MTV Trifecta: Countdown to Ex On The Beach USA

BY DC CUEVA
■ @DC408Dxtr  TW / IG / YT

Five years ago this summer while this site began earning its stripes in its first full season (Challenge Rivals II) covering the MTV beat, a group of seven strangers traveled to the West Coast thinking that they would be filming a typical season of the show that started the history of reality TV as we know it in The Real World. They thought that they were safe... but instead, they got a rude awakening when people who they had dated for some time and then broke up afterwards decided to pop up and ruin their stay in San Francisco, and it became a Summer of Hell in the city that hosted the Summer of Love.
At the same time it was airing in that early winter of 2014, another new MTV series that gained the channel's most-sought after timeslot of after some teenage baby mama drama brought love and money together all the way out in a group of islands known as our 50th State. There were no surprises in their mansion by the Pacific, but with this house there were twenty awesome people and a group dynamic that gelled... and when it was all over one of of its couples eventually become man & wife and parents. And the terms "Truth Booth", "Perfect Match" and "Boom Boom Room" joined the MTV vocabulary.
On both series, we saw makeups, breakups, heartbreak, and a whole lot of drama which made for the kind of compelling TV only MTV can offer. And what happened on both Real World Ex-Plosion and Season 1 of Are You The One? provides the historical backdrop and context for the latest chapter in MTV's reality story, and a new show that promises to bring the spirit of what happened in the Bay Area and Hawaii to one that will once again refine romantic reality television – perhaps even change the game too. And coincidentally enough, members from both those seasons will be present when the book on this always eye-grabbing subgenre will again be rewritten in a unique and totally twisted way, starting in one week from tonight.

This new series is Ex on the Beach, a show first conceived by MTV International and debuted on the youth entertainment brand's overseas channels shortly after the season finales of both aforementioned shows in the U.S. in spring 2014.  Four competitors on The Challenge Vendettas know exactly what it's like to sit on the beach and then sit through the punishing sight of seeing the one person they had gotten away from them reemerge in paradise. Now, American viewers are about to see what they and those outside our shores have witnessed the last few years, and will now get to see for themselves the kind of wild drama when exes come ashore to wreck havoc on their Hawaiian vacation. And those familiar to MTV viewers and the entire reality TV spectrum will be in for a treat as they get to endure all of this exes drama just after the drama taking place down in South Beach.
EOTB will be the milestone twenty-fifth MTV Trifecta season that we have dedicated full blog coverage to on here, and as the major series of this spring we'll be dedicating the bulk of time and resources to this new U.S. incarnation, with multiple posts covering the show each week. And in the first of this two-part preseason preview, we'll offer you a look at what this new show is all about, who has been chosen to go through this new ringer, and much more as we look ahead to this overseas sensation taking its talents to the States. And this is just the tip of the iceberg: we'll also take a page from our Challenge coverage to offer an introduction to those who are new to the MTV family but are those who no stranger to the reality TV spectrum – including several who have had experienced the love before on the granddaddy of all romantic reality shows.
So, strap in, get that tablet ready and Join In with us after the jump as DCBLOG kicks off the Countdown to Ex on the Beach U.S.  Dive in…

 WHAT TO EXPECT

Last Thanksgiving after the longest Challenge season ever, Dirty 30 ended, this site discussed the rumors surrounding an American adaptation of Ex on the Beach, and after some R&R including a few coming together to ring in the new year before Vendettas premiered, now the time has come for it to finally make its way to our shores.
The show first aired on MTV UK in April 2014 after the finales of AYTO Season 1 and RW Ex-Plosion aired here, and is currently airing its eighth season (or "series" as it's referred to across the pond) on British TV and in many other countries outside the States. For years, MTV's overseas cousins adopting U.S. formats such as Jersey Shore and tailoring them to their local markets and languages... the same way CBS adopted European formats Survivor and Big Brother in 2000 and turned them two of its staple reality series. For here, Ex on the Beach USA marks the first time that an original MTV International concept that originated outside America has been brought over to the world's largest media market and to the largest MTV channel of all.
For the countless thousands of fans who visit us from outside the U.S. for our posts covering the original U.S. version of Are You The One?, and those who got to see Floribama Shore in the lead up to Jersey Shore Family Vacation, then you know what Ex on the Beach is all about. But for those of you Americans who are curious of what this new love experiment is, for a simple primer it will channel what one of these singles who will be moving into this Hawaiian paradise had before, but something he wouldn't be surprised to expect.
For what happened to Cory on his Real World stay, he will be in the same spot he and those who went to San Francisco were in when that show's format was changed to accommodate that exes twist. Just as he had going to the Bay for what he thought was a regular seven strangers excursion, here at first glance he and those chosen will come here -- including other reality TV vets -- under the assumption that they're in Hawaii for a vacation and a run-of-the-mill dating show taking place in paradise like those we've had for what seems forever. And like what we are all used to, there are ready to party, to hook up, enjoy the sun and everything Hawaii has to offer.
But along with that, they get something else: they'll be for the total shock of their lives when their exes will come face to face with them on the beach. And the complicated web of love, revenge, hookups and deceit, as well as the trademark MTV reality drama we've grown to love, will unfold in the kind of sexy backdrop of Hawaii as a man who we last saw become friends with a ginger will take over the seat as host of this new take on reality romance, as the question they will be left asking will be, "Whose Ex is Next?"

