It's January... that time of year when we turn the page to new beginnings, fresh starts, and hopes that the future will treat us better than what we had to endure the previous twelve months. It also means, right now especially, returns to things we were used to to begin the year -- from not worrying about hearing 24/7 Christmas music until next November, to getting to travel safely again after all this time being stuck at home... and even this site's byline above has gone a makeover in it now displaying my new LinkTree. And in the case of the subject of this first season preview post of 2023, it's something that we've not been able to say on here since before this world lost its collective mind in so many ways.
When DCBLOG started our MTV coverage ten years ago, it was during the last normal Real World season in Portland (coming this Friday to Netflix), followed by Season 24 of The Challenge - the second Rivals edition and the first of what would be five titles for C.T. Then in early 2014 came not one, but two shows that would help to foretell the next generation of this world: the first was the twisted Real World in Ex-Plosion, whose theme of exes invading San Francisco not only gave us Cory Wharton but also predated the eventual arrival of Ex On The Beach that spring to the British tellies and where he would ultimately find love when it arrived to our shores four years later.

Seven seasons followed in the footsteps of Amber, Ethan and The Originals: from memorable characters who later crossed over to The Challenge and other facets of pop culture, and a girl who's enjoying the good life of being a YouTube fighter's girlfriend... to another who's found her perfect match in that MTV king, and the guy who we saw playing a ukulele in New Orleans but who has made some sweet music during the time that his original show has been away from our lives. And the last time we were engaged in the world of AYTO, it was more than just finding love but also finding out about who a group of people really were when you don't have to love someone of the opposite gender.
Four long years ago in 2019 was the most recent AYTO season that gave another definition to the term "Love Wins," and now it's time for the next chapter in this journey to begin. This time, there are a whole bunch of things that are new: a new platform from which this show will be airing in the new way of watching TV. There's also a new host who knows very well this world of romance from having to catch those who are frontin' and who will later find out if the singles' exes are their next. And there is an facet that, during the winter holidays that just past, will bring an element of recent Challenge seasons and the biggest global sports events to this show: the fact that love can be from anywhere on this planet.
It has been a while since we got to say this: after the break, DCBLOG offers you our very first look at the return engagement of MTV's Are You The One?, as Season 9 takes up residency on Paramount+ with our very first Global season of the social love experiment. And at last, welcome back lovebirds...
STRATEGY ROOM
A Primer & A History Lesson
DCBLOG has chronicled every step of the AYTO journey, spanning each episode, Truth Booth, Matchup and hookup across its eight seasons... and it'll be no different as we'll follow the singles from when they enter the Spanish villa until they learn their fate of love & $1 million come springtime. We plan to switch things up when it comes to covering the show which we'll explain at the end of this, but an element to our blog coverage has been the Strategy Room. It's our chance to go deep into the house's road to the million from dissecting the odds a couple may be a perfect match to trying to figure out who the matchup beams could be before the house figures that out.
And it has been quite a while -- some forty months -- since the all-LGBTQ+ friendly Season 8... so it will mean that we got a lot of explaining to do when it comes to how this show works. But if you haven't really gotten a feel of what this show is all about -- or if you're feeling curious while watching some famous alums beast The Challenge: Ride or Dies, then trust us: you will fall in love with AYTO... they got their start on that show many years ago. It's something this blogger knows very well, having rolled with it ever since one of the original castmates liked one of my Instagram posts in late 2013, which led to me giving the show a try and, in turn, gave me a reality dating show to become a fan of, the same way my parents had with Bachelor Nation.
The ones chosen to be on this show came to Hawaii, and to succeeding seasons ever since, having to go through the kind of long process of matchmaking that would make going to Harvard feel a little more easier: each season, single women & men aspire to be on AYTO having gone through little luck in the love department -- from failed first dates to no success swiping on a Tinder app. Once they're chosen, they go through a thorough matchmaking process that includes questionnaires and interviews with just about everyone related to the girls & guys. And once the cast gets chosen and flown out to paradise, there comes compatibility tests that will help them find their significant other.
