DC WRAP: Rivals III Episode 11 and AYTO4 Episode 4

BY DC CUEVA
@DC408Dxtr / @DC408DxNow

As you begin your week, we begin ours with the WRAP covering last week in the Trifecta, all ahead of beginning this cycle again tonight. In case you missed it, we saw a gigantic upset in a double elimination last week on Rivals III that saw some clarity on the game as we reach five teams left. And over in Hawaii, Are You The One? saw a good old love triangle emerge, along with a couple deciding to call it quits.
Coming up, a somewhat limited WRAP as we'll have an expanded edition of our episode recap (for reasons we'll explain there), plus the Winners' List and DC ExtraTime with more on one of the key figures of the episode. Join us next.

 THINGS TO KNOW
As policy dictates here, we begin our recap by looking back at the previous week's Challenge episode as that ended without an elimination taking place and again, it's moved to this Wrap post. It is the reason why I did, in lieu of a full Wrap post last week, my retrospective on the first Rivals Challenge.

RIVALS III - EPISODE 10
ALLIANCES EXPOSED: As EP 10 begins, alliances are being questioned as Christina gets upset about Nate not understanding her, and him spending more time with love interest Nicole. Across the club, Nany reveals a deal she & Wes made with Cory, coming after the getaway trip he & Ashley went on with Johnny & Vince the previous week. Nicole isn't aware of this secret alliance but begins to question her cousin's alliance in her believing Cory is making side deals and not being as trustworthy as he appears to be. Not being aware of the drama going on around him, Cory admits to feeling good about dealing both ways, as Ash believes he's confused about alliances and who he wants to align himself to.
BURIED ALIVE: TJ Lavin arrives at the house to call a snap meeting but then takes the women out of the house, leaving the guys to speculate their whereabouts. The guys use this time to strategize how to get Johnny and Vince out before the finals, with Devin suggesting they put them in every jungle when they get a chance but Cory tells him to level off until the right time. But Dario tells them it's too late to make this move.
The guys arrive at their next mission - Take It To The Grave, where they find out that the girls not only have not returned, but have been buried alive underground and have to dig them out. Ahead of them being put underground, the girls were asked a slew of trivia questions about themselves covering just about every aspect of themselves. Their partners must correctly answer those questions in what is essentially this season's trivia challenge, and the first to answer a fixed number of them will get a chance to get their partners out of the coffin. Dario and Bananas are the first to get to that magic number of questions right and though being given the same time to dig their partners out, it's the former that beats Johnny to the bell and Dario & Nicole win safety. As all the other guys get to save their girls, Nate struggles with answering his questions, and even tosses his clipboard on the ground in disgust and when he gets her, he blames Christina for them finishing last.
BLINDSIDE MOVE: When deliberations take place, Nicole has difficulty deciding who she & Dario should nominate, but then tells him about Nany & Wes' alliance with Cory & Ashley though she was told to keep it under wraps. When he talks to Wes about it, Wes refuses to having an alliance with Cory, and he adds to stick with their plan to put Johnny or Vince in. At the dinner, the power team inform Bananas & Sarah of Cory's alliances, and Johnny says the alliance with Cory has been nixed, and Nic that them aligning with them could hurt Nany's game. When Cory & Ashley come over, Nicole asks Cory about his alliances, and he still favors JB & Vince, but suggests to Dario to keep doing that planned power move on the champ & his cousin.
When it comes to the nominations, Dario & Nicole decide to throw a curveball and vote in Cory & Ashley and Devin & Cheyenne, breaking up the alliance with the ladder and one D had with Cory going back to last season. When TJ asks him why they came up with their choice, Dario says he was informed of Cory's deal with Nany & Wes, and ginger calls this "a dumbest move." Meanwhile, Nany & Nicole get themselves into words, as the former says she doesn't want to expect anything from anyone anymore. She is left in tears as she feels her cousin doesn't care about her anymore. This sets up a huge elimination battle that we'll explain here in just a little bit.

