd say this but I hope to see @MTVDevinWalker  back on MTV wasn't a fan of his AYTO but 2 eps on Challenge he was great
@CSUGradAkirk: Warriors win and one of my favs @MtvJess  wins her first elimination round #GoodDay #Rivals3
@CSUGradAkirk: Really don't get all this dislike of Leroy yes he's struggled on challenges but is the worst challenger not even close
@busdriversroute: Girls being in terrible relationships is where Tony shines. That's his bread and butter #TheChallengeRivals3
@busdriversroute: There's a 25% chance Jess doesn't even have a boyfriend. There may not be anyone on the other end of that call. #TheChallengeRivals3
@busdriversroute: Losing Leroy and Averey before the first elimination has me like... #TheChallengeRivals3
@busdriversroute: I would take Nate's man card here but that is LONGGGGGGG gone from his AYTO days. #TheChallengeRivals3
@busdriversroute: It's going to be awkward when Nelson & Amanda come out next week & no one knows them. Gotta keep those demographics! #TheChallengeRivals3
@AceNichols33: Who's watching #TheChallengeRivals3 ? RETWEET.
@AceNichols33: Calling @MtvJess a moped is way worse than calling Jess a bucket. @ThatCoral #TheChallengeRivals3
@AceNichols33: Nooooo not Leroy WTF I'm gonna go ape shit!!!!! #TheChallengeRivals3
@AceNichols33: This is an extremely racist game of chance in this elimination. πŸ˜‚ #BlackSkullsMatter #TheChallengeRivals3

@RealityRadioPod: I'm liking Devin's motivation to win! #TheChallengeRivals3 @MTVDevinWalker
@RealityRadioPod: “@K_Clay13: Can someone explain how I just watched an hour long episode of @ChallengeMTV #Rivals3 and didn't see a single challenge, just an elimination” RT Yes! That's what was missing!!!! A freaking challenge. I felt this episode was missing something....lol.
@RealityRadioPod: Just realized, where was @Dario_medrano_ @KellyAnneJudd @MTVASHLEYBROOKE @NicolexoRamos in this episode?!?!?!?!?! #TheChallengeRivals3 @MTV
@theballisorange: We're gonna get a #THISCHANGESEVERYTHING tonight, I can feel it in my bones #TheChallengeRivals3
@theballisorange: Oh the Challenge opening is that time Homer Simpson ate the ghost pepper, cool.
@theballisorange: Leroy going to the hospital while Vince can't be eliminated is like that time Kyle got a hemorrhoid and Cartman owned an amusement park.
@theballisorange: I'd want to quit too if I had to hang out with Jess all the time
@theballisorange: Jess forgets Johnny literally pulled his dick out during an argument once
@theballisorange: Tonight we learned if you go on a date with Jenna absolutely do not pick anything that involves food or talking
@theballisorange: Jenna's been studying The Eli Manning Guide to Knowing Your Coworkers' Names
@theballisorange: Wes with the moped joke like its 1997
@theballisorange: Shocking revelation that Jess's boyfriend doesn't respect her
@theballisorange: Jessica breaking up with her boyfriend on a reality show when she's only gonna be away from home for a week is so Challenge
@theballisorange: Get these people and Emmy, this is the best editing I've ever seen.
@theballisorange: Leroy every season like
@theballisorange: THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING
@theballisorange: TJ definitely had to be filled in on their names just there
@theballisorange: It's not a reality show until somebody gets mad about somebody else being fake and then the "fake" person takes it WAY too personally
@theballisorange: Nate believes in Safe Spaces
@theballisorange: Jess calling you out for being emotional is as rock bottom as it gets
@theballisorange: They did this purely for the emojis, didn't they? πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€
‏@theballisorange: We've had two hours and 15 minutes of Rivals 3 and the only people out are Leroy and Avery

> Real World Go Big
@dc408dxnow: Well, we begin w/ the house ganging up on Jenna after what we saw last week. And her & Austin are the talk of this whole penthouse.
@dc408dxnow: Morning Beer. Aka Bryan. And Dione's gonna go wild when he flies here. And there's Amanda... Got a sense an Ex-Plosion will take place here
‏@dc408dxnow: Amanda's gonna come and I'm sure this will get out of hand when worlds collide. And we're hearing more about Dean after last week's split
@dc408dxnow: It's Skeletons all over again: there's Morning Beer & Amanda. Dione is over the moon excited, but Kailah is not pleased at all. #DCRealWorld
@dc408dxnow: Amanda is in the shower, and Dione is inside. And you guessed it, something's going on. And now it's the Dione Show: more friends coming.