When they all move together, the singles will be living with each other with their perfect match located somewhere in there -- all they need is to get matched up with them in that crowded house of 20+ people. And the show offers them plenty of opportunities to win luxurious dates with the person of their choosing -- and that's where the eyes of any Challenge scouts watching will peek in on those getaway challenges. Whoever gets chosen there goes on dates outside the house, while the rest of the kids decide who to select for a trip to the lone place where any match can be confirmed: the Truth Booth... and the lasers inside will determine if they pack up to spend the rest of their stay in the Honeymoon Suites off of the property. And if basketball teams live or die by the three, in this high-stakes game the house's hopes can often hinge on one Truth Booth pick, which has broken many hearts in the past.
Not only do the couples' fates lie in that small room, the house can win or lose this whole thing in the Truth Booth -- ask the group who had to follow in the Originals' footsteps. But the destiny of the house lies in the nighttime spectacular that is a Matchup Ceremony: the contestants dress up in nice clothing (or in two guys' case back when it began, dusting off their Halloween costumes) to pick their matches from the opposite gender in front of the show's host and lock in their choice with their hands to a tablet. Then, they sit back to see how they all fare: one light beam in the night's sky indicates one match... light them all up, and it's game, set, match, confetti & $1 million. Not light one light in one matchup, and they record a blackout -- and it costs them money. And they'll have ten tries to get it all done.
With the exception of the first one (they figured it out in just nine tries), every season has come down to a win or go home Game 7 scenario in the tenth and final week. Only one time did the goal of money & confetti went out the window... and don't bother to bring up that Dominican nightmare to Kam, Derrick H. & their Season 5 group. That was only part of a controversial winter where the cat is still out over whether production robbed them of $800,000... and where some rather sketchy things was going on also that season -- these two DCBLOG posts will help to explain things further.
But three of our Ride or Die Challengers also stared down what looked to be certain defeat in joining that Season 5 group when their Seasons 3 and 6 casts were so obsessed with no-match couples and just couldn't muster putting that many couples into the Suites. The house on the former -- perhaps the most-famous grad class this show has ever had -- had seemingly given up... that is, until Devin was given one chance to figure things out, and him figuring things out with red cups & a quarter in making up an eight-light deficit began his legend. And it was only to be topped two years later by the Season 6 crew when they, too, also found themselves behind the 8-ball... only to light up the ten lights they needed to be $1 million richer... and it made 28-3 feel inferior to their epic comeback in New Orleans.
Those two seasons alone are responsible for a slew of memorable castmates -- the former gave us not only Big D. but also Nelson, Amanda, Hunter and Britni who followed him to Challenge land, as did his Rivals III partner Cheyenne who now represents Team MTV in the Teen Mom sorority -- and we can't forget about Mike who started these crossovers when he went onto The Real World. The first two guys there also did a season of Ex On The Beach, as did Nurys when she, Diandra & Malcolm also washed up ashore as did some of their fellow Season 6'ers... and last year, non-match Clinton & Uche tied the knot. But you probably know about their best-known member of that NOLA cast: his experience with a ukulele later followed Tai Verdes to musical stardom during the pandemic.
The Season 5 cast might not have gotten the money, but in addition to the Killa one we all know who Taylor is when she found her perfect match in Cory in the EOTB 1 house, and that's translated to one-half of the baby foursome in Cheyenne's land. Tori has become a Challenge staple in five years, but her Season 4 cast also included reality jack of all trades Asaf (he's also done Total Madness, Big Brother Israel, So You Think You Can Dance and Ninja Warrior) and Jake Paul's girlfriend Julia Rose who's made plenty of noise from the World Series to the Hollywood sign. And Vinny's crush on Double Shot at Love, Maria, began her quest for love on Season 7... and that's just a few notable alumni of this pleasure.

