DC WRAP: Rivals III Episode 12 and AYTO4 Episode 5

BY DC CUEVA
@DC408Dxtr / @DC408DxNow

As you begin this last week of July, welcome once again to DCBLOG and to DC WRAP as we look back on last week on the MTV Trifecta ecosystem, before we head into the second half of Are You The One? Season 4 tonight and the Argentina portion of Rivals III in a couple nights from now. Last week, we saw Jenna's relationship with Zach being put into focus, while the field for the final four was determined by Bananas & Sarah winning again, and Wes & Nany losing the last Jungle before that trip down south. And over in Hawaii, we saw the end of Giovanni & Kaylen as he began to get close to other girls in the AYTO house, while Cam got hung over and Nicole get rejected.
Coming up, the key moments from last week in the Trifecta, plus fantasy scoring and the winners list. And we have a triple dose of ExtraTime as we'll share you the musical side of the man they call the Wolf, hip-hop connections between two of this summer's castmates, and a fan favorite takes over the Big Apple. All that and more is next.

 THINGS TO KNOW

JENNA & ZACH: First off, before the matter turns to business the attention is on Jenna opening up about her relationship with Challenge vet Zach, which we featured all the way back in our catch-up that began our Trifecta coverage last August. While she's been in the house in Mexico, it's only this late in the game that Jenna finally gets through to Thor after many attempts to get in contact, only for him not to recognize her NY accent. When he finally gets her call, she asks him if he knows who's on the line, which he responds with a different name. Additionally, Jenna's been e-mailing him and hasn't gotten a reply from her.
When she hangs up, Jenna goes into tears and later asks him if he wants her to come home but doesn't and also asks if they're on good terms, but she calls it an "uncomfortable" conversation. She has difficulty sleeping became of him, but she's focused on making it to a final once again.  Later, Jenna tells Vince that she's not sure of Zach has broken up with her, and as being understanding of it he assures her that she didn't do anything wrong and will continue to focus on the task at hand until she returns to the mainland.
MORE OF THE SAME: The week's mission sees the teams work together to complete an unfinished bridge with puzzle piece planks, while wearing a get-along shirt and doing an obstacle course. In a repeat of what will soon be a victory lap for them, Bananas & Sarah hold onto their power team status to take first and advance to Argentina in this last challenge before that trip down to South America, which has all patched up things for them after what we saw on Exes 2. Vince & Jenna feel confident in being safe as they're aligned to the winners, and ultimately they would...it's not the case for last placer's Dario & Nicole. And in the Jungle: once again Devin & Cheyenne draw white skulls, all as earlier D made a case to her that they would nominate themselves to prove themselves against a strong team, as well as finishing second to the power team.
BATTLE OF THE BLOODLINES II: After all the skulls are pulled, the matchup between the team JB/Sarah voted in - Wes & Nany - and Dario & Nicole it sets up a cousin vs. cousin battle in the last Jungle between the ladies. Nicole admits that going against her cousin doesn't feel right for her and makes the situation feel as uncomfortable as any - nobody knows what it feels like to compete against family---the first time that cousins are facing one another in an elimination. "Tunnel Vision" is the elimination game where the teams are racing through a tunnel with a narrow space to see how fast they can go to ring a bell, all the while having a potential for a collision. Nany admits that she doesn't want to rough up Nicole but still has eyes on cashing in the final three.
With their game-changing decision still fresh in their mind and the goal to really prove themselves, Dario & Nicole take the lead in the first of the best-of-3 heats, all as Bananas shows doubts that they could send the other big veteran team home. But they prove the 5-time champion wrong as they win that first heat...and then in the second it's the same thing as they earn a ticket to the semi-final four. The first person to feel the bittersweet feeling of what's just happened is Nicole, who cries upon seeing Dario finish and admits to having a sense of guilt for what's supposed to be a time for celebrating when she's just sent her cousin home ahead of the final. Wes agrees with the cousins' sentiments in saying blood's more important than all else and Nany shouldn't feel down for not getting physical with Nicole in the tunnel.

