Who Are These Newbies? - Ex On The Beach Season 5: The Exes

Due to the heavy presence of graphics and video, "Who Are These Newbies?" is best experienced on desktops and fast-performing mobile devices. Some videos embedded contain adult language & situations, parental guidance is suggested.

We are more than halfway through our early summer on Season 5 of MTV's Ex On The Beach U.S., as the American version of the channel's global franchise of love in a totally twisted way continues after it and so many of the reality genre's biggest shows were shuttered during this unusual time in this crazy world of ours. So far, things have been as advertised: those reality stars who we love from both MTV and the wide world of the genre have been given a rude awakening by their exes, and there's plenty more to come from the Canary Islands.

Whether it's the version of the series we see here, the original U.K. show that started it all in 2014, or the twenty or so adaptations filmed in Europe, Brazil or elsewhere in the world, there's one thing that binds every version of EOTB. It's that big moment every week where a few occupants of the villa venture down to the Beach of Doom to receive the answer of "Whose Ex is Next?" And it's when those ex-boyfriends, ex-girlfriends or even new singles invade the beach that causes a huge shock or even just pretending to be shocked when the looks on their faces come into the "ultimate relations*** show."

Ex On The Beach was already of huge interest to this blog and those English-speaking expats who reside here in the U.S. for that several alumni of the original British show were part of the first generation of the global invasion of The Challenge as a prelude to the premiere of our version of this lovefest in 2018. Like it is across the pond, EOTB U.S. has already sparked plenty of buzz just by the sights of familiar faces from all around the MTV Reality spectrum and the whole world of reality TV showing up as either OG's to begin with or as exes who invaded after the beach opened for business. From several of the big names of The Challenge, to those who went for love on Are You The One, and plenty from Big Brother too, this show is the definition of All-Stars in an MTV sense before a Paramount+ show took that name.

The pandemic caused us to wait a couple years for the beach to reopen here, and when this season began in March DCBLOG continued our longstanding tradition of getting to know the Newbies to MTV land of this show when we profiled several of the singles and a few of their notable exes... but we actually jumped the gun a bit on a few of them as they have not as of yet invaded the beach. But now, we turn the focus to some of the well-known exes who have popped up on the beach this spring and who will soon set sail for the Canary Islands where this return engagement is taking place. And after the break, we begin with the latest Big Brother houseguest to make her move to the cable-sphere.

 KAT DUNN
Big Brother 21
   - RICKY'S EX

It's a safe bet that had it not been for The Challenge inviting Big Brother alumni to come and play four years ago or even bringing them to Ex On The Beach after, it's likely we wouldn't have both MTV and CBS under the same corporate umbrella again, perhaps not even Paramount+. But as those passionate fans have just seen two seasons both here and north of the border, were once again provided with a bridge from Season 3 of the Celebrity version and Season 10 in Canada to Season 24 of the summer guilty pleasure by way of what happens when a former houseguest comes onto MTV once again.
As we wrote here before, Season 21 in 2019 was perhaps the most controversial Big Brother season ever, as several issues -- notably racism and lack of BIPOC representation -- cast a stormy cloud over the usually sunny Southern California house. As a result, sweeping changes came about to not only Big Brother but other CBS reality shows, including a pledge for more diverse casting -- which paid instant dividends with last year's historic run by The Cookout alliance. Now, we have the first one from that cast to be cast on an MTV show, following in the footsteps of Paulie, Jozea and Da'Vonne.
Kathryn Dunn comes to us from the hometown of one-half of the last Big Brother/EOTB crossover, Dallas where Elena of Season 3, BB19 and Mark's ex-girlfriend three years ago. Kat was a 29-year-old digital marketing executive when we first saw her that summer of 2019, and who described herself as "reliable, hard-working and fun" when she was cast as one of those dozen-plus houseguests. She has one of the best jobs anywhere because with that marketing gig, she loves being a content creator -- and she also loves being outdoors and hopping to the mall as much. And prior to that gig, Kat had a chance to have one of the greatest gigs, period: she auditioned to join the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders -- and was featured on the CMT series on two occasions, but she didn't make the cut in either case.
But getting another opportunity to be famous awaited her elsewhere: Kat wasn't that much of a Big Brother fan going into the summer share after being brought into this world through the Instagram DMs, but one thing that made her different trying out for that DCC gig was her goal to stand out. And at the campgrounds, her entertaining personality and one-liners caught viewers' attention, as did her love triangle with good friend Holly Allen (who she knew before going into the house) and eventual winner Jackson Michie. She survived getting evicted a few times in the first month & a half in the house especially after her alliance was brought out into the open and also won a Power of Veto challenge and even a trip to Hawaii, but ultimately Kat was sent to the jury house at day 58.
Going into this EOTB Season 5 villa, Kat had that prior fling with Ricky that brought her here in the first place, but if things might've panned out the way they did for her we may have even seen her Big Brother ex Nick Maccarone, who was part of the Gr8tful alliance in that house, and who were together for several months following their season before breaking up in April 2020. But you may not know that she has also had relations in some sorts with another member of this EOTB house in David in taking a pic with him at Disneyland a few years before being reunited in this house, as well as a few other alums of this... Kat even has a new dad as part of her fandom in one Post Malone.