NAMES LINKED TO INSTAGRAM PROFILES
This year's format will see us return to where it not a perfect 10 that gets you the $1 million, but rather it's one number better. Starting with Season 5 (and with the exception of Season 8 last time out), the occupancy rate in the AYTO house is at twenty-two singles... which makes 11 for 11 the magic number for the money. That places the morning line odds of the house getting to the combination that unlocks the key to Fort Knox at season's end at an astronomically high 1 in 39.9 million. And we have a new host taking over the role of guiding us through this journey in Catfish co-host and new EOTB emcee Kamie Crawford... but neither of those are the most important element to Season 9.
We just came off of the most memorable World Cup soccer tournament in our lifetime in Qatar, plus two Olympic Games in six months that brought the world back together again in Tokyo and Beijing. Each Challenge season over the past five years have become a mini-Olympics of sorts in that those from different countries have donned that Under Armour jersey with TJ, Bananas and friends. And if you've seen a few of my IG posts, you might find that I have become a fan of sorts of the global pop supergroup Now United, who will soon have a 19th nation join in with a new member from next door in Portugal.
Whether it's three of my biggest passions of sports, reality TV and music, or if you grew up taking geography class when you were young, there seems to be something special whenever you see different flags all gather around in one place. It's the idea of the world coming together after this time apart that offers the theme for this AYTO return... taking place in the midst of what's known as "Cuffing Season" a month out from Valentine's Day, and where the idea is that love can be anywhere in the world.
When it felt safe enough for those in charge of casting this lovefest to travel around the globe once again, the focus turned to doing something AYTO had never done but something that other MTV shows have been able to do the last few years: cast those from outside the North American continent to get a chance at love -- and that includes plenty of English accents. The fact that Paramount+ launched two years ago and has expanded its reach to almost 50 global markets made bringing this show to streamville a relatively easy thing to do... love is, after all - and like sports and music, a universal language.
Any cast might fit the stereotype of what a normal bunch for these shows might be nowadays -- those who have big social media followings, those who are Instagram-worthy and some who are using this show as a hopeful launchpad to fame... and sure that is the case here. But of course, what brings all these people here is, obviously -- and to put it in alternative words, the fact that they just don't have any luck in the love department. And the singles who come to Spain for this Global Edition of Are You The One? hail from across America and from six other foreign countries looking for their one... and a difference between them and other casts before them: most of these people are older.
We and the rest of the press (both the fourth estate and these fan blogs) weren't provided with what's always the bedrock to any media outlet's preview material in those biographical capsules, so this site has to dig deep to do our own research and still find some interesting factoids about a few in this class that we here will sure elaborate on during the space of the coming months. But we start things off with the one person who MTV fans might've seen before -- that is, if you have a deep memory sticking around for some midweek Sunday Scaries during the very first Challenge season that gave away the same amount of money as this show.
❤️ AQEL CARSON • 🇺🇸 Chula Vista, CA: In 2017, Aqel came to MTV's Fear Factor reboot and faced his fears in front of Ludacris... but he watched his TV debut while recovering from a motorcycle crash that almost paralyzed him. Like it was for Ethan after he went through a similar ordeal, Aqel defied the doctors' words to walk again -- but love has alluded him. And the insurance salesman has his eyes on girls similar to him (Latina, dark skin) and being open to exploring new things.
❤️ ANISSA AGUILAR • 🇺🇸 Los Angeles, CA: At first, her name may sound like Challenger Aneesa... but her name has an "i," not an "e." But she has an unusual job: instructional math coach -- she may have to rely on that to craft the road to 11 lights. As far as her lost love life is concerned, the three words that Anissa describes herself are "genuine, trustworthy, and loyal," and her preference is to go for the guys who she might be drawn to emotionally. She's also one whose type prefers MBJ or Stephen Curry.
❤️ BRENDAN "15Grams" MOSCA • 🇦🇺 Sydney, NSW: Brandan is an Australian DJ & music producer who calls Sydney his home & who also goes by the alias "15Grams." He's manned the 1's & 2's at Marquee and Mykonos, and has opened for EDM's biggest names... he even drove a scooter alongside Stephanie Pratt and DJ'ed with Brody Jenner. But a girl is missing from Brandan's DJ life... and the Aussie hopes his bod, his smile and his tattoos will score him his match.