@dc408dxnow: Christmas has come early for @MTVDIONE. His ex is in town. His friends are in town. It's indeed a Key West Carnival. #DCRealWorld
‏@dc408dxnow: They're out on the town. And note, the extra layers there: it does get a bit cold there in late fall & winter since Vegas is in a desert.
‏@dc408dxnow: Jenna twerking on Amanda as Kailah watches. They will not be looking eye to eye when she flies home. And Dione is the focus here
@dc408dxnow: 3AM, and they're home. Amanda talking to the girls. Dean watching over and getting into words w/ Jenna. Starting to get tense here.
@dc408dxnow: Well it seems now that Dean's now speaking for everyone that the folks are tired of seeing this lady. Bomb is about to go off #DCRealWorld
@dc408dxnow: It's almost as if this is the Ex-Plosion house w/ Kailah, Amanda & Dione being Jamie, Hailey & Thomas. It's an awkward house indeed
@dc408dxnow: Jenna is feeling threatened by Dean and she thought he was gonna go off on her. But doesn't understand that he's that gentle giant
@dc408dxnow: Everyone's at dinner w/ Dione & friends. Meanwhile Kailah, Jenna & Sabrina are at SLS, the former Sahara place for some clubbin'.
@dc408dxnow: And it's almost as if word for to them about this: the rest have caught up with them. And the guys are all over the club girls.
@dc408dxnow: And now, Kailah is going off on Dean for having his personality changed up for the club. Now things are getting more fiery up in here.
@dc408dxnow: Well now, it's safe to say that @MTVCeeJai is now getting riled up. We're about to have fireworks in this top-floor penthouse #DCRealWorld
@dc408dxnow: Amanda waited for an opportunity to pounce, and it's on now. And Dean is now in tears over what's been happening to him now. He's a good guy
@dc408dxnow: The heartbreaking tragedy CeeJai went through is so hard to comprehend as she opens up to Dean. Hard to imagine what it feels like for them.
@dc408dxnow: The day after, & Kailah feels sorry for going off on this usually reserved good man. And it feels different after what transpired last night
@dc408dxnow: Now another mission: they have to survive a night in the desert. It's about to get real in this playground known as Southern Nevada.
@dc408dxnow: The mission: 24 hours in the Vegas desert with bags. And a horn is there. If one blows it, they will go home. This is a true survival test.
@dc408dxnow: And who is this guy who's joined this bunch? Welcome to the #RealWorld @Nicky_Showtime.
@dc408dxnow: They're in the middle of the Vegas desert & out of civilization. A Bostonian has joined this bunch to survive these next 24 hours.
@dc408dxnow: Kailah has revealed her goodies as they enjoy this campfire. Jenna is out of her mind knowing she's stuck w/ these kids for this time
‏@dc408dxnow: I thought one of the roommates would bail out but again it's all for naught. Another ones in the book, and Dylan is the newbie here
@dc408dxnow: Kailah is being attracted to Dylan and I sense it'll get even more interesting w/ her having become close to three roommates here
@dc408dxnow: Last night, we waved farewell to a Bostonian who mastered a miracle. Tonight, another guy from New England takes his place in the Trifecta.
@dc408dxnow: And Dylan is a stripper who put on a fine move on Jenna and that may have put him on the outs w/ the group. We'll see that shapes up
‏@dc408dxnow: Dylan & Jenna are all alone. They're clicking on his 1st day & finally she's got a reason to be happy in Vegas after all she's been through.
‏@dc408dxnow: And it's almost as if this was on cue: Dylan & the guys are gonna go stripping for next mission. This is up his alley & he will ace this.
@dc408dxnow: Dylan is seeing Jenna and Kailah. He doesn't know what to do next in enjoying his first week juggling these girls in this pad
@dc408dxnow: Jenna's talking about Dylan to her mom, meanwhile he's kissing Kailah. Now we've got a good old house threesome. We always love those on RW.
@dc408dxnow: Dylan makes out w/ Kailah in the elevator within view of Jenna. Now that's three guys that Kailah has locked lips with here.