 EMILY SALCH and
 SHERIBEL "SHER" SUAREZ
Love Island USA
   - KYRA'S EX / NOT ARRIVED YET

After much success in Britain and overseas, Love Island made its American debut also in 2019 when CBS aired the first of three seasons of the global sensation. Recently, producers ITV Studios America opted to move the series to NBC's streaming platform Peacock starting with this summer's Season 4, and the locale will also change to inland in Southern California. But two of those who were on Love Island USA are also on this cast as is Kyra, and where both of them are coming to the house as latecomers.
Emily Salch was a 21-year-old bartender and law student from Groton in mid-New York State when she took advantage of summer break to fly to Fiji for Season 1 in 2019. Her bio stated that she is, "...crazy, fun, spontaneous and loves adventure who's worked hard to be financially independent. Even though she can be a bit of a tease, she's had three real relationships and when she falls, she falls hard... and fast," just like some of MTV's reality dating alums before.
Sheribel "Sher" Suarez was also a bartender when she took advantage of whatever downtime she had in Orlando to fly to Season 2 when the pandemic forced the show to take up residency on the Strip at Derynn's old stomping grounds of the Vegas Cromwell hotel. A glimpse at her Instagram shows that she loves being going out, traveling and fashion while also getting to show plenty of skin... but she is also educated and tends to be a private kind of girl.
For Emily, she arrived in the villa on Day 18 and made it all the way to the end of the season as she and Dallas photographer Weston Richey clicked from when they got coupled up and finished in the final four. For Sher, she came to Love Island Vegas by way of the famed midseason twist of the temptation house known as Casa Amor, and she entered the villa on Day 19 after entering the Casa on Day 16, but did not make the final night when she was dumped from the Cromwell on Day 26..
And here's something to consider: over a week ago, MTV announced the nominees for the 2022 MTV Movie & TV Awards, and Sher has been nominated in the unscripted portion of the two-night event even before coming into the villa... that's a sign of how potentially big her arrival will be, whenever it comes.

 JAMAR LEE and
 MINH-LY NGUYEN-CAO
Big Brother Canada 🇨🇦
    DA'VONNE'S EX / HIS EX

From what we got to see in the first half of Season 5, the ones who made the biggest splash on the drama scale were the ones who were totally new to those of us south of the border. And to understand what they have been through, we hope you have either a good internet connection and the ability to try whatever you can to get a VPN for unlimited viewing of TV shows and sports regardless of where you are in the world -- or better yet, if you're near the Canadian border we hope that outdoor antenna is strong enough to receive an affiliate of its third-largest network, Global.
The events of two springs ago changed everything and affected all of us... and that includes the casts of seven Big Brother seasons that were filming in Brazil, Canada, Germany, India, Israel, Italy and Portugal at that time. Not all those seasons concluded for obvious reasons, including what happened up north where the pandemic cut short Season 8 of Big Brother Canada: the season was abandoned a month into production without the top prize being claimed, and the roommates were left saying farewell to each other much earlier... including our second and third Canadian representatives to show, following in the tracks of that maple syrup of Daniel Maguire of Peak of Love and JoJo's Bachelor season.
Jamar Lee came to us from Ajax, Ontario -- an eastern suburb to the west of Toronto, and was a 23-year-old warehouse worker when he entered the BBCAN8 house two years ago. He described himself as "handsome, charismatic, and confident" who doesn't like to be around animals, loves being around positive people, and inconsiderate people are his pet peeve. And going into the house, Jams (as he calls himself) had eyes on being a beast of the competitions for HOH, Veto and the like.
Minh-Ly Nguyen-Cao is a flight attendant who calls Canada's second-largest city and the heart of its French-speaking people call home of Montreal, but who also spent two years in her parents' homeland of Vietnam. Aged 28 when she moved in, she thought of herself as "...a pretty unique person not trying to be anybody else," and where her strategy was to make sure to get used to what the houseguests were like before going for loyal alliances where she can be a good enough competitor.
It was a short season in the BBCAN8 before the pandemic called it off, but still there was plenty of drama for both Jamar and Minh-Ly... but the former made some rather dubious history for becoming the first BBCAN houseguest to be ejected when he breached several rules including his mouth tried to intimate two houseguests... enough for host Arissa Cox and production to give him a game misconduct. And after she came home early, Minh-Ly went in on two houseguests on social media... obviously those two were ready for their American debuts.