CAM GETS HUNGOVER: Over in Hawaii, when you put whipping cream into the AYTO house, it's a sure bet the group will do something with it, and not just as food. The house unwinds a bit in playing a few games of "Lick the Whip Cream." In the wake of her TB non-match with Asaf, Tori and Morgan find themselves become attracted lately, and they playfully tease each other with lines of cream, all with hope that, later tonight, they could be the second truth booth match if the teasers and lasers have their way. Their housemates join in on the fun and, not surprisingly, they indulge in the alcohol heavily. It's most especially the case for cowboy Cam, who hooks up with Victoria in the Boom Boom Room later on. He becomes so inebriated that once they wake up, he has no recollection of it...she's hurt that he has no memory of the hookup in Pound Town.
GIO & KAY - AND STEPHEN & JULIA TOO: The group discusses which couple could go to the Truth Booth, and Gio & Kaylen seem a logical pick. Gio has doubts about it, while Stephen supports that move as he's been causing problems in the house and is the hurdle in wanting to connect with Julia, who he's getting close to. Stephen does his part to try and win Julia's heart by putting a surprise mini-date together to connect with her, and it works as he has ambitions on the Suites.
For Gio & Kay, they finish in the top two (Prosper & Nicole were the other) in the "Drunk for Love" challenge to go on the date, all as she shows her frustration for him. Stephen tells Kay and Julia that Gio has his eyes on Julia, and Kay is surprised by the revelation that Gio might be playing her. On the date, his shady actions in the house is reason for her to go off on him and wants to see if he's been frontin' or wants to see someone else. Gio feels this relationship with Kay might not work and she forgives him. When they're picked by the house to go into the Truth Booth, he refuses to believe that they're a match, and the lasers agree with him as the house sits stunned by the No Match after they thought they had intentions on being the next Amber/Ethan, but he's relieved it's all over...except for the girls not wanting to be with this man with a shady persona.
NICOLE GETS REJECTED: For Matchup #5 - and with other strong couples showing doubt that they might not be a match, the group decides to mix it up a bit in switching up three of the girls and see if Alyssa & Sam and Julia & Stephen are matches, while staying true to other ones too. But this simple plan goes haywire once Victoria steps up and chooses Prosper instead of her previous one, and adds that she wants to play by herself rather than by the plan. P.MUNA had a good date with Nicole and though he's finding love with her, it's not the type of love he's looking after, and she bursts into tears over being heartbroken. And Gio continues to show his "freedom" by making bad comments about Camille's body, and she puts him on blast for that attitude. In the end, they're stuck at four beams and while they're exploring new options, they're not at the pace they were in at the beginning that might've closed this thing out early. Now, they're in need of help here at halfway.

 STRATEGY ROOM
AYTO4: AT HALFWAY

Last week, we unlocked the doors to a place on this site we only go inside in the business portions of any Challenge or AYTO season: the Strategy Room, to look at where Rivals III stood with five teams left. We'll head back inside there next week to look at the final three going for the cash, but this week it's Are You The One's turn to be put under the microscope as we are at the halfway point.
It's clear that this season's cast has been playing this game better than Devin and Team Ohana thru five weeks. They've been steady in their match-up's in not losing a beam and began this ride with three of them, one better than the first three seasons had - all with those worries that they could black out & lose cash looming over them. They also notched the show's quickest-ever Truth Booth match in Cameron & Mikala, and though their good start might be dissipating as we now enter the second half, they shouldn't feel all down after falling behind for the first time last week.
● In the first two match-up's, and though they got off to a descent start, the group here knew how to switch it up in only had two re-pairs in eventual match Cameron & Mikala and Gio & Kaylen. It was in week 2 last year that the Season 3 cast had their blackout, and as we told you in the final SR last year they had six re-pairs and they got burned by gaining no lights. In Week 3, we had five re-pairs in the week they gained a 4th beam; four in Week 4; and last week when Victoria put that strategy out of the window, just three even though the planned mix-up didn't involve her. Most are seeing new people while also being wise in keeping on pairing those they feel are those lights.
● For the Truth Booth, we've seen the first three casts make poor choices in the living room, and last year there was that obsession they had with who Kiki's match might be. This season, they've been smart in putting in who the strongest couples were based on events in the house. They untied the John/Julia/Emma triangle in that room, and last week they put the Gio/Kaylen saga to rest. They've been rewarded with settling the score of those couples and the Tori part of Asaf's escapades, and Mikeron too.