There is a notable difference between what Cory had to put up with then and what he will have to get through now all over again: instead of allowing for plenty of time for the incumbent cast of originals to get settled in, exes will be coming to paradise on a regular, weekly basis and almost from the outset. But like when Tony had to see two of his exes invade Chicago on Real World Skeletons as he fell in love with the blonde girl who he shares custody of the first of his two kids, the exes on EOTB will arrive on a weekly, per-case basis rather than in one shot like what happened in the Bay Area, or the always entertaining visit from the exes to the AYTO house.
Every few days, a few of the houseguests will walk over to the Beach of Doom, where not only do get a chance to get some tan and build those beach bods on the sand, they will have to endure the horror or the shock of what awaits them. There, one, or in some cases -- a few, of their exes make their way from the Pacific Ocean and onto the beach as if they're the sharks from Jaws... but maybe someone might get the shaft. The reactions of what they will be going through in cringing a bit will be one you will not want to miss, and will no doubt set the tone for each episode.
Every AYTO season has a Truth Booth and a Matchup Ceremony where the hopes of those in love and dreams of $1 million always lives and dies in lasers and light beams. Ask one of the exes slated to make their visit to Hawaii soon about how much of a bitch the former can be, or a few from the same cast of how excruciating the ladder is from when they made the wrong kind of history last year, and they'll tell you that what they went through on their MTV debut will be different. And like what they had there, there is an object of theirs and everyone's affection each week.
Here on EOTB, that takes a cue from what Cody, Alex and the cast of Stranded with a Million Dollars in Fiji had last year: a tablet. This is the Tablet of Terror: a device that will send the singles on those getaway dates with either their ex or someone else that they rather prefer not to go on a date with. But in addition, the Tablet will also give the group some big twists, from forcing pairs to fend for themselves sleeping outside in cooler conditions, leaking pictures of their dates to the house, or even give someone the dibs to eliminate someone or even themselves.
Unlike most other high-stakes series, there is not a competition series with no money or prize at stake - and an ex will be happy about that prospect after he's been through in his first three MTV shows. But at stake here is something just as good as cash: a chance to perhaps reignite old flames, or see that flame of romance go out permanently, all amidst the sultry backdrop only the islands of our fiftieth state of the union can offer.

As for where this drama will be taking place, it is the Big Island of Hawaii that will serve as host of the first U.S. version of EOTB, following in the steps of Spain, Cancun, Portugal, Thailand, Greece and Bali that have hosted the eight series of the original UK series. And the place they're staying at is perhaps the most phattest house we have ever had for an MTV Trifecta series and one that will make Alex from Siesta Key look at his Florida mansion as just another house. Ironically enough, Justin Bieber and his entourage reportedly rented this exclusive private estate located by a local golf course for a time in summer 2016 which will now welcome those in love to paradise.
Known to locals as the "Water Falling Estate," this 8-acre, 8,100 sq. ft. property by the ocean has two waterfalls located next to it on a cliff-side overlooking the ocean. It's a four-level estate with its own private helicopter pad, a rooftop basketball/tennis court and a mini Olympic-style aquatic center with its own swimming pool, diving platforms and a water slide, and the usual outdoor amenities of a wet bar and outdoor dining areas. Inside the house, you'll find 5 bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, a round elevator, plenty of windows, and one bedroom whose windows can be opened into the open air. And the price tag on this mansion is easily into the eight figures: $26.5 million on the auction block.
And the person who is hosting Ex on the Beach and accompanying the role occupied by his AYTO brethren Ryan Devlin, Terrence J. and Queer Eye's Karamo Brown, is someone who we last saw just a few short months ago. Romeo Miller was on The Challenge: Champs vs. Stars last winter and after playing some ping pong immediately became BFF's with the ultimate Challenge manipulator Wes he has been given this assignment to emcee the proceedings in Hawaii. We first saw him as that rapper's son who topped the charts at age 10 in the shadow of Master P., and who has branched out a bit over the years. From going to USC and playing hoops for the Trojans, to acting in films and TV including his role as Pablo Money on Famous in Love on Freeform (formerly the ABC Family Channel).