❤️ BROOKE RACHMAN • 🇺🇸 Los Angeles, CA: Brooke comes to us from L.A., where you if glance over at her IG you'll find that she no doubt loves living the good life. She has an ideal job working as a brand marketer traveling near and far, but having the ideal man to accompany her on those flights has been missing. Brooke's preferences are guys who are big, tall, athletic and fun... but she also wants to make sure to keep both an open heart and mind in this midst of this romantic environment.
❤️ CIARA "CC" CORTEZ • 🇺🇸 Los Angeles, CA: A visit to her IG, and it's easy to see why 28-year-old CC is so appealing: she's a lash tech working to perfect those eyelashes, which is why her face looks so nice. She likes seeing herself as "open-minded, honest and blunt," and her ideal man is of the bad boy persona: tall, handsome, tattooed. CC might find plenty of those here, but she also has her eyes on breaking out of that mold into more of the nice man type.
❤️ CLAYTON CAREY • 🇦🇺 Melbourne, VIC: Last year, a man named Clayton was leading man in the land of roses... now another Clay is looking for love -- only, he's from Australia. This one followed in his dad's lead playing rugby league before becoming a gym owner, personal trainer & CrossFit freak. Clay has always been attracted to blondes and blue-eyed girls... but he has his eyes on breaking that pattern, but because there are a few of them in this villa -- habits may be hard to get over.
❤️ COURTNEY ROWE • 🇬🇧 Hertfordshire, England: Courtney is taking a break from her last semester at her university north of London to go for love as one of our five Brits in this cast. As she's a student not much is known about her, but Courtney is unusual in that she has no preferred guy type, instead relying on personality as her magnet -- and her best features are her smile and her eyes. And the three words that describes herself? "Small, funny and a little bit crazy."
❤️ DANIELLE BONAPARTE • 🇺🇸 San Antonio, TX: Last Friday night, she was part of the record crowd that filled the Alamodome to watch the hometown Spurs vs. the Warriors... for Danielle, it was homecoming night as a one-time member of its dance team. Now a local dance teacher, when it comes to love she has her eyes on tall, dark and handsome men who also like to flash those teeth just like she does... but Danielle is also one who likes to go with the flow because to her, people make the difference.
❤️ DEW ANDERSON • 🇪🇸 Tenerife, Spain: Representing the hosts of Europe's first AYTO, Dew works as an assistant in Tenerife and, by the looks of her IG, has done plenty of traveling before this home game. Her preferred guy type is... well like most here, blonde and blue-eyed -- but she is also that picky: if the guy she sees is not that type, then she prefers to swipe elsewhere. And aside from her smile and her eyes, the three words that describe Dew the best? "Bubbly, funny, and genuine."
❤️ EDUARDO DICKSON, JR. • 🇺🇸 New York, NY: Glance over at the header image on his YouTube, and there's a reason why Eduardo likes to have the title "Prince" accompany his name... it's his eyebrows that stand out more than his eyes. Describing himself as "ambitious and funny," the entrepreneur's preferred girl type is one who's fun, vibey and hilarious... but given how there are so many personalities in this villa Eduardo is one who will just settle with what happens here.
❤️ HAMUDI HASOON • 🇳🇿 Wellington, New Zealand: Though Hamudi's home is New Zealand's capital of Wellington, his heart lies in his Middle Eastern roots: the 28-year-old was grew up in Iraq before immigrating down under. This fitness instructor and barbershop owner hasn't had luck in the dating department, but this trip feels like a fresh start to Hamudi... his ideal mate is one who's outgoing, smart, lives life to the fullest, and one just as generous and caring as he is.
❤️ JORDANNE DEVEAUX • 🇺🇸 Miami, FL: Stare at the last :30 of Tory Lanez's "Broke Leg," and you'll find Jordanne in a catfight next to the guy who just got punished for shooting at Nurys' good friend Megan Thaa Stallion. It's her most high-profile gig until AYTO came along... and for this model & bikini designer her love life hasn't been as kind. But for one who's "adventurous, loyal and compassionate," Jordanne comes here open to anything and who wants one who has high aspirations.
