DC ExtraTime: Before They Were MTV Stars - Mac & P.Muna

Today -- September 7, 2018 -- is a sad one for everyone in the music industry, and one that adds to those "days that the music died."  For myself, I'll never forget finding out about Chester Bennington from Linkin Park dying suddenly last year, and for others they will never forget about Avicii, Aretha Franklin and so many others who have left us in the course of the past few years.
Earlier this afternoon in Studio City in the Los Angeles area, local authorities were called to the residence of rapper Mac Miller and pronounced him dead at the scene of a suspected drug overdose at the age of 26, just hours before shooting a music video. This comes after the release of his most recent album earlier this summer, Swimming, and months after his much-publicized breakup with Ariana Grande. Social media has been overcome with emotion and remembrance today, but unneeded negative reaction directed towards the pop star caused her to turn off comments to her Instagram channel just after the news was first reported by TMZ.
Because of today's events and with respect to him and his family, posts covering this week's MTV Reality episodes are withheld until tomorrow. But during Are You The One? Season 4 in summer 2016, DCBLOG offered a brief look at Prosper Mbongue-Muna, aka P.Muna, hanging out with Mac while performing for the very first time as the opening act to the then relatively-unknown Pittsburgh native.

From During AYTO Season 4

Before the buzz for AYTO 4 began we told you about Prosper hanging out with Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna at a party in L.A. before the baby news was revealed for the both of them. It turns out they aren't the only famous people P.Muna got to hang out with, as last week on Instagram, he posted a Throwback Thursday video with one of hip-hop's best, and someone proud to be from Pittsburgh.
Mac Miller has been doing music since the age of 14, some ten years ago, and has becoming more well known in the hip-hop world for the past five years. After doing work with Maroon 5, Pharrell, Cobra Starship and Schoolboy Q, and releasing some independent work (including a track bearing the name of the GOP Presidential nominee), his breakthrough came in 2013 when he was featured on Ariana Grande's "The Way" and his very own MTV2 reality show, "Mac Miller and the Most Dope Family." He and his independent label REMember Music now has a distribution deal with Warner Bros., and this weekend Mac takes the stage at Montreal's Osheaga Festival with Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lana Del Rey, Radiohead, Disclosure, Cypress Hill, Bastille and many others.
But every journey to the top in the music industry begins, of course, at the bottom. And before he became famous, Prosper got a chance to hang out with Mac while P.Muna was getting his hip-hop career started. Check out the video below and perhaps, P.Muna could become a household name in the future, just as Mac Miller is now.

Follow-Up: Sept. 11

On the weekend after Mac's death, P.Muna posted a tribute with both the video above and a picture of him and Mac backstage at that Pittsburgh show on his Instagram page (@IamPMuna). He wrote, "SMH! Still can’t believe the news! A true artist and a huge inspiration of mine coming up! Back in 2010, when I got to opening up for you on my very first show EVER, I was nervous af but I knew music was what I wanted to do. You encouraged me to just ‘keep going!’ And some may not know this but some of my first core fans came from those shows in Pittsburgh with you. I appreciate you letting me open up for you a hand full of times after that, also! ...Your stage presence and charisma were some of the best I’ve seen live; an Amazing performer but an even better person, so humble and caring about your fans and supporters! That’s what I remember about you fam. LOVE YOU FOREVER BRO! Thanks for the great memories and opportunities 🙏🏿 RIP #MACMILLER 🖤."