AYTO S4 - EPISODE 4
GIO & KAY - NOT THE ONES?: To AYTO Episode 4, where after their good fortunes continue in their 3rd matchup following the first Truth Booth match, Tori gets a pie in her face as the group is in an upbeat mood. But things quickly turn to Giovanni & Kaylen, where she brings him aside to share her concerns about him. She doesn't like the way he flirts or shows interests in other girls, especially after they expressed their love for one another back in Week 2. Nonetheless, Gio takes Kah to the Boom Boom Room to prove how special he thinks she is, but her emotions about him are still kept to herself.
Later, Kay goes after Gio for how he's now been keeping his distance from her. He says their he needs to get some space and want to explore other options. She feels devastated by this but lets out hope that the stormy seas he's going through will subside and that he'll return to her. And it's at the nominations that after all the doubts that came about, Gio announces that he & Kay are done, much to everyone's shock.
TORI & ASAF, AND FRANCESCA: Previously, we saw Tori & Asaf hook up, and in Week 4 we see them take their flirtation take the next step into a more established relationship with hope they could be a match. After the challenge, Tori shows confidence that they go into the Truth Booth and will move into the Suites. On the other side of the coin, Francesca feels sad, but still has feelings for the dancer and wants to be with him. When there's drinks aplenty in the house, things can happen - and it does: drinking and flirting leads Asaf and Francesca into Poundtown and they hook up... all as Tori searches the house for him with no idea that he's cheating on her.
This secret night in the BBR and trying to keep it inside becomes too much for Asaf to handle as he comes clean to Tori. There on their date, he fesses up to her and admits to sleeping with Francesca the night before...it's no surprise that Tori is furious about this. Her attention turns to hoping that they're not a match, and even sees one of the girls on the date yell at Asaf as well. Tori's emotions bring her back to the house where she is left in tears as she spills the beans about Asaf's actions.
HYGIENE & MATCHES: For the week's challenge, the girls dive into toilet water to pull out names, swim back to place their names next to quotes about the guys' personal hygiene; the girl with the most correct in less time wins, plus becomes matchmaker. Emma takes the win, with Julia and Tori joining her on the podium; and Emma chooses Stephen, Morgan and Asaf as their dates, respectively, as they head off to an underwater volcano. At nominations, the tension is razor sharp when the group is asked by Ryan Devlin about their current feelings. For the ladder above, Tori calls Francesca out for their night in the BBR and still shows hope she's not his match, where as Fran doesn't regret the hookup but does regret how this was handled. The group sends Tori & Asaf in to settle the score, and Tori is relieved by the NO Match message. In addition to breaking up with Kay, Gio feels Julia is his match, while on the side Julia's connection with Stephen is growing much to Gio's displeasure.
At the Matchup, the guys take control as the mood on the patio is still the same as what happened in the living room as Tori remains up in arms with Asaf, while Kay is now waving the white flag after being rejected by Gio. And even when he sticks with her in choosing her for the sake of the game, it's more of a game move than a love move. In the end, the group still rides the ship with four beams - no change from the previous one, so they can be lucky that they didn't black out or lose a beam, and it's a good thing in this mid-stage.