❤️ JULIA-RUTH SMITH • 🇳🇿 Auckland, New Zealand: Julia-Ruth is a native New Zealander who calls London home as a professional dancer... but who has endured a lot to earn respect on the dance floor. She knows that she's here because her dating record is not the best, and Julia-Ruth is willing to try anything and switch things up... even if it can take what she calls the "naughty and mischievous" types of those bad boys to get what she wants from her perfect match.
❤️ LEO SVETE • 🇺🇸 Granger, IN: Season 5 saw a Hoosier hoops fan find a girl from LeBron's town... when Hayden & Gianna fell in love, IUPUI grad Leo was playing ball over in Europe. Two years ago, this gentle giant went on that show produced by the aforementioned #30: Holey Moley. But love is a part of Leo's game he'd like to get better at... and besides all those above traits he prefers a girl who shares the same kind of solid work ethic as him. He's already got a big fan club looking forward to this.
❤️ MICHAEL "MIKEY" OWUSU • 🇬🇧 London, England: On Season 3, Amanda found herself in love with a stripper going by the name of a famous film character... now, AYTO has a second guy nicknamed Magic Mike. Mikey from the UK is taking a break from showing off the goodies to try and change up his dating habits and just enjoy this experience -- and hoping his humor and calm demeanor will gain him that support. And already, he has the support of a British Challenge champ who also does this thing too.
❤️ MIJNTJE LUPGENS • 🇳🇱 Rotterdam, Netherlands: Spies, Lies & Allies saw the Netherlands represented in Dutch EOTB alum Renan... now, dancer Mijntje is following in his treks for a second MTV go after being a backup dancer to Jason Derulo and Dua Lipa at the EMA's. This time as she takes the spotlight on an MTV show, love is on her mind -- and like most girls here she eyes a bad boy... but coming here Mijntje's mentality to get to know who everyone is while also having an open mind.
❤️ NATHAN GRANT • 🇬🇧 London, England: Nathan is a British club promoter... but rather than being stuck back home in that cold English weather, you'll likely find him roaming the scorching-hot Dubai club scene, or anywhere where just as warm. Landing that ideal mate has alluded Nathan, and as he strives to get over the stale patterns that's been his hurdle, Nathan's ideal girl is one who's ambitious and energetic yet down to earth... and he'll go all-in to make it all work.
❤️ OLIVER "OLLIE" ANDERSEN • 🇬🇧 London, England: Ollie is an entrepreneur who oversees a London-area lifestyle app, and lately that gig has afforded him to spend time with those from that other global reality dating hit Too Hot to Handle. As far as him is concerned Ollie's love preference has always been for a hot brunette, but he hopes that AYTO will teach this gentle giant with those nice abs how to broaden his horizons and not go for the same type every time.
❤️ ROSALYN "ROZ" ODUJEBE • 🇮🇪 Dublin, Ireland: Roz is an Irish scientist and former pageant queen of Nigerian ancestry... and also happens to be a podcast host. She loves to gab about everything in front a mic, and considering how she describes herself as "loud & boisterous" she won't have a problem spilling the tea -- a few other fellow AYTO alumni knows that feeling. But while Roz's love CV hasn't fared as well as she would've liked, she is also cheeky and caring too.
❤️ SHAMAL "SAMUEL" KHAN - 🇬🇧 Manchester, England: U.S. MTV stans know a guy named Sam as that ginger who broke Juliette's heart... this Samuel here calls Manchester home, but like Hamudi has Middle Eastern roots growing up in Dubai. He's an actor and entertainer who's also pursuing medical studies... but to us, he seems to be a total mystery: somehow MTV's preseason confessional videos did not feature him at all. But before not, we'll get to know this Samuel.