@dc408dxnow: Feels like Jenna & Austin are headed for Splitsville now that she's into Dylan, and after all she's gone through w/ guy back home
@dc408dxnow: The guys are going stripping here for their mission. They should ace this, & they do very easily. Dylan's gonna cut it off w/ girl in NC
‏@dc408dxnow: Well, that was an odd way for a guy who's settling in to cut it off w/ his girlfriend for the one he's been close with right off the bat
@dc408dxnow: It's Dylan's birthday, and they're at Brooklyn Bowl to enjoy bowling in the dark. Now she's into this guy and enjoying herself again.
@dc408dxnow: And for Kailah, she's gonna now let the two enjoy this time and not get in the way of things.
@dc408dxnow: Well, Dylan got down to his undies. And now here comes Amanda to hear about what's happened to Jungle Boy
‏@dc408dxnow: There's little Dione. Bananas has his bobble head and there's his own mini doll. And now we've got password.
‏@dc408dxnow: I remember playing these kinds of games in our class during free time of those that we saw on TV that became their own board games
@dc408dxnow: And the guys make it look almost as easy as 1-2-3. The guy and his doll are together again
@CSUGradAkirk: Saw a picture of Diones ex that's going to be on the show tonight @kailah_casillas  is a trillion times prettier then she is
@CSUGradAkirk: Absolutely not feeling Amanda please  one bit #realworldgbgh
@CSUGradAkirk: Dione and his friends remind me so much of Ryan from Nola's  Brother and Cousin @JustJem24 @AshleeFeldman  #RealWorldGoBig
@CSUGradAkirk: Get off my tv Please!! #realworldgobig
@CSUGradAkirk: Preach @Dean_BP   Make bring some sense into her #realworldgobig
@CSUGradAkirk: @kailah_casillas > Amanda please it's no contest #RealWorldGoBig
@CSUGradAkirk: If the nicest dude in the house @Dean_BP  has an issue with you then it's not the house it's you #RealWorldGoBig
@CSUGradAkirk: Really wanna like Jenna but her words and actions on the show make it very hard for me to do so #realworldgobig
@CSUGradAkirk: 3 min and 12 seconds later best thing since they've started the whole words on screens #realworldgobig
@CSUGradAkirk: Idk if I agree or disagree with Kailah on dean on the fence #realworldgobig
@CSUGradAkirk: This is the only episode that Dean has been a little different not going to hold that against him though #RealWorldGoBig
@CSUGradAkirk: really wish these two episodes had there own weeks they were my favorite episodes of the season #RealWorldGoBig
@CSUGradAkirk: I wish @Nicky_Showtime  would've been in the house before the leak episode Jenna would been so much more watchable on the show

A CHALLENGE LIFE: DERRICK KOSINSKI
When this Rivals III season started, we also had a return engagement of sorts in the Twitter world as one of the vets returned from a few years' hiatus from the world's most interactive social platform. And if there is one person who all of us who follow this thing called the MTV Trifecta can thank for having an industry of covering not only The Challenge, but Real World and eventually AYTO, then it is the man who is being chronicled in this first piece of ExtraTime.
   It was twelve years ago that Derrick Kosinski made his MTV debut as that confident, cocky and energetic 5'6" Chicagoan on the 13th & final season of Road Rules, X-Treme in summer 2004. When we first met him on that RV trip through Europe, he was very athletic as a high school sports captain and a youth football coach. That season, we saw him get into just about everything wild and extreme that defined the original 3rd leg of the Trifecta - including getting into a boxing ring for a fight. He would translate that success into doing nine Challenges starting with a respectable rookie run on Battle of the Sexes 2 and going all the way most recently to Cutthroat in fall 2010.
   Despite being one of The Challenge's smallest players, Derrick had a unmatched heart and a knack for surprising everyone with his fierce intensity and athleticism. Strong, determined and feared, he was also one who always preferred to leave the strategy, politics & house drama to everyone else and fly under the radar, which explains his amiable and friendly attitude as a Challenge legend greatly respected by the MTV family. He boasts an impressive record of three finals wins out of four apperances - Inferno 3, The Island and Ruins, has a 7-4 elimination record, and has collected over $175,000 in prize money for his efforts, along with so many great moments on his ten MTV appearances as well.