RIVALS III - EPISODE 11
JUNGLE UPSET: Back now to Mexico, and there was a reason why Episode 10 ended without a resolution: we know anything can happen in The Challenge and in the Trifecta, and last week...no exception. Dominant Cory & Ashley and Devin & Cheyenne join the Jungle along with last placers Nate & Christina. And after the girls pick white and all of what happened to him with the alliances he formed in the house, Cory draws the black skull as Big D & Chey get lucky once again.
For Nate & Christina, they won a mission earlier in the season but came in as the team likely to be sent to the final and suffer, while Cory & Ash also won a challenge earlier on and he hadn't been into an elimination until this week. The beauty of competition shows like this is anyone can win, and the jungle game sees one player spin around a circle while the other is hanging on a zip line trying to get to the end of the line. This game was tense that on paper, the one guy in this had finals experience and was made for this Challenge world and it seemed to be a cakewalk for him & Ash. But in a time that's seen many an upset take place in competition the past year or so, Nate & Christina sweep away the best-of-3 matchup and taking out the contenders. TJ echoes our sentiment in this being one of the biggest upsets ever, while Dario is called a coward by Devin for initiating this mess in the first place.
CATCH & RELEASE: The week's mission is "Catch & Release" - the same title of one of the missions from the first Rivals, and sees players jumping onto a swinging punching bag above water and leaping off while grabbing flags. As this game rolls along, we see Bananas & Sarah win once again in likely taking this game by the throat, while Wes & Nany place second. But it's the performance of some of the other teams that catch more attention: Vince brought us a flashback to what he did last season in him flubbing up, while the teams with AYTO alumni - Devin & Cheyenne, Dario & Nicole and Nate & Christina - all come up empty in the flags department and get scoulded by TJ Lavin afterwards...the ladder are put in for doing this in less time though many feel that all three should've gone in automatically.
SOMETHING TO PROVE: Before the mission, Sarah and Wes (who outside this house are friends and spoke to each other on her podcast before this season began) have a chat about where the game stands, but this turns into a talk of him not having a physical game as he used to have due to being an entrepreneur, while she gets called out for being on Bananas' side. So, it's no surprise that when JB & Sarah at nominations begin to speak of who goes in, Wes begins to walk up before they could say his name; same goes for Devin & Cheyenne as well.
At the Jungle, once again Team Princess turn up white skulls and all talk of us is of how are these two people getting so lucky? It's the fourth time that they've been put into elimination and the fourth straight time that they are safe. In the end, it's Wes & Nany that go into the jungle, and for Nicole it's something that she can't show her rooting interest for: she's been fighting her cousin for the backstab by Dario for switching sides, while Nate is her love interest. The game is Shattered Dreams, where a hanging giant beam breaks glasses up a wall by the guys while the girls crank them up the wall...team who breaks all the windows first wins. It's no surprise that Wes & Nany's strength over Nate & Christina prevails and they win it handily.
Afterwards, TJ announces that this is the next to last week in Mexico as at the end of the next week's activities, the four teams that make it out will head to Argentina for one last mission and jungle before the final. We'll look at where this game stands on the Strategy Room on Wednesday.

WINNERS LIST
TORI and KAYLEN: It was obviously tough to be in the position these two ladies were in back on Monday, and they handled it greatly in how they handled Asaf's cheating and Gio deciding to go another direction.
RIVALS III: And my winners for Rivals are: BANANAS & SARAH (power team), WES & NANY (2nd elimination winners), and NATE & CHRISTINA (1st elimination winners and taking out a contender in the process).

TRAGEDY IN MICHIGAN: NATE REMEMBERS
Understandably, it's been a sad summer as far as gun violence has been concerned - and yesterday for the second time in a week Tony's hometown of Baton Rogue was the scene of tragedy where three policemen were killed in the line of duty, just under a week after one of the many racial protests took place in the wake of tension in this country.
And one of the most recent shootings in this country has also had a direct effect on a member of this Rivals III cast. After the events that took place in Minneapolis and Dallas last week in addition to the Louisiana state capital, last Monday a shooting rampage that garnered national attention took place at the Berrien County Courthouse in St. Joseph, Michigan in the state's southwestern quarter, just north of the MI/Indiana state border far away from Detroit.
An inmate at Berrien County Prison, Larry Darnell Gordon, was handcuffed by sheriffs deputies and was on his way to the courthouse for a hearing. But when he attempted to escape, Gordon went at it with them on the third floor of the non-accessible courthouse and eventually, he gunned down two bailiffs, injured a woman and took hostages temporarily. But when the shooter tried to run through a door and escape, two other bailiffs caught him red-handed and shot & killed him inside a hallway.
As someone who comes from that part of the state and grew up in Kalamazoo - an hour east of St. Joseph - and who attended high school in the same county where the shootings took place, Nate was no doubt affected by the tragic shootings in his home state although he was more than 2,000 miles away living with Briana in San Diego. This was his tweet just hours after the shooting...
The two victims of the shootings were 61-year-old courthouse security director Joseph Zangaro and 63-year-old Army veteran Ron Kienzle, both 10-year veterans of the Berrien Country Sheriff's Department. Nate's father had worked with one of the victims in the same department for many years, and understandably an entire community whose total population of the entire county numbers at over 150,000 where Nate calls home, have been heartbroken by this latest tragedy that's again put gun control at the very center in this country, and just before the tragic events days later in France.
This tragedy has hit him and the Siebenmark family very hard in someone his dad worked with being one of the latest victims of yet another senseless act of violence. And considering what we saw last week with Nate, this story has truly hit home - both personally and emotionally... not everything this past week has been about celebrating a massive elimination upset this week or enduring all the social media hate he's received this season. But whenever an event like happens close to home for those who either live in that city or is a native of a region but now lives far away as Nate is, the impact feels greater, whether you do or don't know those directly or indirectly affected by it.
Of course, our thoughts are with all of those affected by not only the tragic events in Michigan but all the other cities who have been in the news for all the wrong reasons since the events in Orlando a month ago.