❤️ TAYLOR KELLY • 🇺🇸 Sarasota, FL: Sarasota may be her home, but she doesn't personally know its most famous squad next door in Siesta... but that hasn't deterred real estate agent & beauty addict Taylor from getting her shot chance at love. Her guy type is one who's tall & tattooed, but breaking out of her woes will take for loving the nice ones. But Taylor already has a fan on her side: before Thanksgiving she ran into the one & only Ric Flair... now even wrestlers have an interest in this lovefest.
❤️ WILL GAGNON • 🇺🇸 Los Angeles, CA: While AYTO was taking shape at home, Will served on the frontlines as a Marine and used singing a tune to lighten his mood. Nowadays he's an online fitness coach and personal trainer, and he describes himself as "funny, loving and emotionally available." When it comes to love he says, "My game is good is what I've been told. That's all I'm gonna say." But he has no specific type... and this change to a new house might help him change the bad habits.

Welcome, Newbies!
Two years back while on a weekend's trip to his sister's house, this one spent his late nights binging the aforementioned THTH and saw what it was like for Americans, Brits and those around the world to live under the same roof going for love -- all without hooking up. This time, AYTO is delving into that global playbook but with no Lara placing limits on how they wanna get it on. In fact, if the past is any indication then we will have plenty of moments, potential couples and a whole lot of other things that will add to an already storied history of this show whose flame is rekindled after this enforced hiatus.
Sure, this cast might be different from those who we got to see in those first seven seasons or the Season 8 cast who gave us a deeper look into their journeys as LGBTQ+ people in addition to looking for love. And the one who oversaw this whole thing from behind the fourth wall, co-executive producer of MTV's Paramount+ shows Josh Sandoval, says of this class: "This cast is hilarious, fun, maddening, dramatic, gorgeous, but most of all they are humans. I learned and experienced A LOT doing this show with them. You’re going to enjoy watching them fall in and out and back in love again with each other."
As you get to see how the cast became the newest members of this dysfunctional alumni community when they were first revealed to the world earlier this month on IG, brainstorm these questions we'll ask ourselves: "Who will be the first to hook up?", "Who will christen the Boom Boom Room?", "Will we get our first Love at First Sight truth booth match in Week 1?", "Who from this cast will jump to The Challenge or elsewhere?", or "Will the house go home broke or have money aboard that plane ride?". But most importantly, "Will the Diamonds and Uche & Clinton have company in finding true love in this house and then add a ring to it?"
The answers to these and a whole bunch of others will be revealed in less than forty hours from now when those first two episodes are posted on Paramount+ -- at least if you're here in America. And to Anissa, Aqel, Brendan, Brooke, CC, Clayton, Courtney, Danielle, Dew, Eduardo, Hamudi, Jordanne, Julia-Ruth, Leo, Mikey, Mijntje, Nathan, Ollie, Roz, Samuel, Taylor and Will: welcome to the ride of your lives and enjoy the journey you're about to embark yourselves on. DCBLOG has seen through the entire run of AYTO... and it will be no different as we'll be covering this year's return to the Truth Booth for you here, as we have for the show's first eight seasons. However, we are changing things up in how we're covering both facets of Love, MTV Style on here.
This past week saw the launch of Season 6 of MTV's other romantic reality entry, Ex On The Beach, and the first-ever installment of the global franchise involving those who come into the house as couples instead of what we here in America have been used to in seeing our favorite reality stars go into that dreaded villa. We'll preview that here coming up before it debuts next month, all around the big show of the moment in The Challenge: Ride or Dies... and we'll resume our coverage of that ahead here as those AYTO alumni & fellow challengers get into the nitty gritty of the stretch run towards the final.
With three shows about to air for a time this winter, we've decided to combine coverage of MTV's two romantic shows into what we like to call the MTV Love WRAP. There, we'll single out the week's top moments from Ex & AYTO, dissect the road to the million for the kids in Spain, and of course offer the 'Pulse of top tweets from the episode Twitter buzz. Watch for the inaugural installment of Love WRAP to come your way next weekend... and in addition to episode coverage we also offer original storytelling from this world via the ExtraTime series -- and there's already some nice candidates above.