As we look over the potential pairs that could be looming over us as the second half begins tonight, it might be only a matter of time before Sam & Alyssa could be put into the Truth Booth if they go on a date. If Asaf does place in the top two or three and one of them is either Camille or Francesca, the house should go for them. There's solid attraction between Morgan & Tori and Stephen & Julia and those two pairs could be put into the booth as we head, to borrow golf terminology, the inward half of this season. Will we have the same end result as the first three seasons? Time will tell, of course.

"ODE TO KAY"
If you've been seeing their tweets the past week, it has been an interesting past couple weeks for Giovanni and Kaylen. A few weeks ago, there was nothing but love for them both in the house and on Twitter after they mentioned about marriage at the 2nd Matchup. But what a difference a few weeks can make, and after what we've seen from him and her making it clear, now there's no contact whatsoever between the two when she blocked him.
In response to that, Giovanni - someone who's an MMA fighter and eager for a shot at The Challenge, and someone who also calls himself "The Wolf", revealed a different side of him last week when released a track on SoundCloud called "Ode to Kay." The link is embedded below.

FAMOUS FRIENDS: HIP-HOP CONNECTIONS
Staying with this musical theme, before the buzz for AYTO 4 began we told you about Prosper hanging out with Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna at a party in L.A. before the baby news was revealed for the both of them. It turns out they aren't the only famous people P.Muna got to hang out with, as last week on Instagram, he posted a Throwback Thursday video with one of hip-hop's best, and someone proud to be from Pittsburgh.
Mac Miller has been doing music since the age of 14, some ten years ago, and has becoming more well known in the hip-hop world for the past five years. After doing work with Maroon 5, Pharrell, Cobra Starship and Schoolboy Q, and releasing some independent work (including a track bearing the name of the GOP Presidential nominee), his breakthrough came in 2013 when he was featured on Ariana Grande's "The Way" and his very own MTV2 reality show, "Mac Miller and the Most Dope Family." He and his independent label REMember Music now has a distribution deal with Warner Bros., and this weekend Mac takes the stage at Montreal's Osheaga Festival with Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lana Del Rey, Radiohead, Disclosure, Cypress Hill, Bastille and many others.
But every journey to the top in the music industry begins, of course, at the bottom. And before he became famous, Prosper got a chance to hang out with Mac while P.Muna was getting his hip-hop career started. Check out the video below and perhaps, P.Muna could become a household name in the future, just as Mac Miller is now.

And over in Challenge world, we're still hard-pressed that a team as talented as Cory & Ashley were eliminated this early from Rivals III, considering how strong they were this season and how they had just a bad night in the jungle against a underdog team. Nonetheless, with all of what we saw from her in being able to erase whatever bad taste she left in everyone's mouths on her original Real World Ex-Plosion season, Ashley is a favorite to grab the award for Rookie of the Season when we get to hand out our postseason awards as summer's end, and she's on her way to becoming a Challenge staple, both competitively and in the house. And outside the cameras, she's been busy with plenty of modeling work, and has just recently moved out to Las Vegas to pursue more of those opportunities in Sin City.
But a year before she made just a short hop to the house in the Polk District to film that game-changing Real World, Ashley had a chance to get to know a true Bay Area hip-hop icon. Vallejo's own E-40 has been at this game for 30 years (if you can believe it), and has released many albums over his career as a regional icon (and hosting a show at Sway's old stomping grounds of pioneering hip-hop radio station KMEL), becoming mainstream when he cameo'ed on Lil' Jon's "Snap Yo Fingers" with Sean Paul. Last year, he collaborated with fellow Bay Area rapper G-Eazy on one of his tracks on his album When It's Dark Out, and he's become a regular presence at Bay Area sports events during this incredible run for the local sports teams.
Back in 2012, E-40 collaborated with Kansas City rapper Tech N9NE on a track called "Zombie" during this time that the AMC show The Walking Dead has made this zombie phenomenon more well known (and during that 2012 phenomenon talk which turned out to be a bunch of baloney), and Ashley was cast in the video which you can see below...her parts begin over a minute in, and for which the photo of her with E-40 and T.9 are above which Ashley shared before Rivals III began.