CARA, JAMIE & BRANDON'S TAHOE TAKEOVER
If you're one who loves animals and cares more about their welfare, then it's likely that you support a humane society and/or are a member of a local SPCA organization in your community. Last weekend, the current reigning Challenge champions and a fellow member of her Challenge alumni class cast took their talents to one of the world's most beautiful settings for a weekend to help a good cause.
The duo who won Battle of the Bloodlines last season, Cara Maria & Jamie, spent last weekend in Lake Tahoe on the Nevada/California state border for a celebrity weekend and scavenger dash put on by the Lake Tahoe Humane Society and SPCA. Joining the New England cousins was a member of Cara's Fresh Meat II cast of six years ago, BrandonShe tweeted her appreciation for her fellow veteran who started this ride in Vancouver back in 2010: "@BrandonDNelson has had my heart from moment i met him. Realest dude on and off camera. All love." It speaks to how Brandon is well respected by Challengers, friends and those in his present home base of Las Vegas.
In case you haven't kept up with how Cara has been doing since overcoming all the obstacles she had to endure to win in Berlin, some calmness has returned after everything that transpired on Bloodlines. She's returned to the serenity of her Montana surroundings and to the world of being a kickboxing instructor and riding her horses in that peaceful environment far away from the big cities. But Cara hasn't shied away from fueling that competitive fire as she and Jamie have taken part in several Spartan Race events in Big Sky Country - something that my brother in law took part in this past week. As she tweeted earlier on this season, the enormous stress of having won last season prevented her from being paired with Bananas this season and decided to take a break this time.
The appeal of her being a huge animal lover has given Cara Maria reason to come down to Tahoe the past couple years to translate that passion for our furry friends to help a worthy cause. Her, Jamie and Brandon came together to take part in this charity event and, in typical Challenge fashion, the weekend saw the trio don their Challenge jerseys and go on a scavenger hunt on the streets of Lake Tahoe on foot and bike to search for odds and ends, do challenges (!) and all else, all while exploring this scenic part of our country which I got to spend Spring Break in 20 years ago. Knowing that any Challenge final also includes going paddling, the trio also had a chance to go kayaking in the lake, which was the first time that Brandon had done this activity. They joined with many others who raced with and against them and also supported efforts to stop animal cruelty, and also got to enjoy our furry friends and raised money to help animals in need.