   And of course, Derrick was the partner of the late Diem Brown when she made her Challenge debut on Fresh Meat I ten years ago, and in the days where Challengers actually spent time out of the house more often then they do now, it was on a training run they went on together in the streets of Northern New South Wales, Australia that he found out first about the star's battle with ovarian cancer that became one of the greatest tales ever told in the history of this ecosystem. And he was in Washington, D.C. last year as part of the MTV contingent that supported Diem's sister Megan when she spoke on Capitol Hill in support of The Ovarian Cancer National Alliance and a caucus supported by congressman Sean Duffy and wife Rachel Campos-Duffy, fellow Real World originals Puck & Norman, and Challenge Free Agents champ Laurel.
   But Bulldog, as he is nicknamed, is a trailblazer of sorts in a field we take for granted now in this digital age. In spring 2010 while Fresh Meat II was airing, Derrick decided to launch his own self-titled Derrick Kosinski Podcast, which ultimately became Ultimate Challenge Radio. With the large Rolodex he established over his tenure, he brought on fellow competitors spanning the spectrum of both the big names and the upstarts to break down the episodes and discuss the stories of this always fascinating part of the MTV world. He interviewed everyone from Bananas, Kenny, CT, Wes and Mark Long, to Nany, Abram, Jasmine, Knight and others, as they shared their first-hand insight from FM II, Cutthroat, Rivals I, Exes I and Battle of the Seasons II, along with three Real World seasons. With the pod offering unique perspective, Ultimate Challenge Radio became compulsory listening for everyone who follows the RW/Challenge franchise and set the tone for the extensive MTV coverage by every form of media there is out there, including DCBLOG.
   The UCR website description reads, "The podcast interviews some the most entertaining and explosive personalities MTV has to offer. Not only do these people have on screen attraction capabilities, but also they can tell one heck of a story. The reason why these people have been chosen to entertain millions of viewers across the world is because of their intricate, inspiring, and compelling life stories. Derrick picks up those stories where MTV drops them off and continues to give the audience what they want, which is MORE from the people they have grown to love and somewhat become addicted to, season after season. Ultimate Challenge Radio uses the incredible, physically demanding, and emotional challenges endured by these competitors as a platform. We take what they have displayed on their television experiences and catapult their strong opinions into current genres of life, sports, and entertainment."
   Since Derrick stepped away from webcasting after BOTS to tend to family matters (Family First, always) and him being a CrossFit athlete as well, my fellow MTV insiders Andrew Kirk, Brian Cohen, Ali Lasher, Whitney McGriff & Stefan Sanders and others have filled his shoes in offering thoughts and analysis on the RW/Challenge franchise (and ultimately, AYTO), as well as continuing his tradition of insightful interviews. Along with RW Back to San Diego's Alex Govere, and fellow Challenger Brandon Nelson who also did webcasts as well, and AfterBuzz TV too, it's because of Derrick that we have a whole business of covering these shows on the audio medium, on webcasts and on blogs such as this one. My iPod features many of these shows covering the Trifecta and I listen to them a lot both when I'm out & about and while doing this blog work. And in a way, DCBLOG models its coverage on the UCR podcast's philosophy by going behind the hype and the hookups to look at this Trifecta world in a unique way in focusing on the shows and the people.
   So Derrick, welcome back to social world. And thank you for giving us this great industry of covering the Real World & Challenge franchise through the power of audio and webcasting, and inspiring us fans to cover the shows we love. Give him a Twitter follow at @DerrickMTV2.

HIP-HOP AND HOCKEY ARE WATCHING...
While our thing here is to focus on the shows & its people and not mention anything related to what we like to refer to as "The Numbers Game," outside of NBA and NHL playoff action last week's Rivals III was the highest-rated original cable show last Wednesday. And among those viewers who tuned in to what was, in essence, the second part of the premiere last week were two very interested spectators from the lands of hip-hop and hockey.

● First, one of hip-hop's rising stars is Hoodie Allen, who emerged onto the scene back in 2009 as a MTV Woodies nominee and who took his stage name from the noted movie icon. Hoodie went on tour with Mike Posner and G-Eazy, among others, while he released his first three EP's before he dropped his debut studio album, People Keep Talking, in 2014. That was where he landed his big break when he got Motley Crue's Tommy Lee to appear in the video of his lead single, "Show Me What You're Made Of," and that landed him a Top-2 iTunes single debut, a spot with Chiddy Bang and MAX on their tour, and, with a tweet to Pete Wentz, the opening act spot on Fall Out Boy's summer tour with Wiz Khalifa. Hoodie has just released his sophomore effort, Happy Camper.