 DANI COCO
 ● Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?
    - DAVID'S EX

When we were last at the Beach -- or in this case, the Peak, a lady who was a child star back then was in the group of singles who came to Season 4, and who had returned into the spotlight as a recent single on another love show... and who was a member of the kid's rock band. Allie DiMeco of Nickelodeon's Naked Brothers Band and Season 2 of the current USA Network reboot of Temptation Island was in that spot two years ago, and then there's this one who was looking over the guy from Paradise Hotel...
A glance at what's on both Paramount+ and Pluto TV see plenty for the youngsters in your family to enjoy while they're too young to join you for this love dramedy, and that includes both the old and new versions of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?  FOX aired the show for several seasons in the 2000s with host Jeff Foxworthy, and in 2019 it made its way to Nickelodeon with John Cena taking over duties as quizmaster. And the show's premise: take ordinary adults and match them against young kids to see how much they've remembered or forgotten in all sorts of general knowledge since they were back in elementary school.
One of those who were on the first version of 5th Grader was Danielle Coco, who was on Season 4 of 5th Grader in the summer of 2009, and who wrote on her experiences on her own blog on this Blogger platform. During her season, she appeared on several episodes (for which one of them is seen in full in one of the videos below) which also had celebrity-themed weeks with the Lachey brothers, Apprentice Omarosa, Sanjaya of American Idol, Tom Arnold, Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders and NASCAR drivers -- as well as for when the top prize of $250,000 was won by contestant Elizabeth Miller.

   BONUS
        THE SEASON 4 EXES
 (The Ones Not Surnamed Bird)

Now, a bonus: DCBLOG's vision is making sure that everyone noteworthy who gets introduced on these shows get the proper welcome they deserve... even if a particular season has long ended. In this case, we had planned on doing a WATN? Part 2 for Season 4: Peak of Love... but given the pandemic we didn't get to profile them here -- except for one in Sam Bird when he was the co-subject of our bit spotlighting him and Kailah Casillas of The Challenge when they got engaged two years ago in quarantine.
Now that Season 4 of the show is now on Paramount+ and she is on All-Stars 3, the last section of this Newbies post is devoted to Sam's other fellow Love Islander and the two who stopped & stared at Allie on Temptation Island.

 NIALL ASLAM
● Love Island UK 🇬🇧
    - GEORGIA'S EX

The love story of Peak of Love belonged to that of Love Island UK's Georgia Steel and Callum Izzard, who became the first couple in any version of the show worldwide to propose, though their engagement was short-lived. But before her other ex-boyfriend Sam came to the villa, it was Niall Aslam from Coventry in England's West Midlands who felt her charm before Mr. Casillas.
Niall was a 26-year-old student and construction worker when he entered the Series 4 LI house in Marabella in 2018 from its very first day, and who confesses his love for Harry Potter in displaying a tattoo of one of the characters on his left forearm -- which very much explains his good vibes. In his introductory video below, he feels that his biggest qualities when it comes to being in love is being spontaneous and full of adventure, and who feels that he wants love more than anything else.
When he came to the house however, Niall found that trying to find that one girl on Britain's favorite summer guilty pleasure show was harder than it seems: he chose Kendall in the first coupling but then switched to Georgia on Day 6. But he shockingly walked away from the Island on Day 9 when a health check found that he had been diagnosed with Asperger's, which he shared below.

 CAMERON SIKES
 and CARLOS CHAVEZ
 ● Temptation Island
    - ALLIE'S EXES

The second generation of Temptation Island has been airing Season 4 this spring, as a show that was ahead of its time when it debuted in 2001 was revived on USA Network a few years ago. It's part of a summer of reality love that has not only has EOTB, AYTO, The Bachelorette and The Courtship (began on NBC & ended on USA), but also TBS entering the genre with The Big D starring divorced singles in the company of newlyweds Jojo Fletcher and Jordan Rodgers -- and where Paulie Calafiore has already expressed his anticipation as some of his fellow clients are on the cast.
Season 2 three years ago saw two Texans go for Allie's heart: Cameron Sikes - a 31-year-old equity firm director from Dallas, and Carlos Chavez - a 29-year-old architect from outside Houston. The former came to Hawaii much later having gotten engaged to the wrong lady and looking for a relationship lasting longer than that fling. The ladder arrived in from traveling the world in pursuit of wanting to look for someone in love while also being confident and charismatic. And below, Cameron introducing himself to the singles, followed by Carlos being chosen.

❤️    💔    ❤️    💔

Coming up this Memorial Day weekend: drama will erupt with the most volatile couple in the EOTB villa, plus a shocking return rocks The Challenge All-Stars, and a couple who found love on Big Brother reveal the next phase in their journey. And we'll also head down to the land of the stars for a visit with social media's most famous content house. We hope you enjoy this week's episodes, and that you'll spend part of the long holiday weekend with us ahead...