FAREWELL TO SPREECAST
Finally, this past week saw the end of an era as far as internet communication and interaction is concerned in this small world of ours. On Thursday, the social video chat site SpreeCast shut down after five years of service and making a solid impact on how people get to talk with one another on the things we're passionate about. For those who follow the Trifecta and for some of my fellow MTV Insiders, this was a very bittersweet moment.
For the person who I affectionally call without hesitation the best in the business, fellow MTV Insider Andrew Kirk did many interviews and episode discussions during his time on the site. Of the seventy people from the Trifecta ecosystem that he's talked to in his nearly five years doing these shows, a good number of those took place on SpreeCast: from talking to some of the Real World casts, to chats during two Challenges, to the first Are You The One? season. It's the ladder that's responsible for his biggest audience, when he snared the exclusive first chat with Shanley after the fight with Simone after she & Chris T. were separated in the house. And on my advice before the site was shut down, Andrew uploaded some of his most notable interviews from his SC era, and in the links below we have that link.
For us, SpreeCast helped to set the pace for how we get to cover this Trifecta world in that we were now able to not only to talk to the castmates in asking them questions, but see their faces as well too. That has translated to the Google+ Hangout platform, along with the usual audio-only podcasts that have allowed people like Andrew to hone their craft and better cover the shows we love. SpreeCast will be sorely missed but we have them to thank for the legacy it leaves behind.

And that is all for the Week 10 edition of DC WRAP. As you prepare for tonight's proceedings in Hawaii, this past week afforded the opportunity for some discussion for fellow webcasters, and here's where you can find them...
● Check out those aforementioned SpreeCast interviews by Andrew Kirk (@CSUGradAKirk) on his YouTube channel, which has added other chats from during his Real World and Challenge coverage a couple years ago which are too many to mention. Check out that and all his MTV coverage there, on Blog Talk Radio, and Reality Radio Podcast (@RealityRadioPod) where they are covering not just the Trifecta but also Big Brother as well.
● For the first-hand look at this Challenge, check out the Back to Reality series with Sarah and Susie on their YouTube channel. This week, they will be joined by KellyAnne as they will discuss where this game stands as we head into the late stages, plus their usual live Q&A. Check out all their videos there, plus The Brain Candy Podcast at TheBrainCandyPodcast.com with their look at the world at large, which this week sees them discuss books, of all things.
● As always, check out the MTV RHAP with Brian Cohen (@BusDriversRoute) & Ali Lasher (@LashsTweets) with a doubleheader for this past week. First, the duo discussed the past two EP's of Are You The One? (as they're doing it in alternating weeks), then with Ali being away in California for vacation (I actually chatted to her on Periscope the other night in fact), friend Dain Massey (@dainerson25) joined Brian to discuss Rivals III. Check out both of those and past shows at robhasawebsite.com and YouTube.
● There's AfterBuzz TV and their recaps of The Challenge and Are You The One?, which you can check out at afterbuzztv.com. Last week, Kay and John joined in to discuss the events of Episode 4, and also check out discussions on Game of Thrones with AYTO alum Ryan Malaty, and castmate Ashleigh Feaster with Beauty and the Beast.

As we wrap up, want to say thanks to Challenge veterans Adam and Tyler for the kind words they gave me on the ExtraTime retrospective on the first Rivals Challenge that I did here last week, which you can check out here. It's the positive feedback I get from people like you on the posts I do that allow me to keep on doing what I do best, and as always thanks for your support. We won't rest on our laurels until this cycle ends as, of course, we'll be speeding on through with the exceptional posts we offer, and we'll have this week's episodes covered for you here this weekend along with other things planned as summer rolls along. As always, spread the word by sharing these links on your social networks so that your fellow fans can access this site's great coverage.
With the usual reminder to follow it for live tweets of the Trifecta starting later tonight, DCNOW @DC408DxNow is my live twitter handle that will be offering daily live tweets of the upcoming Rio Olympics starting in less than three weeks, spanning the entire competition day - and only taking breaks there for Are You The One? and Hard Knocks: Los Angeles Rams coming in August. We'll also be devoting extensive blog coverage to the Games with regular posts during the fortnight, and our first posts covering the Movement and the Torch Relay will be up here soon. And as always, give me a follow at @DC408Dxtr on Twitter, Instagram, and SnapChat.
Thank you for reading and until we talk to you here in a few days, enjoy your week ahead and see you then.