   Hoodie's tweet to @TJLavin reads, "‏@tjlavin addicted to the new season hahaha," and adds to show producer Danny Wascou, "shoulda invited me out to this one!" with the producer responding, "That would have been AWESOME!!!" Remember, Yellowcard and Shinedown cameo'ed in the opening titles of two past Challenge seasons.

● And the second interested viewer comes from a sport whose playoffs are widely considered the best postseason in sports. Instead of watching the St. Louis Blues run the Dallas Stars out of American Airlines Arena in Game 7 of their Stanley Cup Playoff series, 9-season NHL veteran and 2-time member of Team Canada's World Junior Championship title teams, Zach Boychuk opted to tune in to last week's Challenge episode.
   His tweet reads, "The Challenge is like Bachelor Pad or Bachelor in Paradise on steroids @ChallengeMTV #TheChallengeRivals3 #drama πŸ™…πŸ‘Š." It's always good to have an athlete watch the fifth major pro sport, and him following many Challengers including yours truly also caught the attention of Sarah as well.

#BPLonNBC: BEST IN SPORTS TV
Finally - going off topic to continue with the theme in Derrick's podcast and what we had after the Rivals III 'Pulse of the Sports Emmys and Katie Nolan celebrating her unlikely award win, as you know I'm into sports television and admire great quality work done by networks in covering the biggest moments and greatest stories - and it serves as a basis for DCBLOG's Trifecta coverage. This past week saw the conclusion of another season of one of my favorite sports to watch on TV and it's produced by the team that I and so many others in the industry call the best in the business.
   Until the dramatic final Sunday of the 2011-12 season, soccer's Premier League - while being the world's most-watched sports league, was a niche property in America. But Sergio Augero's stoppage-time winner to give Manchester City their first English top-fight title over crosstown rivals Man United gave reason for NBC Sports to bid for U.S. broadcast rights when they came up that fall after the London Olympics. Realizing the potential of NBC Universal's strategy to bring this property to new fans when the league was on ESPN 2 and the lower-distributed FOX Soccer Channel, the news of the Peacock snaring the EPL shifted the pendulum in this emerging sport and gave NBC Sports Network a coveted property to join the NHL (and ultimately, NASCAR) in its growing stable.
   The first day of the first season of NBC's EPL stint on Saturday, August 17, 2013 also coincided with the ambitious launch of FOX Sports 1. And while FS1 has had most of the buzz for reasons related to a Goliath not keeping pace with a four-lettered 800-pound gorilla of sports media who has also encountered their own negative headlines as well, it's the former that has garnered, by far, the greatest long-term success. NBC's ambitious plans saw the company present live all 380 matches of the Premier League season on NBCSN, NBC, Telemundo, Live Extra and the Extra Time package, including games not even shown live in Britain - federally mandated there to protect the gate. Along with that are many hours of studio shows, shoulder programming and match encores, and of course host Rebecca Lowe and play-by-play man Arlo White. This wall-to-wall coverage enticed Michael Davies & Roger Bennett, the duo better known as the Men in Blazers, to move to NBC after the 2014 World Cup, and their weekly show provides a hilarious look at their greatest footballing passion.
   In the same way that the NBA was handled greatly during a golden era for the league and the network in the '90s - and as they do now for the NFL, golf and the Olympics, the exceptionally high quality coverage, and the great breadth & depth of NBC's commitment to give the Premier League the treatment it deserves in the U.S. has been quite an accomplishment both critically and with fans. They have taken a previously overlooked sports property in this country, given it the kind of solid treatment it provided to all of its sports coverage over the years, have made American fans the most lucky fanbase in the world in being able to experience this league like never before, and have made the Premier League more well-known than ever before in this cultural melting pot of ours.
   And coupled with the tremendous exposure and solid growth soccer has been given here during, in between and after the last two World Cups, this success has translated into record viewership and increased exposure for the league on this side of the pond, leading to a much-celebrated long-term extension last summer. It's also turned an often-remote TV time period of Saturday & Sunday mornings into NBC's own, with Formula One racing, the Tour de France and overseas golf including this summer's Open Championship joining it to make NBCSN and Golf Channel sports fans' first destination on a sports weekend.
   And in the wake of Championship Sunday where NBC utilized its entire network suite to showcase the season's entire last full match day, and perhaps the most-exciting season ever in Arlo White's own hometown team Leicester City becoming the most improbable champions in Premier League history, congrats go out to the entire NBC team on a job well done...looking forward to the Rio Olympics and the rest of your network's Championship Season. You're the best in the business.