 MEET THE SINGLES
Names linked to their Twitter bios

To those who watch AYTOReal World and/or The Challenge -- the three shows we call the Trifecta and have blogged on each of them extensively the past five years, several of those who will sail their way to Hawaii are familiar to MTV viewers: one went through this feeling of an ex arriving in from out of left field and recently made news before his most recent show, while a few others know exactly how much of a bitch lasers or beams can be under the bright lights. And they'll be joined by those who have been on the granddaddy of all romantic reality shows, a summer staple that invaded Spain, other reality TV veterans and everyday romantics who come here for the latest social experiment.

CORY (The Challenge/Real World Ex-Plosion): Everyone who has watched MTV the past few years knows the story of Cory: someone who has been the resident ladies man in every house he has entered spanning a Real World Ex-Plosion season with overtones of this very show, and his six times on The Challenge. Those know about his ego, his showmances and a checkered record on the fifth major pro sport, but now that those who doesn't even know about MTV reality TV know that he is now a new daddy, things have changed quite a bit. The lifestyle of being that bachelor has been changed around quite considerably to trying to focus on finding the one who can support him and his daughter back home, and given what has just happened to him recently, his challenge is to learn from his mistakes and enter with a new outlook. That also includes possibly seeing one of his exes again.

TAYLOR (Are You The One? Season 5): Last year, those who watched Are You The One? Season 5 were drawn to that sweetheart from the Seattle area, Taylor. She was part of the cast that infamously lost the money with the rest of her cast, but like a few others who came to the Caribbean she thought she had found true love… that was until that relationship fell apart, as did one she had before she went on that show. Tay has come to Hawaii with the hope that she will finally find that guy who won't screw her over. But she has no idea that her past will come back to haunt her yet again, perhaps it could be two people we might be familiar with.

ANGELA (Bad Girls Club): First, there's Angela from Bad Girls Club, and Season 15 that brought pairs of sisters under one roof. Her bio describes her being more "more Jersey than Jersey," and is someone who always wear both her heart and temper on sleeve. She can proudly boast, "My hair is fake, my nose is fake, and my boobs are fake. But everything hat comes out of my mouth is 100% real!"  Angela has not had as much luck in the dating pool, having dealt with a fair share of cheaters and getting her heart broken in the process, and is anxious to get to move on and get a fresh start. But in the usual BGC fashion, expect this ticking time bomb to go off if her Ex decides to crash the bash.

CHASE (The Bachelorette Season 12): Season 12 of The Bachelorette two years ago saw JoJo Fletcher deal with a semifinal three of an NFL MVP's younger brother, a college friend of one of this season's exes and a medical sales rep turned All-American hunk. But Chase McNary had his chance at scoring the Dallas real estate developer and had his heart broken in the penultimate week when Jordan Rodgers and Robby Hayes were picked over him for the final two. Since then, he's done a 180 and is embracing the lifestyle of love 'em & leave 'em, which has seen women chasing after him, quite simply. At day's end, the life of him being single is something that is seeing little progress, which is why he's come to Hawaii to look for the one to bring home to mom in Colorado. His goal: look for the dream girl even as his Ex may reemerge in paradise.

FAITH (Vanderpump Rules): For avid reality TV fans who also "Watch What Happens" on Bravo, chances are they watch Vanderpump Rules, and one of those who work under the wing of an alum of The Real Housewives is Faith Stowers. She was that military veteran and hopeless romantic who found herself in some big time drama when she let Jax Taylor cheat on his longtime girlfriend by hooking up with Faith. That episode is only part of a checkered dating record where her heart has been broken many times, either by long distance or landing a bad boy. That history has her anxious to start anew and to try and find that new love that will forget the past ... but that may come crashing down when a part of that past resurfaces in Hawaii.

JASMINE (The Bachelor Season 21): For a Bay Area native who has been a cheerleader in both the NBA and NFL, it was in Bachelor Nation that Jasmine Goode made a name for herself. Two times last year did she go onto shows of the King of romantic reality TV — Season 21 of The Bachelor with Nick Viall and Season 4 of Bachelor in Paradise — and both times came away empty handed, despite her being crowned Queen of Paradise on the ladder just last summer. However, things have not turned out so well for her outside the perimeters of TV land in the love game, including dating potential models that did not work out as well as she hoped. With this, her third show, she hopes third times the charm to land that Prince Charming… but of course, the prospect of an Ex may rain on this parade.