DUSTIN TAKES THE BIG APPLE
Finally, if there's a Challenge competitor who, along with the man featured on this week's Rivals 'Pulse - Trey, wasn't cast on this season but is eager of another shot, then he's the guy who been stung many times in his four starts. And he's also at the heart of one of the biggest moments in the soon-to-be 25-year history of The Real World.
Five years ago, we first got to know Dustin Zito, who came to RW Back to Las Vegas being that guy from Rayne, Louisiana where everyone knows his name and being that southern gentleman with that boyish charm who's the nicest guy on the outside. But he endured a rough upbringing with a bipolar drug addicted mom and an abusive step-dad so much that he didn't stay at home all the time, but nonetheless worked hard to keep relationships with his family.
That season, the ladies man found love as he clicked with Philly girl Heather late in the first episode and stayed together for most of the season and for sometime afterwards, which also included a stint on VH1's Couples Therapy. Also, he found himself at odds with Mike when he found that he kissed Heather at a Truth or Dare game while he was asleep, but for which all those tensions between them eventually boiled over into a fight on a night out in their trip to Mexico.
But of course, there was the bombshell that rocked the Hard Rock when a game of Never Have I Ever, and a mid-season phone call and email, would ultimately uncover the secret past he had. After graduating high school, he didn't know what he wanted to do next, until he came across a note about a opportunity in LA to be a castmate on an adult website that offered viewers an uncensored look at attractive guys like him living together. He engaged in adult pornography which caused a riff between his cast that for a short time he left the loft before returning. The buzz for this story was so much so that not only was this became one of the show's highest-rated episodes, it also landed him on the cover of US Weekly alongside the Teen Mom girls.
As evidenced by the competitive drive we saw from him on the go-kart, at the rodeo and going motorcycling in Vegas, Dustin was eager to go on The Challlenge. It didn't take long for him to debut on Exes, but an injury to his knee when he slipped and fell on the stairs saw him & Heather go home early, just as we saw with Leroy the past two seasons. Lately, he's had early elimination exits on his last two starts on Free Agents and Exes 2, but when he's at his best he can become a top competitor, as evidenced by a second place showing on Battle of the Seasons II four years ago with fellow Louisianan and Vegas alum Trishelle.
Now, Dustin is tackling a new challenge: the Big Apple. Just recently, he exchanged the Bayou for New York City and now serving as a meat butcher and the first-ever apprentice for a Queens, NY meat shop for which he is a fifth-generation employee. Check out below the SnapChat compilation video of his first day on the job from his newly-relaunched Instagram page (his old one was hacked for some reason, and all of his previous videos were unfortunately deleted). Let's hope we see Dustin on a future Challenge and get that first win for his Back to Vegas cast.

