DC ExtraTime: Chase in Paradise

If you ever hop by my house and join with my parents on the couch on a Monday or Tuesday night from January to September, it's for the one purpose that gets my parents interested in reality TV the same way I do: watching people fall in love. But unlike this fan who keeps his obsession with Are You The One and Ex On The Beach to a guilty pleasure level without them ever knowing about it, my mom & dad are completely obsessed with Bachelor Nation... and it seems I have also fallen into that spell for a few times this year in eavesdropping on my parents to watch some of the drama.

The engaged BIP 6 couples w/ Chris Harrison (ABC)
Two weeks ago, the 2019 finale of the year in roses & romance went down when Bachelor in Paradise concluded with its 3-hour finale, wrapping up a year that began with Colton Underwood jumping the fence on The Bachelor and continuing with Hannah Brown endure her final two suitors cheating on her on The Bachelorette. But those who give the fandom two nights of magic of begin the work week, they always seem to save the juicy drama for the last act of each annual cycle when the weather is at its hottest and when the focus shifts from the Villa in the Southern California hills and beyond to the Hotel by the sands down south of the border.
In the wake of Jed Wyatt being caught in a back home relationship and Hannah turning to Tyler Cameron, Season 6 of BIP began in early August with those rejected by her, Colton and other leading men & ladies for another shot at love and roses. There were rumors about goings on with some of the suitors when they went to country music's own Coachella, Stagecoach after the main event in Palm Springs before they went to Mexico. There was L.A. recruiter Dean Unglert leaving paradise in mid-August, only to shockingly return two weeks later to ask model Caelynn Miller-Keyes to take the first flight out of town with him... and there was the one & only John Paul Jones and him with Tayshia Adams.
Of course, no battle for love would be complete without any sort of physical activity: bad blood still boiling from batting to score Becca Kaufin saw Jordan Kimball and NY actor Christian Estrada get together next to a pinata and then proceeded to get into fisticuffs in the Mexican night, and both had their hotel keys swiped away from them. Blake Horstmann encountered a tangled web with him, Caelynn, Tayshia and Kentucky dental assistant Kristina Schulman and led him to also quit. And yes, Hannah B. came by to the villa for a brief visit before going onto Dancing with the Stars.

In the end, three couples made it all the way to the engagement phase by the beach: San Diego tech entrepreneur Dylan Barbour & Alabama model Hannah Godwin, and Chicago entrepreneur Chris Bukowski & L.A. medical sales representative Katie Morton joined Chris Harrison to cap off the summer with engagement rings adorning their fingers... so did another couple that helped to highlight this breakthrough year for the LGBT community.
For only the second time on BIP, a non Bachelor/Bachelorette alum made their way to paradise when L.A. video production assistant Kristian Haggerty joined the villa in week 3 in Mexico in having had a relationship with Dallas interior designer Demi Burnett. Their relationship marked the first time a same-sex relationship had been seen on the original U.S. version of The Bachelor franchise during the same summer that Are You The One? embraced the LGBT crowd, and Demi & Kristian joined the other two couples in getting engaged to wrap up 2019 in Bachelor Nation. And on the reunion, Bachelorette 15 suitor Peter Weber was named the next leading Bachelor star for 2020.

For those in MTV Reality land who've become increasingly interested in matters of people falling in love over in Disneyland, they can thank one person for allowing them to join the Bachelor fandom in the past year. Chase McNary appeared on Season 1 of Ex On The Beach last year and who pulled off the trick JoJo Fletcher did to him on his Bachelorette season three years ago by pulling it on Victoria at the last Crush ceremony. Most recently, he had a short stint on The Challenge: War of the Worlds when he & his partner, Ashley, were eliminated in the season's first elimination fresh after off her steal of all the $1 million on Final Reckoning.
At the end of our "Someone You Should Know" introduction to those from Bachelor Nation who've joined Chase for Bachelor watch parties at his Revel Social bar in Denver (including those from this BIP), we brought up the omnipresent possibility that anything can happen in this show, and where anyone who's done a season of The Bachelor or Bachelorette can take those steps down to the Sayulita villa in Vallarta-Nayarit, Mexico. And in Week 5 - midway through this season, it was Chase's turn to walk down and greet Chris Harrison once again as he had another chance at love - this time in familiar quarters and with those in his bar watching back home.
He captioned on Instagram, "BIP anyone? 😈😎...⁣ A lot has happened for me in the last three years including find myself again! It’s been a crazy whirlwind since 2016 and I made some decisions I regret but learned from. Now I’m back and better than ever! ⁣A small piece they understandably took out was me talking to Chris Harrison about everything I’ve done since I saw him last including opening up Revel Social in Denver and launching a nutrition line starting with my Daily Greens! ⁣I am excited for you all to see how these next few weeks unfold! And damn it feels good to be back with ABC!⁣"

Chase w/ Angela Amezcua (ABC)
Before officially moving into the villa and returning to the franchise that made him a name (and after an MTV sojourn that, as he told US Weekly, found him in a different comfort zone than in his first TV experience), Chase joined both this year's cast and other invited guests from seasons past as they dressed up and tended to the latest wedding in Bachelor Nation: Montana fitness coach Krystal Nielson and Orlando salesman Chris Randone held their ceremony in front of the host who acted at the one who proclaimed them wife & husband after they met and got engaged on last year's BIP.
Once he got settled in the villa - and while most everyone else there were making headlines, Chase quietly made a connection to South Carolina model (and ex of NFL'er Clay Harbor) Angela Amezcua, who appeared on the same season of The Bachelor with Nick Viall that gave us Bachelorette 13 star and Ghosted co-host Rachel Lindsay, Chase's fellow EOTB 1 single Jasmine Goode and Paulie Califiore's ex Danielle Maltby. Both Chase and Angela went on one of the many dates around town during the summer, but given how late he came to the game, they didn't have as much time as the rest of the house to establish as deep a connection as everyone else, and they chose to split at summer's end.
On the drama front, Chase got to chime in during the season's next-to-last week when political consultant Luke Stone found that editors were rubbing him the wrong way when his rose offer to L.A. model Brianna Barnes was rejected, and put both the editors and the host on blast... and Chase tweeted to Luke to cut it out. And one of those who competed on his own Bachelorette season, Florida banker Derek Puth, returned on BIP this year after he split from Taylor Nolan - and after having a small beef with him during that season too.
And as one of those handful in the villa from an older Bachelor/Bachelorette season, Chase got to also help out another latecomer to Paradise, Bay Area salesman Matt Donald, with helping to craft the fine art of kissing after he got to hit off with both Briana and NBA dancer Sydney Lotuaco - using, of all things, a pineapple.

We may not be done with talking Bachelor and MTV Reality in the same sentence, and word is that one of those who competed with Chase for roses three years ago may be embracing our screens come wintertime... we'll elaborate on that when we get there then. But first things first: JoJo and the man who beat him, "Bad Chad" Johnson of last season's Ex On The Beach and an ex of a few reality stars, Robby Hayes, to the proposal stage and wedded bliss, Jordan Rodgers, will host the next big reality competition show of interest to Challenge fans. We'll be taking a look at Paramount Network's Battle of the Fittest Couples coming up next week.