PAUL (Big Brother 18): On the same Big Brother 18 season that gave us Natalie and Victor who then proceeded to cross into The Challenge, that season also gave us Paulie, one of the two siblings of former houseguests who joined them, Champs vs. Stars' Jozea Flores and four 2nd-time castmates in the 2016 summer paradise, and where he became a power player there and made it to Week 8. Despite his status as a Big Brother alum, his love life hasn't been too kind to Paulie, and there are a lot of exes that he has had, and a lot of them are anxious to get a chance to find either closure or revenge on this smooth talker from Jersey. Which of those will have the chance? Time will sure tell who will be that Ex who'll give him a chance to face the music.

CHRIS (aka "Creatures Ferris"): For the three everyday daters joining the reality alums here, Chris -- aka Creatures Ferris shares the same occupation as Melissa of EOTB UK and Vendettas: he's an international house DJ who just turned legal age and is ready to take the next step to star status. He's also a ladies man who likes to be the life of the party and, as MTV says, "who boils everything down to whether it's Gucci or Not Gucci." He likes to be the resident goofball, but at heart Chris is that hopeless romantic who's fallen in love a few times, and in every instance he has had his heart broken. But with the prospect of an Ex arriving, will he handle what Hawaii will give him?

TOR’I (Model & Former Athlete): Like Cory. Tor’i comes to us from Michigan as a fitness model, a former athlete and someone who loves to dunk... perhaps if not for this show we would've seen throw it down in the Slam Dunk contest. The man they call "Bionic Brooks" is the ultimate catch: killer smile, hot abs and a lot of charm that makes him a ladies man. Tor’i was locked down to his high school sweetheart until he went off to college and wanted that freedom of checking out the college dating scene. Tor’i again comes here to let loose and meet beautiful ladies in the islands, but will one or a few Exes come here to slay his chances at landing new love?

VICTORIA (Fashion Influencer): Lastly, there's fashion influencer Victoria who boasts plenty of personality despite her small package, and whose perfect matches are Dior, Fendi & Gucci. For this law student-turned-stylist from the Jersey shore, she's had a fair share of summer flings right by the boardwalk and inside the clubs... one of them even became a serious relationship until that came crashing down by way of bad choices. Once those house lights come up, she is desperate to look for a guy she can call her own. The question for Victoria is to look to see if the man she's looking for is in Hawaii, or if a piece of home will fly all the way here and ruin it all.

 MEET THE EXES
Names linked to their Twitter/Instagram accounts

And here is the list of the Exes who will eventually invade the Big Island and make the lives of these singles a time to either relive lost love or turn things upside down. We have an idea of a few of these combinations from having watched it before, but for the sake of those who want to keep it all secret, we won't reveal the exact ones.

ALICIA (Are You The One? S5, Second Chances & The Challenge)
ANDRE (Are You The One? S5)
CAMERON (Are You The One? S4 & Second Chances)
DERRICK (Are You The One? S5, Second Chances & The Challenge)
JOE (Are You The One? S6)
SHANLEY (Are You The One? S1 & Second Chances)
 CHELSKO (Musician)
 HALEY (Adventure Enthusiast)
 JUNE (Actor & Model)
 LEXI (Model)
 LUIS (Personal Trainer)
 MARCO (Actor & Model)
 MARCUS (Model)
 SKYLER (Model)

And here's one more interesting fact about the cast that you probably won't find anywhere else but here: Cory isn't the only link between this show and the one that begat this whole MTV reality story. The firm who casted this inaugural class of Ex On The Beach USA is Cornwell Casting, which bears the surname of one of those who was on the same Real World Boston season that saw Syrus Yarborough became a ladies man before becoming a Spring Break staple and MTV ambassador, and where Sean Duffy first came to prominence before he became a congressman and husband to fellow Real World alum Rachel Campos.
Jason Cornwell was one of those who also took up residency in the firehouse that hosted the sixth season of Real World in 1997, and two years later took part in the first installment of what was then known as The Real World/Road Rules Challenge. After that season -- one that was modeled more on the ladder than the high-stakes competition series it is now, Bunim-Murray Productions invited him to step behind the camera and work behind the scenes in the casting department. He helped cast twelve seasons of MTV's two reality pioneers, and that vaulted him into a prominent position in the reality casting profession, casting more than 300 shows across many networks including even casting one of this channel's biggest hits, The Hills with Lauren Conrad & friends.
He and his team held a hand in helping to cast this group of ten singles and a larger group of exes who are now bringing this staple of overseas television into one that will sure become a hit, one that will now gain an ever coveted spot: following Jersey Shore Family Vacation starting next week. It's a show that one of the exes is already calling it an even worse experience than the show they first made waves on... but with all of the drama, the love and everything we come to expect from reality TV, it's only a matter of time before this becomes THE next big thing on MTV. As they say, bring it on.