And that note of wanting to get something to eat, we will head on outta here and wrap up this week's Trifecta posts on DCBLOG. As you prepare for what happens tonight in Hawaii and look over who might have the best shot of getting into the three in Argentina, check out these webcasts...
● Last week, the No Quitters Podcast had the first opportunity to talk to one of the key figures of Rivals III last week, Nicole. The hosts had the chance to discuss how Nany picked her to be her Bloodline last season, how she applies her make-up, and of course everything that's taken place this season. Check out that interview and discussion of last week's episode here, and previous podcasts on SoundCloud - hurry up there because links there are only up for a limited time.
● For the first-hand look at this Challenge, check out the Back to Reality series with Sarah & Susie on their YouTube channel. Last week, KellyAnne joined the duo as they chatted about her & Jamie's stint in Mexico, where the game stood and all else that went on there. Also check out their live Q&A's and other videos there, plus The Brain Candy Podcast at TheBrainCandyPodcast.com when they reflect on 80's and 90's pop culture for those of you who love to reminisce.
● On this week's MTV RHAP on Rob Has A Podcast, the duo of Brian Cohen (@BusDriversRoute) & Ali Lasher (@LashsTweets) were reunited after taking their vacations the past couple weeks to chat last week on Rivals III, as they talked Bananas & Sarah grabbing this season by the chin and all else from Episode 12. Check out that, some Are You The One? talk (in alternating weeks) and past shows at robhasawebsite.com and YouTube, and hopefully some interviews coming as well.
● In case you missed it, check out past SpreeCast interviews by Andrew Kirk (@CSUGradAKirk) on his YouTube channel, spanning a slew of the Trifecta's top names too many to mention in this brief paragraph. Also check out Reality Radio Podcast (@RealityRadioPod) and AfterBuzz TV at afterbuzztv.com, and I plan to once again bring Andrew on at the end of this cycle for our traditional Reality Debrief to recap the whole summer in reality TV.
● Finally, someone we forgot to include in the epilogues of our previous WRAP posts: Ace Nichols (@AceNichols33). Check out her hilarious recaps on her YouTube channel and much more as well... and since we forgot to put her here the past few posts, here's the links to her recaps: Episode 11 and Episode 10, and note her Episode 12 recap isn't up just yet but soon will be. She is also planning to do cast interviews and other things in addition to recaps, check out her Twitter for more details.

Now, as we wrap it up here this week, two important reminders:
● First up: this is the last full edition of DC WRAP for at least the next month, as starting this week DCBLOG will be devoting more of our energies to the 2016 Rio Olympics. The size & scope of my greatest sporting passion will take over when Rivals III wraps up next week and will be so for two weeks, save for AYTO obviously. So, we'll scale back on DC WRAP in doing just Strategy Room analysis, fantasy scoring for the last two weeks of Rivals III, ExtraTime and fan reaction, and saving our Things to Know episode write-up's for a mega WRAP after the Games conclude. Our remaining coverage with the 'Pulse diaries and long-form articles will continue, and of course, we'll have daily Olympic posts here on this site all August long, starting this weekend.
● And second: a major change to how I'll live tweet the Trifecta on DCNOW @DC408DxNow. Due to my family changing TV providers this past weekend, starting tonight I'll be live tweeting the rest of AYTO and the last two weeks of Rivals III three hours earlier at 7 PM Pacific, which means I'll be live tweeting the episodes along with those of you on the East Coast. For you westerners, I won't spoil the episodes on my main hub when it airs out East, but is has always been the case I will re-tweet DCNOW's key episode moments in real-time when it airs here out West on @DC408Dxtr, while now being able to do in-show live chats & conducting polls with fellow fans from there too.
Not only will I now make the live tweet experience a bit better in now watching it with a greater audience, I can also get you involved in the conversation a bit more with the rest of you in having the best of both worlds. So, I'm looking forward to now getting into this new fold of both live tweeting the episodes as it airs to most of the country and doing more episode chatter as well.

Of course, if you missed any of the Twitter buzz from this week or want to have our distinctive look at the Trifecta, we'll have you all covered on our usual 'Pulse doubleheader and on DC WRAP. And thanks to the MTV fan featured in my Instagram ad, Christina Brown @Christina4683, for the nice complement she gave me last week on my blog and posts. It's comments like hers that makes me appreciative of the job I have even more.
Of course, any help to spread the word of this site is appreciated as well by sharing these links and telling your fellow MTV fans about DCBLOG and our unique coverage. Your feedback is always welcome, and leave them either on here or to me on Twitter at @DC408Dxtr, and follow me on Instagram, Snapchat and other social networks as well as my YouTube, also DC408DXTR as well.
For now, thank you for reading and see you later tonight on DCNOW. Enjoy your week ahead.
